nairaarea:
My lord,

We all stand before history. I am a man of peace, of ideas. Appalled by the denigrating poverty of my people who live on a richly endowed land, distressed by their political marginalization and economic strangulation, angered by the devastation of their land, their ultimate heritage, anxious to preserve their right to life and to a decent living, and determined to usher to this country as a whole a fair and just democratic system which protects everyone and every ethnic group and gives us all a valid claim to human civilization, I have devoted my intellectual and material resources, my very life, to a cause in which I have total belief and from which I cannot be blackmailed or intimidated. I have no doubt at all about the ultimate success of my cause, no matter the trials and tribulations which I and those who believe with me may encounter on our journey. Neither imprisonment nor death can stop our ultimate victory.

I repeat that we all stand before history. I and my colleagues are not the only ones on trial. Shell is here on trial and it is as well that it is represented by counsel said to be holding a watching brief. The Company has, indeed, ducked this particular trial, but its day will surely come and the lessons learnt here may prove useful to it for there is no doubt in my mind that the ecological war that the Company has waged in the Delta will be called to question sooner than later and the crimes of that war be duly punished. The crime of the Company's dirty wars against the Ogoni people will also be punished.

On trial also is the Nigerian nation, its present rulers and those who assist them. Any nation which can do to the weak and disadvantaged what the Nigerian nation has done to the Ogoni, loses a claim to independence and to freedom from outside influence. I am not one of those who shy away from protesting injustice and oppression, arguing that they are expected in a military regime. The military do not act alone. They are supported by a gaggle of politicians, lawyers, judges, academics and businessmen, all of them hiding under the claim that they are only doing their duty, men and women too afraid to wash their pants of urine.

We all stand on trial, my lord, for by our actions we have denigrated our Country and jeopardized the future of our children. As we subscribe to the sub-normal and accept double standards, as we lie and cheat openly, as we protect injustice and oppression, we empty our classrooms, denigrate our hospitals, fill our stomachs with hunger and elect to make ourselves the slaves of those who ascribe to higher standards, pursue the truth, and honour justice, freedom, and hard work. I predict that the scene here will be played and replayed by generations yet unborn. Some have already cast themselves in the role of villains, some are tragic victims, some still have a chance to redeem themselves. The choice is for each individual.

I predict that the denoument of the riddle of the Niger delta will soon come. The agenda is being set at this trial. Whether the peaceful ways I have favoured will prevail depends on what the oppressor decides, what signals it sends out to the waiting public.

In my innocence of the false charges I face Here, in my utter conviction, I call upon the Ogoni people, the peoples of the Niger delta, and the oppressed ethnic minorities of Nigeria to stand up now and fight fearlessly and peacefully for their rights. History is on their side. God is on their side. For the Holy Quran says in Sura 42, verse 41: "All those that fight when oppressed incur no guilt, but Allah shall punish the oppressor." How you guys call this hipo a hero surprises me. He is the exact opposite of what a hero and an activist should be. How can he support the betrayal and massacre of his brothers and the Igbos during the Biafran genocide in the 60s and in the 90s want to claim to be a human right activist.

Abacha was even kind to him. If we had our way, there would have been no born for reburial.

I am wondering why people keep referring to Emeka Ihedioha. Emeka has not done anything wrong. If not for him, APC would have taken over the leadership of the house. So instead of blackmailing him , we should praise him for standing firm and protecting the interest of his party. The house leader should shut up her mouth. What makes her think that Emeka is also aware in totality Tambuwal`s plan. They may have a close relationship , but in nigerian politics personal interest reigns supreme.

