I went to an palm tree plantation last year in Ondo state and I discovered that provision wasn't made for road within the plantion. When palnting ur palm trees make sure u do a proper mapping out the entire farm layout. Access roads shoud provided inside the farm plantation in such a way the truck(vehicle) can move inside the farm as this will greatly help during harvesting.
Also collection centre shud be provided for within the farm where all fruits harvested will be collected and processed (some mills are situated in the collection centre)
Again, access to water within ur farm shud be put into consideration. Borehole can be provided for and for guys that can't afford drilling of borehole like me can sight there farm close to a river or stream.
A map shud also be created of the entire farmland.
Secretatriate or office complex. Yes, this very important. A land at the entrance of the farm shud be left for future use to erect an house complex where all adminstractive functions will be carried out.
U can add urs if I miss out anything

There's no definite time or spacing. I will advice u plant ur w melon afta 3-6months because by then the palm wil be strong enough to resist any competition for nutrients from other plants. Spacing should be consider when planting the w. Melon so that the wings or hands of the melon won't tangle with young palm tree. The Palm tree grows upward while the melon just spread around on the ground

I planted the palms in may and am planting the water melon in September to be harvested in December. The water melon is planted so as to prevent weed growing and it add more nutrient to the soil. Little spacing should be considered when planting the water melon.

loneytunes: Sir, please what is the time line between planting the seedlings and planting the water melon? Also is there any spacing to be noted when planting the water melon so that it will not have any negative effect on the palm trees.

Gwoza People Threaten to Relocate to Cameroon.

Some internally displaced persons from captured Gwoza town protested yesterday in Maiduguri, and threatened to relocate to Cameroon should the Nigerian government fail to secure their homeland and rehabilitate them.

The protesters, numbering about a thousand persons, alleged that both the federal and Borno state governments have abandoned them, leaving them at the mercy of the Boko Haram insurgents who kill them at will.

Some of the protesters carried placards with inscriptions as "We are leaving for Cameroon", "Nigeria does not care for us", and "We are killed, our houses burnt and left to suffer like orphans", among others.

Some soldiers and armed police officers tried to prevent the placard-carrying protesters from embarking on the rally and one of them was allegedly shot at by a trigger-happy policeman.

The man, who is said to be 26 years old, is said to be in critical condition at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Despite all attempts by the security officers to stop the rally, the protesters forced their way into the Borno State Government House, Maiduguri where they lodged their complaint to the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Zannah Mustapha.

They initially protested the appointment of the deputy governor to address them instead of the governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima. The protesters shouted that: "We voted for the governor and not his deputy," and "why must we not be addressed by him at this time on our loss?"

They alleged that recent actions by the governor showed that he cared less about their plight. "They've burned down the entire Gwoza; Emir's palace, local government secretariat, police station, and no one seems to care. Most people are on top of the Mandara mountains of Gwoza. They are starving," they decried.

While in the deputy governor's office, one of the protesters, who identified himself as Liman Ngoshe, addressing journalists said those trapped on the mountains are forced to feed on fruits and drink rain water. Meanwhile the Borno State Police Command, in a statement, banned all manner of protest and rally.

The statement written by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Gideon Jubrin, read: "It has come to the notice of Borno State Police Command that some group of persons are intending to embark on demonstrations anchored on the current security situation in the state. Members of the general public are being reminded that they are under obligation to obey the state of emergency imposed.

"All law abiding citizens are therefore assured and guaranteed of protection while they go about their lawful businesses. Such intending demonstrations are capable of causing disharmony, anarchy and pandemonium. "The command is advising such persons or group of persons to desist from such act in their own interest or face the wrath of the law. The public are hereby advised to remain calm and report any misconduct to security agencies".

The ban, according to military and police sources, followed the attempted demonstrations of Gwoza women to the Government House, Maiduguri over last Wednesday's Gwoza attacks and killings by suspected Boko Haram gunmen.
