I planted watermelon 2yrs ago on abt 5 hectare somewhere in Nasarawa state and the yield was high and no insecticide or pesticide was applied. Maybe the insects attack in certain region of Nigeria. I will visit an agro shop to find out more and what pesticide to use and possibly share photos with the house judemorfy: ♈̷̴̩ε̲̣̣̣̥α,yu shud. insects already Sstarted eating up mine until ℓ̊ sprayed insecticide |

Thank u Vanpascorce, I heard abt mixing the seeds with siliva won't make it germinate. Is there a proven theory to it or is just a myth? Howere, I got my last seeds from a rotten watermelon. Here is the pic Vanpascore: Weldone OP, I love this thread and i say kudos to you. In addition pls, those of you asking for where to get d seed, u can buy a big water melon, cut into two and keep it somewhere for 3-4 days to ferment, get the seed there, wash with water to separate the seed from d decayed rubbish and sun dry as directed by the OP
DO NOT PLANT THE SEED THAT HAS MIXED WITH SALIVA, IT WILL NOT GROW.

U can plant 2-3 seeds per hole and since ur are in the south u can just plant without ridges but weed b4 planting. Pics of fresh seeds to be sun dried candy: @Mangam, thanks for sharing. I live in Ibadan and I'll like to plant in my garden just for family consumption. I've read through your posts and you've answered most of my questions. However, I still have 1 or 2:
How many seeds do I put in one planting hole?
I have bought 3 large sized water melons and I'm planning to sun-dry the seed for 3 days like you said. You said it doesn't like too much water;can i still plant now despite the rain?
I don't really know how to make ridges, my husband is a busy bee and my garden is too small to engage the service of a labourer. Do I need to make ridges or can I just dig and plant(land is fertle)?
Can I just weed manually instead of using herbicide?
Thanks.

Distance shouldn't be more than 2 feet and u apply herbicides so as to kill the weeds. Watermelon don't like much water and this is the reason its planted early and ending of the raining reason Op, please kindly answer these questions. Especially spacing and watering. chidyhels: Op. Thank you for sharing. Pls what is the distance btw one planted seed and another. Again, must i use herbicide.? Why can't i water and not wait for rain. Am only planting for fun,not commercial purpose. |

Sorry for ur lost, Infomizer: Interesting thread Mangam, Had a lil experience farming kankana (what the Hausas call it) in Bunkure, Kano early this year. The harvest was poor and I can't really point fingers as I was barely around and left it with some mallos to manage. I also failed to carry out serious feasibility studies as I just got carried away by the fact that almost every TomDicknHarry was planting it there, so I didn't envisage much problems. Fast forward 3 months later and almost a 100k gone (yea! see milking), all I had as harvest were not commiserate with expectations. Apart from the fact that the intense sun affected some (the mallos didn't want to harvest in my absence and I was too damn busy in Lag, they said the harvest was poor generally (I can partly attest to this as their Cucumber and Tomato yields in the part of the village I got were also poor). I'll attach pictures later sha. It was a real learning curve then, though I later came to realise that it is planted down south too. I intend doing it again sha but I don't have the time these days and relying on someone else (which I have to) is quite limiting too. I.might keep you guys posted then. Nice one Mangam.
TL;DR Been there, done that (with no supervision from me coz I left it in the hands of others). It was crazy, expensive, and not as fulfilling as expected. My bad though. |
