surestakes:
I do not believe there is any mature Nigerian that has not had an unpleasant encounter with the Nigerian police, "our friends in uniform". I remember when a friend of mine was jumped by some dudes in Lekki and after he was able to escape, decided to report the case to the police station at Maroko. According to his narrative, when he arrived at the counter he went on to state his case to the lady officer and after a while he noticed that all through the time that he was narrating his story, the police woman was concentrating on a tv show. "Madam, I am talking to you now. Didn't you hear what I just said?" to which she replied, "how much you get sef?". Na so my guy hand fall tongue

Or is the story my wife told me of how the police pulled over a car with her and her cousins and after discovering that all their particulars were complete went further to ask for the receipt of their driver's licence. I could go on and on with various tales of how the police have disappointed and even surprised Nigerians in one way or the other. You can check the thread that is now on fp for more gists @ https://www.nairaland.com/2915957/nigeria-police-money-share-experience.

This thread is not to elaborate on the inefficiencies of the police but rather to take a deeper look at WHY they seem to be having issues discharging their duties as expected of them. I met my wife's cousin who happens to be a policeman some weeks back and after going back and forth on different issues we settled on the his broken arm, now healed, and also about the police force and why he is considering quitting soon. I will try to highlight some points that really touched me:

Nigerian police buy their own uniform and shoes: As Nigerians this might sound normal but the truth is that it is very disheartening to imagine that the average Nigerian police officer purchases his own kits. According to my cousin, he arrested some guys and one of them happened to be a Ghanain. After they got to gisting, the guy asked him, "why do you all have on different shoes?". To which my cousin replied, "we all buy the shoes ourselves". The Ghanain told him that in Ghana the government supplies the police force with kits and you can never find them wearing different shoes.

Like I said, this might sound normal but it is absolutely shameful that the FG of the giant of Africa cannot afford to supply their staff with adequate kits due to the fact that some "ogas at the top" will rather use such funds to invest their pot bellies and bank accounts. Also, the fact that an average Joe/Segun/Nnamdi/Abu can just waltz into the market buy black material and have a tailor sew a "uniform" as well as get a pair of black shoes and "become" a police officer says a lot about the apparent lack of security in the country.

Nigerian police patrol teams maintain their "pick ups": By maintain, I mean they buy the fuel used running the vehicle and are also responsible whenever there's a repair to be made such as a flat tire, broken side mirror from a car chase, engine trouble etc. Do you mean to tell me that there is not enough money to maintain such minute things which should ordinarily be the responsibility of the government? It was then I understood why Nigerian police officers will request for "fuel money" before they respond to a robbery or distress call. It is NOT provided for and even if it is, "some "ogas at the top" will rather use such funds to invest their pot bellies and bank accounts".

Nigerian police officers are not taken care of: He told me a story of how a colleague of his was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery attack. The members of the patrol team had to contribute funds to deposit him in a mortuary and after the family had concluded plans to bury him, there was an outstanding balance of N65,000, they went to meet the DPO of the police station where he was assigned to only for the DPO to say, "it is none of my business, make una carry una dead body go". The said police officer had three surviving kids and a wife and the FG did nothing to compensate them for the loss of their father who died during active duty serving his country. My cousin had an accident on his was back from work and his arm was broken. The FG did nothing to help him out with the bills either. Little wonder the average police officer would rather look the other way or hide in a bush when they hear that armed robbers are close.

Nigerian police officers have monthly "targets" to reach: By monthly targets, I mean they have a specific amount of money they must remit to the DPO or risk being posted to Sambisa police post for their incompetence. So, my cousin was at a "checking" point, funny how that reminds me of a bank, when a colleague of his got a call from the DPO to send him recharge card of N1,000. Unfortunately they had not made any "sales", don't ask me what they sell because me sef dey wonder, so he asked my cousin if he had any money to which my cousin replied in the negative. So he called the DPO and told him he didn't have any money on him. The DPO hung up and called the officer in charge of the patrol team to send that officer back to the station and install someone else in his place.

