Have you always wondered how listening and dancing to your favourite song keeps you happy and going all day? Science has proved over and over again that good music soothes the body, soul and relieves stress. Music is said to be a universal language. It is known to unite cultures and nations. Researchers state that playing and listening to music has great benefits for both our mental and physical health. A review of 400 research papers in the Neurochemistry of Music found that music can improve the function of the body’s immune system, reduce pain and blood pressure in addition to relieving stress. The study proves that listening and singing along to a music is more successful and effective than prescription drugs in decreasing a person’s anxiety . The lead researcher, professor of medicine, James Levitin, says playing and listening to music reduced pain and anxiety levels in cancer patients. Levitin states, “We have found compelling evidence that musical interventions can play a health care role in settings ranging from operating rooms to family clinics. But even more importantly, we were able to document the neuro chemical mechanisms by which music has an effect in four domains: management of mood, stress, immunity and as an aid to social bonding.” He states that listening to music increases the production of the antibody, Immunoglobin A, which plays an important role in helping the body fight infections and diseases. “The body produces higher levels of these antibody, Immunoglobin A when you listen to music or sing a song from your heart. This antibody attacks germs and bacteria invading the body.” Listening to and playing music can also lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), according to Levitin and Dr. Mona Lisa Chanda, his postgraduate research fellow. Also, a research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry states that music therapy, when combined with standard care, is a successful treatment for depression. They add that it is not just cool music and jazz that is good for your health. According to them, fast-paced music supplies more adrenaline to the brain which is necessary for mental activities. They note that listening to thrilling and loud music gives similar health benefits that food and good sex gives. The report states, “Music gives more pleasure and it makes you anticipate, which is similar to the feeling you have during sex. When this happens, your system secrets more dopamine, the hormone that makes you happy and reduces pain and stress.” There is more to music, here are six interesting ways that it can help your health, Relieves back and muscle pain Experts say that music works on the autonomic nervous system – the part of the nervous system responsible for controlling our blood pressure, heartbeat and brain function – and also the limbic system – the part of the brain that controls feelings and emotions. According to a research published in Vienna Medical Weekly by Austrian doctors, when slow rhythms are played, our blood pressure and heartbeat slow down which helps us breathe more slowly, thus reducing muscle tension in our neck, shoulders, stomach and back. They add that apart from relieving physical tension, music also reduces psychological tension in the mind. Clinical psychologist Franz Wendtner, who led the study, says, ‘Music is an important part of our physical and emotional wellbeing – ever since we were babies in our mother’s womb listening to her heartbeat and breathing rhythms. “Listening to music for about 25 minutes every day for at least 10 days can help prevent back pain and also make you sleep better. Music can help migraine and chronic headache sufferers reduce the intensity, frequency, and duration of the headaches.” ‘The experts believe that any type of classical music that is calm and slow can help relieve muscle pain. Reduces blood pressure By playing recordings of relaxing music every morning and evening, people with high blood pressure can train themselves to lower their blood pressure – and keep it low. According to a research reported at the American Society of Hypertension meeting in New Orleans, listening to just 30 minutes of classical, Celtic or raga music every day may significantly reduce high blood pressure. Medicine for the heart Music is good for your heart. British researchers recruited young men and women, half of whom were trained musicians. The participants slipped on head phones and listened to six styles of music, including rap and classical pieces, with random two-minute pauses. As the participants kicked back and listened, the researchers monitored their breathing, heart rates and blood pressure. The participants had faster heart and breathing rates when they listened to lively music. When the musical slowed, so did their heart and breathing rates. During the musical pauses, heart and breathing rates normalised or reached more optimal levels. Whether or not a person liked the style of music did not matter. The tempo, or pace, of the music had the greatest effect on relaxation. Improves memory The power of music to affect memory is quite intriguing. Listening to sixty beats per minute activates the left and right brain. The simultaneous left and right brain action maximises learning and retention of information. The information being studied activates the left brain while the music activates the right brain. Also, activities which engage both sides of the brain at the same time, such as playing an instrument or singing, cause the brain to be more capable of processing information. |
