A heavy three-hour downpour has wreaked havoc on the Delta State capital, Asaba, and surrounding communities. The torrential rain left numerous residents homeless and destroyed homes estimated at several millions of naira. Also destroyed were part of the Government House fence, computers, and vehicles. The rain started around 5 pm on Saturday and lasted over three hours. Eyewitnesses said the state secretariat, Delta Broadcasting Service, (DBS), State Security Service Road, Okpanam-Ibusa Road, Junior Staff Quarters Road, State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB), and former legislative quarters, among others, were submerged by the flood. At the Delta Broadcasting Service, off Okpanam Road, staff who reported for morning duty were seen roaming about outside the main compound as the station remained off air, while office chairs, tables, computers, cameras, tapes, vital documents, records, writing materials and other personal belongings were seen floating on the water. At the secretariat housing the offices of Establishment, Post Primary Education Board, (PPEB), Fire Service, part of the Ministry of Information, Delta State Rural Development Agency among others, civil servants were seen crowded at the main gate of the secretariat as vital officials files, documents, official records, books, fridges, shelves, photocopiers, computers were also floating on the deep water. A civil servant accused Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of paying lip service to the incessant flooding in the state capital. The Okowa administration recently claimed that the state government had released N100 million to the contractor handling a construction of diversion drainages to accommodate the flooding on Okpanam Road and other locations during heavy downpours, but several residents said no work has been done. Reacting to the flooding and destruction of official properties at the state secretariat, some of the civil servants urged Governor Okowa to stop ignoring the flood issue. "We have lost our official documents, files, our belongings, to the flood. You can see how everything is floating on the water," said one civil servant. He added, "The situation is irresponsible. Is Okowa saying allocation is not coming to the state.? What stopped the governor from tackling this problem since two years?" Another irate civil servant said he feared that the flood could have destroyed thousands of workers and pensioners' files at the state secretariat. "Asaba flood is a man-made disaster, not the natural flooding people talk about," said another civil servant. According to him, "For the next one week, no official work can be done here in the state secretariat and DBS. Some of our colleagues who risked it to their offices for a rescue mission could not do anything because they were almost swallowed up by the water. Instead of addressing the flooding in Asaba, Okowa is busy awarding contracts to himself, his brothers, family members, and cronies." In another development, the Delta State Council of the Radio Television Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), has challenged Governor Okowa to give priority to the state-owned media organizations, Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) in Asaba and Warri rather than any other electronic private media in and outside the state. The union made the demand last Thursday at the end of its executive meeting presided over by the state chairman, Onoriode Mukoro. The union urged Mr. Okowa to speed up the connection of the 33kva power line for DBS Asaba and Ubulu-uku sub station. They also emphasized the need for interconnectivity between DBS Asaba and Warri in order for the station to bring to Deltans events across the state on a single telecast. The union also stated it was important that the government provide outside broadcast vans (OB Vans) in order to achieve live broadcasts. They added, "The need for operational vehicles cannot be over emphasized as this will enhance the station's ability to comb the nook and crannies of the state in order to improve content, as well as aesthetics of our television screen, state of the art television cameras, editing facilities and well-designed backdrops for television productions, should be considered." https://www.digestng.com/2017/07/23/flood-overwhelms-asaba-destroys-official-documents-files-homes/

