bravolad: A genuine seller wiki be more than willing to post engine pictures with asking price & serious negotiation holding outside the forum.
The pictures will allow those who have similar cars or competent mechanics to confirm engine and model. It will market him and his goods, lifting him above others. Pple out there with similar problem ll hv a place to go. I knw one such person with 750li whose engine is faulty too. |

USAutoBuy: I did not know the OP from anywhere nor did i cause this problem. Either way it goes, it matters less to me. I am a car dealer and have been for a while, my job is to give my opinion and he can chose on his own. I AM STILL A BUSINESS, THIS IS NOT RED CROSS. Wouldn't it be more crazy if i say i am doing this for free?
When NEPA take light, did the petrol station give you diesel for free? Nail puncture your tire and tire shop fix for free?.
Someone caused this problem and it will cost the owner either way. Sell vehicle AS-IS or repair. Nobody will buy like run/drive car and just minus the cost of the engine. And to get the engine, its not cheap.
That is why i was hoping that the engine matches older model years. If he can solve his problem by spending $2 why make him spend $5?
Numbers are as objective as they come, I quoted $5k (ALL INCLUSIVE) and the closest one is about $4,200 without shipping. He can compare with any other one he has gotten so far and compare. So what is my offense?
He is free to chose whatever he wants to do with his car but i take offense when i see people trying to make him sell to them at a price which you cannot even get a pencil camry! Correct. We hv neva had cause 2 interact outside this forum about the car AS IS or its engine. However, ur opinion n suggestions were invaluable to me! It shaped the course of my decision 2day. I am bearing d brunt of someone's negligence. I can't kill n drink his pepper soul! Like I said in earlier posts, I shall keep the car for a couple of weeks while I source n search for the engine that matches d one in d car. There's no point being agitated over someone's opinion. |
Car Talk › Re: Bmw Engines by mandmis007(op): 2:19am On Sep 19, 2016 |
bravolad: actually difficult to suggest an exact solution. My earlier comment was mere postulations. Of course, you have to assume certain conditions especially when they are outside your immediate control. The economy will definitely improve; the question is when? I am an optimistic person but then you have to assume some hypothesis.
Given the current scenario, it would be better you do a bit of research to determine the current market value of the car, then you can borrow money to fix it and sell afterwards. Keeping that car will most likely depreciate it's value over time.
I don't think it makes sense to keep/store such a car indefinitely. Again, if you are certain of getting money to fix it in about one year, then, it's fine. Otherwise, you may have to sell it as scrap when at that time you decide to sell.
Remember, storing it will lead to gradual degrading of the paint work, interior including leather seats owing to heat.
To sum up, the burden of choice and decision is upon you & only you.
Which course of action you take, please update us. The solution can't b like math that u arrive @ a correct figure. This involves forecasting n making best alternative choices. Being an optimist like myself I hv d belief d economy will pick up soon. Since its out of our control, d timing is subjective. It's foolhardy if I think I keep/store it n it remain fresh. Certainly it's value goes down. The onus of decision is left squarely on my table. It's pointless selling it as scrap after finally 'killing it' by keeping it for too long! I hv resolved to source 4 quids 2 get a replacement engine in a couple of weeks from now. I Can't keep it for 1 yr sef. |

kingreign: I've been following this case from the first day OP posted it and observed and analysed each comment.
You seem way tooo interested in the OP's case way too much for comfort. Tell me, what do you stand to gain? Some cash? Fame? Wanna cash in on his misadventure or what?
Your extreme concern in OP's case isn't one anyone should ignore. Well, you know what's on your mind, the reason for the sudden great care and concern which if I were in the OP's shoes wold find a bit too uncomfortable (well OP may not observe it cos he's at the moment desperate). Desperate may not be the right word here rather concerned. I have a 2008 civic and a 2010 camry I go around with anytime I am in town. |

