Everybody knows the wedding business is big business in Nigeria. The barriers to entry are reasonably low and with enough skill and devotion to your craft you can easily rise to the top. Better still, there is room for everybody to participate, from catering to photography, mcing and djing, even making beads. Infact, let's list them out in full. Typically, intended couples will require the following for their wedding: Wedding rings, caterers, music, jewelry, bridal wear, aso ebi/ aso oke, menswear, drinks, photographer/ videographer, mc, wedding iv printers, gifts/souvenirs, a venue, car/ transport, hotel accommodation, wedding planner, cake, make-up artist. I’m sure there are more but you get the point- There is plenty room for everybody. Now, most of us won’t be naturally gifted at first but that shouldn’t deter you. But there are a couple of things you will have to do to be successful. 1. Learn a skill - If you want to be a caterer, then you must obviously learn how to cook. Practice, practice, practice. There are tons of cooking tutorials on YouTube. Watch them! Learn what meals are typically served at weddings and master them. Your product/service should be able to sell itself. An excellent caterer can take home as much as 3,000-5,000 Naira per head 2. Invest - You must be willing to invest, financially, into your business. After all, what good is a photographer without a camera? I cannot stress this enough, always consider getting a good quality camera. It might seem like a good idea to get a cheap one at first but trust me! Cheap often fails when you need it the most. Save up some money or ask friends and family to support you. A good photographer can make anywhere between 300 - 500k per wedding. 3. Choose a name – It’s important that you have a brand name, whether it’s your actual name or something unique. Either way, having a name is important. When you have decided on one, make sure you register it with CAC. Some clients might be uncomfortable paying directly into your bank account, and the only way for you to get a corporate account is by registering your company with CAC. Luckily these days, it’s much easier to do that online. Visit the CAC website to get started. Registering your business isn’t a must but it will definitely make you look more professional, you can always defer it till you are more established. Doing it yourself will set you back about 10-15k 4. Marketing - So now you’ve mastered your craft and you’ve acquired the necessary tools but you still have to get customers. This is the most difficult part of starting a business. These days, having an online presence is a must and the most obvious way to market your business is on Instagram, but unfortunately it’s saturated. Too many people offering the same or even better services than you. Moreover, you just started your business so it is highly unlikely you will have much to say or show on Instagram. So what are your options? You can register your business a site like Wedding Direct NG www.weddingdirect.ng . The site is packed with features to help you get booked and best of all its absolutely free which is exactly what you want if you’re just starting out. Sign up, edit/complete your profile and get booked. It’s that easy. No charges, no complications. 5. Research your customer – Nigeria is one of the most diverse countries on the planet. Researching the local customs and traditions of your client will make you stand out. 6. Get involved with the community – Vendors help out other vendors, this happens all the time. Start by letting them know you like their work, give them a shout out, like or leave a comment on Instagram, twitter or Facebook. Don’t start with the big vendors, they are often too busy and probably get too many shout outs to notice. Start with upcoming vendors like yourself, they are far more responsive and are often willing to do the same for you. One of your goals on social media should be to get featured on a bigger page than yours. Accounts like BellaNaijaWeddings have over 2 million followers so, they’re kind of a big deal. Being featured on such accounts can do wonders for your business. 7. Be prepared to Travel – I think that explains itself. 8. Be organized – Nothing says unprofessional like being disorganized. Get a diary, or a notepad. Alternatively, Wedding Direct NG provides an admin area where you can see and manage all your bookings in one place. This will help you a lot as your business grows. 9. Be Creative- There are a lot of people in this business, so how do you stand out. Find a niche, what do you offer that the others don’t. Don’t be afraid to be creative. There are more ways to do what you do than you think. Introducing new elements to what you are currently doing will give you the much need exposure that you need. 10. Be resilient – It will be hard at first. And there definitely will be times where you feel like giving up, clients will frustrate you, you will go weeks or even months without getting any work, your tools will get damaged, and yes some of your friends and relatives will even yab you. Just remember the ones who have made it today went through the same exact thing you will go through. Keep pushing, keep challenging yourself, keep reaching out and finding new ways or platforms to get your business noticed. There’s no magic to being successful, it takes hard work and it is unavoidable. Believe in yourself or no one else will. Please share with your friends. Did I miss anything? Please feel free to make additions below. Also we’d like to hear your stories of how you started- tips and funny stories. |

