Politics / Gov. Rochas Okorocha Urges Other Govs, Legislators To Join APC by made001(m): 5:08pm On Dec 28, 2013
According to National Mirror, the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, when visited at the government house in Owerri by political stakeholders in the South-East geo-political zone has urged other state governors yet to defect to All Progressives Congress (APC) to do so without delay.

He gave assurance that their political interest is guaranteed in the party than the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He also urged members of the National Assembly who want to join the APC to do so without hesitation, that the court action being taken by the PDP against some of the governors who defected to APC was only aimed at discouraging others itching to join the party.

“The law is very clear on elected officers who want to defect to another political party,” he said.

He commended the former chairman of PDP in Kaduna state, Alhaji Audi Yaro Makama, former commissioners in the state and a host of others who recently defected to APC, describing the APC as a moving train every patriotic Nigerian must be desirous to catch up with.

Politics / Oyo Governor Proposes 188.9b Naira Budget For 2014 by made001(m): 4:40pm On Dec 21, 2013
The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has presented a 188.9 billion Naira (about 1.2 billion dollars) budget proposal for the 2014 fiscal year before the state House of Assembly, expressing his commitment to the eradication of poverty through people-oriented programmes.

While making the presentation of the budget tagged “Budget of Consolidation,” the governor said that the proposal was guided by his administration’s desire to consolidate on its achievements, in order to restore, transform and reposition the state to its former pacesetter status very soon.

In the 2014 proposed budget, the sum of 96.041 billion Naira, representing 50.9 per cent, is allocated to recurrent expenditure, while capital expenditure would gulp 92.8 billion Naira, representing 49.1 per cent of the budget.

Allocations to different sectors are; 36.2 billion Naira to the economy, representing 39.01 per cent; Social Services 25.7 billion Naira, 27.67 per cent; Urban Regional Development 17.7 billion Naira, representing, 19.12 per cent and General Administration 13.2 billion Naira.

“The budget would focus on sectors like education, health, water and infrastructure. The aggregate percentage of 82.25 per cent of the total budget allocated to the economic, physical infrastructure and social services sector underscore my administration’s determination to pursue a people-centred, empowerment-focused agenda,” Governor Ajimobi said.

In her response, the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Monsurat Sunmonu, lauded Gov Ajimobi for the attainment of a peaceful society where lasting infrastructure is being provided.

However, she stressed the need for the government to put more resources into developing educational institutions and the health sector in the state.

Health / Why We Are On Strike —doctors Strike Paralyses Hospitals In Lagos by made001(m): 3:21am On Dec 21, 2013
THE National President, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr Osahon Enabulele, on Friday said the ongoing doctors‘ warning strike was aimed at drawing Federal Government’s attention to the health sector’s problems.

Enabulele spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos against the backdrop of NMA’s resolutions at the 2013 National Health Summit in Asaba in January.

“Virtually all sectors are involved in one industrial conflagration or the other, in terms of strike, as a result of government‘s poor response to the needs of workers.

“People, over the years, have gotten a pattern of securing their demands through agitations and through strike.

“But, I think why the people always feel pained when doctors are on strike is that the responsibility of a doctor is all about life.

“And when we made those resolutions in Asaba, which was an all-embracing resolution, we also had no illusion that we could turn around very drastically the mentality and the psyche of the people who have been attuned to a way of life.

“There was agreement, there was understanding.

“But again, when you have a breach of some of these understandings, there is an extent to which you can continually draw the people back from, of course, responding because they buy from the same market with other people.”

Enabulele also urged governments to always keep to agreements reached with the doctors and provide the enabling environment to avoid strikes in the sector.

Meanwhile, the ongoing five-day warning strike has paralysed activities in public hospitals in Lagos State, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.

NAN correspondents who visited the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, reported that the strike paralysed activities in the institutions.

NAN correspondents also visited the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi.

Consultants and resident doctors were unavailable to attend to scores of patients who thronged the hospitals.

At LUTH, some patients were prepared to wait till Monday when the strike would be called off.

The five-day warning strike will end tomorrow.

Sports / Liverpool Focus On Main Chance To Be Top Of The Tree At Christmas by made001(m): 1:04am On Dec 21, 2013
Liverpool's manager, Brendan Rodgers, senses that things are going to get even better.