Cardinal Onaiyekan: In the Eyes of the Storm
The Cardinal’s Sword of Vengeance
By Prof. AMADI-AZUOGU
The Agu Na-Eche Mba of Mbaise
Professor of New Testament Studies
(October 24, 2014)
His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan
(A Deeply Troubled Cardinal)
Your Eminence,
The great iroko that has blocked the roads of Mbaise - the true “Agadaba Gbachiri Uzo; the one, who has caused Mbaise the greatest stress and distress together with Bishop Okpalaeke; the insomnia of the Mbaise nation; the one so distrusted and so unbelievable in the diocese of Ahiara; the one in the eyes of the storm; we salute you! Your sword of vengeance is at work - the sword you planted in Mbaise in the person of “my new vicar/delegate” and co. And fire has erupted on the mountain of mago-mago. Sure, Okpalaeke will now be very happy that his thugs are finally on a violent rampage to enthrone him as another “Bishop Mago-Mago.”
Your Eminence: You came to Mbaise without the Canon Law and hurried out without the Canon Law. You came with disorder and left behind your disorder in the hands of your appointed vicar/delegate and his henchmen. Whether inside or outside Ahiara Diocese, every act of yours in Mbaise has been marked by lawlessness and disorder. Ironically, the one, who was supposed to have been the custodian of Church law became the destruction of the same law. Your actions were based only on the fact that you have a red biretta on your head as a Roman Cardinal. Hence, every Canon in the Codex, typical of the Nigerian factor, became an exception for you leading us always to ask you: Where is your Canon Law or show us your Exception Code? With you, the Codex became moribund in Mbaise and Onaiyekology became a replacement, which is the embodiment of mago-mago. Your total failure in Mbaise is because the “Mago-Mago Code” was not allowed to become the law of the Mbaise nation. The most unfortunate thing is that your “gang of eight priests” eventually embraced this “mago-mago code.” This was the codex used in the St Brigid’s attack.
Your Eminence: Instead of upholding the rule of law in Mbaise, you introduced the era of lawlessness and chose the lawless “Gang of eight” to help you implement lawless acts. Accordingly, your principle of jurisprudence became Onaiyekology, which is inimical to Catholic jurisprudence that is anchored on justice and fairness for all. Once you ignored the Canon Law in your actions, you ignored the code of conduct of Catholicism as well because the Codex is also the Code of Conduct of the Catholic Church. On account of this, you became a Cardinal without a code of conduct in Mbaise, making appointments not consistent with Canon 272 of the Codex. This illegality produced an “akpụrụka (fake) vicar general/delegate,” whose recklessness has now put you in the eyes of the storm. The buck stops with you. Therefore, you are responsible for all the acts of lawlessness perpetuated by your “new vicar/delegate” and your henchmen. We are holding you directly responsible for the armed attack on St. Brigid’s rectory. You cannot appoint an illegal vicar general and not take responsibility for his illegal acts.
As it is now, instead of being the defender of the law in Mbaise, you became a breaker of the law, refusing to work with church institutions in Ahiara Diocese; refusing to work with the college of consultors; refusing to work with the presbyterium of Ahiara Diocese of more than 220 priests; seeking the canonical possession of Ahiara Diocese from the army and police; instigating Cardinal Filoni and other authorities against the Mbaise nation. Now, your disciples, the eight disgruntled priests you call your presbyterium, are following in your footsteps every inch of the way since you chose them to help you institute a war of Mbaise against Mbaise. Now, Your Eminence, come to St. Brigid’s Parish, Nnarambia, Ahiara and see the mayhem your recklessness and Okpalaeke’s arrogance of power has caused. Calling the police authorities, as it has been alleged that you have been doing, is not a solution to this booboo coming from you. If you are still the apostolic administrator, this is the time to come to Mbaise and face the charges against you. Your Eminence, YOU HAVE WRECKED AHIARA DIOCESE. We are so ashamed of your ungodly actions as the Cardinal of the Roman Church. Look at the scandal emanating from your actions. Listen to the Imo State Police Command advice you: “Meanwhile, Imo State Police Command has appealed to the Administrator of Ahiara Diocese, who doubles as the Archbishop of Abuja Ecclesiastical Province, His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, to find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis bedeviling Ahiara Diocese, since the death of Bishop Victor Chikwe” (http://www.vanguardngr.com/…/catholic-priests-fight-dirty…/…). And also listen to the Governor of Imo State, Nigeria, advising you in the Vanguard under the caption: “Okorocha sues for peace over Ahiara Catholic Diocese crisis” (http://www.vanguardngr.com/…/okorocha-sues-peace-ahiara-ca…/). The Governor is asking you to take away the “pieces” you have left behind and bring back the PEACE that existed before your arrival in Mbaise as apostolic administrator. Everybody now knows that your appointment as the apostolic administrator of Ahiara Diocese was hugely a monumental mistake. And many of the bishops are now scratching their heads in agreement with this characterization. Some of them can be seen scratching their eyelids.
Even in absentia, you have continued with this lawlessness via your illegal “presbyterium.” Since following the provisions of the Code would never legally allow you to achieve “mago-mago” in Mbaise, you had to follow the provisions of your “mago-mago code.” Accordingly, you have employed every unchristian method in your attempt to establish yourself as the Defender-in-Chief of injustice. Hence, YOU HAVE BECOME THE EMBODIMENT OF WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CHURCH IN NIGERIA. Bishop Chikwe warned against making you the Cardinal. And in his grave today, he has been vindicated. If only the bishops paid heed to him, the story would have been different today! Now, we have an apostolic administration without a de facto apostolic administrator.
The Otukpo - Benue State - Declaration
Your Eminence, there is something baffling about your activities with the gang of eight in Ahiara Diocese. As you know, truth is truth and does not change. But lies keep changing. For every one truth, you need only one truth to maintain it. But for every one lie, you need multiplied lies to maintain it because “lie begets lie.” Hence, one continues lying until one fits the unshakeable definition of a liar. This is now the situation in Ahiara Diocese situated in the context of your Otukpo Declaration that took place in Benue State, Nigeria in September 2013. Everything took place in the gathering of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria that took place in Otukpo. As you may recall, during that Conference, an Mbaise representative was present to make the case against injustice in Ahiara Diocese. This witness, among others, was there when you addressed the Conference on the Mbaise situation.
Hence, Your Eminence, we are sure that you have no dementia. Surely, you still remember that Otukpo declaration of September 2013. In that