bravolad: I have deliberately avoided commenting on this thread but the advise to store the car provoked some thoughts in me as I read.
I will make some postulations; what if the current economic situation in Nigeria does not improve in the next couple of years? From statistics point of view, it takes an average of 18 months or more to come out of recession. More so, the current APC led government has no viable economic plan to steer us out of the current situation with their continued blame on the previous administration. The economic realities is likely to worsen.
It's common knowledge that cars loose value over time especially when care is lacking. The rate of depreciation will be higher for the car. If you decide after a couple of years to sale, what do you think will be the value of the car at that time?
Considering that if you sell AS IS, at the current offer, you will be loosing a significant amount of money to the real value of the car.
It's also obvious that you did not insure the car. Such exquisite and luxury car ought to be insured for situations like this. I prefer to look @ the bright side of things, the positives! What if the economic situation dramatically begin to show signs of improvement/ recovery? I know cars tend to develop some other problems if kept without usage. What one do? It's insured but not against situation like this, obviously negligence can be seen here. What then can u advise? To sell or keep? U didn't come clear. |
Car Talk › Re: Bmw Engines by mandmis007(op): 5:44am On Sep 18, 2016 |
Homguy: I would advise you not to sell as is for the following reasons 1. That car is one car not just anybody can afford, who ever is offering to buy AS IS" sees the value he's getting at even 1M or 800k...you are throwing away that much more value too.
2. I dont know the sort of job you do right now, but going by the nigerian economic trends you definitely might not be getting anything like this vehicle again. It would be worth alot more in the near future.
3. If you sell AS IS" for say 800k or 1M. The buyer might spend 2.9M- 3M or less to get it running While my price research has shown most used 760Lis to be around 8-12M. So that buyer would still make a really decent profit reselling.
4. I believe if you search enough you will get a decent price for that engine, and those quoted so far especially that by sultaan seem like a good deal.
Bro, except you were planning to sell this vehicle before this incident, i would advise you be patient, repair it, use it for a while and sell it off at your own terms instead of selling under duress. That way u can still enjoy the ride for a while, and not throw away that much value. It was deliberate that I didn't reply to ur post/advise cuz I find it interesting and incisive and needed to be digested with rapt attention. U captured my mood succinctly as if I hv discussed with one on one. I am into consultancy n contracts. I was offered 800k for AS IS but wasn't convinced. Never dreamt of selling the ride b4 d incident. Tot initially I wld get d engine locally in naija but became disillusioned when it's obvious I wldnt. I ll heed 2 ur advise N keep cool while I pray 4 beta days 2 come. I love the ride die! Thank you very much indeed. I am better illuminated now. |

nurey: There was no need for this bashing or doubting, you can ask the op if I had called him privately to sell the car to me or my family member. I won't gain anything from the car as I don't even know how much it's sold and neither do I value properties for people (agent)
If you look at the time I posted the comment, it's just 15minutes in between it was more of a private chat response to each other, I didn't see the comment before I replied to his comment about disposing it to sultan if he was in Nigeria I browse NL 99% ON mobile phone using opera mini. Don't be offended by the last post. I hv gained from not only ur advise but 4rom others too on what I shld do with my car. I hv neva received calls or message privately 4rm u about the car. So don't be bothered. Homguy probably may hv missed some part of the conversation 2 understand it completely. |

nurey: If selling as scrap, that is dismantling and selling in pieces you can rake in more but you must have a mechanic or parts seller as a family member.
But it's only you can decide your best option nobody can force you, we can only give you opinion.
Its possible to see someone who will value the car and pay such amount for it. But with the situation in Nigeria now, even I won't take a risk of buying a luxury on wheels without engine, my brother 2.8m isn't chicken change besides a 1990s Lexus LS and Acura legend /RL is twice as expensive as a BMW 5series with TV of same generation year Nigerian used.
This luxurious German machine loss value faster than you can say jack robbinson Neither is in the family. A lot of the advise I got encouraged keeping it safe 4 now and watch what will happen to the economy. Think I ll go with the majority. |

I still maintain my stand store the car or do a valuation to dispose as is Are u kidding me? The civic been used less than 2 yrs!in top perfect condition & shape, not a single scratch!? Geez, less than a million? Selling the bm AS IS can it go for 800 k? Realistically. |

sultaan: There is one on eBay for $4200 free shipping the seller has good review and you can arrange to ship it to a Nigerian shipper ( most are out of business now) or to a friend's house but you might need to find out how much delta or ups will charge to fly it in.
Shipping by sea on container will take about 2 months the shipper will have to wait for his container to fill up.
I showed you a source gave you a way to get it in but you are looking for an easy way out and that might be not as easy.If inspired is still into cars he might charger you to bring it is with his deliveries We all want to achieve great result using cost effective methods/ strategies. Not as u are putting it, as if I am waiting for a brand new engine for free. Of course certain parameters will have 2 be in place before I fork out such sums for the engine, or else my business is affected. I have a 2008 Honda Civic bought from Honda's place in 2013 and I am thinking of disposing it to raise small cash. |

sultaan: I am really surprise that you are really thinking of scrapping as is!
If you can afford to buy a 760Li and can't afford to replace an engine, $5k isn't really a problem to those who drive that type of car; its just the price of an old Corolla so would you rather buy a Corolla or put another engine in that BMW
Timaya just crashed his Bentley I am sure it will be scrapped, and so will a lot of people driving high end cars on Nigerian roads without proper know how. It's not the cost that's my problem but the fact that it's taking 2 long 2 identify 1, n whether the engine and other instruments will work perfectly. To cut ur loses I think one has to gamble, take the risk. @ N430=$1 it translates to roughly between N2.1m to N3m for a replacement engine of between $5000 to $7000. Can't go lower than this!