The level of corruption in the police force beats the imagination: He also went on to tell me an incident of how high ranking police officers will take off their ranks and "demote" themselves in order to attend seminars abroad that are meant for junior staff. The truth is that most of the police officers who we are chanced to meet at bank check points are those at the lower ranks with no access to funding and who are more concerned about meeting their monthly targets, bank marketers can relate, or are busy trying to get by in an occupation that offers little or no reward for their efforts.

So next time you are asked to "settle" for simply being a Nigerian using Nigerian roads, remember that one "oga at the top" is grateful for your deposits grin

omoharry:
I have attended several Igbo parties and that of the Yoruba..To be honest..Abeg i prefer the yoruba party..food, meat and drinks are readily available..food is usually not sufficient in Igbo party like that becos they must have invested that money on other things to show of at the party such as expensive wines and alcohols.so you will drink enough sha.but food is usally not in abudance.as for meat..just know that you are eating your rice with either a small meat or a largh chunk that looks like meat but is filled up with bones....abeg i prefer the yoruba owambe..i always come back happy and satisfied whenever i embark on any owambe than the other one..i am not a yoruba person so i know what i am talking about..
so u carry ur malnutrition face come party just to chop free ewedu and amala go home huh U said in igbo parties food are not sufficient huh Well some igbo folks are not as hungry as you are, no need of preparing heaven and earth while it will remain un-touch, If I'm going to occasion/parties I'm not going there to chop free food and go but to honour the invitation and show my swag, before attending any functioning I will make sure I eat well well outside before entering the venue so people won't see me as hungry man, most igbo folks does that... So most celebrates normally cook foods people can finish, so to avoid excess waste, that's called economical, for abundant of drinks, yeah assorted drinks are not avoidable, the reason u see much drink than food is because its returnable, even if u didn't finish a whole cooling van u can return unused drink and ask for refund, people prefer taking drinks in occasion/parties than food, as for me I can't even remember last i ate food in parties, even if u force me the food I will only manage to take the meat and leave ur food like that, u complain of meat huh So u came to party for free meat huh Average igboman can afford a cow in his/her parties/occasions some slaughtered 2,5,7 base on fatness of ur pocket, for instance If i honoured an invitation I knew u spend money to organise just merriment, u might borrow money for it, what ever I eat in ur party I will make sure I return that money by doubling it either by spraying money during dance or give it to u by envelope....

bashydemy1:
Just tell me his promises and how he fail them.... Let me tell you something, If you are to be around and follow PMB campaign very well you will notice his main campaign slogan which is i will fight corruption to with all my power. PMB came to power to fight corruption as the only problems for all sector in Nigeria is corruption, But you guys did not allow him to fight the corruption by shouting and supporting those corrupt leaders. Let me explain little to you.....

- We say power is dropping everyday do you know why?... There are some cabal that import generator to this country and those cabal are surely behind the downfall of electricity. If some of this cabal were arrested and taken to court, You and your likes will be shouting dictator, Tyranny etc instead of we Nigerians to support him. Mind you if we support him those cabal will know they have no supporters so they will stop it.

- When Dasuki was arrested and taken to court, He formed sickness saying he want to go for treatment abroad. PMB know if this guy should be allow to travel out of the country he won't step his foot on this country anymore the Likes of Diesani, Obanikoro, Lamorde etc... Since they left did they come back? They won't and that was why all of them when they arrest them for prosecution they form sickness and ask to be allowed to travel abroad for sickness cos they know if they should be allow to jet out they won't come back...

