Computers / "I Am Not Cooking Your Balls" - Laptops Protest by lotusbeta: 2:37pm On Apr 30, 2018
This is the truth about whether resting your laptop on your lap affects your fertility

Unless you’re at work or maybe on a train, the chances are pretty high that you use your computer by resting it on your lap. But have you ever wondered what impact this might be having on your between-me-down-theres? My computer is pretty old and it feels like it gets as hot as the sun… and what about radiation? Is that an issue?

Now, a panel of experts have spoken to The Verge about everything you could ever want to know on the topic.

Essentially, it’s pretty good news. There is no credible evidence that using a laptop on your lap will damage your genitals or have any real effect on your fertility.
Dr John Emory, an endocrinologist at the University of Washington Medical Centre, said: “The good news is that laptop use shouldn’t have any negative impact on fertility.”

Dr Sarah Vaugh, an infertility fellow at Stanford University, agreed that there are not enough studies on the issue to prove that this is a major problem. And the reason that we don’t really need to be worried is that laptops don’t get hot enough to cause any real damage. It’s true that testicles need to remain cool – that’s why they’re on the outside of the body – but laptop heat just isn’t high enough to affect sperm production.

However, the experts agreed that if you are concerned about your fertility you might want to stick to a desk just in case. And they also agreed that radiation from a laptop is so tiny you really don’t need to worry – it’s the same amount of radiation as going on a plane or even walking around outside. The doctors, however, did have some advice about other things you should avoid to make sure your fertility isn’t damaged:

- Prolonged time spent in very hot hot-tubs
- Marijuana
- Opiates
- Alcoholism
And, according to the NHS, if you or your partner has been diagnosed with a low sperm count, there are several options available. You can help maximise your chances of conceiving by:
- Having sex every two or three days
- Moderating your alcohol consumption and stopping smoking
- Staying in good shape, exercising regularly and having a healthy, balanced diet

Science/Technology / Artificial Intelligence And Robots - Nigerian Teenagers Have A Chance by lotusbeta: 11:28am On Apr 27, 2018
I am not an IT person, but the past couple months has exposed me to the underground runnings in the IT world. Occurrences that I normally would have been oblivious of or just willfully ignored. The impact of digitization on our world has gone beyond owning and handling smart appliances. Artificial intelligences are the way now – shop-assistant robots, self-driving cars, dentist robots, surgery robots…things are happening people. We only get to hear of them it in the news when they are either monumental successes or abysmal failures. Still, all that hasn’t put cogs in the wheel of progress. It has in fact, made me realize how very under-represented Nigeria is in the world of IT. It is a continuous source of worry that we will never amount to anything more than end users of whatever technology or innovation is released into the market.
Watching Mrs Remi Willoughby today on a breakfast television show, preach the gospel of robotics gave me hope for our future. Remi who is a director with STEM, was part of a team who organized Nigerian teenagers to attend the First Global Robots Challenge in America last year. She was canvassing support for the 2018 edition to be held in Mexico and raising awareness for the try-outs to be held in Ikoyi tomorrow.
I know certainly, that she has her work cut out for her, given the celebration of mediocrity (I still cannot get over a Minister proudly telling Nigerians we will soon start to make PENCILS in Nigeria), the terrible state of our science and technology institutions and never-ending incidences of favoritism that would not let real talents be discovered. Still, having all those youngsters attend would broaden their horizons and give us hope of a technology creating future.

Please @Mynd44 @Mkmyers45 @UjSizzle can you have this on front page? Some teenager could benefit immensely

Science/Technology / How To Check If Your Facebook Information Was Shared With Cambridge Analytica by lotusbeta: 2:29pm On Apr 10, 2018
Facebook has started notifying up to 87 million people that their information was improperly obtained by Cambridge Analytica, but not everyone has received the notification yet. If you haven’t seen the prompt in your News Feed, there’s a simple way to check your account. Facebook’s help center now has a section that tells you whether you or a friend were affected, available right here.

Affected users will be prompted to change app settings, but it’s worth checking over the list of Facebook apps you have to ensure you remove ones you no longer need. Facebook is not notifying individual users of the identify of the friend who used the “This Is Your Digital Life” app, though.

Facebook is now implementing platform changes to prevent other Facebook apps from improperly obtaining data again in the future. The company is looking for “suspicious activity” from developers to audit them, following similar app restriction changes made back in 2014. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will now testify before Congress this week to answer questions about his company’s use and protection of user data.

Science/Technology / Microsoft For The Blind by lotusbeta: 12:38pm On Apr 09, 2018
In the spirit of oneness and the drive for inclusion, Microsoft has created Be My Eyes

People who are blind can now get IT help from Microsoft experts via a free video-calling app.

Be My Eyes sets up a live video connection between customers and sighted staff at the technology company, who can help with a range of issues, including setting up or updating devices and turning on accessibility features. The app is already helping 65,000 people in 150 countries complete everyday tasks such as cooking, finding lost items, catching a bus or reviewing mail by pairing them with one of nearly a million volunteers. Now, the Microsoft Disability Answer Desk will offer free IT support for people who are blind or have low vision, answering questions that are too technical to be solved by regular volunteers. Microsoft’s team can also communicate via phone, chat, email and American Sign Language.
“Be My Eyes provides a new and innovative way for our customers to get technical support,” said Neil Barnett, Director of the Disability Answer Desk at Microsoft. “With a simple tap on the Specialized Help menu, customers can access the Disability Answer Desk from their phone to get the help they need with Microsoft products and services.” The makers of the app see positive results for everyone involved in a call – the person with blindness completes a task and the volunteer gets satisfaction from helping someone. The most common feedback from app users comes from volunteers hoping to receive more calls. Be My Eyes was created by Hans Jørgen Wiberg, who is blind, after he needed help with tasks but didn’t want to constantly ask friends and family, especially during the night. The app is available 24 hours a day, and can connect people who are blind with volunteers who speak their language in other parts of the world. Be My Eyes volunteers are now able to provide assistance in every time zone and in more than 145 languages.
“The satisfaction rate far exceeded our expectation,” said Alexander Hauerslev Jensen, Community Director at Be My Eyes. “There are hundreds of millions of people who are blind or visually impaired, that’s a huge group, and companies need to offer them a good customer experience. We launched this partnership with Microsoft because many volunteers couldn’t help users with very technical issues, and it can be a frustrating process to try to explain something you don’t know how to explain. Having qualified eyes on the problem can solve it much faster.”

