PoliticsInec: We Can Cope With More Political Parties by marryjesus(op): 5:49am On Jul 02, 2017
Contrary to popular perception that there are already too many political parties, with mounting fears that it might become unwieldy for the electoral body to manage, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) insists it has capacity to manage not minding the number of parties.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, while responding to enquiries from The Guardian on the issue said INEC should not be held responsible for the multiplicity of political parties since the law allows the proliferation.

According to Yakubu: “We have 45 political parties today, but remember that we had 60 parties before the last general election in 2015. In many countries less well-endowed than we are, you hear about 100 or more political parties. And so, given our population, diversity and number of constituencies, the number of political parties we have at the moment and possibly more parties to be registered before the next general elections can be effectively managed by INEC… As you can see, the number of parties we have in relation to our diversity is not too much to handle.”

The university teacher added that a multi-party or plural democracy should not restrict the number of political parties stressing, “as the saying goes, the more the merrier. Ultimately, citizens are the beneficiaries because they will be offered greater opportunity for choice.

Founding member of the National Conscience Party (NCP) and human rights lawyer, Comrade Femi Aborisade, has equally thrown his weight behind the registration of more parties in the polity as long as they satisfy the conditions for registration.

“Yes, I am absolutely in support of continuous registration of more political parties as long as they meet the necessary requirements of law for registration. I will never support in any form, any attempt to discourage the association of any group of Nigerians to participate in the political process, carried out by any organisation, body or individuals, be it INEC, the Nigerian Police or whatever, as long as such people meet the requirement of law to associate, participate and contribute to the democratic process,” he said.

Constitutional lawyer, and member of the defunct Justice Uwais Electoral Panel, Festus Okoye, begs to differ, saying since most of the political parties have the same ideological platform and content with different degrees of emphasis on issues, “It is my considered view that Nigeria does not need more than five political parties. Presently, only about five political parties have any form of representation in the states’ and National Assembly and the same thing applies to the local councils across the federation, and at area councils in the Federal Capital Territory.

Former INEC national commissioner in charge of South West, Prof. Lai Olurode, says what should worry Nigerians more than the proliferation of political parties is how to ensure that parties reflect and retain the ideologies on which they were founded.

PoliticsIpob Replies Apga by marryjesus(op): 9:00pm On Jul 01, 2017
We the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and it’s leadership worldwide view the childish antics of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) as a jealously laden, derisory attempt to deflect attention away from the fact that APGA as the governing party in Anambra State has been responsible for the death of innocent Biafrans numbering over 2000 since the formation.

The two notable instances being the infamous Ezu River bodies and the heinous massacres at Nkpor and Head Bridge Onitsha respectively. Willie Obiano, from APGA, superintended the wholesale slaughter of innocent unarmed Biafrans on different occasions. The party employed wholesale slaughter of their people as a way of stopping the agitation for restoration of Biafra not knowing that we are prepared to keep dying until Biafra is restored as we swore.

In the purported letter written by the party in Anambra State threatening a showdown with IPOB led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu which gave order of no election in all Biafraland starting from Anambra Gubernatorial election come November this year 2017, APGA failed to mention the fact that Biafrans and IPOB in particular campaigned and voted for both Peter Obi, Rochas Okorocha and Willie Obiano but were rewarded with shoot at sight orders issued by both men.
It is very unfortunate that APGA as a political party preoccupied with feathering the nests of a select few, underestimate the desire of every genuine Biafran to be liberated from the slavery and bondage that Nigeria has come to represent. APGA is motivated by personal greed and self aggrandisement unlike IPOB that is purely focused on the liberation of our people and by extension, other oppressed people in Nigeria.
The spurious and childish accusation that our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is also the Director of Radio Biafra and Biafra Television to stop parading himself as emperor smacks more of envy borne out of desperation than a reasoned assertion. There is no one more humble than the IPOB leader, that is why he is loved by millions, so the little anti Biafra rant by APGA will only encourage us the more to ensure that the lockdown of Anambra State come 18 November 2017 is total and compete. We would prove to APGA that our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has never in his life, since the inception of IPOB, indulged himself or arrogated any powers to himself. He has advisers, but more critically he is under the guidance of the supreme Almighty Creator Chukwu Okike Abiama that sent him. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is an easy going, caring and deeply passionate person when it comes to Biafra. The perverse insinuation that he made himself a god is a clever ploy designed to appeal to the envious nature of certain individuals who wish to be like him but can never.
It is insulting for a party that supervised the killing of thousands of IPOB family members, which they connived with the APC Government of Buhari to cover up, to be advising the same people they killed to turn against IPOB. History will remember the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) as the party that murdered those that voted her into power.
The founding father APGA General Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu will be turning in his grave because of the way Willie Obiano and co used the party as a vehicle to murder thousands of people seeking out collective freedom. Today, incompetent hands and political contractors in the society have ruined the party, they have turned the party into a killer political machine that appear harmless during campaigns, only to unleash terror on innocent citizens once they are enthroned in office.
We are not deterred by the noise coming from APGA because after November 2017 they will cease to exist as a political force because they killed innocent Biafrans fighting for the liberation of all of us. We stand strongly to tell the whole world the position of IPOB under the command leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu that we IPOB will not be participating in any party politics or electioneering in Anambra State or elsewhere for that matter. All we are asking for is a date for referendum not war so the people of Biafra can decide their fate in this abominable entity called Nigeria.
The political vampires who are APGA members and other politicians in Biafraland claiming to be lovers of Biafra and her freedom should know that if Nigeria Government fail to give Biafrans a date for referendum to ascertain the will of the people in no distant time, there will be no more elections in Biafraland.
Every sensible human being, civilized and lettered person or group in the whole world knows that quest for self determination is not a call for war and also a call for referendum is not in any way tangled with any hate speech. We hope men and women of good conscience and integrity can assimilate the meaning of the words referendum and self determination, then prevail on Nigeria Government to fix a date for