gleaf: Since this issue started I have always tried to restrain myself from commenting, but I don't understand why the priests from Ahiara are rejecting the new bishop? Is he not a catholic ? I believe they are fighting for something else other than spiritual upliftment and why? Is that not the primary purpose of been a priest? Where has humility gone? Why fighting the church just cos you THINK youy are wise. Whay can't you all allow God to take control? Will I be wrong if I term you all desperate and greedy? IF some set of people are imposing bishops on you , then take it to God in prayers! That's why you are a priest and be humble cos a bishop muwt be humble. I don't know how the whole thing started but I think the attitude of the priests from the diocese does not reflect that of a catholic priest or talk more of Bishop

You should have attempted to educate yourself before dabbling into it and calling people names. From your "body language" you are not better than the people you are calling desperate because you sound more desperate in jumping into what you

http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php/opinion/columnist/140600-onyekakeyah-ahiara-diocese-bishops-and-the-sword-of-damocles

THE Sword of Damocles was used to describe the danger that faces the one who sits on the throne. Dionysius (II) a 4th century tyrant of Syracuse, a Greek city in Southern Italy, lived in great luxury. He was very rich and comfortable. He even had a court of sycophants whose duty was to fatter and praise him. Damocles was one of the sycophants. One day, after Damocles had showered compliments to King Dionysius about his great wealth and luxurious life, Dionysius turned to Damocles and asked him to try out living his life to have a taste of it. Damocles readily accepted the king’s proposal. Dionysius then ordered that the throne be prepared for Damocles to experience the same life he lived. Dionysius also ordered that a sword be suspended from the ceiling over the throne, held only by a single hair of a horse tail. Damocles mounted the throne and was enjoying until suddenly, he noticed the sharp sword dangling over his head. Alarmed, Damocles immediately requested that he be excused to return to his poorer but safer life.

I have used the Sword of Damocles to preface this comment on the unending Ahiara Catholic Diocese. It is unfortunate that the seat of a bishop, which naturally, is tasking in other climes is seen in Nigeria as a luxurious office that makes one rich, wealthy and powerful. Of course the corrupt Nigerian system is to blame. If the seat of a bishop were just there for luxury and enjoyment, Pope Benedict XVI, would not have resigned at the nick of time. He stated that his deteriorating strength due to old age could no longer allow him meet the physical and mental demands of the papacy.

I would not have embarked on another comment on the Ahiara Diocese imbroglio now had it not been some nauseating and totally unchristian actions and decisions being introduced into the saga. Reports indicate that in an attempt to crush the hapless Catholic faithful in Ahiara Diocese, the Catholic hierarchy in Nigeria, working in cahoots with the Catholic bishops of the old Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, has decided to impose severe punishments on the Ahiara faithful for asking that justice be done in the appointment of their bishop.

Reports say the bishops have decided not to ordain any priest of bishop from Ahiara Diocese. Is that part of the ministry of Jesus Christ? The implication is that since December 7, 2012 when the crisis erupted in the diocese over the wrongful appointment of Monsignor Peter Okpaleke as the bishop-elect, there has been no priestly ordination in the diocese. Consequently, the fate of scores of seminarians who have completed their priestly training is hanging in the balance. This decision is typical Nigerian politician’s vindictive style, which is visited on opponents. It is not surprising. The bishops are Nigerians, indeed Africans, with a greedy and voracious gene. That gene is behind the misrule across Africa.

Monsignor Peter Okpaleke, was hand-picked from Umubele Parish in far away Awka Diocese in Anambra State. Ahiara Diocese is in Imo State. The controversial bishop-elect has never stepped nor worked in Ahiara Diocese. How can a stranger shepherd a strange flock? This is the crux of the matter. It has become clear that those who smuggled Okpaleke into the bishopric selection list have over the years deliberately embarked on a vicious campaign to plant their brothers, kits and kin in all the bishopric seats across Igbo land and beyond. They have succeeded in doing this before hitting the rocks in Ahiara Diocese.