It is highly appropriate that Vincent Tan visits Anfield 24 hours after Liverpool secured Luis Suárez on a new long-term contract and for a game that may take Brendan Rodgers' team top of the Premier League at Christmas. Liverpool were last in contention at this stage in 2008-09 but back then they were the circus act. Now it is the poor unfortunates of Cardiff City who must contend with a divisive owner while harmony helps Anfield move on.

Liverpool were under the near-ruinous regime of Tom Hicks and George Gillett five years ago yet still amid their best domestic campaign under Rafael Benítez, one that ended in a second-place finish four points adrift of Manchester United.

There has been revisionism over how close Liverpool came to the title that season – a defeat at Middlesbrough in February cut them adrift before a rousing finale of 10 wins in 11 games closed the gap – but few would dispute the severity of the distractions.

And they were everywhere. The deployment of Liverpool's then No7 and major summer signing Robbie Keane now seems trivial compared with the debt the owners placed on the club, the growing, organised protests against their regime and Benítez's dispute over a new contract – to name but a few.

The speed and success of Suárez's contract negotiations this week serves as a stark contrast and demonstration of the restoration work undertaken by Fenway Sports Group, Hicks's and Gillett's successor. It should also help concentrate Liverpool's focus on qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since the off-field crises of 2008-09 and on achieving the win over Cardiff that would deliver first place before Arsenal's game with Chelsea on Monday.

"It would certainly be a statement to be top at Christmas," says Rodgers, clearly not content with the statement Liverpool made with the Suárez deal on Friday. "I'd rather be there. It shows you are near enough at the halfway point of the season and you're the best team. So it is a good statement but something that can also give you the confidence and belief for the second half of the season. But we are not getting carried away.

"It is terrific reward for the players, very satisfying for the supporters, great for them. They talk here of the holy trinity between players, managers and the supporters being all together and we have shown that real togetherness across the club. If we can stay like that and keep working, we are going to be in with a great chance of achieving the objective."

There was little togetherness in 2008‑09 and, unlike five years ago, there has been clear improvement in Liverpool's performance level as the season has progressed, with the exception of the recent defeat at Hull City.

Benítez's team excelled in a 5-1 win at Newcastle United on 28 December but did not win again in the league until February, the month that also saw Liverpool's then manager launch his infamous "facts" verbal attack on Sir Alex Ferguson.

That was never the moment of weakness that Benítez's critics claimed. Liverpool had a winnable game at Stoke City on the Saturday, a supposedly divided United faced Chelsea on the Sunday and Benítez sensed an opportunity to turn the screw on Ferguson's team. It backfired as Liverpool were held to a goalless draw while United won 3-0 and it was only after that Middlesbrough defeat that his team delivered an outstanding run of form.

If there is a parallel between then and now, it came with Rodgers' admission after the Hull defeat that his Liverpool squad is not strong enough to cope with injuries to key players such as Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.

Last Sunday's 5-0 rout of Tottenham Hotspur without Steven Gerrard and Sturridge, therefore, represented much more than just the end of André Villas-Boas at White Hart Lane.

Rodgers added: "There is no doubt it will increase the players' confidence level to be top. Of course if you haven't been there over a period of time or for a few years, it's a new experience but you've got to embrace it. You have to enjoy it. I've seen it already this week.

"I've seen the confidence and belief in training go up a notch and that's because of a big performance in a big game at Tottenham. I see inherently now the belief in how we work.

"We've just got to keep that focus and belief and not look behind so much. You are always looking forward. That is something we will continue to do. The aim for us is to get to the last 10 games and be in with a shout. That's the business end when you organise your season. Our way of playing is improving. Our style is improving.

"We are learning to play differently and that comes into it at the second half of the season. When the pressure comes you know you want your players to have the ball. If that's how you work and that's your nature, then you know that's how you'll play.

"If we are still in and around it with 10 games to go, then maybe then we will talk about what we can achieve but at this moment in time I'm just concentrating on what I talked about last year – that in the second half of the season we will be even better. It is important to retain our focus and concentration to get to that level."

Computers / Airtel Nigeria, Google Partner To Launch Free Web Search On Mobile by made001(m): 5:42pm On Dec 17, 2013
Airtel Nigeria and Google have announced an internet service partnership that allows customers to access mobile web search and other feature-phone-friendly versions of Gmail and Google without getting billed.