PoliticsMoney Politics Signposts Danger To Nation’s Polity, Says Akande by marryjesus(op): 7:03am On Jul 01, 2017
The first national chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, has observed that money-politics might soon kill Nigerian politicians and political system if not curtailed.

According to Akande, money-politics has eroded the core values of politics, which is to serve the people, saying Nigeria politicians are sitting on a time bomb with the practice and growing of monetisation of politics.

Akande stated this yesterday in his opening remarks at the meeting of Osun APC Elders Forum, tagged, ‘Agba Osun,’ held at his country home in Ila Orangun.

The former Osun State governor, who said he could not think of a step to take to curtail the practice, maintained that the introduction of money politics into the political system is detrimental to its development and progress.

He warned the APC leadership not to deviate from the politics of service to the people, no matter the pressure being promoted by the general outlook of corruption that forms the foundation of the country’s problems.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the APC elders also frowned at what they described as “strange political practices being imported to the Southwest, especially politics of stomach infrastructure, money politics and politics of self-aggrandisements.”

PoliticsCross River Withdraws Ita-giwa’s Official Car Over Relief Materials Diversion by marryjesus(op): 6:42am On Jul 01, 2017
As the face-off between Senator Florence Ita-Giwa and the Cross River State Government deepens, the later has withdrawn the official Toyota Prado Jeep attached to her. This was contained in a letter dated June 9 addressed to her in her capacity as Chairman of the Board of Bakassi Deep Seaport.

The withdrawal might not be unconnected with her recent decamping to the All Progressive Congress (APC) and whistle-blowing on the alleged diversion of relief materials meant for Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Atai Ema, said to have been grabbed by top government and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials in the state.
The letter, captioned, ‘Request for Return of Vehicle,’ from the state government said: “With compliments and best wishes from the office of the Governor, I most respectfully request you to please return the black Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep officially allocated to you by this office on September 6, 2016,”

The letter signed by the Director of Administration, Mr. David Edem, added: “The vehicle, with chassis number JTEBX9FJXCK233671, is required to boost our depleted fleet and deepen our service delivery responsibilities.
“Any inconvenience caused by this request is regretted, while thanking you for your understanding, even as your prompt response to this notice is anticipated. “Please, accept the assurances our deepest respect, consideration and esteemed regards.”
In her absence, the vehicle was on June 15 retrieved by the Transport Officer in the Governor’s Office, Mr. Bisong Agbe, who acknowledged receipt, stating: “I received, with thanks, one Toyota Prado Jeep returned by Ita-Giwa. Vehicle is in good working condition.”
But the former senator condemned the way and manner the vehicle was retrieved, saying the governor in their private discussion, had verbally accepted that she can keep the vehicle, only for some persons to storm her house on June 15, same day some government officials were in Ata Ema trying to defend government’s position regarding the diverted relief materials and at the same time denouncing her as a Bakassi leader.

PoliticsEuropean Court Sentences Baby To Death by marryjesus(op): 10:36am On Jun 29, 2017
A European Human Rights Court has given its verdict on a case of human rights that will compel a couple to allow their sick baby to die.

