No fewer than 40 students were shot dead
yesterday by men believed to be Boko Haram
terrorists in an attack on a school hostel in
Yobe State.
The students of College of Agriculture, Gujba,
40 kilometres from Damaturu the state capital,
were asleep when the agents of death stole
into their hostel. It was one of the most
horrific attacks ever carried out on defenceless
people by the insurgents.
The gunmen also set the school buildings on
fire as they retreated after the attack.
The Nation gathered that the attackers
numbering about 30 drove into the school
around 1:30am and moved straight to the
students hostel where they assembled them in
various groups and opened fire on them.
“They arrived at the school around 1:00am.
We thought they were security personnel on
surveillance, but they later invaded Admin
Hostel and beat up the victims outside the
hostel and opened fire on them,” Ibrahim, a
survivor, said.
An employee of the College, Musa Amadu, said
the gunmen stormed the college in Toyota
Hilux trucks, Volkswagen Golf cars and
motorcycles, killing the students, after closing
all the gates to prevent them from escaping.
He said about 18 students were abducted by
the attackers. Others hid in the ceilings,
Amadu said. He said the gunmen ordered the
students not to flee before shooting them in
the three-hour attack.
Governor Ibrahim Gaidam wept on seeing the
bodies of the slain students with gun shot
wounds on various parts of their bodies at
mortuary. There was also a picture of the
victims packed in a truck, their bodies
drenched in blood.
Damaturu Specialist Hospital Medical Director
Dr Garba Fika confirmed that 40 students were
killed.
He told the governor who visited the hospital
that five students, including three with
fractures, one with bullet wound and another
with abdominal injury, were at the hospital.
The governor, who was in tears, urged security
operatives to intensify aerial surveillance of
the area.
Gaidam added: “On our way from Maiduguri to
Damaturu this afternoon (Sunday), we saw a
trailer and bus that were burnt, with the
occupants slaughtered and their corpses
littering the highway.
“Government should rise up to its
responsibilities to save the lives and
properties of its citizens.”
The governor said that anyone travelling on
the Damaturu to Maiduguri highway was
taking a huge risk.
Deputy Governor Abubakar Aliyu, the Provost
of the College, Mulima Mato and other
dignitaries also shed tears at the mortuary
when they saw the bodies of the students.
More than a thousand students fled the
institution, military spokesman Capt. Lazarus
Eli said.
Yesterday’s attack was not the fist on a
school in Yobe. Schools in the state re-
opened only 13 days ago after 10 weeks of
forced closure following attacks.
Those attacks resulted in the death of 29
pupils and three teachers.
In June, seven pupils and two teachers were
killed at the Government Secondary School,
Damaturu.
In July, 22 pupils and two teachers were killed
at the Government Secondary School,
Mamudo.
Parents were seen in groups discussing the
fate of their children, in view of the serial
attacks on schools by suspected Boko Haram
militants who came disguised as soldiers, set
up checkpoints and fired on motorists and
bystanders.
A parent who requested anonymity told the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he and
others were scared of sending their children
and wards to school.
“We are shocked, saddened and scared of
sending our wards back to school with these
ugly incidents of attack on schools in
Damaturu, Mamudo and now, Gujba,” he said
A statement by the state government said 40
students were killed while four injured had
been transferred to Sani Abatcha Specialist
Hospital in Damaturu.
Gaidam said although there was increase in
troops movement and the deployment of more
military hardware in the Northeast, the people
of the state were yet to see the kind of action
that could effectively nip criminal and terrorist
activities in the bud.
He urged the people to pray for divine
intervention.
The statement by the Special Adviser on Press
Affairs and Information to the Governor,
Abdullahi Bego, said: “His Excellency Governor
Ibrahim Gaidam strongly condemns
Saturday’s attack on students of the State
College of Agriculture, Gujba. The governor
describes the attack as devastating, heinous
and barbaric.
“Forty students were killed by criminals and
terrorists while four others were injured during
the attack.
“On a visit Sunday to the injured who were
hospitalized at the Sani Abatcha Specialist
Hospital Damaturu, Governor Gaidam
commiserated with families of the victims and
prayed Almighty Allah (SWT) to make the
injured recover quickly.
“The governor also said the Yobe State
Government will foot the bill for medical
treatment for the injured.
“His Excellency Governor Gaidam calls on the
military and other law enforcement operatives
in the State to intensify surveillance and
patrols to deal more effectively with the
prevailing security challenges.
“The governor noted that although there is
increase in troop movement and the
deployment of more military hardware in the
northeast, people were yet to see the kind of
action on the ground that effectively nips
criminal and terrorist activities in the bud.
“The governor pledged to continue to support
security agencies in every way possible to
restore peace and security.
“He also called for regular aerial
reconnaissance and more intrusive patrols
along the Maiduguri-Damaturu-Potiskum
highway where many heinous attacks have
taken place in the recent past.
“His Excellency Governor Gaidam also called
on all residents of the state to continue to
pray for divine intervention for the resolution
of the security challenges that the state faces,
remain calm, go about their normal
businesses and cooperate and assist the
security agents working to protect life and
property.
“The governor urged residents to continue to
use the telephone numbers provided by the
military to report any suspicious persons or
movement in their neighbourhoods.”
No fewer than 143 people have been killed this
month in neighboring Borno State, which
along with Yobe and Adamawa states are
under a state of emergency declared by
President Goodluck Jonathan last May.