Drinking milk has long been promoted as positive for building stronger bones. But it seems drinking milk as a teenager does not reduce the risk of hip fractures later in life and can even increase the risk for men, according to new research published in JAMA Pediatrics. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the US Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services recommend consuming three cups of milk a day or equivalent milk products as a good way of getting a dietary intake of nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is a chemical element that is known to build and maintain strong bones. Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, led by Diane Feskanich, say that drinking milk during adolescence is recommended in order to achieve optimum bone mass, and it is expected to help reduce the risk of hip fractures and osteoporosis later in life. However, they note that evidence of these associations has been unclear, and that higher milk consumption is known to contribute to height growth – a risk factor for hip fractures. With these points in mind, the investigators analyzed more than 96,000 men and women from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study in order to determine whether teenage milk consumption has any effect on hip fractures later in life. Participants from the Nurses’ Health Study reported their milk consumption as teenagers in 1986, while those from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study reported theirs in 1988. All study participants were followed for more than 22 years. During this period, women reported 1,226 hip fractures while men reported 490. ‘Increased risk of 9%’ for every glass of milk Of those who consumed four or more glasses of milk a day as teenagers, men were on average 1.9 cm taller as adults than men who consumed two or fewer glasses a week, while women were 1.7 cm taller. Overall, men reported higher consumption of milk in their teenage years than women, with 2.1 glasses per day, compared with 1.6. However, milk consumption in men between the ages of 13 and 18 was associated with higher risk of hip fractures later in life, and every additional glass of milk each day increased this risk by 9%. The researchers note that the increased risk of hip fractures in men was partially influenced by their height. Explaining their findings, the researchers say: “Milk consumption in early life not only builds bone mass but also increases height, and height is a risk factor for hip fractures in later life. This was true in our cohorts, where risk was increased by approximately 5% per centimeter. A mediating effect of height can partially account for our observed positive association between teenage milk consumption and hip fractures in men, as risk was attenuated when height was added to the model.” The investigators found no association between milk consumption in women and increased risk of hip fractures. Concluding their study, the researchers write that higher milk consumption during teenage years did not translate into a reduced risk of hip fracture for older adults, and a positive association was observed in men. |

Bone fracture can happen during sex, especially if you naturally do not have a straight leg. If you are the type that loves salt and you take in too much sodium, you may likely be prone to fracture while experimenting with some new sex styles or positions. This is because while excess of sodium is removed during urination, it unfortunately takes huge amount of calcium along which makes the bone to be deficient of calcium and may lead to fracture during active sexual play. It is advisable to eat more fresh food, especially vegetables and egg yolks; they are a good source of vitamin D and calcium. These are crucial for your bones, and then cut back on sodium. You may also experience some form of fracture during sex if you take medications like steroids, cholesterol-lowering drugs, some weight loss drugs and some blood thinners. Intake of soda drinks seems to decrease the density of bones; probably because of the phosphoric acid in them. It is better to just drink a glass of water or homemade juice. And too much of alcohol also slows the formation of new bone tissue; so it is better to stick to healthy wine drink. Sitting too much at one spot damages the back bones and in order to have healthy back for good sexual activities, try to move about and add weight-bearing exercise to your daily activities such as tennis, dancing or jogging. Cigarettes are bad for your whole body and that includes your bones. Studies have shown a strong link between smoking and a decrease in bone density. And women who smoke make less oestrogen, a hormone that is key to bone health and healthy sex. Couples who are overweight rarely will have low bone density and being too thin raises your chance of developing osteoporosis. I am not suggesting obesity is a safe or healthy way of life but consider your bone health before starting a weight-loss programme. Sex isn’t a minefield of dangers, but accidents can and do happen. So, when you’re imagining how good it will feel, also try to think of how bad it could feel if something went wrong. Most often, these mishaps are sustained while having sex in non-traditional settings, such as on stairs, over kitchen tables, in closets or when trying new sexual positions. It is therefore very paramount to have safety tips at hand. So, what are these