Photos: Ayo Fayose's Son Graduates From Covenant University, Says; "Children Of Public Office Holders Should Attend Schools In Nigeria" Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose's fourth son, Rogba, graduated from Covenant University in Ogun state yesterday July 21st. Fayose in company of his wife, Feyisetan and other sons, attended the convocation ceremony which held in the school's premises. While speaking to newsmen, Fayose called on Nigerians to invest in the country's education sector expressing belief that a Nigerian university can one day emerge best in the world with proper funding. According to him, Children of public office holders should attend schools in Nigeria. "I won't condemn people for sending their wards to study abroad but I have always believed the best could be gotten here in Nigeria. During my first tenure as governor, I withdrew my sons from a private school(Olashore International School) to SPEB public primary school in Ekiti, an initiative of my then administration. My Sons graduated from Nigerian Universities, I want others to emulate me, we have the best here, we can choose to invest here. We talk and do. Whatever we say is what we practice. Apart from the fact that none of children attended schools abroad, I have never travelled out of the country for Medicare. Even though views of people like us might not be popular among the powers that be because we say the truth and act the truth, we won’t stop telling them what they do not like to hear and one of such is that the only way to improve the standard of education in the country is for children of holders of public office to experience what children of ordinary Nigerians are experiencing in schools in the country"he said. Speaking further, Fayose said "As a parent, we are fulfilled. Graduating from here is a value added to his life, as the fourth son of the family and the third to graduate from this University, it gladdens our hearts and we are happy to identify with him, we thank God for his life and we thank the University for helping us to train him. When you have certificate issued to you, it comes with character, I urge modern day Nigerian graduates to make a sense out of the certificate and the character and take advantage of the opportunities they were exposed to so as to have a better tomorrow for themselves and the future generations. I wish these graduands the best and pray that the parents reap the fruits of their labour over them". https://www.digestng.com/2017/07/22/photos-ayo-fayoses-son-graduates-from-covenant-university-says-children-of-public-office-holders-should-attend-schools-in-nigeria/

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday told government troops not to allow themselves to be captured alive by enemies of the state and instead kill themselves if they are cornered in a battle. "Do not surrender alive," he told soldiers after turning over 3,000 units of 45-calibre pistols for the military. "I will give you a pistol with three magazines, but remember one is for you and two is for the enemies." Duterte said soldiers, especially those deployed in the southern Philippines, should not give Islamist militants the opportunity to execute and behead them, which the terrorists film and later on release on the internet. "It is very horrifying and traumatic for (family members) to see that," he said. "I don't mind losing the guns to the enemies, but don't give the guns to them alive. Never allow yourself to be degraded." Nearly 100 soldiers have been killed in almost two months of fighting with hundreds of Islamic State-allied militants in Marawi City, 800 kilometres south of Manila. Troops have killed more than 400 militants, who have executed 45 civilians since the fighting started on May 23. Some of the executions have been filmed by the militants and released on the internet, the military said https://www.digestng.com/2017/07/19/do-not-surrender-to-your-enemies-kill-yourself-before-they-capture-you-philippines-president-rodrigo-duterte-tells-govt-troops/

A statement released by the Federal government reads; “These payments, which totaled N243, 795,465,195, were made to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory upon the approval of the president on May 4, 2017. “This is in partial settlement of long-standing claims by state governments relating to over-deductions from their Federation Account Allocation Committee for external debt service arising between 1995 and 2002. “The funds were released to state governments as part of the wider efforts to stimulate the economy and were specifically designed to support states in meeting salary and other obligations, thereby alleviating the challenges faced by workers. “The releases were conditional upon a minimum of 75 per cent being applied to the payment of workers’ salaries and pensions for states that owe salaries and pension. “The Federal Ministry of Finance is reviewing the impact of these releases on the level of arrears owed by state governments. “A detailed report is being compiled for presentation to the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as part of the process for approval for the release of any subsequent tranches.’’ See How Much Each State Got Below: Abia – N5.72 billion Adamawa – N6.11 billion Akwa Ibom- N10 billion Anambra – N6.12 billion Bauchi – N6.88 billion Bayelsa – N10 billion Benue – N6.85 billion Borno – N7.34 billion Cross River – N6.08 billion Delta – N10 billion Ebonyi – N4.51 billion Edo – N6.09 billion Ekiti – N4.77 billion Enugu – N5.36 billion Gombe – N4.47 billion Imo – N7 billion Jigawa – N7.11 billion Kaduna – N7.72 billion Kano – N10 billion Katsina – N8.2 billion Kebbi – N5.98 billion Kogi – N6.03 billion Kwara – N5.12 billion Lagos – N8.37 billion Nasarawa – N4.55 billion Niger – N7.2 billion Ogun – N5.7 billion Ondo – N7 billion Osun – N6.3 billion Oyo – N7.9 billion Plateau- N5.64 billion Rivers – N10 billion Sokoto – N6.44 billion Taraba – N5.61 billion Yobe – N5.41 billion Zamfara – N5.44 billion Federal Capital Territory- N684 million. https://www.digestng.com/2017/07/19/paris-club-refund-see-how-much-each-state-got/

