The British High Commission in Nigeria on
Wednesday announced a new visa regime
application whereby applicants for United
Kingdom visa would be paying online in U.S.
dollars.
In a statement signed by its Press and Public
Affairs Officer, Mr. Rob Fitzpatrick, the
commission said that the new system would
begin on December 16.
“From December 16 2013 all applications for
a UK visa must be completed using our
online application system and paid for online
in US dollars. Payment can be made using
Verve debit card, Visa or MasterCard credit or
debit cards or the e-wallet PAGA.
“The move to online application and
payments will deliver a streamlined
application process and is consistent with a
wider global trend to online transactions and
payments.
“It meets the requirements of the UK
Government’s Digital by Default initiative and
will help cut costs in the management of the
visas operation, which in turn helps to keep
visa fees down,” it added

The funeral ceremony for the late Prof. Festus
Iyayi began on Wednesday in Benin, Edo
State capital, with a solidarity march by
members of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities and civil society groups.
Members of ASUU in their hundreds from
other universities including the University of
Ilorin, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Delta
State University, Abraka joined their
colleagues in the University of Benin to pay
their last respect to the late Iyayi.
Other groups represented included the Nigeria
Labour Congress, Conference of Non-
Governmental Organisations, Joint Action
Front and Parents Consultative Association of
Nigerian Universities.
The march, which began at about 10am,
included five kilometres walk to the residence
of the late professor of Business
Administration, on Bello Street, off Benin
Lagos Expressway.
Addressing the participants in the march at
the residence of late Iyayi, the Chairman of
UNIBEN chapter of ASUU, Dr. Tony Monye-
Emina, described the deceased as one of the
country’s number one fallen heroes and a
hero of ASUU struggles.
Monye-Emina said the march was the
beginning of activities to mark the exit of the
late professor.
Recalling the journey that claimed the life of
Iyayi, he said it began on a pleasant note
that morning, “with Iyayi reliving the last
meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan
and how he urged them to show true
commitment to the struggle.”
Also addressing the crowd, human rights
lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), urged ASUU
not to relent in the struggle but to continue
where Iyayi stopped.
He vowed to ensure that recklessness on the
roads by government officials was brought to
an end.
He said that ASUU and the Iyayi family
members had mandated him to challenge the
“murder” of Iyayi in court.
Also addressing the crowd of sympathisers,
Chairman of ASUU, University of Ilorin
chapter, Dr. Taiwo Oloruntoba-Oju, said the
late Iyayi had “cloned many other Iyayis while
alive, to carry on the fight.”
He said the only way to ensure that what
Iyayi fought for was not allowed to die with
him was by sustaining the struggle.
He said, “If the Federal Government truly
respects Iyayi, it should go ahead to
implement the agreement they signed with
Iyayi and other ASUU officials, rather than
shift the date for resumption by the lecturers,
failure to which they would lose their jobs.”
Other speakers eulogised Iyayi, saying he had
actually been immortalised.
Iyayi’s eldest son, Ehidiamen, who received
the mourners on behalf of the family, thanked
them for the support they had given the
family since their father’s demise.
He was later presented with a signed copy of
the condolence register opened by the union.
Meanwhile, ASUU chapter in Tai Solarin
University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, held a
candle-light procession in honour of the
deceased on Wednesday morning.
Participants at the procession sang solidarity
songs during a 25-minute walk within the
university campus as a mark of respect for
the deceased.
Chairman of the TASUED branch of ASUU, Dr.
Adebayo Akinsanya, described the late
scholar’s death as painful.
“His death has really left a vacuum in the
academic circle and we are going to miss him
a lot. We organised this procession in honour
of our late past president and to bid him
good night with the hope of meeting him in
heaven,” Adesanya said.
He noted that Iyayi lost his life in the course
of the struggle for the lecturers’ wellbeing,
adding that he would always be remembered
for his selfless service to mankind.
“Iyayi believed in the freedom of the people
and we at TASUED will continue to fight until
we are sure that his efforts were not in vain,”
he added.
On the ongoing ASUU strike, Akinsanya said
that the union would call off the strike once it
was sure that the Federal Government had
met the lecturers’ demands.
“We are fighting this cause for posterity and
for the future of education in this country; we
are confident that we will win,” he said.