The parents of the baby Chris Gard and Connie Yates have been in a long legal battle to save their baby who is suffering from a serious genetic illness.
The baby is currently on life support while treatment options were being considered.
At 8 weeks old, Charlie was diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome and is considered to be only one of 16 babies worldwide with this disease.
His condition is progressive and currently incurable and eventually fatal.
Meanwhile, doctors are developing treatments for the various mitochondrial conditions, including the nucleoside treatment Charlie’s parents have been fighting for.
Charlie’s parents prayed the court to determine if they, as parents, have the right to continue to provide medical treatments for their son or if he should be allowed to die
The parents of the 10-months old baby wants the court to let them use a potentially life-saving drug from the U.S. on their son.
They believed that the drug (which is still experimental), would help their son’s genetic condition rather than allow him to die as doctors have recommended.
However a June 27 ruling of the court held that the application by the parents was ‘inadmissible’.
The court said that the baby was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress in pursuit of treatments that were unsure.
It added that any additional treatment would continue to cause harm to the baby stressing that its ruling is “Final”.
“The EHRC also removed the interim measure to keep Charlie’s life support in place.
A spokesman for Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie has been treated since October, has told the parents that there is “no rush” to remove Charlie’s life support.
The spokesman said that any future treatment will involve careful planning and discussion.”
The hospital has said that though there is a deadline in place for Charlie, they wouldn’t have to follow it exactly. The discussion and planning will take some days to work out.
Meanwhile, Charlie’s parents have so far raised over £1.3 million through a GoFundMe account for his treatment.
With the ruling of the court, the parents are unsure what they want to do with the money.
They plan to donate some to the U.S. hospital willing to treat Charlie, while the rest will be put into a charity for other children with similar mitochondrial conditions “so that nobody else ever has to go through what we have.”

PropertiesAfco To Provide 5.5 Million Housing Units To Nigerians by marryjesus(op): 6:20am On Jun 29, 2017
The African Farmers and Cultural Organisation (AFCO) a Non Governmental Organisation( NGO) has revealed plans to address 17 million housing deficit in the country with 5.5 million housing units for Nigerians.

The President/Founder of AFCO, Prince Chukwunwike Esiole,at the formal unveiling of the firm in Lagos over the weekend, said there is a need for the company to address deficit of over 17million housing in the country, hence his organisation planing by targeting about 5.5 million low and affordable housing units in the next 10 years.
Esiole, added that over the next 10 years, the rapid growth of Nigerians urban population is expected to thrust new demand for infrastructure, especially in the area of housing and other social amenities.

Nigeria, he regretted, has failed to keep pace with its growing populace and therefore did not design adequate measures to create affordable housing. “This is why AFCO decided to fill this yawning gap with the homeownership scheme.”
The AFCO Homeownership Contribution Fund, he emphasised, is an avenue through which individuals can save for their rent and also have the opportunity of owning a house. “The Housing Contribution Scheme because AFCO has set up mechanisms to address the housing needs of the Nigerian public towards empowering the low income businessmen and women by educating them on access to soft loans from federal government loan scheme through Bank of Industry while also encouraging agribusiness owners to own a house of their choice for life.
Unlike other schemes, he assured that it won’t be business as usual as there are clear guidelines for the processing of prospective applications. “The process will not be politicied as each applicant is entitled to a flat. Nobody will be entitled to two or more units no matter your status or connection. AFCO would also ensure that whatever is implemented has an African inclusion attached to it because there is need for a clear-cut idea and focus to place our people at the centre of everything we do.”
Esiole , expressed that partners from the World Bank and other multilateral agencies are also involved in the initiative to ensure its sustainability. The Chairman AFCO, Uchenna Ohaegbu, who also spoke to the Guardian said the Housing Contribution Fund initiated by AFCO, seeks partnership with government ministries and the organised private sector to actualise its laudable objectives.

CrimeHoodlums Invade Hostel, Rob, Rape Varsity Students In Rivers by marryjesus(op): 5:42am On Jun 27, 2017
Some yet to be identified gunmen at the weekend invaded an off-campus hostel at Ignatius Ajuru University, in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Council of Rivers State, robbing and raping students and residents in the area.

Some residents who suffered attack during raid regretted that the affected hostel is located close to the Rumuolumeni Police Divisional headquarters, yet no help was received from the security personnel.

They further lamented that the area has been subjected to series of attacks by hoodlums for several months with nothing being done to arrest the ugly development.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of the area who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that the hoodlums were aware of the poor security system in the area, which according to him, spur their steady attack.
He said: “We are being attacked by hoodlums on a weekly basis, and this is because of the poor security in the area, which is aiding the recurrent attacks by the bandits.”
It was gathered that some of the victims have already been hospitalized, while others who sustained minor injuries during the incident have returned to their rooms yesterday from hiding.
A student, Bright John, complained that the regular attacks on the students’ apartment were affecting their academic study. He stressed that each time the robbers invade their apartment, they rob students of their laptops and phones, which contain academic materials.
“We are being robbed and our girls raped by criminals every time. We are living in fear, because these boys come here every time and attack us. They rob us every time at gunpoint. The whole incident affects our studies. So, we are calling on the police to be proactive in providing security to us.”

PoliticsNamdi Kanu Had No Authority To Speak For The Igbos Of The South-east Says Ifeatu by marryjesus(op): 5:18am On Jun 27, 2017
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has decried Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s call on Anambra people to shun forthcoming gubernatorial poll in the state.

The party, in a letter to Kanu, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ifeatu Obiokoye, and made available to the media in Awka on Monday, said the call was irresponsible and devoid of intellectual focus.