How to make it in the Entertainment Industry So you’re talented! People have complimented you on your voice, producing, jokes etc. You’ve decided you want to be an entertainer. In a couple of months you’ll hit it big and start raking in money like Davido, Basketmouth and Don Jazzy. In fact, the industry doesn’t know what’s about to hit them, let me get a record deal, a year gone no record deal, two years still nothing, you can’t believe you’ve quit school for this rubbish. The entertainment industry is the most ruthless, unforgiving, cutthroat industry out there. Cracking it takes time, money, the right people around you and a sprinkle of luck. That aside, you can learn from the mistakes of others and save unnecessary time doing unnecessary things Step 1 I’ll assume that you are actually talented and not like those people on Talent shows who embarrass themselves on national TV. With that said, record your talent, there’s no excuse if you don’t have a phone that records, find one. If you’re funny record it, if you can sing record it (you can do a rendition of someone else’ song or perform one of yours), if you’re a producer record a beat/sample. The reason for having a digital copy of your performance explains itself. Digital files are far easier to share than actually going from office to office performing. Post it online, forget putting it on Linda Ikeji for now. Post it on YouTube, SoundCloud, Instagram, Twitter or any other free video/audio platform. As a performer you need as much exposure as you can possibly get, make social media work for you. Step 2 You’ve posted it online and you’re getting views, likes, retweets etc. but it’s not translating into the Holy Grail; BOOKINGS. There are a couple of solutions to this. You can get yourself a manager, it’ll be his job to shop you around to event hosts, find you a record label, find you a video director, stylist etc. Finding a manager can be tricky at the best of times, there’s always the temptation to go with the people you know i.e. childhood friends, relatives etc. This often ends up being unwise. Issues of incompetency, trust, mismanagement quickly arise and just like that your career has gone down the drain. An alternative is to go with a talent agent or talent management company. For example, www.booktalent.com.ng As a new artist they’ll help you get bookings, find music video directors, get you a record deal, endorsements, sponsors etc. HOW DO I GET A TALENT AGENT? It depends. Every talent agent wants the next Wizkid or A.Y Makun. The truth is, the entertainment industry is very subjective. Therefore, before you get an agent, be certain that these things are in place: -Be talented. Don’t waste their time! -Put yourself out there. Twitter, Instagram, YouTube etc. -Be presentable. Nobody wants to tell you how to dress or how to look. Just don’t look like a clown. -Be ready to work. Work might be a show in Enugu or Borno, work might be endless interviews and taking pictures with fans. Saying no to work is the ultimate death nail. HOW MUCH WILL A TALENT AGENT COST? Again this depends on what you want. Talent agents don’t want to waste their time babysitting you. You need to know what you want. If you’re looking for a record deal, that’s what they’ll get you. If you want bookings, that’s what they’ll deliver. If you want your song played on Mtv that’s what they’ll do. Different services will have different costs. The best thing is to get in touch with them and find out yourself. DO A COLLABORATION Feature someone who’s more established than you are. This has worked time and time again for upcoming artistes. Remember how Davido featured Naeto C for his debut single “Back when”? That song launched Davido into the music industry. It’s a tested and tried formula and it works. Established artists are notorious for being selective about who they collaborate with. Getting them to feature with an unknown artist is almost impossible and that is where an agent comes in. companies like www.booktalent.com.ng can help you get more established artists to feature on your song. Get a popular artiste to feature on your song and watch your career grow. DO A MUSIC VIDEO This is important for music channels. More viewers, more exposure, you get the picture. Get a decent music director to direct your music video and get it on TV. Sounds easy right, well it’s not. First of all consider the director you’ll get for your music video. The more famous the director the more your song is likely to get played on music channels. Directors like Clarence Peters and Sesan don’t come cheap but they’re always worth it. www.booktalent.com.ng can help you book a director and get your music played on TV. BE HUMBLE Always be humble. A great example is 2face, with all his awards and all his accomplishments he still remains one of the most humble people in the industry. People want to work with him, people want to be around him. Humility goes a long way in helping your career. For more advice on the entertainment industry please click here www.talentagencyguide..com.ng I hope this has been helpful! Good luck out there |

If you’re lucky enough to be popular on social media then you’re part of and belong to members of a very exclusive club. The more popular you are the more exclusive the club. There are people all over the world using their social media popularity to rake in hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars annually. I mean being popular is great and everything but making money is even better. The strangest thing is a lot of these people don’t know the power they have at their finger-tips every-day. So how does it work, I think I’m popular how do I start making money? First of all, we need to quantify how popular you are and the easiest way to do this is by how many followers you have. Anything above 10,000 followers on Instagram or twitter is a good benchmark to consider you popular. If you are considering making any money from social media that should be your target. Now the conventional way of making money with social media is to wait and see if any company would like you to promote their brand with you for a fee. But this is unlikely going to happen to you because companies are too busy fighting over the social media kings and queens. You know those guys, those ones that earn insane amounts of money for a tweet or a picture about a company. The truth is every single brand/company needs advertising regardless of their size and budget and that is where you come in. But how will I get people to pay me a fee for ads. The truth is you can’t. That’s why you have companies like www.booktalent.com.ng. They look for local and international companies and brands who would like to work with you. You can check out their requirements here: http://www.booktalent.com.ng/requirements.pdf. Send them an email if you meet the requirements. Once you sign up just sit back, relax and wait the money to start coming in. It’s that simple! Is it a full-time job? This is totally up to you. www.booktalent.com.ng spends their time looking for companies for you so can spend more time growing your followers, which in turn means more money for you. There are people out there who have turned it into a full-time job and are making millions of dollars from it. What are the rates like? www.booktalent.com.ng have a rating system they use in charging brands for advertising, you can find it here www.booktalent.com.ng/rates.pdf. Companies are charging per follower the person has. i.e. booktalent Nigeria charges N3.50k per follower, if you have 50,000 followers on Instagram and the company wants a picture of their product with a comment stating how much you love the brand they’ll pay 3.50 x 50,000 = N175,000. You will admit that that’s a tidy sum for just a picture and a comment. I hope this has been helpful. Goodluck out there! |
