Education / ASUP, NASU, SSANIP Embark On Indefinite Strike by magikmind: 2:10am On Jun 01, 2017
The joint union of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Delta State-owned polytechnics, yesterday embarked on indefinite strike following the state government’s indiscreet disposition to the plight of the staff of the respective polytechnics.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Ozoro and signed by the Joint Union Chairman, Thomas Ojuye, the unions lamented the failure of the state government to begin “full implementation of the new revised scheme of services for polytechnics and other similar tertiary institution in the country, stoppage of promotion from CONTISS 11 to 13, non-implementation of migration of technologists, executive and technical officers, instructors and confidential secretaries cadre on CONTISS 12 and above.”

Others are “migration of CONTISS 11 and below, stoppage of payment of promotion arrears, withdrawal of 65 years retirement policy, dismissal of chairmen of ASUP and NASU in Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi- Uku and the recent law on the acquisition of PhD certificates as prerequisites for promotion to the post of Chief Lecturer.”

The statement further added that; “In the light of the above lingering issues since 2014 and the state government indiscreet disposition to the plight of the staff of the respective polytechnics, the union hereby issue a notice of indefinite strike action, which will commence on May 30, 2017.” The Joint Chairman, Thomas Ojuye, also warned that any lecturer who failed to adhere to the above instruction from the unions will be severely dealt with just as he noted that a monitoring committee had been set up in the three polytechnics in the state for effective compliance with the strike action.
Jobs/Vacancies / 10 Reasons Why A Recruiter Hates Your Cv? by magikmind: 7:23pm On May 28, 2017
Your CV or Resume is your first impression with a recruiter. It can leaving a lasting impression – both positively and negatively.

Get it right and the likelihood is that you’ll get an interview. Get it wrong and that’s the last you’ll hear from them. You won’t get the chance to meet them face to face.

What can you do to make sure that you get an interview?

Well, the starting point is to avoid the following pitfalls. Too many times candidates fall into one or more of these traps. Take time to craft your CV or Resume. Remember it’s your brochure. It represents you and is your first impression.

10 CV / Resume Pitfalls to Avoid

1. Poor Layouts or Odd Formats

Now I’m not a big fan of the traditional black text on white background as a way of ensuring that your CV or Resume stands out. I like to see a little bit of creativity to show that you’re different from everyone else.

Regardless of whether you go the traditional black text on white route or something more creative, be careful. Your CV or Resume needs to be easy on the eye of the recruiter. They need to be able to glance at it quickly and find the information they need. They will not spend a lot of time searching for information.

Put time and effort into crafting your CV or Resume. Just remember that its purpose is to get you an interview.

2. Too Many Fonts

Whilst I’m a fan of being creative to stand out from the crowd, it does not mean using lots of different fonts to do it.

Stick to 1 or 2 fonts. No more.

If you do use more than 1 font make sure that it looks appropriate and easy to read next to the main one.

When we read text our eyes adjust to the font and its size. Too many fonts becomes difficult to read. It increases the likelihood that you’ll end up in the ‘No’ pile.

3. Spelling Errors

Make sure that every word that you’ve used is spelt correctly. Use a dictionary or spellchecker on your computer to double check a spelling. Then have someone else check your CV to make sure everything is spelt correctly. Sometimes spellcheckers aren’t always right.

Don’t leave it to chance. Recruiters want to see that their potential new recruit is proficient in the use of language.

4. Grammatical Errors

Avoid long sentences. Keep your sentences short and to the point. It’ll make it that much easier to read.

Be careful with punctuation, commas and full stops.

Again once you’ve completed your CV or Resume have it checked for grammatical errors.

5. Weak Personal Statement

Personally I’m not a big fan of personal statements at the top of CVs or Resumes.

Why?

Because they generally say little about a candidate. Rather they appear like a bucket list of everything that the candidate is e.g. ‘great working as part of a team or working on my own’ or that they are ‘innovative, creative….’

I really dislike them!

Do you get the idea? But many recruiters like to see them. So if you’re going to use one make it relevant to the role you’re applying for. Tailor it. Be specific. Use it to draw a recruiter in to reading more about you.

Just please don’t use it as a bucket to throw every cliche into.

6. Meaningless Words

CVs and Resumes have a tendency to include meaningless words.

Words that we think sound good. Words that sound powerful and impressive.

