One of Ghana’s foremost authors, Professor Kofi Awoonor, was among scores of people shot dead in yesterday’s terrorist attack at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. One of Africa’s most extraordinary poets, Mr. Awoonor also served in several political roles in Ghana. Until recently, he was the chairman of Ghana’s Council of State. He was appointed to the Council of State by the late President John Atta-Mills and in 2009 was elected to chair that advisory body.
A source at the Ghana High Commission in Nairobi confirmed Mr. Awoonor’s death in the massacre of innocents in Nairobi that has sent shock waves around the world. A Somali Islamist militant group, Al Shabab, has claimed responsibility for the gruesome attack in which 59 people perished. Many more victims sustained various degrees of critical injuries.
Our source said Mr. Awoonor’s son who was with him at the mall also sustained injuries but is currently responding to treatment.
A source at Legon told SaharaReporters that Mr. Awoonor’s death “has put Ghanaians in a big mourning mood. He was a very beloved man, an honorable writer who believed in lifting up all Ghanaians.”
At various times, Mr. Awoonor, who was inspired by his country’s most well known nationalist figure, Kwame Nkrumah, also served as Ghana’s ambassador to Cuba, Brazil. From 1990 to 1994, he served as Ghana’s ambassador and permanent representative at the United Nations in New York City, heading the world body’s committee against apartheid.   
Mr. Awoonor was born on March 13, 1935, educated in Ghana, the University of London, and the United States. A polyglot and renaissance man, he spoke English, Spanish, French and Portuguese in addition to several Ghanaian languages. Mr. Awoonor held several positions including Head of the Ghana Film Corporation. He taught at universities in the US, the University of Ghana in Legon, and the University of the Cape Coast where he was head of the Department of English.
Mr. Awoonor was a gifted writer and passionate promoter of African literature through his critical scholarship. His book of criticism, The Breast of the Earth, is widely regarded as an important foundational text in the appreciation of the links between the oral tradition in Africa and the continent’s modern literary traditions.
In addition to several collections of poetry, Mr. Awoonor also authored the highly experimental novel, This Earth, My Brother…His second novel, Comes the Voyager at Last, though not as well known as his first, is regarded by some scholars as an important pioneering fictive work linking Africa and its New World Diaspora.
As a celebrated author, poet, playwright and educator, Mr. Awoonor was known for the range of references in his literary work. His poetry reflected a deeply Afrocentric perspective rooted in his Ewe cultural identity and integrated with contemporary religious symbolism and Western literary devices. His works, especially his poetry, were once widely studied at by students taking their General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations in English-speaking West African countries.
Our source said he was not aware whether Mr. Awoonor was on an official mission in Kenya. The government of Ghana has issued a statement describing his death as tragic. Ghanaian President John Mahama also sent a message of condolence to the Awoonor family in which he assured them of his government’s determination to get to the bottom of the matter.

SaharaReporters can authoritatively confirm that the eight persons shot and killed by Nigerian security agents in Abuja today were in no way linked to the dreaded Boko Haram sect as claimed by the spokesperson of the Nigerian secret police, Marilyn Ogar.
The scene of the massacre was an uncompleted building at Bamanga Tukur Street in the Apo Legislative Quarters.
Seventeen of those who survived the pre-dawn onslaught by uniformed men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) spoke to us on their hospital beds in Abuja, all of them vehemently denying being members of Boko Haram.
One of the survivors said they are day labourers who work in the city to make ends meet, and later squat in uncompleted buildings by paying the guards attached to those buildings.  This morning, he said, they were woken up by a surprising hail of bullets from the uniformed soldiers. 
Providing some background, he disclosed that an emissary of an army general had given them a five-day quit notice but that today’s slaughter was carried out before they could move from the building.
SaharaReporters saw sleeping mats and cooking utensils belonging to the squatters as well as blood splattered on the walls of the building from the unusual attack on innocent civilians by the Nigerian military claiming to be fighting Boko Haram.
Nigerian security agents insist that they killed the civilians after they first came under attack while trying to dig out weapons hidden underground by the insurgents, but one of the injured squatters told SaharaReporters categorically that the soldiers fled the scene after finding out they had killed innocent civilians.

Local environmental officials, on Thursday, confirmed that one hundred and forty nine civilians were killed while over 200 houses were burnt in Benishiek town of Kaga Local Government Area, following the Tuesday attack by Boko Haram members.

Alhaji Bunu Kaigama Chairman of Kaga Local Government council had informed Governor Kashim Shettima that “14 people lost their lives within the town from the attack by Boko Haram members and that several others were killed along the road to Maiduguri and Damaturu.”

Local environmental officials, who continued to pick corpses since the attack on Tuesday from bushes and road sides said they counted 143 dead bodies so far and called the situation a “massacre.”

It was reported on Wednesday that 54 persons died in the attacked staged on Kano-Maiduguri highway and the nearby village of Benisheik where hundreds of homes were also burnt.

But officials of the state environmental protection agency who moved along the road sides of the highway to evacuate corpses of civilians shot by bullets from Boko Haram gunmen, said there were more deaths.

Governor Kashim Shettima had gone on a sympathy visit to asses the extent of damage inflicted on the town.

Addressing the people, the governor said, “please don’t leave your town inspite of the trauma from the unfortunate incident.

“Government is going to rebuild all the houses destroyed by the attackers and as soon as I leave here, I will constitute a five man committee which will be given 50 million naira to come and commence work immediately,” the governor said.

FG To Ban Vehicle Importation.
As unrealistic as it sounds, the federal government has dropped hints that it may ban vehicle importation in the near future even as the revival of the nation’s moribund vehicle assembly plants hangs in the balance.

The move, the government said, was to encourage “local production” of vehicles in the country.

President Goodluck Jonathan, spoke of the impending vehicle import ban recently in Uyo, when he declared open the 2013 yearly national management conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM).

Without giving the exact time for the ban or the specific kinds of vehicles to be banned, he stressed that the efforts being made, especially in local vehicle production at Nnewi, Anambra State, needed to be encouraged.

The president, who was represented by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Aji, said the federal government had stepped up moves to reposition the nation’s transportation system, in line with its transformation agenda.

“The government recently directed its various organs to purchase vehicles made at the Nnewi plant, a gesture that was lauded by the Nigerian Automotive Manufacturers Association of Nigeria,”  he said.

He added that the reform in the rail, aviation and the maritime sectors were aimed at gaining the confidence of investors and to empower Nigerians.