Members of the New Peoples Democratic
Party have said former President Olusegun
Obasanjo is not a member of the faction.
It said the former Chairman of the Board of
Trustees of the PDP was not directly or by
proxy, linked to the faction of the ruling party.
A statement issued by the National Publicity
Secretary of the faction, Chief Chukwuemeka
Eze in Abuja on Sunday, also cautioned
against arresting or ridiculing the former
President over his alleged closeness to the
faction.
Eze said former President Obasanjo played an
important role in making Dr. Goodluck
Jonathan the President of Nigeria and
deserved respect.
He said, “We do not know why General
Olusegun Obasanjo (retd.) is being linked
with the New PDP .
“Let us state unequivocally that this foremost
nationalist has not in any way – either
directly or by proxy – had anything to do with
our existence and operations.
“Ridiculing and plotting the arrest of such a
distinguished personality that fought to keep
this nation as one entity and contributed
immensely in making the PDP the most
vibrant, virile, versatile and biggest political
party in Africa as a nobody is not the best
strategy to use to fight the cause of President
Jonathan, who knows what Chief Obasanjo
did to make him President in the first place.”
Eze also raised the alarm over an alleged
plan to begin a crackdown on members of the
faction, including the seven governors.
Governors in the New PDP are Rotimi
Amaechi (Rivers); Rabiu Kwankwanso
(Kano); Murtala Nyaho (Adamawa); Sule
Lamido (Jigawa); Abdulfatah Ahmed
(Kwara); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); and Aliyu
Wamakko (Sokoto).
He said members of the faction had received
intelligence reports that the Presidency was
putting finishing touches to what it called
“Operation Total Crackdown on G7 and their
allies in the New PDP.”
He said when the report got to them that
members of the faction were going to be
arrested and jailed without charges, they
discarded it, describing it as a joke.
However, he said an interview granted an
online medium by Alhaji Mujahid Asari-
Dokubo, in which he allegedly said there were
pressures on President Goodluck Jonathan to
arrest both Obasanjo and a former Vice-
President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, showed that
such plan was in the offing.
Eze said, “The sin of these two distinguished
Nigerian statesmen, according to those
plotting their ‘demystification,’ is their
alleged support for the New PDP, including
the G7 Governors.”
He said in view of the seriousness of the plot,
the National Chairman of the New PDP , Alhaji
Abubakar Baraje had summoned an
emergency meeting of the National Working
Committee of the faction on how best to
respond to the situation.
Though he said that they concluded at the
meeting not to be intimidated for any reason,
even if it means death, as the members
believed that they were fighting a just cause,
Eze nevertheless said Baraje directed the
members to prepare their Will.
In his reaction, the National Publicity
Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Ibrahim Jalo, said
all the aggrieved governors would soon
return.
Jalo said, “Our governors, though aggrieved,
would soon return to us. No one would leave
a winning team, or abandon a bright future
for an uncertain one.”