Unfortunately those words create the opposite impression. I wrote about this in ’28 Overused Meaningless Resume Words’. Take a look at the most popular meaningless words.

Be specific in your language. Make it easy to read and understand.

7. Lacking Relevance

This is a real bugbear of mine. Far too many CVs or Resumes are prepared once and then used for every job application. No two jobs are the same, so your CV or Resume cannot be the same for each role. Make it specific to the role you’re applying for. Make it relevant.

8. Highlighting Tasks Not Achievements

Recruiters want to see what you’ve achieved.

Too many CVs and Resumes list the responsibilities or tasks for a job role.

Your emphasis needs to be on what you achieved. What value you brought to the role and the tasks.

9. Gaps

Recruiters hate gaps on CVs and Resumes. Gaps in employment usually raise alarm bells for a recruiters.

It may not stop you from getting an interview, but chances are you will get the question, ‘Why is there a gap between ‘x’ date and ‘y’ date?’

You’ll need to be ready with an answer.

Better still explain the gap in your CV. Show that you’ve used the time wisely and positively.

10. Too Long

How long is too long for a CV or Resume?

Well it depends.

Some recruiters will tell you to stick to 2 pages, but sometimes that just isn’t enough space to detail everything about you.

One thing is for sure, 8 pages is too long! I had a candidate with a CV that lasted 8 pages. Far too long!!

The point of your CV or Resume is to interest and intrigue a recruiter. A CV or Resume is not your life story. Make sure that is contains all the important points. It’s long enough to cover them, but short enough to keep a recruiter interested.

CV Pitfalls

If you’re about to put together your CV or Resume or if you’ve already crafted it, take some time to review it against these 10 pitfalls. Does yours fall into 1 or more of these? If it does change it.

Remember you want to stand out for the right reasons, not the wrong ones!

Webmasters / Benefits Of Using Nigeria’s Domain Name, .ng by magikmind: 7:08pm On May 28, 2017
Having an online presence is a sure way to project your personal initiative or business to the world, be it nationally or internationally and at the core of this is a website that does the job of projecting the best of you online. Your website needs an address or a name if you like, hence the need for a domain.

In having a website, however, one is left with the choice of either going for a foreign domain registry such as the .com, .org, etc., or the local .NG domain.

When I say ‘local’, I do not mean it in the derogatory sense rather, I mean it in the sense that it is a proudly Nigerian brand available in Nigeria and also of international value.

Nigeria as a nation is blessed with a unique domain string known as .NG which is her Country Code Top Level Domain and we should be proud of this national asset.

In a 2013 joint survey conducted by SMEDAN and the National Bureau of Statistics, it was found that there were about 37 million Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria.

You can imagine how cool it will be if a sizable percentage of these MSME’s actually patronise the .NG domain for the development of their website with the national identity that comes with it.

For Nigerians to fully embrace the use of the .NG domain name for their website, they need to know the benefits that can be derived from the domain name. Some of these benefits are highlighted in this piece.

The first benefit accruing to businesses that register the .NG domain name in Nigeria is that the .NG domains are ranked first on the search engines during a search online. This means that, using it and maintaining good SEO for your website will, over time, lead to an increase in local traffic.

Why do you think that Google would rather serve you results using google.com.ng when you search for stuff within Nigeria and if you travel to, say, Ghana, and use the same device, it will go ahead and serve you results via google.com.gh? What is even interesting is that, in the case of Nigeria, Google has both .com.ng as well as .ng, an example of a forward looking company.

Secondly, registering .NG domain gives those that do business with you an air of confidence and trust in doing business with you. This is because the .NG domain is managed by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NiRA, which is a Nigerian outfit where clients can lodge complaints in case they have issues with your website.

A third benefit is that the .NG domain is affordable and payments are made in Naira as against trying to source for forex for registering a foreign domain. On the aggregate, this will go on to save businesses and the country huge resources in hard foreign exchange.

A fourth benefit is speed. I will not be too technical but, each time you visit any website with a foreign string, there is usually a delay that occurs because of the calls that have to be made before the web page opens. If you, however, use the .NG string and also host your website locally, then, it helps to improve speed which is now a major ranking factor.

On my part, I am making conscious and deliberate efforts to walk the talk by flaunting the Nigerian brand online.

In my interactions and networking, I notice that folks from other parts of the world use their own local domain with pride. South African businesses are so proud to use their country’s domain, .Co.Za domain and in the UK, you find the .Co.Uk domain prevalent. The reverse is the case in Nigeria and this is why I am passionately preaching that we should imbibe the culture of patronising our own .NG domain brand in Nigeria.