The Free Zone service aims to allow more people to access the internet, targeting first time internet users who have not purchased data bundles and often find basic services like email, mobile web browsing and social applications to be expensive.

Airtel Nigeria said with Free Zone phone users can take advantage of the web to grow their businesses or keep in touch with friends and family without the fear of unknown data costs, and also make more informed choices about their next data device.

Juliet Ehimuan, country manager of Google Nigeria, said: “We are excited to be working with Airtel to introduce Free Zone powered by Google to Nigeria. We believe in the power of the internet to create better opportunities, and working with Airtel on this makes it possible for anyone with a phone to get Internet services at little or no cost.
“Just like our other access projects, this gives people easier access to information in a way that benefits not just themselves, but their businesses, and by extension Nigeria’s economy.”

Deepak Srivastava, chief operating officer (COO) and executive director of Airtel Nigeria, said breaking down the barriers to internet adoption is critical for Nigeria to keep up with the rest of world in terms of social and economic development.

“We are, therefore, really proud to bring this spectacular innovation to Nigerians, especially our customers, who will now have seamless access to Google Search, Gmail and Google by simply using Airtel SIM cards on any data-enabled handset free of charge. This is indeed another good reason to remain an Airtel customer or to joint Airtel if you are not yet a customer,” he said.

Sports / Andre Villas-boas Never Understood How To Find Spark For Tottenham by made001(m): 10:37am On Dec 17, 2013
With Andre Villas-Boas it is easy to get lost in the language, the science, the philosophies and the systems, but at Tottenham Hotspur he was failing in the basic task of any manager, unable to get the best out of his players.

Spurs did not finish fourth last year, despite the implausible contributions of Gareth Bale, and this season they are not looking like finishing much closer. Fourth was the minimum requirement for Villas-Boas and he conceded, in his last public words as Spurs manager, that they were "completely far off" their expectations in the Premier League.

Villas-Boas just could never get his teeth into this squad. With the exception of Bale, who is a different category of footballer, not one Spurs player seemed to develop or blossom under his leadership.

Last season, Spurs' general play was methodical and ponderous and they needed Bale to break open games by himself. This year, without him, they often struggled to do that.

As Liverpool showed Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, in the game that cost Villas-Boas his job, there are things that a world-class player can do that seven good ones cannot.

While the new post-Bale squad had strength in depth, Villas-Boas could never extract the required spark from players.

Good attacking football requires trust, confidence and understanding but for all the work on the training pitch, none of those things were evident on the pitch at Spurs this season.

After 16 league games – almost half of a season – they had scored just 15 goals, fewer, somehow, than Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion.

Villas-Boas might say that the squad was not of his making, and it did seem rather unbalanced. There was no second-choice left-back but too many middling midfielders, and Villas-Boas never seemed to get to grip with the numbers.

A manager needs to know his best team but even on Sunday, four months into the Premier League season, he was still throwing combinations of players at the wall and hoping that something would stick.

There were too many players of a similar level and with very little sense, even know, of who was better at what.

In central midfield and in attacking midfield, selection looked to be done by rota, with little sense of long-term integration. Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen, Lewis Holtby, Erik Lamela, Aaron Lennon and Sandro all started between eight and 12 games this season.

Of the new signings, the men whose contribution was meant to replace Bale, Eriksen, Lamela and Roberto Soldado – the three attackers from whom so much expected – gave very little and Villas-Boas was left with starting forwards who pre-dated his time at Spurs, Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend and Jermain Defoe.

Villas-Boas was insisting on Sunday night that Spurs' form in the Europa League and League Cup was "completely different", and they do have a quarter-final against West Ham United tomorrow, as well as last-32 ties in the Europa League against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

As much as Villas-Boas valued the Europa League, the Champions League is the only game in town and it is where Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to be.

Villas-Boas could not get enough out of his squad to take them there, so no Spurs will try to find someone who can.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has confirmed the suspension of its over five-months-old strike, DailyPost can report.

ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos Chapter, Karo Ogbinaka, on Tuesday told Channels Television that the union decided to call off the protracted protest after a marathon meeting held on Monday in Minna, Niger State capital.

Ogbinaka added that, in line with ASUU procedures, the different chapters of union would meet on Wednesday to inform members and managements of Universities about the latest development.

“We expect the students to resume and their members to go back to work immediately after the congress meeting, and we expect the government to keep to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)”, Ogninaka stated.