Booking an artist in Nigeria is not as straight forward as one might think. There are a couple ways to achieve this. But first there are a couple of things you will need to confirm. 1. Is if the artist/act/performer will be available on the day you want him/her for your event or show. This is pretty straight-forward but also can be tremendously annoying. Most of the acts you might want will be booked on the date you want them, especially during festive periods. Having to contact virtually every act only to find out they aren't available can be truly heartbreaking. 2. You will need to inform the artist of the venue of the location which you want him or her perform. Again, this is pretty straight. 3. Thirdly, artists need to know what kind of function they will be performing at i.e wedding, birthday, anniversary, book launch etc. Some artists are very particular about the events they perform at. 4. This is probably the most important part, THE PRICE! As you well know, different artists charge different prices. For A-listers like Davido, Wizkid, Mavin, Psquare etc be well prepared to pay anywhere between 5-10million for their performance. This most likely be exclusive of their travel, feeding and accomodation costs, which you will cater for for any performance outside their state of residence. 5. After an agreement has been reached, bear in mind that some agreements will require signed contracts, some artists will want require that you pay them to confirm the date you want. Some artists will ask for a deposit i.e. 50% before and 50% after performance. In the case of the option, in the case of the first agreement it leaves the client exposed. Some artist for one reason or the other might fail to turn up, illness or due to some unforeseen circumstances. Also the artist might appear but fail to perform satisfactorily, in which asking for your money back might prove difficult. Fortunately, these cases are increasingly rare these days. HOW TO CONTACT AN ARTISTE First things first, you will never get the chance to speak to the artists until payment has been made. The people you do speak to are the buffers, the artists management team. Sorry to burst your bubble but that's how it works. A better way of contacting or booking an artist is through talent agents. They do all the work for you so you don't have to. Just give them the information they need and thats it. Sites like www.booktalent.com.ng are excellent at this, they'll confirm the artist/acts for you within 24hrs and are very prefessional. They also offer 'fee protection' i.e. They hold your money for you till the artists perform their duties as agreed, only then are the artists paid. I hope this has been helpful, goodluck! |
Social Media is the best thing that has happened to marketing since television. Today virtually everyone on the planet is on social media:Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram all great tools for marketing your brand, product or service. So to the question, How can I increase brand awareness using social media. The first thing you should do is set up an account, set up an account on as many social media platforms as you can. This does two things, first off all it allows you claim your brand name. Nothing is more annoying than trying to open an account and finding out someone already has the name of your brand. Two, it gives you a social platform on which you can operate. Most brands have one and it would be downright weird for you not to. Great you've signed up, registered, you're in the game but no one knows your brand, no one knows your company. Lets be honest by know you've probably told all your friends about your brand by now, and some have been kind enough to tell their friends. If you haven't done this by now then, in fact don't bother reading this blog. If you have then good for you, but you're here to find out how to inform people who don't know about your brand. How do you do this on social media you wonder...the answer is to find yourself social media influencer (social media personality). What the hell is a social media influencer. Sounds like gibberish I hear you say. Well it's not. There are lots of people with lots of followers online. Why not use them to create an awareness about your brand? Let me walk you through it. How can I contact them? You don't have to, companies like www.booktalent.com.ng will do that for you. They will also find an influencer(social media personality) that matches what you're trying to promote with the right target audience. How much do they charge? This depends, www.booktalent.com.ng charges per follower, friend or subscriber. You give them a budget and they'll find you an influencer(social media personality). You can check out their rates here http://www.booktalent.com.ng/rates.pdf Social media personality vs convential methods Influencers usually have more devoted followers than convential methods. Their followers latch on to the things they say, wear, use and are therefore more like to buy into and share this information. Take for example an influencer shares his "totally awesome experience with his car insurance company", the impact that will have on his followers will be far more than the experience an average person will get watching a random advert on tv about car insurance and about someone they have no care in the world for. Theres no attachment or connection to that advert. Using influencers bridges that gap. Its trackable Using social media persoalities will help you track how your ad is actually developing. You monitor likes, retweets, shares, etc. Information is key and it always helps to know where you stand. The possibilities are truly endless with social media, goodluck out there |
