Gunmen stormed a market in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt on Monday, with claims that at least 10 people were killed, in the latest violence to hit the southern oil hub. The incident happened at about 4:00 am (0300 GMT) at a meat market in the Mgbosimiri area of the city. Most of the victims were market women, said one trader, Agnes Tarila. Agitators in the Niger Delta yesterday accused the President Muhammadu Buhari government of a lack of commitment to peace in the region. While urging Buhari to take practical steps to ensure sustainable peace in the oil-rich region, they warned against extending military operation to their area. In a statement, a coalition of Niger Delta groups described Buhari’s Independence Day broadcast as filled with empty promises on his resolve to engage the aggrieved people of region. Nigeria will begin trying Boko Haram suspects detained in military camps from next month and the cases will be speedily handled, the justice ministry said on Sunday.
