While I agree with a lot of your predictions, that IT giants losing relevance is far reaching. Nothing is dynamic, more so in the IT world where competition is very fierce. They will buy out the small firms and steal innovative ideas...OR their creators.

BOTS; THE FUTURE IS HERE
When I am prompted by Captcha, (did you even know it was an acronym for ‘Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart?), to type in the words I see while registering on a site or forgetting my password on another, I roll my eyes and wonder why the site would even think it was anything but human that was trying to register. That’s probably the Nigerian in me thinking. While not yet at the Star Wars level, where simple house cleaning tasks are assigned to robots and machines, the world over has been using these artificial intelligences and their potential is limitless. My oldest memory of the knowledge of artificial intelligence is watching a car assemblage on television back when I was a wee lad, and more recently, in medicine (which fascinates me a lot), seeing robots that can determine where what ails you is located on your body. Of course, the usage of AIs is not just limited to medicine and car assemblage. Just a few weeks ago, the internet was on fire with news about Fabio, the supermarket assistant who/that () was sacked, a real-life walking, talking robot (I don’t know what else you people were thinking).
The confusing usage of personal pronoun is pretty much that, CONFUSING. Artificial intelligences these days are programmed with personality to give them presence and make them pass more for living things. From robot puppies, to that Aunt’s voice that greets you when you settle in your car (voice activated digital assistants), to poor sacked Fabio; the codes written for these personalities are based on genetic algorithms with foundations in probability (see why you should have taken that Further Math class?). This is just the simplified version of the true work that goes into creating these personalities.
While program designers are careful to prevent machines from acting life-like because of user concerns about them being ‘too real’, an effect they term ‘uncanny valley’, shoppers where Fabio worked complained that he was ‘inefficient, not being very specific about where what is placed, and also freaked them out. This is a testament to the obvious fantastical expectations that we have – ‘you just can’t please these humans’. In the advent that usage of robotics finally permeates everyday life in Nigeria, I can’t stop imagining how one mama in Ekiti would demand pounded yam, and still demand that like a true ‘yoruba’ robot, it/she/he kneel while presenting the food. Still, bots are here to stay, and we best be prepared to receive them…with wide open arms.

[center]SERVER IS DOWN AGAIN…OR NOT[/center]

IT guys attached to any organization that have on-premises server rooms would probably tell you their worst nightmares become a reality when the servers they maintain shut down. Nobody can access that organization…from within and without. When that happens, everyone feels its effect. As the downtime increases, companies lose billions in revenue for every minute it is off, the world literally stands still and you suddenly realize at that point an urgent need to access/send information desperately like the way you need to breathe. Several things are responsible for this downtime experienced, one of which is “high server overload” (Errrr, OBVIOUSLY). Traffic of information on these servers have increased to the point where the server cannot handle the number of users or requests. You more-often-than-not experience this at months ends when you need to transact on your banks payment outlets or when you desperately need to register for your exams or a job, or just meet general deadlines. Another reason could be almighty NEPA/PHCN/Electricity Distribution/whatever-they-will-soon-call-themselves could take power. You think you have back-up(s) until those too decide to show you who the boss is as well. Your inverters are not powered enough, your generator picks that day to fail woefully…at this point, everybody starts thinking their village people have finally caught up with them when they see the ‘Server is Down’ message.

The technology mantra ‘smaller is better’ becomes redundant with the best solution available – CLOUD STORAGE. In this instance, ‘non-existent is better’. Cloud storage is altogether not a new technological innovation. Cloud storage applications for single users have already being used; Dropbox, OneDrive, AmazonDrive etc. These are mostly used in media sharing and online storage functions where instead of lugging hardware; flash-drives, disks, external HDDs, you have your files saved online by the platform, accessible when you want it. Businesses and organizations are now afforded the opportunity to have all these, and more. No server rooms, no NEPA issues and IT guys can finally not dread months ends and focus on more productive efforts at growing your companies.

Microsoft, with ALL businesses in mind provides Azure, that can be used for much more than file storage and sharing. Secure, cost effective and easy to access, it provides content delivery networks and virtual machines that can be tailored to specific needs that suit your businesses, allowing you absolute control or partial control on your content depending on your demands. Best thing as far I am concerned is, those days your sites experience heavy traffic, Azure becomes flexible to allow for those peaks, allowing smooth running on your site’s activities until traffic normalizes again. How cool is that? If all these banks could just move on, I don’t have to dread months end.
