As business owners, we all encounter phases in our businesses when we don't make the progress we originally planned and worked on. Not as a result of not trying, but because life gets in the way. Our businesses and daily lives can be taken over by factors we have no control over. It could be sickness, loss, a pandemic or looting like some of us have had to deal with this past week. If you're in such a situation the first step you should take is acceptance. Acknowledge what has happened and mourn if you want to. You don't have to appear strong all the time, you need to let it out so you can move on. Cry if you want to, take time off if you want to, do what helps you feel better and when you're strong enough, get back to work. Do an in-depth scan of your business, draw up a realistic step-by-step plan, and get to work. There are a few programs available to help entrepreneurs who have been affected by the pandemic and looting, ensure you apply. You can also ask friends and family for help or take a loan if absolutely necessary. You will be fine, you will bounce back, you will find balance, you will achieve your goals. Don't give up! Dear business owner,⠀ We are in a society where speaking up and seeking help is seen as being weak, forgetting that the best of us at our best are only humans after all. ⠀ ⠀ We are in hard times and sometimes, you may not get the results you want, please don't beat yourself up for it. Being a business owner, you understand the value of a team and the value of people. So, reach out to people when you need help. Reach out to comfort people around you. ⠀ ⠀ We need one another more than ever, and more than money, we need our mental health intact. Do not hesitate to take a step back when you are feeling overwhelmed as well. Prioritize your mental health. This too will pass and you will come out stronger. ⠀ Check on someone today, and never risk your mental health for anything. How are you doing? Share your lockdown/ pandemic experience with me. ⠀ ⠀ P.S. I am not an expert or psychologist, I'm just articulating people's fears.⠀ www.martwayne.com |
When I see these images, I analyse both before making a conclusion. Rather than just laugh and move on, I try to think through what could have been done differently. Most times as designers dealing with end users, we are meant to be their consultants. We should advise on what will work for them and what won't taking into consideration many factors like their body shape, the texture and the quantity of fabric. This is different from @garmentproductionhouse where we simply do the designer's bidding and even then, I tend to give them some advice on their designs if I believe it will not work out. In this situation, something went wrong. And someone out there is probably about to make this same mistake. So I ask: a) what went wrong? b) what would you have done differently? For me: 1. I would not have advised on this jumpsuit. If she insisted, 2. I would have put that seam line elsewhere, a bit higher, or made it asymmetric. Its current position draws emphasis on the mid section, which I am certain she is trying to draw attention away from. And 3. I would not have made the pants fitted. Your turn! What went wrong and what would you have done differently? PS. NO body shaming! Image from @distinctvendors Thanks a lot @jullietmorgan for sending this to me www.martwayne.com

It is one thing to have a fashion business, and it's another thing to have a successful fashion business with how competitive the industry is.⠀ ⠀ How do you stand tall in an industry like ours? What separates the big fashion businesses from others? Here are four ways to go about it.⠀ ⠀ 1. Branding⠀ Your brand builds your credibility with customers and sets you apart from every other fashion business. It allows you to position rightly in reaching out to your target market.⠀ ⠀ 2. Picking a Niche⠀ There are different fields of expertise in the Fashion industry. Whichever niche you chose, take time to understand every detail about that niche. This includes the customers, pricing and the best marketing strategy to reach out to your target market. ⠀ ⠀ 3. Unique products/Services⠀ The need for truly unique and beautiful products cannot be over emphasized. If you’re doing what other people are doing, why should they purchase from your brand and not others. No matter what you do, try to differenciate yourself and give people a reason to for your brand.⠀ ⠀ 4. Paying attention to the needs of customers in your niche:⠀ In every niche, customers' needs are specific. Even at that, their preferences may change over time. You have to be aware of the changing needs and offer what they want, not what you think. Understanding what they want and delivering the same to them puts you ahead and at the top of your game It will also help you to be a pioneer in the game, especially when you can use this understanding to predict, deliver or even create trends. ⠀ ⠀ What are other factors do you think can help fashion brands stand out? Learning can only happen in an environment where you're interested in broadening your knowledge and are open to the possibility that some things you know are wrong. ⠀⠀ I learn everyday. From the internet, from my staff, from my students, from my colleagues, from my mentees, from people making enquiries and asking questions. I keep learning. I remember just last week, someone asked me a question and I told her I had no idea. I didn’t lie about it. But I did some research. And guess what? The very next week someone chatted to me about the very same thing and I had all the information they needed. ⠀⠀ The truth is we should never stop learning. How boring would life be if we knew everything?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Stay safe & have a beautiful week.⠀⠀⠀

