Activist lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the Federal Government to sue its South African counterpart over the renewed xenophobic attack on Nigerians. According to Daily Post, Falana urged the Federal Government to demand compensation for Nigerian victims of the xenophobic attack in South Africa. He gave the call in a statement titled: “Beyond the condemnation of xenophobic attacks by the federal government,” which he personally signed and issued on Wednesday. The activist lawyer stated that like its counterpart in Nigeria, the political class in South Africa had failed to address the challenge of poverty and inequality confronting the majority of the black people. According to Falana: “Even though apartheid was defeated by the people of South Africa over two decades ago, the unjust socio-economic system erected by capitalism had not been dismantled. The crisis has been compounded by wanton corruption and the neo-liberal policies of the government. “Hence, the South African masses have been denied the dividends of democracy by the African National Congress-led government. In particular, the masses have no access to health, housing, education and employment. Out of sheer frustration, millions of young people in South Africa have decided to subject African immigrants to xenophobic attacks. “In addition to the payment of adequate compensation to all the victims of the mindless attacks the Government must teach South Africans about the immense contributions of the people of Cuba and a number of African countries to the struggle waged against apartheid and colonialism in the Southern African region. “However, since the Cyril Ramaphosa administration is not likely to accede to the demand for compensation the federal government should brief a team of lawyers to seek legal redress for the victims of the attacks in South African courts. “The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria should be directed to coordinate the legal defence. In view of the regular harassment of Nigerians in South Africa and a few other African countries, the federal government should make the Declaration to enable individual victims of human rights abuse to access the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights sitting in Arusha, Tanzania.” Read more: https://www.mactvnaija.com/2019/09/xenophobia-falana-what-buhari-should-do.html

On Monday, Ndigbo in Enugu raised the alarm over alleged endless attack on them by hoodlums, leading to the abduction of at least 50 persons within 8 months. According to Daily Post, it was disclosed by a businessman and prominent member of the Igbo community in Gboko, Mr. Okafor Nnolim. He told journalists in Enugu that Igbo communities in various parts of Benue state, especially Gboko, have become ‘endangered species’ in the State. The alarm is sequel to alleged targeted kidnappings and murder of Igbos in the state by native gangs, suspected herdsmen and bandits. Speaking with journalists in Enugu, Nnolim stated that there is no week an Igbo person was not kidnapped or murdered in Benue State even as they were subjected to paying millions of naira in ransoms. “We can no longer do our businesses freely for fear of being kidnapped or murdered. Since January this year, we have had over 50 Igbos kidnapped and some murdered in cold blood by bandits and suspected herdsmen,” he said. Nnolim’s fears and concerns was collaborated by another Igbo resident in the state, one Chief Ndukaku, a fabrics merchant, who described the Igbo as endangered species in the north-central state of Benue. Chief Ndukaku, a trader at the Gboko Central Market lamented the deteriorating state of insecurity in the State noting that all efforts to get the security agencies and state government to address the matter have fallen on deaf ears. “Igbos in Benue state are being systematically decimated and our businesses are gradually being ruined by these kidnappers and bandits,” he cried out. Similarly, Mr. Ikem Ani also lamented that Igbos in Benue have been subjected to untold hardship and their lives are no longer guaranteed. According to him, “there is virtually no week that an Igbo person is not kidnapped. We have tried to engage the State Police Command to no avail. We are therefore crying out for the world to know the fate of Ndigbo in Benue State. “We are now putting Ohanaeze Ndigbo on notice that we have become endangered in Benue State because what is happening to Igbos in Benue State is worse than what is happening to Ndigbo in the far north,” he said. It was also reported that the spate of kidnaps and killings of persons of Igbo extraction in Benue state in recent time had prompted calls by a group, Igbo Youths Movement (IYM), for serious intervention by the government and law enforcement agencies. In a recent press statement, the group expressed dismay with the way reports concerning security of Ndigbo in Benue State had been handled with “levity and non-challance” by the security agencies in the state, warning that Igbos in Benue state may be forced into aggressive defence of their lives and property. Two Chinese identified as Lin Piehao, 22, and Li Ruoneng, 27, have been arrested for carrying out illegal activities in a factory. The factory is said to be operational on e-waste which is assembled and exported to China and Vietnam. A police source, who confirmed the arrest to NAN on Tuesday in Lagos, said operatives from Area “F” Command, Ikeja, uncovered the factory through intelligence reports. It was gathered that the visas of the two suspects had since expired but they had continued to stay in the country unperturbed. The source revealed that operatives stormed the No. 19 Sule Abuka Street, Opebi, Ikeja factory, which had no signboard and arrested the suspects. According to the source, several cartons of e-waste already packaged and billed to be exported to China and Vietnam through air cargo were recovered. “We got a tip-off about their activities and we stormed there and arrested them. We also discovered that the two brains behind the company are staying in Nigeria illegally. “They came to Lagos in May and they were issued one month visa permit, but they exceeded their stay and started working in Nigeria illegally,” the police source said. The police source quoted one of the suspects, Lin as confessing to the crime, saying: “we buy phone panels (Android and Nokia panels). We buy them from phone repairers and scrap sellers. “We remove the panel I.C. with machine and then ship them to China and Vietnam. “We have some Nigerian casual workers in our factory but we give them the rules and urge them to be discrete before they join us. “We actually came into Nigeria with one month visa to explore the country and study the business we can do, but our boss in China urged us to open the factory and we have been enjoying Nigeria. “We did not want to go back despite the expiration of our visa. I don’t have work permit. I know it is a crime to work without work permit, but the e-waste business is very lucrative. “We do a lot to ensure that the smoke from the e-waste doesn’t affect the environment where we operate.” Meanwhile, police authorities have vowed to arraign the suspects in court to serve as deterrent to other foreigners who carry out illegalities unhindered.