Mercedes-Benz, reeling from a massive recall over concerns about diesel emissions, is stretching its refined image with its first ever pickup truck, betting that upscale car buyers are ready for an open-bed hauler with leather seats, oak trim and Autobahn handling. The X-class, priced from 15,000,000 naira in Germany, will hit dealerships in the brand’s home country starting in November and will then be rolled out to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in 2018 and Latin America the following year. The Mercedes model will be available initially with two diesel options as well as a gasoline engine. The top-of-the-line V6 diesel will be available from mid-2018. Mercedes is targeting the mid-sized pickup at wealthy clients who like quad biking and sailing. Taking on a new segment far removed from opulent models like the S-class sedan shows how far the world’s biggest maker of luxury vehicles is prepared to go to capture new sales. For now, it plans to stay clear of the U.S.’s competitive truck market, dominated by utilitarian vehicles like the Ford F-150. The X-class gives Mercedes an offering that rivals BMW and Audi will unlikely match any time soon. "With the X-class, we will open this segment to new customer groups,” CEO Dieter Zetsche said in a statement. “Our pickup convinces as a workhorse just as much as a family and lifestyle vehicle.’’ Car characteristics Daimler anticipates that demand for mid-sized trucks will grow by 43 percent over the next decade to around 3.2 million units. While that might be attractive, moving into new segments can be a risk, especially for a brand that trades on its image for elegance and performance. Luxury pickups also have little track record of success, as General Motors Co. and Ford found when sales for the Cadillac Escalade EXT and Lincoln Blackwood failed to take off. The vehicle, which cost “a high three-digit million euro sum” to develop, will be produced as part of Daimler’s cooperation with the Renault-Nissan alliance. Vehicles for Europe will be assembled at a Nissan plant in Barcelona, while models for Latin America will be built at a Renault factory in Cordoba, Argentina. “The X-class is the first genuine pickup with convincing passenger-car characteristics,” said Volker Mornhinweg, head of the Mercedes vans unit, which developed the vehicle. “As a result, the X-class pushes the boundaries of the classic pickup.” https://www.digestng.com/2017/07/19/mercedes-targets-quad-bike-loving-wealthy-with-luxury-pickup/

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike says PDP is the only party that is a household name in Nigeria. Wike said this at the Inter-denominational Special Thanksgiving Service organized to thank God for the Supreme Court ruling that affirmed Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic chairman of PDP. The thanksgiving service held at the Rivers State Ecumenical Centre in Port Harcourt yesterday July 16th. Wike said that the ruling APC after winning elections in 2015 have resorted to excuses and blame game instead of fulfilling the promises they made to Nigerians during the election campaigns. “Two years after the mandate what is the situation? Excuses and blames without delivery. Look at how individuals took it upon themselves to destroy the party that gave them life. PDP is the only party that is a household name in Nigeria. There is no unit in the country without a member of the PDP” he said He alleged that Sheriff was an agent of APC sent to cause havoc in PDP. https://www.digestng.com/2017/07/18/pdp-is-the-only-party-that-is-a-household-name-in-nigeria-nyesom-wike/ “While we are reconciling, we must be vigilant. Nobody will take me unawares. Satan will never sleep. Satan will always find ways to cause havoc. Sheriff is an agent of the APC. Woe betide any person who is a mole of the deadly party.” The governor said that going forward Rivers State must get return on her contributions to the PDP. “As we help you, you help us. If you don’t help us, we won’t help you. All of us must rise from our unit, ward and local government area to mobilise people”. He canvassed total loyalty to the PDP, saying that the party is supreme. According to him, in reconstituting the State Executive Council, only very loyal and committed former commissioners will be re-appointed. “God saved PDP because of Rivers State. We don’t have plan B. Every other state had plan B. Our enemies will be put to shame from time to time. Rivers State is the strongest PDP State” he said