It said that Kanu had no authority to speak for the Igbos of the South-East, although APGA acknowledged him as the leader of IPOB.

It explained that Biafra’s concept was a metaphor for the demand for equity and fair play in the Nigeria state and not a separatist movement.
“Nnamdi Kanu’s call for a boycott of elections in the South-East, beginning with the governorship polls scheduled for Nov.18, 2017 in Anambra is irresponsible, irredentist and totally devoid of any focus.
“You must appreciate that for different logical reasons and perception, the Biafra concept has attracted favourable comments among our people, ostensibly borne out of the marginalisation of Ndigbo in the Nigerian state.
“While youths of the East are agitating for Biafra, the Arewa youths are equally restive; the same goes for Níger Delta youths and youths from Oduduwa states.
“In this popular agitation for Biafra, Ndigbo have not instituted a separatist movement or a terrorist gang as it were. We are more concerned about the continued existence of Nigeria under the present structural arrangement,” it said.
The party said that it stood for restructuring and implementation of the 2014 National Conference resolutions “as a certain way to peaceful co-existence among ethnic nationalities and for dousing tension.
It urged Kanu not to be carried away by the success of the May 30 sit-at-home call, which was attributable to many reasons, including fear.
It demanded a re-visit and implementation of the report of the 2014 national conference, which arguably addressed the parameters for the restructuring of the nation.
The party reminded Kanu that the right to vote and be voted for was a universally declared right under the United Nations Charter of People’s and Citizenship Right, and in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

BusinessEtisalat: Debt Talks With Banks Resume This Week by marryjesus(op): 3:49am On Jun 27, 2017
As palpable fear hangs over the fate of Etisalat Nigeria, there is every likelihood that reprieve may come the way of the telecommunications firm this week as the consortium of 13 banks have agreed to truce brokered by the banking and tecommunication regulators.

According to the acting Director, Corporate Communication of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Isaac Okorafor, both the apex bank and the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) would meet with the syndicate of banks and the HIS, the tower managers and the equipment suppliers, in order to achieve a win-win outcome for all parties
Okorafor explained that the apex bank and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) decided to intervene in order to prevent job losses and asset stripping due to the deepening crisis between Etisalat and a consortium of 13 Nigerian banks over a syndicated loan of about US$1.2 billion granted the company by the banks.
Okorafor said: “Although it should ordinarily not be the role of a regulator to decide how individual bad loans are resolved, the CBN believes that Etisalat is a systemically important telecommunications company with over 20 million subscribers that if not well handled, may have domino effects on the banking system itself.”
He explained that the CBN and NCC, sensing that banks may go ahead in the usual way and downsize the company’s over 4,000 staff, reached an agreement to intervene and implore the consortium of banks to be reassess its position in dealing with Etisalat.
Okorafor explained that the collaborative move by the regulators was aimed at foreclosing the outcome of job loss and asset stripping and to ensure that Etisalat remains in business and is able to pay back the loans.
According to him, the CBN and the NCC, in the coming days, will meet with the syndicate of banks and the HIS, the tower managers and the equipment suppliers, in order to achieve what he termed “a win-win outcome” for all stakeholders.
Recall that Etisalat has been embroiled with a consortium of 13 Nigerian Banks that gave it a facility of about US$1.2 billion, on which the company has been unable to meet its repayment obligations in line with agreed terms of the facility.
Given the inability of Etisalat to come to an acceptable agreement with the banks, the largest shareholder in the company, Dubai-based Mubadala Development Company of the United Arab Emirates, has now pulled out of the company as well as the ongoing negotiations, leaving only their local partners, led by Hakeem Belo-Osagie, to carry the burden.

BusinessFg Targets $8 Billion Forex Earning Annually From Yam Export by marryjesus(op): 7:49pm On Jun 22, 2017
The Federal Government says it is targeting about eight billion dollars as annual foreign exchange from the exportation of yams to other countries if its yam export programme succeeds.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this when he received the Technical Committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme in Abuja on Thursday.
Ogbeh said the programme to be flagged off on June 29, would enable the country earn foreign exchange from agricultural produce in order to substitute the oil and gas sector.
According to him, Ghana is exporting yams but we are not, yet we account for 61 per cent of the world yam production.
“This programme has to succeed; we must sell whatever we produce to the world because we are buying too much. We allowed ourselves to be deceived.
“I saw the figures of Ghana’s earning from yam export and their targets for the future and it was quite impressive.
“If Ghana can aim at a few billion dollars a year from yams, there is no reason why Nigeria cannot quadruple that.
“I want this committee to begin to engage team of engineers anywhere in the world. Can we design a plough that can make the yam heap?
`We have to mechanise heap making otherwise, in the next five years, because of our aging farmers, you will find out that we do not have yams again and we will get into fresh troubles,’’ he said.
Prof. Simon Irtwange, the Chairman of the committee, said that the committee was working with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to train farmers and also improve some yam varieties.
The chairman said the committee had prepared a four-year action plan for the yam value chain programme in the country.
He solicited for better funding for the committee which was private sector led to commence the programme.
“We have standards that we are following and they have to do with pytho-sanitary requirements to meet international standards.
“We have combined the standards of Ghana and Nigeria to make sure our yams are not rejected at the international markets,’’ he said.
Mrs Elizabeth Nwankwo, a yam exporter, representing Oklan Best Limited, listed some challenges experienced by exporters to include inadequate transportation and lack of quality seedlings.
She explained that inadequate storage facilities also contributed to the rejection of the country’s agricultural produce at the international markets.
Nwankwo expressed optimism that there would be zero rejection of the country’s agricultural produce, if the challenges were tackled.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the committee was inaugurated in February to facilitate the acquisition of warehouses at the receiving destinations, address markets in Europe and Canada.