- NDA avengers are bombing pipelines and you and your likes are so happy about it and also complaining of power, fuel scarcity etc... Now tell how are we going to get fuel when they are bombing the pipelines that spoil fuel? and instead of us to join hand to fight this people some of you are celebrating them asking Govt to negotiate with them. I have few friends who always say Buhari should beg and negotiate with them and i tell then you don't negotiate with militants of terrorist cos if you do soon another group will emerge with the believe that they will be negotiated with like the previous ones... I ask them about the money given to Tompolo, Boylove, Asari Dokubo etc then where is the money or what did they do with the money to impact the people around them nothing. Asari instead of investing that money in his region to benefit his people, He travel to Benin republic and build schools and houses here and even nationalize himself here can you imagine one time freedom fighter that fight for his people... Tompolo also did not instead he is using the power to collect people's land buying warship etc..Mind you if the Govt fight them then and did not give them amnesty and those money, another set will never emerge.

the list is endless and corruption is the reason for all the problems.

Someone who owe his state workers salaries for months and traveling for lesser hajj, If Govt over there owe their workers how will the country be good for him to visit? and some people who don't even like the Governor before now supporting him all in the name of we hate PMB Govt.

Do you remember when Jerry Rawlings was fighting corruption then in Ghana? He is not only fighting corruption but killing all those corrupt past leaders mind you Ghanaians supported him and today Ghana is doing fine and celebrating Rawling but if them don give our jobless youths 1k naira they will enter street shouting Dictator, Tyranny etc. and mind you they are be given part of the money that was suppose to use in creating job for them that was embezzled in the first.
POO-HARI scammed over 180 million Nigerians with fake change mantra if you want to know some of his campaign promises here are the
1 to equal 1naira to 1 dollar, naira trade 380 to 1$
2 improve our power sector, we generate 1200mgw
3 to improve our security, boko haram now have there own radio, militants are having field day in creek
4 to ban government officials going abroad for medical tour, but he travel all the way to uk for just ordinary ear infection
5 to restricts/ minimize government officials traveling abroad, but he have toured more than 70 countries within 365days
6 he belong to No one but everybody.. Yet he is unable to ask the source of his campaign fund or persecute the like of amaechi that sponsors his campaign from rivers state coffer
7 he is fighting corruption, but his chief of army staff have been indicted in dubai property, while dasuki is in jail and buruntai that also involve is walking freely
8 when fayose indict Aisha buhari in Halliburton Bribery Scam he is the first to react... Yet he claim to be fighting corruption
So many I can't mention here

U said Avengers bombing pipes line are our source of Energy generate through gas huh U said cabals importing generators are the cause of our epileptic power supply huh Are they the minister of darkness fashola or do they have agents in PHCN crippling the power sectors huh Or people don't have right to import generators and engage in legitimate business huh Should we support him as u said by boycotting generator sets while we barely enjoy 2hours steady light in nigeria huh

U said Dasuki was arrested because of his involvement in arm scandal , then why buruntai is not also arrested since he is part of the arm scam huh Amaechi was indicted by EFCC, now he is corrupt free because he is one of POO-hari kitchen cabinet.... Aisha buhari wore a watch of 10million naira during POO-HARI inauguration yet no one question her the source, POO-hari promise to publicly declare his access during his campagn ... Yet he haven't done that... U said avengers bombing pipe lines... Lemme ask you... After biafran/Nigerian civil war did federal Government rehabilitate the war torn region huh Why is POO-HARI trying to create minister of North east for it rehabilitation at the expense of money generate from Niger Delta while the state that get the money is eyes sore, u said Avengers bombing destroying pipe lines... Last I checked they are agitating for something, shooting innocent pro biafran protester is it going to solve the problem of this country ?? if the colony country britain can peaceful decide there faith in ballot box, why the colonize country can do the same for the interest of the masses, Unity of this country can never be achieve by power of force or with gun threat huh If POO-HARI can waste nearly 100million for his overseas medical tour why Gov bello can do the same huh A leader is lead by example, if Aisha can fly to saudi for lesser hajj without POO-hari restricting her from doing so, why Gov bello can't follow suit huh You said when Jerry Rawlings was fighting corruption then in Ghana... Did that make ghana corrupt free huh Why POO-HARI anti-corruption fight is skeptic and selective huh Aisha buhari, OBJ Atiku Danjuma etc are indicted in Halliburton Bribery Scam, yet EFCC dare not touch them because they know what POO-hari knows concerning the bribe scandal, POO-HARI said he is fighting Boko Haram but the first thing he did when he came 2power was 2remove military

