The Ebonyi State Government has said its target is to host international sports competitions when the renovation of the Abakaliki Stadium is completed, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Governor David Umahi said this at the closing of the its All Primary Schools Sports Jamboree, at the stadium on Wednesday.

Umahi, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. John Eke, said installing world-class facilities at the stadium would make it conducive to the hosting of international events.

“It will also ensure that the facilities are adequately utilised and assist in effectively harnessing the skills of the pupils discovered during the three-day jamboree,’’ he said.

“The governor directed the ministries of education and youths and sports to ensure that the pupils combine sports with their academics.

“We have seen that the pupils are greatly talented and we will do everything within our powers to ensure that they achieve their sports and educational ambitions.’’

Chief Hycinth Ikpor, Chairman of the State Universal Education Board, which organised the competition, said no fewer than 150 pupils from the three senatorial zones competed in several events.

NAN reports that Ebonyi Central emerged as the overall winners of the competition with nine gold, eight silver and seven bronze.

Ebonyi North came second with seven gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals, while Ebonyi South placed third with seven gold, five silver and five bronze.