No matter how long you've been in the industry, there's always that one thing you absolutely can't stand. If it's possible to get rid of it or not deal with it at all, you will.⠀ I'll start with mine. Dealing with artisans. And not just tailors. Carpenters, plumbers, electricians, tilers, bricklayers you name it. ⠀⠀ What about you? What's that thing? Let's hear it⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ www.martwayne.com

So since I saw the @target post and the $20 dress, my mind has been racing. I know people have been talking about going digital and selling digital goods but conversations with different people have shown be that people are still buying products despite the 'halt' of economic activities. To be honest I was very surprised. People have restrategized and created new offerings. I, for one, have seen a huge rise in the demand for the production of ready to wear clothing for designers. Everyday, I get at least 3 requests. The day I spoke to our Guest Speaker, she had just sold a pair of bag and shoes. And I am here thinking: where are they wearing bags and shoes to? So point being, there are still people ready to buy your goods even at this time. So why relax?! Join me on Saturday at 6pm for a LIVE Instagram Chat with Omolara Sanni of @handmadeng to discuss how to identify the products people need and can buy now. Instagram Handle: @Martwayne If you have been selling your normal products or services despite the lockdown, please share with us what you have been selling and how in the comments below. Anything at all. It does not have to be fashion-related. We would love to learn from you. www.martwayne.com

One of the people I am fortunate to have is my mother. Why?! No matter what I delve into, she is the first person to patronize me. And she always pays in full. And this goes for all her kids as well. Sometimes we know she doesn't really need it but she will still be our No 1 customer. She was the very first person to place a Facemask order for her staff and customers. And she waited patiently for me to complete my other corporate orders before starting hers. Initially she didn't really understand the noise I was making about facemasks but if I believed so strongly it was an essential service, then to her, it was. I remember when I had to submit samples, my 73 (soon to be 74) year old mother came to pick me up from home to get my tools. Despite telling her repeatedly not to bother, she sha came. She said in Yoruba: 'this facemask thing is an essential service abi? Ehn let me follow you, just in case, so no one harasses you.' And that was how she took me to my office, waited in the car to get my things, and brought me back home. We did the whole social distancing thing and though I wish she did not stress herself, I was thankful she was there. So this whole facemask production started with her. And my adjustable facemask everyone loves?! It was HER idea. She even drew the attachment for me because she said the round the ear ones hurt so much so we planned how to create something that would bypass the ears. So yes I am so glad I finally delivered her branded face masks without drama. Thank you so much for your support always. Coming from the heart of a deeply grateful daughter. Still taking orders for facemasks. Corporate and individual orders are welcome. You can reach us on 0814 340 2567 Or via email martwayne@gmail.com www.martwayne.com