BENIN— Kidnappers of an Edo State High
Court Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa,
abducted on his way to resume at the Ekpoma
Division of the high court last week, are yet to
make contact with the family.
It was gathered that no ransom demand had
been made, nor communications established
by the kidnappers.
Meanwhile, Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria,
JUSON, has resolved to stage a protest march
to Edo State Governor’s office, Department of
State Services, DSS, and the Commissioner of
Police, today to register their displeasure over
the kidnap of Justice Okungbowa.
JUSON at its meeting, weekend in Benin,
directed its members to stay at home for
seven days effective from Wednesday, if the
judge was not released.
Edo State branch Treasurer of JUSON, Alex
Osigbemhe, told Vanguard that their decision
to boycott all judicial activities in the state
pending the unconditional release of Justice
Okungbowa was total, insisting that the
kidnap of lawyers and judges in the state was
becoming an embarrassment.
He said: “We will decide on the next line of
action to take if at the end of the seven days,
the judge was not released.”
Judges’ resolution
Meanwhile, judges in the state may have
resolved to shun the courts in protest over the
abduction of Justice Okungbowa.
The action of the judges is coming on the
heels of the resolution by the Benin branch of
Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to boycott all
courts in the state until Justice Okungbowa
was released unhurt and unconditionally.
Vanguard learnt that among the courts
allegedly shunned by NBA last week were
Court of Appeal, Benin Division, Federal High
Court, all state high court, magistrate courts,
customary courts, and district customary
courts.

NBA, in a statement by its chairman, Oriane
Akere, called on the state government and
security agencies to live up to their
responsibilities and take proactive measures
to stop the state from degenerating “into the
Hobbesian state of nature, where life was
short, nasty and brutish.”
It was learnt that security operatives of DSS
and the Police in Edo and Delta states were
working together to ensure the safe release of
Justices Okungbowa.

Lagos — Governor Babatunde Fashola of
Lagos State, yesterday, unveiled the tallest
hotel in West Africa, the Intercontinental
Lagos built at a cost of N30 billion.
Fashola unveiled the hotel in a ceremony also
attended by the Governor of Central Bank of
Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi;
Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Akiolu 1; ex-
governor of CBN, Joseph Sanusi, and other
dignitaries.
The hotel located at Kofo Abayomi Street,
Victoria Island, Lagos, is a 23-storey building
with 358 rooms, 37 suites and a presidential
suite.
The Intercontinental Lagos, a subsidiary of the
Intercontinental Hotel Group, IHG, is owned by
the Milan Group.
Fashola said the new hotel showed that the
economy of the country was witnessing growth
daily but without corresponding employment.
According to him: “The new sector is the
tourism sector. This is the only virgin sector in
the country, and it will help address the
challenges of unemployment in the country.”
The governor said the new hotel had helped to
create new 650 direct jobs in the state.
He noted that with the construction of more
hotels and hospitality outfits, more direct jobs
would be created as well as numerous indirect
jobs.
Chairman, Milan Group, Ramesh Valechha
said the hotel will change the landscape of
Lagos and boost the hospitality industry in
the state.
He noted that the Memorandum of
Understanding, MoU, for the project was
signed on March 31, 2004 while it took two
years to complete the design work before the
conceptual- isation of the project began.
He stated that the Lagos State Government,
Skye Bank and Wema Bank were in supportive
of the project.
Valechha disclosed the building of the hotel
cost over N30 billion while 650 jobs were
created for Nigerians.