Residents lose million of naira property
From OKEY SAMPSON, Aba
Following days of torrential rain, coupled with
bad roads and lack of drains, flood has
ravaged some areas in the city of Aba
resulting, in the destruction of goods and
property worth several millions of naira. The
most affected areas are Ngwa Road axis
including East Street, Ehi/Cameroon Roads by
Eziukwu, Azuka Extension in Ogbor Hill, Ukwu
Mango and some parts of Ariaria market,
among others.
The flood, which depth was put at over four
feets in some areas, caused serious damage to
household property and goods parked in
warehouses and shops. A driver with one of
the orthodox churches in the city said the
flood destroyed virtually all the household
property he had laboured over the years to
acquire.
“I went to work on Monday and by the time it
started raining by midday; I knew I was in for
trouble because of poor network of roads in
the area where I am living coupled with lack of
drainage system. “My fears became real as I
approached my house, I saw my pots of soup
floating on the flood water and when I
managed to get inside my room, my bed and
other household property were floating as
well.”
Second hand cloth wholesale dealers along
Nkodi Road/ East Street were also counting
their losses after the rains as their shops were
flooded and goods worth millions of naira
damaged. Similar fate befell drug traders at
Ariaria market who, like their counterparts at
Nkodi Road/East Street, used machines to
pump out water from their shops to salvage
some of their goods.

Labour activist and General Secretary,
National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE,
Joe Ajaero has given the Federal Government
one week to resolve its differences with the
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or
cripple the country with the mother-of-all-
strikes.
Ajaero who was speaking during the opening
of a training workshop organized for labour
leaders in Enugu, threatened to ally with other
unions across the country to join ASUU on a
solidarity stike if the impasse persists.
He said: “If ASUU issue is not addressed, we
will shut this country alongside other unions.
We will ally with other unions and make sure
that nothing works in this country.”
Ajaero said government was being insensitive
to the plight of Nigerian students because the
children of the rich are studying outside the
country.
“This is not a strike based on demand, it’s
based on agreement. As government, you
must honour your agreement. Here, there’s no
social security, the price of food is high, the
same goes for electricity tariff. We are going
to join our children to stay at home and let
them run the system,” he threatened.
The labour leader said that the time has come
to bar public office holders form sending their
children to schools abroad or travel overseas
for free treatment, noting that not until then,
will government take the various institutions
serious and put things the way they should
be.
Ajaero however, reassured electricity workers
that the union would ensure that everybody
receive their entitlements before the final
handover to private investors and urged them
to make good and judicious use of the money
and not go on spending spree.
“They are playing politics with us but all we
have told them is to give us our entitlements
and we will handover tomorrow. They said
before the end of this week; if we don’t see
evidence of payment, we won’t handover.”
According to him, the workshop is to prepare
them for better management of the funds
through skill acquisitions and entrepreneurial
skills and urged them to take the workshop
serious.

The Director General of the Bureau of Public
Enterprises (BPE), Mr. Benjamin Dikki, has
assured stakeholders that payment of
outstanding payment of labour liabilities to
Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)
workers is to be concluded next week.
Dikki reaffirmed that the Federal Government
is committed to concluding the payment of all
verified entitlements of the staff of PHCN
successor companies before the end of second
week of October and immediately, commence
the process of physical handover of the assets
to the new owners.
The BPE boss stated this in Abeokuta, Ogun
State, on the sidelines of the burial ceremony
in honour of the mother of the Chairman,
Senate Committee on Privatisation and
Commercialisation, Senator Olugbenga
Obadara.
He disclosed that the funds required for the
exercise have been remitted to the Office of
the Accountant General of the Federation
(OAGF) who has transferred same to
commercial banks for onward payment to the
workers.
The director general recalled that the Federal
Government had earmarked the entire $2.6
billion proceeds expected from the sale of
PHCN successor companies for the settlement
of the benefits of the staff.
He, however, regretted that the delay in
concluding payments to some staff was as a
result of differences in names, multiple
Retirement Savings Accounts (RSA) and wrong
account numbers submitted by some staff.
He promised that as auditors verify and
reconcile the differences, payments would be
concluded as expeditiously as possible.
The National Union of Electricity Employees
(NUEE) had in a recent statement protested
the planned handover, saying several labour
issues had not been settled. It, therefore, said
if the government continued with its action,
the PHCN workers would not be able to
guarantee electricity supply after Wednesday,
October 2, 2013.
The union, in a statement by its General
Secretary, Mr. Joe Ajaero, said: “Because of
the Independence Day ceremonies, we will be
patient to allow for full celebrations. However,
we hereby urge Nigerians to bear with us if
after October 2, 2013 the government goes
ahead with her illicit handover to the investors
in a forceful takeover. The implication will be
that the workers would have technically been
asked to withdraw their services and we may
not be able to guarantee smooth operations.
Consequently, if after October 2, 2013, the
office of the vice president fails to correct this
misleading information, we shall not
guarantee supply of electricity in the country.
This is not a threat as our earlier ultimatum
has expired.”
The union listed issues that were not resolved
to include the non-conclusion of payment of
terminal benefits to the workers; non-payment
of retirement savings to the workers’ Pension
Fund Administrators (PFAs) and non-
remittance of two per cent of the union
deductions as agreed.
