The joint union of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Delta State-owned polytechnics, yesterday embarked on indefinite strike following the state government’s indiscreet disposition to the plight of the staff of the respective polytechnics.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Ozoro and signed by the Joint Union Chairman, Thomas Ojuye, the unions lamented the failure of the state government to begin “full implementation of the new revised scheme of services for polytechnics and other similar tertiary institution in the country, stoppage of promotion from CONTISS 11 to 13, non-implementation of migration of technologists, executive and technical officers, instructors and confidential secretaries cadre on CONTISS 12 and above.”

Others are “migration of CONTISS 11 and below, stoppage of payment of promotion arrears, withdrawal of 65 years retirement policy, dismissal of chairmen of ASUP and NASU in Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi- Uku and the recent law on the acquisition of PhD certificates as prerequisites for promotion to the post of Chief Lecturer.”

The statement further added that; “In the light of the above lingering issues since 2014 and the state government indiscreet disposition to the plight of the staff of the respective polytechnics, the union hereby issue a notice of indefinite strike action, which will commence on May 30, 2017.” The Joint Chairman, Thomas Ojuye, also warned that any lecturer who failed to adhere to the above instruction from the unions will be severely dealt with just as he noted that a monitoring committee had been set up in the three polytechnics in the state for effective compliance with the strike action.