PoliticsI Prefers Having Rich Person In Charge Of Economy Says Trump by marryjesus(op): 11:22am On Jun 22, 2017
U.S. President Donald Trump said he wouldn’t want a poor person in charge of the economy, as he defended his cabinet, which is thought to be the wealthiest in the country’s history.

“Somebody said, ‘Why did you appoint a rich person to be in charge of the economy?’” he told supporters at rally in Iowa.

“So I said …. because that’s the kind of thinking we want… because they’re representing the country.”
Making a particular reference to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, a billionaire former investor, Trump said:, “They don’t want the money. And they had to give up a lot to take up these jobs.”Trump, himself a billionaire, went on to refer to Gary Cohn, his chief economic advisor.
“This is the president of Goldman Sachs. Smart. Having him represent us, he went from massive paydays to peanuts, to little tiny … I’m waiting for them to accuse him of wanting that little amount of money.
“These are people that are great, brilliant business minds, and that’s what we need, that’s what we have to have so the world doesn’t take advantage of us.
“We can’t have the world taking advantage of us any more. And I love all people, rich or poor, but in those particular positions I just don’t want a poor person.
“Does that make sense? Does that make sense?
“If you insist I’ll do it but I like it better this way, right?”Trump’s Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is also a billionaire heiress, while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former boss of oil giant Exxon, is thought to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Other rich appointees include Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a former hedge fund manager, and Housing Secretary Ben Carson, who made his fortune selling books on his career in medicine and his political ideas.

PoliticsMan Wears Mum’s Cloth To Office Over Hot Temperature by marryjesus(op): 10:54am On Jun 22, 2017
A call centre worker Joey Barge has adopted a new dress code for himself after he wore his mum’s dress to office following the astronomical rise in temperature in UK.

Temperatures have soared across the country this week and hit highs of 34C in London yesterday causing Barge to go to work with a smart nicker but was sent home for that.
The 20-year-old call centre worker from Aylesbury, had enough of wearing suits in his hot workplace and this time decided to wear his mum’s cloth rather than been sent home the second time for wearing a nicker.
Knowing what office dress codes are like, Barge was even questioning if he would be allowed to wear them before he got to work on Monday.
Rather than changing to a full-on suit which would leave him sweltering in the hot sun, Barge decided to take a rather different approach.
Using the logic that women in the office were allowed to wear dresses, he decided to go for one of those instead and raided his mum’s wardrobe.
He predicted he would be home again soon, but his tactic appears to have partially worked.
Barge said: “The office is so hot and I sweat so much and feel uncomfortable.
“I’m fuming. A quarter of the office are wearing vest tops and skirts/dresses.”
He later tweeted a photograph of an email he had received, which read: “Due to the extremely warm temperatures currently, it has been agreed that gentlemen in the office are permitted to wear 3/4 length shorts.”

CrimeWoman Stabs 4-year-old Daughter To Death by marryjesus(op): 6:18pm On Jun 20, 2017
A mother has been charged to court for stabbing her 4-year-old daughter to death in west Harris County, Houston, Texas.

Laquita Lewis, 34, reportedly stabbed little Fredricka Allen several times in the chest and left her in the bedroom to die.