safety tips, you may ask. Most of the safety tips are just common sense. If anything causes discomfort, it should be discontinued immediately and just because something is supposed to be ‘fun,’ it doesn’t mean it works for everyone. If it’s going to destroy your health, then stay in your familiar territories. Do not to push yourself past your own level of flexibility or cardiovascular health. Some people can’t touch their toes while some have been advised by their doctors not to raise their heart rate [following a heart attack or stroke]. So, when it starts to get physically stressful, they may have problems. It is wise to watch out for potential danger. I’m not talking about danger of sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and those are dangerous too, obviously: but rather, I’m talking about the rug burn, the pulled hair, and the overzealous nipple bite. What some partners may naturally not count as “injuries” during rough sex due to strange fantasies may send them to the hospital. For instance, some people say they enjoy hard face slapping, spanking with belt, hard hair pulling, pushing and pulling like a doll. This is definitely a sign of disrespect to the personality of the receiver and it still baffles me how someone would receive reddish swollen marks, scratch and bruising, strain, and still such acts are excitement of intensity pleasures and arousals. My question is, since when does pain or crack become a form of enjoyment and relaxation? Don’t expect heart stopping intercourse, it may claim your life. Although at the moment of sexual escapade, it might not seem like you are endangering your heart and life because of the amount of fun you’re experiencing at that moment, but remember that sex is still a form of exercise with particularly steamy sessions burning over 300 calories in an hour. And research has found that the increased physical exertion during sexual activity can actually triple your risk of a heart attack in the hours shortly after it. |

Did you know that cancer is no respecter of even children? It is not only adults that suffer this horrible disease. A recent study by scientists at the Roswell Parks Cancer Institute, United States of America, shows that it is the second leading cause of death in children younger than 15 after accidents in developed countries. It is often detected late and misdiagnosed because when care givers, health care professionals and parents see its signs and symptoms in these children, they think it is a growth or phase that the children will outgrow. But this is often not the case; nobody outgrows cancer growth. Rather, it should be taken out as soon as it is detected. Head, Paediatric/ Oncology Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Prof . Adebola Akinsule says children develop cancer but if detected and treated early, they have 80 per cent chance of surviving it than adults. Akinsuile, who spoke at an awareness programme organised by Help to Heal /Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation, in collaboration with Golden Tulip Hotels in Lagos on Thursday, notes that even though its curable, many Nigerian children die from it due to various challenges. One of them is late detection and misdiagnosis. According to paediatric oncologist, many children have died of various cancers because of lack of knowledge on the part of the parents and the caregivers like nurses and doctors. He says because the nature and type of cancers that develop in children are different from those that develop in adults, they are not easy to spot. Akinsuile adds that cancers in children are hard to recognise because its symptoms mimic common illnesses like malaria, bumps and bruises which can mask the early warning signs. He states, “Cancer in children is not as a result of the lifestyle or environmental risk factors like smoking, pollution and drinking. Instead, it’s usually the result of DNA changes in cells that take place very early in life even from the womb. This is difficult for many to accept. “Cancer can happen to anybody even in babies. When its symptoms start, most mothers think it is malaria or measles, it is until they see the right doctor that they can know that it is cancer,” the expert stresses. He pleads with parents to stop self medication on their children and take then to see a doctor or specialist any time they notice an usual growth or when they fall ill frequently. Akinsuile notes, “It is parents that can help us fight cancer in children because they are the first to see it. They are the ones that will bring the child to the hospital; children don’t come to see the doctors on their own. “Don’t be scared to take your child to a doctor if you notice that he/she has an unusual growth in any part of the body. It could be cancerous and if we need to remove it early. Today, up to 70 per cent of all cases of cancer in children can be cured, you cannot say that for adults. It is not a verdict that your child will die.” To shed more light on cancer in children and to encourage early detection, experts on kidshealth.com take a closer look at the top five cancers found in children and the warning signs . Leukemia Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow. It is the most common childhood cancer and accounts for about 34 per cent of all cancers in children. All cases occur between the ages of two and four and is more common in males than females. Symptoms – Leukemia starts with bone and joint pain, fatigue, weakness, bleeding, fever