They have a terrible mindset of the coup. You can't really blame them, all what most of them know is the story told them by fathers and uncles, without picking up a book.

He was the highest ranking military officer at the time and the right person to take over. Even the Northern military officers knew that and had little or no qualms with his ascension to power. The problem was his decision not to deal with the proponents of the coup which bred suspicion and the unquenchable desire to revenge what they believed was an Igbo coup.

Where is the military book that you read that the most senior military person MUST take over power from Civilians in the event of a failed military coup. It is the same asswipe thinking that got Ironsi into that deep shytee .

That was the first time we had to deal with such a situation. So it was not easy. Everyone else learnt from that mistake. .

It was a treasonable act and the military had a straight forward way of dealing with such an issue. The punishment for a failed military putsch is summary execution. We should NEVER try to absolve Ironsi on such flimsy excuses of lack of precedent.
Another question is why did he relocate all the coup plotters to the secured East?

He quelled the uprising as the COAS, OBJ was no where in the theater of action, just like Ironsi he had the choice of taking over and he was actually pushed by the other officers to take over, but he allowed wise thinking to guide him.

Truth be told, Aguiyi Ironsi had the golden opportunity to do the right thing upon assuming leadership after the abortion of the so-called Igbo coup. But he failed to bring instant justice to those officers who brutally murdered notable Nigerians (while sparing those from a particular region of the country). This was the case against Ironsi. Perhaps the events which led up to the Civil War would have been averted and millions of lives saved.

No body have ever come out to explain the reason for Aguiyi not following military tradition of bringing instant justice to the coup plotters.

The aftermath of what transpired with the way power changed hand to Ironsi pointed to a pattern of Igbo elite complicity in the coup.

His inactions or action of securing the coup plotters in the east with foot dragging on the the punishment for them led many people to conclude that he was out to buy time and protect them.

Why did Danjuma not take over?

1. They tried to avoid what happened when Ironsi was killed that led to the war by refusing the next in rank, Brig Ogundipe to take over. Obj was next in rank and ought to take over. Having Obj in power then was really nothing to them, because he was an appendage of the north then.

2. Why was he not made second in command to Obj? He is a christian and from northern minority. They needed a muslim from the core north to pair Obj to placate the 'owners' of Nigeria that they have not totally lost power.

You either don't know Nigeria history or changed the narratives to try and absolve Ironsi of any act of omission.
The chief of army staff was no any other than TY Danjuma, he personally secured the seat of power while providing logistics and tactical manoeuvres for the infantry boys.
He insisted that OBJ and not him should take over while they hurriedly had to fetched out and promote Yar'adua to assuage the battered Hausa Fulanis.

Now an igbo coup was crushed by an igbo officer. No one talks about this.