Laquita was charged with capital murder after the girl was found fatally stabbed late Sunday at Lewis’ apartment complex in Houston. It is not clear why she killed her daughter but there are reports that she had argued with Fredricka’s father, Fredrick Allen, before allegedly stabbing their daughter, a relative said. After stabbing her child, Lewis left the apartment and was involved in a car accident. She was at a hospital when she texted her family to apologize for what had happened.
"She texted that the baby had gone to heaven, that she had killed the baby," Randy Sample, a relative of the deceased said. “It's insane, to take a 4-year-old’s life like that."
“It’s the worst news you’d want to hear about a family member -- especially someone of that age. It’s devastating," Sample added.
Neighbors were having a tough time dealing with the news and said it was really heartbreaking and not something you'll expect from a mother. The deceased was described by neighbours who knew her as a happy child.
According to the Harris County DA's office, Lewis was charged in November for making a terroristic threat during a Thanksgiving incident in which she threatened her 16-year-old son, Lewis, with a knife. She was sentenced in February to 15 months of deferred adjudication in that case. She was still serving her past sentence when she killed her daughter.
The DA's office says that as part of her probation requirements, she was required to take a Texas Risk Assessment System evaluation, which ranked her with a score of zero (the lowest score) for her risk for recidivism.
CPS in Houston said they were also familiar with the family and issued the following statement.“Yeah, she was always happy. She would always tell me that my dog was cute and everything,” said Melody Medina.
"Child Protective Services is investigating this terrible tragedy and we grieve with their family for their loss. We are working with law enforcement to figure out what happened. CPS had previous involvement with this family, but we cannot discuss details because of confidentiality. It is important to learn everything we can about this tragedy and what may have led to it, so our Office of Child Safety will conduct an independent and comprehensive review of how CPS handled any prior allegations involving the Lewis family. Those reports take time, but it will be made available to the public."

CultureNdlea Seize N225 Trillion Cocaine, Heroin At Lagos Ports by marryjesus(op): 6:04am On Jun 18, 2017
Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah said the Agency has seized over 15,064kg of cocaine and heroin worth 225 trillion naira at the Tin-Can and Apapa Ports.

Abdallah said drug barons often target the ports for illicit drug activities, but the agency will resist their scheming. The drugs include; 14,813.40kg of cocaine and 251.22kg of heroin.
According to the NDLEA boss, “the seaports are high risk drug trafficking locations because of the movement of large volume of consignments. Official record of drug seizures at the ports underscores the volatility of the ports in drug trafficking. Since 2006, the Agency has seized over 15,064kg of cocaine and heroin at the Lagos ports.

“The country cannot afford to condone this criminal trade because such huge proceeds in the hands of drugs cartels is threatening. We shall continue to screen incoming and outgoing vessels, thereby making the ports impregnable to drug trafficking organisations.”
Abdallah added that the presence of the NDLEA at the ports is of immense economic and security benefit to the country and that the Agency will maintain alertness and frustrate any action targeted at disrupting her operations at the seaports.
Some of the spectacular drug seizures made at the ports include 14.2 metric tons of cocaine imported from Chile and intercepted in June 2006 at the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos. The drug, which was concealed in a shipment of white cement was rated the single largest seizure of cocaine in Africa and fifth largest in the world.

PoliticsAyade Increases Aides To 5,096 Despite Zero Allocation by marryjesus(op): 5:11am On Jun 14, 2017
Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade yesterday approved the appointment of additional 1, 096 aides, bringing the total number of political appointees to 5, 096.The appointments come in spite of the state’s huge monthly wage bill of N5.1 billion and zero allocation from the Federation Account.

Ayade said: “Our wage bill is about N5.1billion when you put the local governments and the civil service together. We have a federal allocation of about N2 billion plus and our debt being deducted at source is about N2 billion. So, the state gets zero allocation and an internally generated revenue of less than N500 million.”
The state government in its democracy day message said it had the most bloated government in Africa with over 4,000 appointees with the lowest federal allocation in the country and yet it was embarking on gigantic projects.

“It is not magic but intellectual engineering and managing everything as if my life depends on it,” Ayade said.
Details of the appointment shows 789 were appointees to boards, commissions and agencies while 307 were special advisers, senior special assistants and personal assistants to commissioners, paramount rulers, permanent secretaries and youth liaison officers, among others.
However, the chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Clarkson Out, said it was an irony that a government that cannot promote its civil servants and lamenting unbearable financial cost was appointing scores of aides.
“The salary of the appointees is well above that of directors; we cannot understand. It is just duplication upon duplication and we don’t really know what the government is driving at.
“We can’t stop him. If he wants to appoint 3,000 more, that is left for him provided that he does not shortchange us or interfere with payment of salaries and other welfare packages for civil servants,” he said.

PoliticsOsinbajo Tasks Judiciary On Corruption by marryjesus(op): 4:52am On Jun 14, 2017
Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has beckoned on stakeholders in the nation's justice system to evolve a workable mechanism to address the cankerworm of