The Christian Association of Nigeria on
Tuesday asked the Federal Government to
enact a legislation that would ensure that
kidnappers and terrorists were treated as
armed robbers.
The association said this while reacting to
the abduction of the Archbishop of the Niger-
Delta Province of the Church of Nigeria
(Anglican Communion), Most Reverend
Ignatius Kattey; and his wife, Beatrice.
The President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor,
in a statement issued by his Special
Assistant (Media and Public Affairs), Kenny
Ashaka, appealed to the kidnappers of the
Archbishop to “release him unconditionally
and unharmed as a means of atoning for the
sacriledge they have committed.”
Oritsejafor said, “While the activities of the
kidnappers are awash with prominent
Nigerians abducted, the manner of abduction,
the location where those taken forcefully were
freed from and sometimes the cost of
freedom, government seems incapable of
dealing with the situation.
“Given the ferocious and violent manner these
kidnappings are carried out we are worried
that if the crime of kidnapping is not matched
with equally harsh or severe punishments,
Nigeria may be in for an even worse situation
than she is with the terrorist activities.
“In circumstances where kidnappers shoot
and kill people before forcefully abducting the
victims, we call on the Federal Government to
treat Kidnappers like armed robbers and
terrorists by invoking laws that would stop
crimes and criminality.”
Oritsejafor also bade farewell to the Prelate of
the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence,
Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde who had just retired
from active pastoral service.

OWERRI — The Federal Prisons, Owerri,
originally built to accommodate only 548
inmates is now housing a total of 1,827
persons.
Of this number, only 164 of the inmates are
serving varying jail terms, while a staggering
1,663 persons are awaiting trial.
Imo State Comptroller of Prisons, Mr. Ifeanyi I.
Amaliri, disclosed this while receiving the
State Chief Judge, Justice Benjamin A.
Njemanze, who was at the prison
establishment on jail delivery exercise.
Justice Njemanze discharged 10 persons said
to be awaiting trial for more than seven years,
including three persons whose illnesses were
likely to terminate in death.
The Chief Judge, who appeared stunned as
Mr. Christopher Chidi, a Lagos-based clearing
agent and car dealer, narrated how the police
arrested him on fictitious charges, charged
him to Umuokanne Magistrate’s Court which
later sentenced him to prison, later discharged
him.
Presenting the case of Osolase Ehis, who was
remanded since February 3, 2009, without
trial, the Prison medical personnel, Dr.
Innocent Chukwuezi, informed the chief judge
that the accused person was now suffering
paralysis on both legs.
“The accused person has severe paralysis on
both legs. He also exhibits some element of
psychiatric problem.
“Since the medical facilities in this prison
cannot properly take care of his ailment, he
should be allowed to go on medical grounds,”
Dr. Chukwuezi pleaded with the chief judge.
Similarly, Iheanyi Anuforo, who was only 19
years when he was incarcerated December 20,
2010, now suffers from what the medical
doctor termed immuno-suppression.
He was also discharged by the chief judge.
While Joanah Adaoha Igbosonu was set free
on health ground, Chukwudi Amaechi, Chinedu
Ekechukwu and Mmaduabuchi Ezeh were said
to have committed minor offences but had
stayed in custody longer than they would have
spent if they were actually convicted.

expressed concern that no member of the
human right commission was present during

Monday morning that there will be no
democracy in Nigeria without the
Peoples Democratic Party.
Mr. Jonathan, who spoke at the
party's post convention dinner held
at the Presidential villa, which ended
in the early hours of Monday, said
that peace would soon return to the
troubled party.
While acknowledging the grievances
of the seven governors, who said they
have formed "New PDP", the
President added that there must be
disagreement among family
members.
The rebel governors includes Aliyu
Wamakko(Sokoto), Sule Lamido
(Jigawa), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers),
Aliyu Babangida(Niger), Abdulfatai
Ahmed(Kwara ) Murtala Nyako

