An employee of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Mr. Daisi Isaac Aregbesola, aged 38, was electrocuted in Akure, Alagbaka area of Ondo State yesterday when trying to fix a faulty public utility pole. The incident, which happened around 5p.m. attracted some passersby, mostly motorists, who tried in vain to save the life of Aregbesola, as his body was dangling lifelessly between the high tension cables. The Guardian gathered that the deceased resumed for work as early as possible but his boss instructed him to rectify a fault on an electric pole at the front of the Zenith Bank in Alagbaka. The deceased, fondly called ‘Sapee’ by his colleagues and friends, until his death served as an electrical engineer and a contract staff worker with the BEDC. An eyewitness revealed that sympathisers were attracted to the scene as a result of the loud scream of passersby when the late worker received a shock from the high-tension wire while performing his duty. “I had barely walked pass him when I heard a very loud noise and saw him dangling on the pole. It was an unfortunate scene to behold as people rushed down to the ladder to bring the man down from the pole. In fact, it took the BEDC almost an hour to arrive at the scene after the man had died and his body already brought down from the pole by sympathisers,” he said. A source in the electricity firm said the victim was working on the feeder due to some faults detected on the high-tension wires that caused power outage in the area. The estranged wife of the deceased, Funke Adeniyi, also confirmed the incident in a phone chat with journalists in Akure, lamenting that the circumstances surrounding his death was questionable. Adeniyi said her husband was rushed to the Ondo State Specialists Hospital Akure but was confirmed dead on arrival by doctors. “Workers in his office told us that a boss sent him a message to work on the high tension cables due to some fault on the poles. I asked them why did they switch on the light (electricity) when they knew my husband was working on the pole. I am smelling a conspiracy.” Several efforts to reach the BEDC and get the reactions of top management workers proved abortive, as calls made to them were unsuccessful yesterday.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has rejected the downward review of cut-off marks for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, had on Tuesday stated the cut off marks as 120 for degree awarding institutions, 100 for monotechnics and polytechnics and 110 for innovative enterprising institutes. Until the review, the marks were 180 for degree awarding institutions and 150 for the others. But the umbrella body for Nigerian students on Thursday described the new pegs as unreasonable and unacceptable. The group expressed its dissatisfaction during a protest they held at JAMB headquarters in Bwari, Abuja. The protest was led by NANS’ vice president, Olamide Odumosu. Mr. Odumosu said the reduction in the cut-off marks would only lead to corruption and worsen the level of academic performance of students. He said the review would open Nigerian students to exploitation. “JAMB in conjunction with Vice Chancellors and Provosts is exploiting Nigerian Students thereby reducing the level of education in the country,” he said. Mr. Odumosu said the association would mobilise students across the country to protest the review if not reversed. Also speaking, Idowu Ajayi, National Public Relations Officer of NANS, said the increment of the regularisation fees by JAMB from N5,000 to N10,000 should be reviewed. “How can a minister of Federal Republic of Nigeria say something and say it was a mistake? How can scrapping post UTME be a mistake?”, he quipped. The National President of the association, Chinonso Obasi, had in a statement made available to PREMIUM TIMES also condemned the new cut off marks. “Knowledge acquisition is a function of determination and hard work and so if over the years students were able to work hard to meet cut- off points, it doesn’t make logical sense to now lower the points,” he said. Mr. Obasi said the general phenomenon was that Nigerian graduates are not employable, stressing that lowering the entrance marks into Nigerian tertiary institutions would translate to churning out young people who would not be able to meet the demands and expectations of the 21st Century. Yusuf Lawal, Director of Test Administration of JAMB, while addressing the protesters, said JAMB was ready to look into some of the issues raised by the students. Mr. Lawal explained that the cut-off marks were the unanimous decision at the policy meeting convened by JAMB for stakeholders on August 22 in Abuja . “For the cut-off points, JAMB is a clearing house for tertiary institutions. The setup of the board is not to take over process or mandate of the tertiary institutions. “It was the tertiary institutions that met and that we should not dissipate energy on publicity, multiplicity of exam and multiplicity of admission,” he said. He said JAMB would table some of the issues for discussion. “We are already looking at how we can reduce application fee of the coming year.” “There is opportunity for dialogue. It is good we ventilate, discuss and arrive at solution and move the education sector forward,” he said. |
The father and elder brother of 14-year-old schoolgirl, Obiamaka Orakwue, allegedly raped to death by unidentified persons in her home in Abule Ado area of Lagos share their grief with TOLUWANI ENIOLA Please introduce yourself. I am Chinedu, father of the late Obiamaka Orakwue. I am a businessman from Anambra State. I moved into this area (Abule Ado) in 2013. You described as untrue the story on social media of how your daughter died. Can you narrate the true story? I am surprised by the untruths circulated on social media about my daughter’s death. Until her death, Obiamaka was in SS2 and not JSS2. She attended a private school in the area and was justrounding off her examination. She was preparing to enter SS3. Where were you when she was killed? Incidentally I was not around. She was murdered in our home here on July 10. But before I left, she was fine and there was no cause for alarm. According to her mother, she said goodnight to everybody and went to bed early because she needed to wake up early for school. Her mother slept in a separate room. In the morning, they were expecting her to be up from her bed. When her mother called her and got no response, they entered her room and found her in the pool of her blood. They smashed her skull after raping her to death. How did the culprits enter the house? They entered through the window. We have a backdoor through the kitchen but it was not touched. They removed the window glass, burglary and went in. They scaled through the fence to come in because the gate was locked. Two of her elder brothers went to call the police. The police came and took notes and he went with them to make statements. They took the corpse to the mortuary. Is it true that she told her mother that some boys were harassing her in school? She never told any of us that she had problem with anybody. I read on social media that she had arguments with some boys and that she discussed the issue with her mum. It is not true. She never had a boyfriend because I always counselled her that at her age, she was not supposed to have a boyfriend. Maybe she had a boyfriend in her school but we don’t know. She returned from school on July 9 like any other person. What is the outcome of the police investigation? They call it homicide. But we saw that she was raped to death. I am not in the best position to know exactly what happened. The police and the baale of the area as well as the landlord association have been cooperative to unravel the mystery behind her death. We held meetings many times. I slept in the opposite room, I didn’t hear the killers come in — Brother What is your assessment of the investigation? My expectation is that by now, arrests should have been made and the culprits exposed. We are surprised that no arrest has been made so far. Ensuring justice for Obiamaka is the only thing that can heal the pain of the family. This can happen to any family, so it should not be swept under the carpet. If the culprits are arrested, it would serve as a deterrent. It will relax our hearts. Our prayer is that the police would help us to expose those that perpetrated this wicked act. I don’t know why nothing has been done. We are using this opportunity to call on the state government to intervene in this matter. What was your last discussion with her? Before I travelled, I advised her to be very serious with her studies. She wanted to become a pharmacist. I always counselled her that to achieve her dream, she needed to study hard. She was a very brilliant girl. Even her teachers attested to that. She was obedient, calm and not troublesome. |