corrupt practices that have engulfed law practice in the country.
Prof. Osinbajo was speaking at the Opening ceremony of the Golden Jubilee Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University auditorium, Awka.
The Conference with the theme " Law, Security and National Development ", had as its participants, Law teachers drawn from all Tertiary Institutions across the country where Law is being taught.
Declaring the conference open, Prof Osinbajo who noted that the nation's judicial system is presently under siege by grand corruption, said the negative implications of the cankerworm in the justice administration system for the war against insecurity in the country have been dire.
He also harped on the need for the redefinition of the context of insecurity in the nation's jurisprudence beyond the physical violence and crimes, to include denial of social justice and other deprivations, corruption among others, adding that only then will the various threats of secession, terrorism, restiveness and excision be addressed, as they all bother on the failure by the State to create an inclusive society.
The Acting President who described law teachers as creators and custodians of the foundational premises of law, said the conference presents the opportunity for them to step back and brainstorm on the teething challenges of the legal profession, in other to comeback with more practicable solutions to them.
Governor Willie Obiano in his goodwill message, noted that Anambra presents an example of a state that has significantly transformed from an address of lawlessness to a postcard of excellence, peace and good governance, observed that the decision to award the hosting rights for the event to Anambra lends credence to the fact.
He urged participants to utilize the event to lend new depths and ideas to the intellect of younger practitioners in the law profession.
The Chairman on the occasion and Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen who was represented by a judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Amina Augi emphasized that law plays a vital role in ensuring economic and political stability in any human society, hence the need to intermittently review the efficacy of existing laws and their implementation to evolve more pragmatic ones.
In a keynote address, the Chairman, Society for Analytical Economics, Prof Godwin Owoh advocated the need to connect the law with the concurrent dynamics of growth empirics to be able to sustain the Nigerian economy in a manner that guarantees growth security and development.
The Vice chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Joseph Ahaneku acknowledged that the event is in keeping with the University's function of identifying societal challenges and providing answers to them.

Car TalkApple Sees Autonomous Cars As ‘core’ Technology by marryjesus(op): 6:08pm On Jun 13, 2017
Apple views autonomous driving systems as a “core technology” for the future, chief executive Tim Cook said in an interview aired Tuesday.

Cook told Bloomberg television that Apple wants to move into the automotive sector because “there is a major disruption looming” from new technologies.

The auto sector, Cook said, is being transformed by artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology as well as by the development of better electric cars and the growth of ridesharing.

“We are focusing on autonomous systems,” he told Bloomberg.
He said Apple sees this as “the mother of all AI projects” and that this is “a core technology that we view as very important.”
While Apple has given no indication of specific projects for autonomous vehicles, it has joined the list of companies with permits to test self-driving cars in California, according to state records.
The California-based tech giant is expected to focus on software systems, letting partners manufacture vehicles, but would understandably want to be able to test its navigation technology in cars.

BusinessYahoo Is No Longer An Independent Company by marryjesus(op): 6:01pm On Jun 13, 2017
After more than two decades, Yahoo's time as an independent company has finally come to an end.

Verizon (officially completed its deal to acquire Yahoo's core Internet assets for $4.48 billion after months of uncertainty about the deal, both companies announced Tuesday.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is resigning from the company. She will receive a $23 million severance package, according to an earlier company filing.
"Given the inherent changes to my role, I'll be leaving the company," Mayer wrote in an email to the company. "However, I want all of you to know that I'm brimming with nostalgia, gratitude and optimism."

"Verizon wishes Mayer well in her future endeavors," the company said in a statement.
Yahoo and AOL will form a new digital media company under Verizon called Oath. Verizon's goal is to use Yahoo's enormous reach to compete with the likes of Facebook and Google for online advertising.
Verizon expects to cut as many as 2,100 employees from the combined venture, or about 15% of the staff, according to a source familiar with the matter.
What remains of Yahoo will be renamed Altaba Inc. It will effectively serve as a holding company for Yahoo's large stake in Alibaba the Chinese e-commerce company.
The deal's close comes nearly a year after the acquisition was first announced. The acquisition was thrown into doubt after Yahoo disclosed two massive security breaches affecting more than one billion users.
Verizon eventually agreed to move forward after cutting the price tag by $350 million and requiring Yahoo to split the cost of any legal liabilities resulting from the breaches.
The acquisition marks the end of an era for an Internet icon.
Yahoo originally offered a directory of websites to guide users through the new world of the Internet. It was almost synonymous with the Internet itself for much of the 1990s with a market value that topped $100 billion around the dot-com boom.
For the majority of its existence, however, Yahoo struggled to find relevance. It shuffled through CEOs, struggled with whether to be a media or technology company, and bet big on acquisitions like Geocities while passing up a chance to buy Facebook.
Under Mayer, Yahoo made one last push to prove it could be more than a fading Internet pioneer.
Mayer acquired dozens of startups for talent to compete with mobile apps. She also hired big name media personalities like Katie Couric and acquired Tumblr to reach a younger demographic. But these costly efforts did little to turnaround Yahoo's business.
"I'm really sad to see the end of Yahoo as an independent company," says Tapan Bhat, a former senior vice president at Yahoo. "The turmoil of the last few years has obscured the value that Yahoo provided from the earliest days of the web to the latter part of the first decade of the '00s."
While Yahoo's heyday is over, insiders take solace knowing Yahoo alumni remain a force in defining the Internet. Former Yahoos, as they like to call themselves, have founded or run a long list of businesses, including Slack, WhatsApp and LinkedIn.

