The Nigerian Ambassador to the Benin Republic, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), has offered measures capable of addressing the menace of insecurity facing Nigeria, saying that everybody’s participation in achieving a peaceful nation is necessary.
Buratai, a former Chief of Army Staff, spoke on Saturday at a one-day symposium on National security, organised by Arewa House in Kaduna, with the theme ‘Politics and Insecurity in Nigeria: Way Forward’.

He explained that the comprehensive approach should also entail the involvement of critical stakeholders from the society, such as religious leaders, youths, teachers, women, civil society, media, law enforcement as well as the security and intelligence agencies.

“There is a need for the public to be constantly sensitised and enlightened on their roles as stakeholders in the security architecture of the country through agencies such as the National Orientation Agency, among others,” he said.

Buratai also said that the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) would mitigate the challenge of lack of specialised equipment and platforms for the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to curb insecurity.

“This is crucial in meeting the increasing equipment requirements of AFN to confront current and emerging security threats.

“To achieve this, the Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with stakeholders, could put structures in place for adequate manpower training for DICON staff.

“This would further enhance their specialised manpower and increase their capacity for production of military hardware for the AFN,” he said.

Senator Kabiru Gaya has said that there are ongoing efforts to reduce the list of proposed presidential aspirants in the APC, to two. Gaya said this when he appeared on Channels TV this evening.



According to him, the contest is between Bola Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.



The Northern governors had proposed Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Rotimi Amaechi; Governor Kayode Fayemi and Governor Dave Umahi as the consensus candidates but after a fresh deliberation, the list was reduced to three aspirants with Tinubu, Osibanjo and Amaechi making the new list.



Speaking during the interview, Gaya said;



“Well, we are still at the process. We know during conventions like this, decision are taken at the last minute and when done at the last minute, people accept that decision.

Yes, we are trying to trim down. All that we know is that the candidate at the presidency should go to the south. And as it is now, it is going to the south, so that we can have a northern vice-president.

If we don’t agree on one person, atleast two or three persons will go to poll. The party wants the aspirants contesting to be reduced to two or even one.

The two are Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo, so it comes down to the South West. The party would not simply say they’ve dropped a candidate.

When the process begins, the candidate will mount the podium and tell us if they are stepping down, and who they are stepping down for.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is set for its third victory since 2015.
He stated this during a meeting at the State House Abuja that drew in attendance members of the APC National Advisory Council on Sunday.

He appraised the series of consultations held so far towards getting a widely acceptable presidential standard-bearer.

An explosion on Sunday rocked St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to sources, the explosion on the church grounds killed several people and injured many more.

An eyewitness Kehinde Ogunkorode, said the incident caused chaos in the vicinity, with residents fleeing for safety after being caught off guard.

Owo is the hometown of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Shehu Sani, the Nigerian politician and socio-political commentator, on Saturday, lashed out at President Muhammadu Buhari over his frequent foreign trips.
Sani said Buhari was in the habit of traveling abroad when there is a problem in the country.

John Oyegun, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening panel, has given reasons why some presidential aspirants were disqualified on Friday.
At least 10 men who were looking to contest in the ruling party’s primary have been cut off.

While presenting a report to APC national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, Oyegun said:

“The point I want to make is the quality of the people that want to govern this country.

“We are a governing party and so the ability to lead, the background, experience… it is on the basis that we made a shortlist.

“I won’t want to read the names, I’d leave that to you, but we brought the number down to 13.

“We could have cut it a little shorter but we wanted the younger elements to surface.”

As the presidential primary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) draws near, 17 governors elected on the platform of the party have agreed to support whoever preferred aspirant President Muhammadu Buhari presents.
Buhari had, before traveling to Spain, told the APC governors to support him to pick a preferred aspirant who will be endorsed to fly the party’s flags in next year’s presidential election.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state has reacted to former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu's jab while bragging about making him Governor.



Tinubu who addressed delegates of the All Progressives Congress in Abeokuta on Thursday June 2, had said that Abiodun wouldn't have emerged as a candidate of the All Progressives Congress if not for him.



He said;



“That one (referring to Abiodun) that is sitting down here, could he have become governor without me? We were all in the stadium where they tore all the posters. Even the candidacy of the party, they didn’t want to give it to him.

However in a tweet shared today, Abiodun stated that he is not an emperor and the Governorship position is not his family's inheritance. He added that he is holding the position in trust for all the people of Ogun state.



The tweet read;



I am not an emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance. I am holding this position in trust for all the people of this state and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement I made between the Almighty God and myself.