Do you have a great fashion business idea but have been delaying because of somethings you think are necessary?⠀ Here’s a list of things you don't need, especially when you new. ⠀ ⠀ 1. Thousands of followers ⠀ You don't need a lot of followers so don't get pressured to buy or feel like you won't make sales. With consistency, promotion, and great content, you will grow organically. ⠀ ⠀ 2. Professional photography ⠀ Sure, getting a professional photoshoot is great but if you can't afford it why wait. Your phone can take great photos, if it can't ask a friend/family for help. ⠀ You can also watch a couple of YouTube videos to learn DIY home photography.⠀ ⠀ 3. All social media platforms ⠀ Two platforms are great for a start. You don’t need to be on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tik-Tok, Twitter, and LinkedIn all at the same time.⠀ ⠀ 4. A lot of products ⠀ Don't wait until you can afford to produce or purchase hundreds of designs, you can start with a few and be know for them. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 5. Employees ⠀ If you can't do certain tasks, feel free to outsource, or learn how to it if you can. It's better to not get started with the burden of salary.⠀ ⠀ 6. A perfect logo or website ⠀ You can create a simple logo and website with free tools available such as Canva, Wix, Weebly among others.⠀ ⠀ I'm not saying you can avoid these things forever, but if you want to get started quickly at a minimal cost, you can start without these things and add them later.⠀ ⠀ Have points to add? Let us know in the comments⠀ Www.martwayne.com ⠀ |
It happens to every fashion business owner from time to time. No matter how great the inventory you're purchasing is, you end up with some products that just don’t sell.⠀ ⠀ You may have tried to put them on sale and possibly even at a price below your cost but it seems like they just love you and are going nowhere. Here are five ideas to get those products moving.⠀ ⠀ 1. Re-purpose & Re-Merchandise ⠀ If the styles are basic, you can style it a different way, on a different model and take really beautifully photos. You can also make slight upgrades to the design, if possible.⠀ ⠀ 2. Use creative Discounts⠀ You need to hold a really special discount or sale. Try holding a one-day “flash sale” and make it a major event.⠀ ⠀ 3. Use It as an Enticement⠀ You can bundle the slow-selling products with hot sellers “Get our Tope top for ₦5,000 when you buy a Kemi dress” to boost sales of both products. ⠀ You can even give those items as free gifts with ₦X amount of purchase, as part of your customer rewards program.⠀ ⠀ 4. Gift it to Influencers⠀ If it's a great product, you could gift it to influencers. If you have yet to initiate a gifting program with influencers because of a lack of funds, you’re in luck- now you have the product!⠀ That's way you’ll get free publicity, and who knows, maybe orders for the product.⠀ ⠀ 5. Host Giveaways⠀ If you can't make money off it, you can host giveaways, to boost your brand’s visibility and grow your following. That way, you don't lose. Think about cross promoting the giveaway with different business owners. ⠀ ⠀ Great tips right? Which of these will you be trying out? Let’s discuss in the comments ⠀ www.martwayne.com

Fashion Design is a fascinating and exciting field that will allow you to use your imagination & creativity. ⠀ ⠀ As a Fashion designer, you will create original clothing, accessories, or footwear. You’ll also sketch designs, select fabrics and patterns, and give instructions on how to make the products you design.⠀ ⠀ The fashion industry is very broad, and you most likely won’t master every aspect of it. You should choose a niche you’ll enjoy and and focus your work in that area.⠀ ⠀ In order to get a foot in the door of this competitive industry, hands-on learning is required. This can be achieved by participation in an internship program with a fashion house, clothing manufacturer, or fashion stylist. ⠀ ⠀ If you have a passion for fashion, dream of designing your own clothing line and want to know more about starting your own fashion design business, then get started with our online courses from the comfort of your home .⠀ ⠀ Visit our website at www.martwayne.com or WhatsApp 08143402567 to learn more.⠀⠀

To be honest, a lot of the clothes make sense. ednut1: |
Exactly. That is also how I feel. Even though some can argue that it is too expensive. So the question now becomes would you buy a second hand outfit that was made in Nigeria? Khaleell001: |
Really? But second hand is also a big thing abroad. Vintage they call it. Ogilinsaka: |
But it appears there is a HUGE market for it. So why do people frown at it if it is filling a need? AntiWailer: |
Wow. There really is a market for this. So how do you feel about a ban on these imports to grow the local economy? Kendumazy: |