Statistics show that Nigeria has just about 100,000 domains in the .NG registry compared to South Africa that has over one million domains in the .Co.Za registry. Does this not look like we are yet to start, especially, when you compare both countries’ population?

According to worldometers.info, Nigeria currently has an estimated population of 190 million people compared to that of South Africa which is currently estimated to be about 55 million. The big question is, what is South Africa doing to achieve this feat that we are not doing in Nigeria?

I must commend Nigeria Internet Registration Association for the outstanding job it has done so far since its inception. I, hereby, call for more advocacy and education that will get more Nigerians to appreciate what is ours and also get government to lead the way and let others follow.

Many government ministries and agencies are already on the .NG registry but if you ask me I believe it should be total compliance and nothing less. As long as it is related to any tier of government, it should be .NG.

The domain name is a multi-billion dollar industry and Africa is yet to get started in the game, but the opportunities are immense, especially if we start doing the right things now as a continent.

Finally, we must support our own. Can you imagine what will happen, if only five per cent of the estimated 190 million Nigerians decide to own domains that are built with the Nigerian ccTLD?

That would be around eight million domain names that serve as a foundation for businesses, ventures and causes. Would this not further strengthen the Nigerian brand, dignify her on the Internet and also protect her dwindling foreign reserves?

Celebrities / Hushpuppi Writes In Open Letter To Every Ghetto Kid by magikmind: 1:00am On May 09, 2017
‘Dream big!’ — Is what echoes in the words of Hushpuppi to young struggling Nigerians.

Ray HushPuppi has some words of motivation for ever hustling Nigerian this good Friday. The letter reads thus:

A Letter to the Ghetto Kid:

As a man that I am today who developed from being one of you guys, who went through the same struggles you are presently going through, who had to run and jump hurdles where other kids just walk past the same situation in a better environment with better resources and much provisions, I know the society do not expect you to make it, the government don’t care about your future, they toy and joke around making rules and laws that only affect you and benefit the rich.

You lack everything it requires to become who you might have loved to be, do the things you would have loved to do or to live the life you may have seen on TV or the internet, which I know you even have limited access to because there’s never power supply for such, which means you are deprived most of the things that can be learnt through TV and internet in the first place which makes your dreams smaller, quicker to fade away but I want you to know that darkness you are, without the dark, the stars won’t shine and so you can shine out if that darkness.

You have been deprived so many right a child deserves and the world look down on you because you are nothing but a clot of blood miraculously turned a baby, and an unfortunate one at that.

Good health, good foods or good education hasn’t been in any way your chance to have. Looking at you disgusts not your brethren only but even strangers are not so impressed for your unhealthy appearance. Your strength; courage; and dreams are nothing but hallucination just because you were not supposed to dream big.
I am sure nobody ever believed in whatever you say or do. You have been victimized by neighbours; friends; and even family members who were supposed to give you hope.

Celebrities / No International Brand Can Steal Tekno From Me - Ubi Franklin by magikmind: 6:02am On Apr 03, 2017
Ubi Franklin, as finally made his thoughts on Tekno signing with big brands known.

Fllowing the latter's new contract with Pepsi, Ubi told Sunday Scoop: “I read the contract properly. It took me about seven weeks to go through the contract with my lawyers internationally and locally. I had to expunge some things and also include some clauses. There is nothing to worry about. In music business, there are times when you would never be happy and there are times when you would be happy so you have to mix and manage both. Tekno’s rise is simply as a result of hard work, prayers and perseverance. Some people pray and they don’t work hard but if you pray and work hard, it will happen for you.” Franklin also talked about former business partner, Iyanya, making it known they are not at war.
-

In his words: “I didn’t split from Iyanya. Maybe you should ask him what happened between us. Once a contract is over, you can go if you want to nobody will prevent you from doing so. There is no bad blood between Iyanya and I he is my brother for life.” The record label boss also hinted that he has plans to diversify into the movie industry. “I am actually doing a lot of TV and movie productions right now. They wouldn’t necessarily feature my wife though it depends on who fits the role. Meanwhile, I just signed three new artistes and I would be unveiling them soon,” he said. -

Ubi, who has been in the news for a while now, was dumped by his wife of barely one year following rumors of domestic violence and infidelity.