All of them were absent at the
dinner.
But Jonathan said he was sure that
the efforts of the elders of the party
would restore peace.
He said, "Even those who said they
were leaving did not say they were
leaving the party, but merely said
they were going to form New PDP.
They still added the PDP to to

Nigeria and that they cannot achieve

Chairman of PDP Governors Forum
and Governor Godswill Akpabio, in
his speech said, “Out of 23 PDP
governors all the 17 are here at the
dinner, there was no faction in our
party, what we are experiencing is a
storms inside a teacup. We will soon
overcome it and reconcile ourselves.
Akpabio also stated that anybody
who wants leave to any party is free
to make his or her choice.
"Any of our members who wishes to
leave can do it now. But, they should
remember that, anybody who wants
authority must respect others in
authority," he stated.
Speaking further, Akpabio boasted:
"Any gang up, any scheme up, any
writes up or noise, misleading our
people cannot win, cannot change
our stand or loyalty to Mr. President
and the party leadership. It will not
do anything or affect our respect to
Mr. President.”

Kenya Vice President William Ruto's crimes
against humanity trial begins at the
International Criminal Court on Tuesday, the
most senior official ever judged by the under-
fire tribunal.
Ruto, 46, flew in to The Hague from Nairobi on
Monday to face charges of masterminding
deadly post-election violence in the east
African nation five years ago.
The trial, beginning at 0730 GMT, comes just
days after lawmakers in Kenya became the first
in the world to approves moves to withdraw
recognition of the court's jurisdiction.
Any move by Kenya to leave the ICC's Rome
Statute will have no effect on the current trials,
but observers fear it may spark an exodus of
court member states in Africa, where all the
ICC's current cases are based.
Ruto and his co-accused, radio boss Joshua
arap Sang, 38, each face three counts of
murder, deportation and persecution after a
wave of violence swept Kenya in 2007-08,
leaving at least 1,100 dead and more than
600,000 homeless. Both will plead not guilty.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, a one-time
political foe of Ruto's turned ally, goes on trial
at the ICC on November 12. He also says he is
innocent.
Dozens of Kenyan MPs have promised to show
their support for the accused by flying to the
Netherlands for the start of the trial.
Violence in 2007-2008 laid bare simmering
ethnic tensions. The violence was mainly
directed at members of Kenya's largest Kikuyu
tribe, who were perceived as supporters of then
president Mwai Kibaki's Party of National Unity
(PNU).
Pre-trial judges said evidence suggested that
Ruto held a number of meetings to plan the
ethnic killings as far back as December 2006.
Initial attacks quickly led to reprisals, with
homes torched and more people hacked to
death, bringing some parts of the country to
the brink of civil war.
The ICC, the world's only independent,
permanent tribunal for war crimes, genocide
and crimes against humanity, took charge of
the cases after Nairobi failed to set up a
tribunal of its own in line with agreements
brokered by former UN secretary general Kofi
Annan.
Despite vowing cooperation with the court,
Kenyatta said over the weekend that he would
not allow both leaders to be out of the country
at the same time.
Presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji said that he
also would prefer for the two cases to be
staggered, possibly with each case heard for
four weeks at a time.
The cases have been mired in accusations of
witness intimidation, allegations dismissed by
the defence.
But several witnesses already having pulled
out of the trial and ICC chief prosecutor Fatou
Bensouda and rights groups have frequently
raised the issue.
Amnesty International said the start of the trial
was "an important opportunity to end impunity
for the serious crimes committed in
2007/2008
"The government's recent efforts to politicise
the ICC trials are deplorable, and must not be
allowed to affect the commencement and future
proceedings of this landmark trial," Amnesty's
Netsanet Belay said in a statement.
But there is concern in Kenya that the trials
could reopen old wounds and undo
reconciliation efforts by communities who once
