New National PLEDGE: I pledge to God and to Nigeria my country. To be praying, working and vote wisely. To oppose the clueless and shoeless man, who said 16 is greater than 19. To vote out the man that said stealing is not corruption. To oppose the man who has drained all Nigeria's foreign and local reserves and incurred massive debts. And, with my vote, to punish the man who was dancing around while boko harams were killing our Nigerian brothers and sisters and to say NO to the man who cares less about the missing chilbok schools girls. To send him out of Aso Rock this 2015. To restore our Nigeria & Nigerians long lost honour and glory. So help me God.'' |

Barely 24 hours after releasing Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s 1961 West African School Certificate (WASC) results, the Principal of the Government College, Katsina, Mallam Isyaku Bello, has been receiving death threats. Muhammadu Buhari The source of the threats could not be ascertained last night. The principal was summoned by his employers, the Katsina State Ministry of Education, in connection with the release of the results, sources close to Mallam Bello said last night. The embattled principal was said to have explained that he needed to defend the integrity of the college (formerly Provincial Secondary School, Katsina) and not Gen. Buhari. Bello made distress calls to his friends and relatives, The Nation learnt. One source said: “Some forces were unhappy with the issuance of results to Gen. Buhari and they have been threatening the principal. They have been calling him names, abusing him. Some were actually threatening to deal with him. “They told the principal that he ought to have left Buhari to his fate instead of releasing his results. “Faced with pressure, the principal has reached out to friends and relatives on the threats. He explained that he did so to protect the integrity of the college and not anybody’s. “We hope that no harm will come upon the principal, who was just doing his job.” It was unclear as at press time last night whether Bello had reported the threat to the police or not. He did not pick his calls and messages to his telephone were not replied. A highly-placed source in APC Presidential Campaign Council confirmed the threats. He said: “This is an unfortunate development if it is true that the principal is really being harassed for doing an official assignment.” But another source said: the Katsina State Government actually consented to the release of the results by the Ministry of Education in view of the sensitive nature of the issue at hand. A government source said: “Since the WASC results of Buhari had become political, the position of the government was that the principal ought to have cleared the air after all Buhari is a citizen of the state. When contacted, the SA Media to Governor Ibrahim Shema, Mr. Lawal Ahmad Matazu, said: ”Is that so? I’m hearing it for the first time from you. I will find out. Thanks.” |

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) starts its presidential campaign in the north , the party has said that President Goodluck Jonathan ’s administration has been fair to the region . The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh , at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, said the administration has been very fair to the north in terms of projects , political appointments and establishment of Almajiri schools. He said: “The present administration has done a lot more for the three zones in the north than any of the administration before it in the areas of agriculture , education , roads, railways and many more. ” Speaking on the activities of Boko Haram in the northeast, Metuh said the sect would have overrun half of the country if not for the person and character of President Jonathan. “ The problem that we have in the northeast to deal with is insurgency . It is not the making of this government, but this government has tried as much as possible to contain it. “ If not for the character, candour , the personality of the President, these insurgents would have overrun more than half of Nigeria . We would have been under occupation of terrorists if not for the determination, the style and the character and personality of the President,” Metuh stated . Sounding optimistic about the February 14 presidential poll , the party boasted that the PDP would win convincingly in the six geo - political zones in the country. He said: “PDP will win in the North -West , North - Central , North East, South- South, South- East and South-West . APC will not win in any of the zones and our victory will be very convincing. ” On the reduction in the pump price of petroleum products by the Federal Government , the PDP dismissed insinuations that the action was politically motivated. “ It has nothing to do with politics . This is not the first time that we have had fuel price decrease in this country. You will recall that when the late President Umaru Yar A ’dua came into office , he reduced the pump price from N 75 to N 65. And it was on N 65 for a very long time . That was not politics. “ In this particular instance, oil price crashed in the world and the government and the Minister of Petroleum Resources have said that based on the international price of oil, that there should be a reduction in Nigeria. It has nothing to do with election. “ If the of oil price remains as it is , Nigerians will be yearning for more decrease and there cannot be any justification for any increase . And this government cannot increase this fuel price as long as the price remains as it is in the world market . What Nigerians should be asking for now is a complete deregulation of the industry so that it would be reflective of the world price ,” he said. |