been spent and the value of the naira has depreciated since POO-hari came to power and it continues to fall.
buhari say that he will restore our countries fortunes yet the fuel queues are back and the prices of food, transport and basic
commodities are soaring by the day. Buhari say that he want the country 2change,that he believe in fairness &equity, that he is progressive, that he
believe in a generational powershift & that he want the country 2move forward he is trying to destroy Saraki simply bcux he won an election & became Senate President
You said Buhari is fighting corruption yet no-1 has been made 2face the music or brought 2book over the 25 billion naira REMITA & Systemspecs scandal &neither has the matter been clarified or resolved even it has been established dat the whole deal was struck under ur buhari watch, his Fulani libyan kinsman, under the guise of herding cattle, are slaughtering thousands of innocent people all over south &Middle Belt, yet he remain their Grand Patron & he refuse 2 utter a word of condemnation 4der actions
Buhari u says he respect Nigerians yet every time he travel out of the country he spend his time telling foreigners and the foreign media how useless, rotten and corrupt his people are
and how he is the only saint in Nigeria.... I have 2say that I am not surprised because POO-HARI ”change” mantra was just an illusion. What he & APC failed 2disclose 2the Nigerian people during the campaign is dat wht he meant by ”change” was a change frm light 2darkness.
the (NORTHERN) very confused in the sit of power,am happy
to be among 5% proudly vote against this chain mantra...

by the time Buhari finishes with
Nigeria I have little doubt that the entire country will be wailing.
PDP tried 2use every means necessary 2warn us about buhari, but Religious, tribe, propaganda & lies frm APC won't let us see beyond our nose. Well,i dont see APC staying in power beyond 2019. By the way, is it possible 4us 2call 4early Elections ? buhar &his northern governors have pledged loyalty 2the Wahabbi Sunni Terrorist Kingdom & from there they are getting soft loans drawn out 4Dem which we in the south will repay 4Dem through our resources &tax incomes. Buhari is a confused boko

Buhari is very clueless and should take the advice he gave Jonathan and resign. He doesn't really care about human lives, all he cares about is the health of his skinny cows

When buhari was not in power, he complained Dat Jonathan sud resign if he can't combat the insurgents and libyan fulanis to a standstill, now dat he's the president,he sud resign since under his watch boko haram are now coming out frm where Jonathan chased them to the extend of owning a radio station to preach hate

Buhari's main aim as a President is to travel the
world for site seeing (Tourism). He has no idea what
he is doing, he has no idea on how the economy
works.
He is just dumb!

Fake CHANGE, Fake promises, Fake party. APC, party of professional liars and career fraudsters. Fellow Nigerians, sorry you were scammed by APC.

even if Buhari stays in power for 20years we
would keep depreciating... If anybody raises an
alarm the person would be probed nd accused...

Buhari has achieved travelling all over
the world under dis 15months.. I hope to read when he starts inter planet visits
This government is an example of cluelessness and inconclusiveness

it will take 129.5 years for Buhari to turn Nigeria to 'paradise'. He has done nothing apart from hunting his
opposition... time will tell shaa..

There are 48 months in 4 years . if it takes buhari 1yr to "fulfil" one of his campaign promises , it'll
take him 1776 months or 148 years to achieve all his promises . Don't you think Buhari sold all zombies a dummy ? Sai baba
buhari government hasn't done anything tangible since they came to power With the realities on ground , I'm beginning to ask myself what was truly the objective of Buhari to becoming president for a second time in his
retirement age.
