Kogi govt warns doctors against love of money
Mrs. Kehinde Lawal, Kogi’s acting Head of Service (HOS), on Monday advised the state’s striking medical doctors against placing monetary gains over service to humanity.

“Your calling is to save lives; monetary gains should be secondary,” Lawal said at a meeting with the health workers’ union and the management of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, in Lokoja.

She said that government had an excellent package for health workers in the state, but stressed the need to place effective service delivery above other considerations.

Lawal urged the union leaders to always channel their requests through her office for prompt action, “instead of embarking on strike”.

She appealed to the doctors to go back to work, promising that government would clear the backlog of salaries owed them “very soon”.

“Most of the issues you are agitating for have been approved by the governor, but you need to exercise patience and avoid politicizing your demands, ” she said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Saka Haruna, represented by the acting Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Celestine Ejeh, appealed to doctors to call off their strike so as to prevent further loss of lives.

“We are only appealing to you to appreciate the fact that your profession is for service to humanity. We know that the government is owing you, but whatever you are being owed will surely be paid,” Ejeh said.

Responding, Dr. Kolade Gbenga, the representative of the hospital’s chapter of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Professional Unions and Associations, urged the state government to pay health workers already cleared by the Appeal Committee of the verification exercise.

Gbenga noted: “we have been very loyal to this administration and have not embarked on strike unlike the tertiary institutions that have been on strike for six months.”

He said that the health workers’ unions had given government till May 19, to resolve all issues regarding their demands so as to forestall “an impending danger in the health sector”.

Dr. Abdulrahman Jafar, President, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Specialist Hospital chapter, urged the government to pay up salaries and reinstate doctors employed in 2015, that had been disengaged.

Jafar pointed out that their members employed in 2015 went through the right process of employment and were not beneficiaries of ‘political employment’ as claimed by the state government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the acting HOS later went round hospitals and clinics in Lokoja, on an inspection tour of health facilities and to monitor the level of compliance with the duty registers.

She told NAN that the doctors were yet to comply with the directive to resume work and register their names in the duty book so as to avoid the consequences of being absent from duty.

“But, I believe that they will do so from Tuesday. May 9,” she said.

The Bill for an Act to give statutory backing to the already existing and functioning #PeaceCorpsofNigeria scale a major hurdle 03/5/2017 as Senate refuses to stop its legislative business on the Bill despite pressure from some quarters. The Nigerian Senate turned down calls to stop the Bill. The resolution was reached during plenary after lawmakers in the Upper Chamber debated on the matter.
While few lawmakers were against continued legislative business on the Bill and wanted it to be stopped, Majority of the Senators at the plenary including the Senate Leader, Distinguished Senator Ahmed Lawan and the Senate President, His Excellency Senator Bukola Saraki all spoke in favour of the Bill. Senator James Manager of PDP Delta state stood against the Bill even as Senator John Enoh also of PDP strictly opposed him by pointing to the numerous benefits that awaits Nigerian youths after the passage of the Bill, he therefore supported the Bill and wants it passed immediately. "The Bill should be passed, it will serve as a means of employment for Nigerian youths," Senator Garba Binta submitted.
Meanwhile, the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan raised a point of order and stated that the debate stages have passed hence, stopping the Bill is no longer an option. He however noted that the Bill could be delayed while the Senate is briefed properly by its Committee on Judiciary before the adoption of the Conference Committee Report.
On his part, the Senate President Senator Bukola Saraki said the Senate should implore proper guidelines and consider the status of the Bill in the Green chamber. The matter was referred to Judiciary committee and is expected to report back in two weeks for final consideration before transmitting to The President and Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces for his assent.
Contrary to the erroneous reports by a section of the media that the Bill has suffered a set back during the Third Reading, it is important to note here that the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps has already scaled through the 1st, 2nd, public hearing and 3rd reading.
It would be recalled that both the Senate and House of Representatives laid the Report of the Conference Committee in January 2017, where the House adopted the Report, whereas the Senate postponed legislative action on the Report for another legislative day.
We urge all Officers and men of the Peace Corps of Nigeria and the general public to be abreast with the actual position of what transpired today at the Senate. Directing the Conference Committee Report to the Senate Committee on Judiciary is simply meant to unravel some of the few controversies raised during the deliberation including the current status of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.

A Romanian Senate committee has caved under public pressure and cancelled proposed legislation aimed at pardoning officials convicted of corruption.
The amendment was designed to allow convicted government officials to walk free or have their jail sentences significantly reduced.
About 2,000 people demonstrated in Bucharest, the capital, and other cities on Wednesday after the Senate committee passed the amendment to a draft bill that would have cleared the convicted officials.
They chanted "Romania demands no pardon" and "If you don't back down, we're coming for you."

The latest demonstrations came two months after the eastern European country witnessed its biggest protest movement since the 1989 anti-communist revolution, after the newly installed Social Democratic government secretly passed an emergency decree to decriminalise some corruption offences involving officials.
It was later withdrawn after the mass demonstrations.
Cristian Ghinea, an opposition Member of Parliament from Union to Save Romania, told Al Jazeera that his party supports the protesters.
"We are witnessing an attempt to force the contents of the old emergency decree through parliament and I hope that the people will keep up the pressure," he said.
The Romanian government drafted a law to pardon some criminal convictions involving officials citing the need to relieve overcrowded prisons in the country.
That draft bill currently does not include any mention about pardoning corruption convictions - a promise made by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu in the wake of protests that saw some 600,000 people march upon the seat of his government.

The controversial amendment in the Senate legislative affairs committee also included corruption convictions.
Officials jailed for bribery, official misconduct, conflict of interest, or trafficking influence would have had their sentences pardoned entirely, or reduced in half.
Romanians defy freezing cold as protests continue
One of the amendment initiators is former Romanian president Traian Basescu. He was elected twice into office, running each time on an anti-corruption platform.
Basescu said "Romania needs a clean slate," according to a statement made in the Senate committee and quoted by local media.
But critics condemned the move.