Lagos State Governor , Mr . Babatunde Fashola SAN, scored the President Goodluck Jonathan administration very low and urged Nigerians to vote it out in the next general elections . Fashola stated that change of leadership is expedient at the national level because Nigeria is too important both globally and continentally to be left in the hands of those who “play politics with the lives of her citizens. ” Addressing members of the Yoruba Tennis Club and their Island Club counterparts at their respective Club Houses in Onikan , Lagos on Wednesday, Governor Fashola said the national government, formed by the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), has failed to provide its most important responsibility, which according to him , is the security of life and property of citizens and protection of the territorial integrity of the nation . The Governor , who noted that Nigerians handed over a whole country to the ruling party in 2011, expressed regrets that the same party is now returning to Nigerians to ask for another leadership mandate with only part of the country, having lost some parts to insurgents. “ They are returning now to ask for our votes with only a part of the country that we gave them because some parts of the country have been lost to people we didn ’t elect. So, in that most important responsibility, they have dropped the ball .” Governor Fashola, who expressed dismay that the PDP has politicized everything , noted that nothing is too much for the party to sloganize about . He accused the federal government of playing politics with the very sensitive issue of the more than 200 abducted secondary school girls in Chibok in Borno State. The Governor also said that the PDP- controlled Federal Government has also orchestrated about how it made the country “ the biggest economy in Africa ”, wondering why smaller economies could provide electricity for their people while the self acclaimed “biggest economy ” could keep her people in darkness . “ Please ask them why smaller economies could get petrol easily for their people and why we have to queue for hours and days to get petrol in a biggest economy in Africa,” the Governor said. He also wondered why the so-called biggest economy in Africa is trying to buy arms from a smaller economy to secure the country. He pointed out that the nation’s currency , the Naira , is now trading for N 180 per Dollar while the South African Rand is trading at R 11 to one United States Dollar. According to Fashola, what matters is the quality of the life and prosperity of the citizens and not the size or number being bandied by the PDP -led government. Governor Fashola tasked the people to figure out the last time the President went to present the Annual Budget in the National Assembly, an obligation which, according to him , is a constitutional one . The Governor also said that the Federal Government also played politics with the Ebola Virus Disease containment as it almost turned the very grave situation into a political trophy. Conversely , Governor Fashola said, the All Progressives Congress controlled Lagos State Government has done well at many fronts including the Education, Security , Power and the financial sector in spite of the very precarious economic and security situation in the country. |

Category: News Published on Thursday, 25 December 2014 05:00 Written by Isiaka Wakili Hits: 8672 President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday met behind closed doors with a former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Sheriff stepped out of the president’s office at about 1.50pm after the meeting which lasted for several hours and left without talking to State House correspondents. An Australian, Stephen Davis, who was involved in negotiations on behalf of the Nigerian Government with leaders of Boko Haram for the release of over 200 schoolgirls abducted by in April, had in August named Sheriff and a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- General Azubuike Ihejirika, as sponsors of the sect. Although the Department of State Security Service had since cleared Sheriff and Ihejirika, the Borno State Government, through Governor Kassim Shettima’s spokesman, Isa Gusau, had reportedly insisted on Monday that one of the alleged Boko Haram negotiators was an aide to Sheriff whom he asked Shettima to retain. Our correspondent reports that the president also met with Ekiti State Governor, Peter Ayodele Fayose who was accompanied by the chairman of Skye Bank, Tunde Ayeni. Ayeni chaired the recent fundraising dinner where N21.27 billion was raised for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign. |
Kano is a city in Nigeria and the capital of Kano State in Northern Nigeria, in the Sahelian geographic region south of the Sahara. Its metropolitan population makes it the second largest city in Nigeria. The Kano urban area covers 137 km 2 and comprises six local government areas (LGAs) — Kano Municipal, Fagge, Dala, Gwale, Tarauni and Nassarawa — with a population of 2,163,225 at the 2006 Nigerian census. The metropolitan area covers 499 km 2 and comprises eight LGAs — the six mentioned above plus Ungogo and Kumbotso — with a population of 2,828,861 at the 2006 Nigerian census. The principal inhabitants of the city are the Hausa people. As in most parts of northern Nigeria, the Hausa language is widely spoken in Kano. The city is the capital of the Kano Emirate. The current emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was throned on 8 June 2014 after the death of late Alhaji Ado Bayero, the thirtienth emir of kano emirate on Friday, 6 June 2014. The city's Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, the main airport serving northern Nigeria, was named after politician Aminu Kano . History 1850 steel engraving of Kano See also: Kingdom of Kano and Timeline of Kano In the 7th century, Dala Hill, a residual hill in Kano, was the site of a hunting and gathering community that engaged in iron work; it is unknown whether these were Hausa people or speakers of Niger–Congo languages .[2] Kano was originally known as Dala, after the hill, and was referred to as such as late as the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th by Bornoan sources.[3] The Kano Chronicle identifies Barbushe, a priest of a Dala Hill spirit, as the city's first settler. (Elizabeth Isichei notes that the description of Barbushe is similar to those of Sao people. [4] ) While small chiefdoms were previously present in the area, according to the Kano Chronicle, Bagauda , a grandson of the mythical hero Bayajidda, [5] became the first king of Kano in 999, reigning until 1063. [6][7] His grandson Gijimasu (1095–1134), the third king, began building city walls at the foot of Dala Hill. His own son, Tsaraki (1136–1194), the fifth king, completed them during his reign. [7] Gate to the Gidan Rumfa in 2005 In the 12th century Ali Yaji as King of Kano renounced his allegiance to the cult of Tsumburbura, accepted Islam and proclaimed the Sultanate that was to last until its fall in the 19th century. The reign of Yaji ensued an era of expansionism that saw Kano becoming the capital of a pseudo Habe Empire. In 1463 Muhammad Rumfa (reigned 1463- 1499) ascended the throne. During his reign, political pressure from the rising Songhai Empire forced him to take Auwa , the daughter of Askiyah the Great as his wife. She was to later become the first female Madaki of Kano . Rumfa reformed the city, expanded the Sahelian Gidan Rumfa (Emir's Palace), and played a role in the further Islamization of the city, [8] as he urged prominent residents to convert.[9] The Kano Chronicle attributes a total of twelve "innovations" to Rumfa. [10] According to the Kano Chronicle, the thirty- seventh Sarkin Kano ( King of Kano) was Mohammed Sharef (1703–1731). His successor, Kumbari dan Sharefa (1731–1743), engaged in major battles with Sokoto . |