Be My Eyes, which is available on iOS and Android, is now looking to expand the Specialized Help service to telecom and transportation companies, and banks. The Microsoft Disability Answer Desk feature is available in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, the Philippines, the US, Hong Kong and India.

Science/Technology / Road Sensors Detect Potholes Before They Burst Your Tyre by lotusbeta: 5:37pm On Apr 04, 2018
In the wake of the "Beast of the East," already aging roads took a beating, leading to fissures, cracks, and a slew of fresh potholes which frustrated motorists in the UK. The US, too, suffers from aging roads, which can lead to damaged tires, suspension, and more. Local councils often rely on reports from motorists after the event and can find it difficult to keep up repairs on roads packed with traffic on a daily basis. However, a joint project between the University at Buffalo and China's Chang'an University aims to give councils more time to repair roads before motorists take the brunt.

According to computer scientists at Buffalo, the ePave project, outlined in the academic journal Sensors, describes a network of self-powered wireless sensors which can provide city officials updates in real-time on the state of our roads. These sensors would be laid under road surfaces and would harness piezoelectricity to monitor road conditions, breaks, and the formation of potholes. Piezoelectricity is the type of wireless charge used by electric cigarette lighters and acoustic guitar pickups. This kind of pulse and energy is created by the "mechanical stress that vehicles put on roads," according to the team, and therefore could be used to power sensors without the need for cabling. As energy can be harvested in real-time, this eradicates the need for batteries to be installed and for roads to be torn up.
Each ePave sensor is roughly the size of a key fob. Experiments with prototype sensors indicate they could be placed up to 152 meters apart at between two and three centimeters below road surfaces. At this level, the sensors can detect moisture and pressure, which can indicate that problems are beginning to form.

Information gathered can be sent every 10 minutes to stations up to 304 meters away. "We want to detect road faults before they happen, and ultimately help motorists avoid traffic accidents due to damaged roads," says Wenyao Xu, PhD and assistant professor of computer science and engineering at UB. The project is in the early stages and more has to be done before any solution is available commercially. The team plans to continue experimenting with the lifecycle of the piezoelectric module -- which is hoped to last up to 20 years -- and the scientists also need to develop efficient ways to embed the sensors into our aging road systems without causing too much disruption.

With many councils struggling to maintain our road systems, such investment might seem unlikely. However, local authorities that have begun to travel down the path of the smart city might be more amenable.

Science/Technology / When The Anti-biotics Do Not 'anti' The Biotics by lotusbeta: 5:09pm On Apr 04, 2018
I think Nigerians would do well to take note. Seeing as we patronize a lot of mobile drug dispensers

Antibiotic-resistant ‘nightmare’ bacteria spreads to 27 states

Doctors and scientists have been warning us for years that the overuse of antibiotics could result in a “super bug.” An antibiotic-resistant bacteria, they said, could utterly devastate entire populations, and potentially lead to utter catastrophe. Now, with over 200 confirmed cases of various different “nightmare” bacteria already in dozens of US states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are on high alert.

These germs, which don’t respond to many common antibiotics, have not reached anything near epidemic levels, but the fact that they already exist is enough for scientists to sound the alarm. “The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance threatens to outpace the development of new antimicrobials, and slowing the spread of these organisms has become a priority,” the CDC’s report states.
“I was surprised by the numbers we found,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, told CNN. “Two million Americans get infections from antibiotic resistance, and 23,000 die from those infections each year.”

This latest report, which the CDC published on its website, reveals that various different strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria were discovered in 27 states, and were not all related to the same ailments. Some were discovered in samples of pneumonia infections, while others were found to infect the bloodstream and even the urinary tract.

Going forward, the CDC is betting on what it calls a “containment strategy” to combat the spread of these nightmare bugs. However, for a containment system to work as intended it’s crucial that these specific types of bacteria are detected early before they can spread. If one type of infectious bacteria gains a foothold, it could cause massive problems.

In the report, the CDC outlines its strategy:

"In 2017, CDC outlined a new effort to react rapidly to novel multidrug-resistant organisms (cool; this approach includes encouraging health care facilities and public health authorities to respond to single isolates of an emerging antibiotic-resistant pathogen. The strategy rests on these five pillars: 1) rapid detection of targeted pathogens and their resistance mechanisms, 2) on-site infection control assessments by trained experts to identify gaps in infection prevention, 3) screening of exposed contacts to identify asymptomatic colonization, 4) coordination of the response among facilities, and 5) continuing these interventions until transmission is controlled. Detection and control efforts can extend from the index facility to other facilities that share patients."

Actually putting a system like this in place is a slow process, and requires the cooperation of countless doctors and specialists. Let’s just hope they can get it going before any nightmare bacteria gain the upper hand.
