Although the Oyo State Police
Command is investigating the
kidnap of the National Life Vice
President of the Nigerian
Association of Chambers of
Commerce and Industry, Mines
and Agriculture, Chief Adebowale
Omotoso, neighbours of the
victim have expressed fear over
his safety.
Omotoso, who is also the
Chairman of Bond Chemicals
Limited, was kidnapped last
Wednesday in his home in Awe,
Oyo, by gunmen who pretended
to be workers of a dry cleaning
company.
An eyewitness said the gunmen
overpowered the guards at the
gate before abducting Omotoso,
who was said to have arrived
from a foreign trip and was
having a meeting with some
people.
He was said to have been taken
away after being blindfolded
while those who were with him
were ordered to lie down or risk
being shot.
Our correspondent, who visited
Awe on Monday, observed that
the house of the Bond Chemicals
Limited owner on Chief Debo
Omotoso Close, was deserted as
there was no one in sight to talk
to.
One of the neighbours, who spoke
on condition of anonymity, said
the occupants had kept to
themselves since the incident
happened and that they had
refused to discuss the matter
with anyone. He added that
everyone had been praying for
Omotoso’s safe return.
He also said the police presence
had become a common feature in
the neighbourhood since the
incident happened.
Another neighbour, who also
spoke on condition of anonymity,
said his mother heard gunshots
on the night of the incident.
He said, “I was in the church that
evening. When I got home, I
immediately went to sleep. When
I woke up around 9pm, I wanted
to go out, but my mother said I
should stay indoors because she
heard gunshots nearby.
“We later heard people talking
from Baba Bond (Omotosho)
house, which confirmed that
something had happened. We
remained indoors till Thursday
when it was confirmed that chief
had been kidnapped.
“Policemen have been patrolling
here since then. We have not
heard anything about Baba since
and none of his relatives is ready
to talk about it. They show signs
of fear when asked about it. But
we hope that he will be fine.”
Police Public Relations Officer of
the command, Adekunle
Ajisebutu, said the command was
making efforts to ensure that
Omotoso’s kidnappers were
apprehended.
He said, “We have spread our
dragnet to ensure that we arrest
the abductors. The Oyo State
Police Command is working
round the clock and soon we
shall get at them. We are going
to make sure that their victim is
rescued alive.”
On the claim by some family
members of the victim that a
ransom of N10m has been tabled
by the kidnappers, Ajisebutu said
that it was too early to comment
on the alleged demand.
“I don’t want to make any
comment regarding that, because
we don’t want anything that can
affect the investigations we are
making. But what I can say is
that we will soon get at the
abductors and the victim will
soon be rescued.”