and weight loss. Brain Tumours and other nervous system tumours make up about 27 per cent of childhood cancers. Most brain tumours in children start in the lower parts of the brain, such as the cerebellum or brain stem. Although brain tumours are typically different in children as opposed to adults, many of the symptoms remain same. They include headache, dizziness, balance problems, vision, hearing or speech problems and frequent vomiting Neuroblastoma It arises from immature nerve cells in infants and young children. Primarily found in children younger than five, this disease often begins in the adrenal glands and makes up sevten per cent of childhood cancers in the US. It’s more common in males than females, and only one to two per cent of children with this disease have a family history of it. Symptoms: Impaired ability to walk and changes in eyes (bulging, dark circles, droopy eyelids).Pain in various locations of the body and diarrhoea and high blood pressure Wilms Tumour It starts in the kidneys and is the most common type of paediatric kidney cancer. Wilms tumours usually only form in one kidney, but sometimes both – only in small cases – and accounts for about five per cent of all paediatric cancers. This disease is typically found in very young children – three to four years old – and is not common in children over six. There are approximately 5000 new cases and about 9 out of 10 children are cured. Symptoms: Swelling or lump in the belly, fever, pain, nausea and poor appetite. Lymphoma It starts in certain cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. These cancers affect lymph nodes and other lymph tissues, like the tonsils or thymus. They can also affect the bone marrow and other organs, and can cause different symptoms depending on where the cancer is growing. Symptoms: •Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin, unexplained weight loss, fever, sweats and weakness. Copyright PUNCH. |

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is making frantic moves to charge two sons of the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido to court. Aminu and Mustapha Lamido were flown to Abuja in the early hours of Friday by the operatives of the commission after their arrest in Kano on Thursday. There are strong indications that the anti- graft agency may charge the two brothers for fraud involving billions of naira belonging to the people of Jigawa State. It was learnt that the EFCC traced about N10bn to the accounts of companies of which the governor and his two sons were alleged to be directors and signatories to the account. The alleged transactions took place between 2007 and now. The commission has been holding the governor’s sons in relation with billions of naira belonging to the Jigawa State Government which were traced to their accounts of companies of which they and their father are said to be directors since Friday. On Monday, the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that the commission was still grilling the suspects. He also said that the commission was still in custody of the two brothers because operatives involved in the investigation were not yet through with them. “They are still with us; they are with us because they are still being interrogated,” Uwujaren said. Investigation however revealed that the commission was making painstaking efforts to ensure proper investigation and to charge the suspect to court if culpability was established against them. A source at the commission, who confided in our correspondent because he was not authorized to speak on the issue, said that the commission would take the suspects to court as soon as they have evidence that could stand the test of the court. “You see, the commission is conducting a holistic investigation into this issue. “If those conducting the investigating do it hurriedly, and the matter gets struck out in the court, Nigerians will say that the EFCC is doing a shoddy job.” Copyright PUNCH. |
The All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday continued to trade words on the governorship election in Anambra State which the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared inconclusive. While the APC which insisted on the cancellation of the poll, accused the PDP of being an accessory to the “shameful electoral malfeasance” in the state , the ruling party described the opposition party as a bad loser. The opposition party, in a statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, wondered why a party would hail an election that its own candidate and his family members did not find their names in the voter register that was used to conduct the exercise. It said, “In its inordinate ambition to humiliate our party at all costs, the PDP has ended up humiliating itself and embarrassing the nation. Or how else does one describe a bizarre situation in which a party will describe as free and fair, an election in which its own candidate and his family could not find their names in the voter register? The joke is indeed on the PDP. “It is now clear who the PDP is working for. The PDP has no qualms about sacrificing its own candidate and disgracing the nation as long as it will achieve its aim of humiliating the APC.’’ But the PDP said the APC’s insistence on total cancellation of the election was aimed at tainting the integrity of the entire electoral process in the country. It said at a news conference in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, that Nigerians should not take the APC seriously. While saying that the APC praised the commission to the high heavens when it won the governorship election in Edo State, it (APC) condemned INEC when it lost the Ondo State governorship election. It said, “In Ondo State, the APC (then ACN) came third; during the Delta State rerun senatorial election, APC came fourth; in Anambra State, APC is coming third; but the APC went ahead to discredit Anambra State election.” The PDP claimed that it was a chief of the opposition (name withheld), who allegedly compromised some staff of the commission in a particular local government area in the state, which led to the inability of the electorate to cast their votes. In its statement, the APC said the poll should be cancelled because it was grossly- tainted and widely-manipulated. It also called on INEC to come clear on its claim that the election was sabotaged, with a view to establishing how entrenched the forces of evil within the commission were. The APC also claimed that doing so would help to avert a looming national disaster which an infiltrated, incompetent and conniving INEC could plunge Nigeria into. The party said it was now apparent that INEC was indeed not taking seriously, the opinions of Anambra residents as well as local and foreign observers that most of the registered voters in the state were willfully disenfranchised on Saturday. The statement reads in part, “First, the electoral commission proposed a make-up election in only 65 polling units in Obosi before scaling things up to a supplementary election in those areas where election was cancelled. “But we say, without equivocating, that a total cancellation of the election and the organisation of a fresh poll, under the supervision of a credible Resident Electoral Commissioner, will be acceptable to our party.” The APC also challenged INEC to quickly carry out an internal investigation to determine the extent to which the election was sabotaged and compromised to the embarrassment of the nation. It added that what occurred on Saturday might actually be treasonable. The party said, “It is not enough for INEC’s detached Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to tell the nation that an INEC official sabotaged the election in a certain part of the state; he must tell the nation who this fellow is, who he/she is working for, what is the extent of the damage he/she has done to this and previous elections, and whether or not he/she has access to the commission’s database of voter register, which was apparently tampered with for Saturday’s election. ‘’Prof. Jega must also tell Nigerians why 16 Electoral Commissioners, who migrated to Anambra days before the election ostensibly to supervise things, could not ensure the success of an election in a single state, when even a polling unit behind the INEC office in Awka did not get voting materials till after 9 am on election day.” |

About 100 million Nigerians live in destitution, the World Bank has said. The World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Marie-Francoise Marie-Nelly, said this at the bank’s Country Programme Portfolio Review in Enugu on Tuesday. She said that the bank’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria stood at $5.34bn. According to the World Bank boss, the number of Nigerians living in destitution makes up 8.33 per cent of the total number of people living in destitution all over the world, which the bank plans to reduce drastically by 2030. She said, “1.2 billion people live in destitution out of which 100 million are Nigerians. Inequality is rising in many developing nations. “For this reason, the World Bank’s corporate perspective has shifted more strategically in the past year. The World Bank wants to galvanise international and national support around two goals: to end extreme poverty in a generation and to push for greater equality. “To end extreme poverty, the World Bank Group’s goal is to decrease the percentage of people living on less than $1.25 a day from 20 per cent today to three per cent by 2030. “The goal is to promote income growth of the bottom 40 per cent of the population in each country. In Nigeria, 63 per cent of the population live on less than $1.25 a day.” Marie-Nelly said although the World Bank was the largest overseas development agency that provided assistance to Nigeria, the contribution of the organisation to the country was very small compared to the budgets of the states and the Federal Government. She said if the World Bank’s small assistance could produce so much result because of effective implementation and monitoring, the revenues accruable to the country could do much more if they were similarly utilised. Giving a more graphic picture of the World Bank’s credit to Nigeria in relation to revenues accruing to the nation, Marie-Nelly said while the bank’s total commitment to Nigeria amounted to $4.67bn by 2012, the budget of the states and Federal Government amounted to $64.05bn in the same year. She said the World Bank’s portfolio amounted to $5.34bn as of June 2013, while the budget of the Federal Government alone for 2013 amounted to $31.17bn. She said the bank had shifted from being Federal Government centric to a more balanced federal and state level support. She said the annual Country Programme Portfolio Review, which the bank undertakes with various governments, was necessary to assess the progress in achieving the development objectives as well as the quality of implementation of the projects. |