PoliticsMassob Preaches Peace, Meets Northern Groups by marryjesus(op): 8:22pm On Jun 12, 2017
Mr. Ralph Uwazurike, leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has appealed for peace as he holds consultation with Northern groups in Kaduna.

Uwazurike, who led a delegation of Igbo leaders from the South East, told some youth groups in Kaduna on Monday that MASSOB had pursued the path of peace since its creation in 1999.
“MASSOB had existed for 18 years without violence, but 2009, I went to London and opened Radio Biafra and handed it over to Nnamdi Kanu as the director.
“Soon afterwards, politicians hijacked him, and he started working for them.
“The radio that was meant to educate our people and advise our people was turned into the source of hate messages, blackmail, intimidation and others.
“ The resultant effect was that, the northern youths came up to challenge us, to say that they are not happy with the hate messages and the insults they receive from the same radio.
“ I am here today to say that the main purpose of floating the organisation called MASSOB was not to cause crisis in Nigeria.
“ I assured the late Odumegu Ojukwu when he was alive that there would be no other civil war in Nigeria.
“ Because he, Ojukwu was so concerned and wanted some measure of assurance from me that MASSOB would not cause problems in Nigeria and I gave him that assurance.
“And I am today disappointed, that the assurances I gave, may not see the light of the day, if certain measures were not taken, and that is why I am here in Arewa House today.”
He assured of the safety of the northerners resident in the South East and urged them to continue with their businesses in the area.
“I am here to assure you northerners that all your people in the South East are safe and nobody will harass them.
“And, I am happy to hear my friend, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, who assured of the safety of lives and property of Nd’Igbo in Northern region.”
Nwazurike averred that the crisis in the country was being manipulated by politicians and urged the youth not allow themselves to be used.
He, however, stressed the need to address perceived marginalization, adding that though it was right for any part of the country to seek self determination, it was wrong to pursue same through violent means.
“Self determination without violence is a fundamental right, we must strive against sowing the seed of discord ‎but do all that will promote peace and justice.
“There is a gap of communication from our leaders which needs to be bridged, hence we are meeting with notable leaders in the north to persuade them that there is no cause for alarm,“ he said.
Meanwhile, Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who convened the meeting, said it was in response to recent quit notice issued by some northern groups to Igbos.
He said that the meeting was to intervene in the impasse threatening the unity and oneness of the country.
According to Al-Mustapha‎, the youths need to wear their thinking caps, use their brains and refuse to be used in fomenting any form of crisis in the country.
He said current events may not be unconnected with external forces wanting to see Nigeria disintegrate.
Al-Mustapha also cautioned the youth against making statements that would further cause tension in the country, in spite of the unpleasant comments from IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

PoliticsDasuki: Court Rejects Efcc’s Documents In Aide’s Trial by marryjesus(op): 7:24pm On Jun 12, 2017
The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday rejected an e-payment document tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the ongoing trial of Col. Nicholas Ashinze, an aide to retired Col. Sambo Dasuki.

The judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, held that the e-payment schedule of N3.12 billion issued from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and N2.5 billion from office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) did not meet the provision of the Evidence Act.

Ashinze is standing trial with an Austrian, Wolfgang Reinl; Edidiong Idiong and Sagir Mohammed, on a 13-count charge of money laundering. The others defendants were Geonel Integrated Services Limited, Unity Continental Nigeria Limited, Helpline Organisation, Vibrant Resources Limited and Sologic Integrated Service Limited.

At the resumed trial, the prosecution witness, Hassan Seidu, an EFCC investigator, told the court that during their investigation, the EFCC requested for e-payment schedule evidence from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
He said the request was to know how the payment of N3.12 billion on April 11, 2014 and N2.5 billion on Feb. 16, 2015 were transferred to two accounts. He further stated that CBN sent the certified true copy of the e-payment slip used for effecting the transfer to Geonel Integrated services Ltd and Unity Continental Nigeria Ltd.
When the prosecution applied to tender the e-payment schedule as exhibit, the defence, led by Ernest Nwoye, opposed the tendering and admission of the document.
Nwoye said that “it is a photocopy of what is supposed to be a certified true copy”, and urged court to reject the documents as they were not in full compliance of the law.
He added that there was no stamp of the certifying authority and there was nothing to show that the document emanate from the CBN. Nwoye submitted that the documents contravened Section 104(1) of the Evidence Act.
In his response, the prosecuting counsel, O.I. Uket, told the court to discountenance the objection of the defence. Uket stressed that “where a certificate is issued, there shall be no further question” and relied on Section . 56, 57 and 58 of the Evidence Act.
He further said that the document was certified before it was presented as evidence and was therefore in total compliance to the law. Kolawole after listening to both parties and viewing the documents, held that what the prosecution had produced were photocopies of documents which do not fulfill provision of Section 56, 57 and 58 of the Evidence Act.