For instance, all the auxiliary bishops appointed for Issele-Uku, Okigwe, Onithsa since 1990 were from the old Anambra dioceses. And the current bishops of Onitsha Archdiocese, Nnewi, Awka, Enugu and Awgu are all from the same locality in Anambra State. Also, the bishops of Minna, Uromi, Issele-Uku, Benin, Aba, Okigwe and now Ahiara are all from the same old Anambra dioceses. Who is behind this neo-colonialism in religious garb? When did Anambra become the Ireland of Nigeria that sends missionaries to all parts of Nigeria?

When Pope Francis appointed his Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan of Abuja as the apostolic administrator of Ahiara Diocese, many heaved a sigh of relief that the Pope’s representative would right the wrongs in the diocese. Interestingly, the appointment came shortly after His Holiness Pope Francis addressed all the Catholic nuncios and apostolic delegates at a crucial meeting in Rome. The Pope had emphasized the critical conditions that must be met in the search for candidates for bishop.

Among the requirements is that candidates “must be pastors who are close to their people”. This is the foundation upon which the search for a new bishop must be laid. Unfortunately, the Nigerian bishops have over the decades blatantly flouted this rule and still want to continue with it. This is why they are jittery, having found themselves in a very tight corner they don’t know how to wriggle out. As I said in my previous comment, the fact that the Pope stressed on “pastors who are close to their people” as the ultimate qualifier, shows that the appointment of Bishop Okpaleke for Ahiara Diocese was completely flawed. Whoever put him forward acted in error.

Back to the issue of ordination. Cardinal John Onaiyekan was appointed to perform pastoral duties in Ahiara until a new bishop is installed. One of such duties is the ordination of members of the clergy. From all indications, it is obvious that the cardinal has relegated those duties and instead joined the fray of the bishops in Onithsa Ecclesiastical Province who are bent on subduing Ahiara. They are sitting on the neck of Ahiara people. The cardinal has not hidden his personal bias against Ahiara. He had lambasted the faithful there during the last Easter celebration before he was appointed the administrator. Evidently, the appointment gave him the opportunity to now accomplish his vendetta. If the cardinal wanted to resolve the crisis in Ahiara, he would have done it since six months he was appointed. Instead, he appears to be weak and unwilling to do the rightful.

I would like to state that the refusal to ordain priests and bishops of Ahiara extraction amounts to spiritual warfare on the people. The entire Catholic Church stands to lose. Whereas the harsh social and economic condition in the country is telling on Nigerians; to add spiritual tyranny to it is in a way diabolical. There is no blessing in doing that. The excuse being offered by Cardinal Onaiyekan that he can’t ordain priests he didn’t know is flawed. The cardinal does not need to know the candidates for ordination. Catholics worldwide know that bishops ordain priests that are presented to them for that purpose by recognized seminaries of the Church. During his papal visit to Nigeria, Pope John Paul II ordained priests he didn’t know. So, what is Cardinal Onaiyekan insinuating?

Last September, the Catholic bishops at their 2013 plenary meeting in Oturkpo, Benue State, expressed concern over the protracted strike by lecturers in public universities Nigeria. While the bishops were worried about the plight of millions of students wasting at home, they failed to tell the world that they were also sitting on the neck of seminarians from Ahiara Diocese who have completed their priestly studies and are due for ordination. That is double standards on the part of the bishops.

It is unfortunate that the Ugandan born Papal Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, who is in a position to resolve the Ahiara crisis, has not helped matters. Archbishop Kasujja is the first black papal Ambassador. He has been priest for over 40 years and bishop for over fifteen years. Apart from Uganda, his home country, he has served in nine other countries as apostolic nuncio and has generally maintained good record. It is unfortunate that his latest appointment to Nigeria may tarnish his reputation in the light of his direct involvement in supporting the injustice done to Ahiara. He should not allow the Nigerian corruption to mar his career.

The bishops are reportedly afraid that reversing their unjust decision on Okpaleke to give Ahiara a bishop close to the people will cause revolt across many dioceses in Nigeria. If that be the case, so be it. The church will gain and not the clique perpetrating the injustice. The bishops know that over the years, they have sown the wind by allowing cronyism and favouritism to dictate who is made bishop. Now that the bubble has burst in Ahiara, let those that have been cheated over the years demand for justice. It is better to right the wrong now than to continue covering up what is a potential threat to the church in Nigeria. Bishop Okpaleke should learn the lesson of the Sword of Damocles. It would be better for him to remain what he was peacefully than get embroiled in a crisis that will hunt him forever.

Comrade Austin Okeke has emerged as the 5th National President of FUTO ALUMNI after a tension soaked electoral process. In an appreciative message he had this to say " Great ALUMNI, Thank God and thank you for electing me to serve you as the 5th national president. There is no no victor or vanquished . The journey to advancement starts now. Together we shall triumph"

Congrats to you my comrade. We shall all join you to advance our great ALMA MATA
