For a while now, popular rap artiste, Ruggedman, has made it a point of duty to preach against erring SARS officers. In fact, he is one of the few Nigerian celebrities championing the end SARS campaign. While most Nigerians have lauded his efforts, a few are not on the same page with him, one of those few include his colleague, Mo Cheddah. While reacting to Ruggedman’s call for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of Nigeria Police, Mo Cheddah asked Ruggedman to stop forcing his belief and cause on other entertainers. Although the rap artiste did not respond to her comment, Nigerians had a field day tongue-lashing Mo Cheddah for her comment. In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, Ruggedman was quick to state that he was shocked that a fellow Nigerian would make such a comment despite everything the SARS officers have done. He added that he had no issues with Mo Cheddah as he likened her to a kid. Ruggedman said, “I really would not want to take issues with anyone at this time because I am currently putting finishing touches to my Ruggedman’s Twentieth September Wears clothing line as I am set to unveil its first hoodie and new t-shirt designs. However, Mo Cheddah and I do not have a beef; why would I have a beef with a child? The first and only time I ever saw her was when she ran to my car somewhere in Maryland to tell me that she loves my songs and she is my fan. That was the first and only time I met her. I cannot have any issues with her. If I have issues with anyone who is fighting a good cause, I would not use that cause to display any negative thing. What she did is just unfortunate but she was really tongue-lashed by Nigerians and celebrities. I was very happy that celebrities also condemned what she said. She was very wrong. But like I told someone, her comment helped us to propagate the word the more. That is what I picked from the whole encounter and not what she said because that does not really matter to me.” He said that when he first saw her comment, the first thing that came to his mind was that she must have been ‘on something’. “When I saw Mo Cheddah’s reply to my call on SARS, the first thing that came to my mind was, ‘what is she on?’ Any well-meaning Nigerian would understand what I am saying. She said something like ‘I am trying to force my belief on people,’ what does she mean by my belief? I am not talking about religion, instead I am speaking for the innocent people that are being brutalised and not Ruggedman being brutalised. She also said something about me not forcing people to fight my cause. How is it my cause when it is other people that are being brutalised? I am actually fighting other people’s cause. The bottom line is that if she really did not have anything to say, she should have kept quiet, sadly for her, she was tongue-lashed by Nigerians and that is why I did not say anything about her comment. “Till now, I still don’t understand why she would make such a statement but I am not bothered because what I am fighting for is bigger than anybody’s comment. I am sure that when she saw the response from Nigerians, she knew that she had messed up but ego would not let her delete the comment. It is just like the video she later did where she was insulting people. She also talks on other sundry issues You recently released an album, ‘I’m not Afraid’. What is the idea behind the title? It simply means that I am not afraid of the powers that be. I am not afraid to express my commitment to God, I am not afraid to let the world know I stand with Christ. It’s about time we took the kingdom work more seriously. What is the album content like? The album is a bold step at bringing out one of my gifts, which is singing, and it is already on different online platforms. The 15-track album was released on March 25, 2018 by the Record Label, Kisil Entertainment Network. It has songs like Imela, I Cry to You, Authority, Chukwu Obioma, Awesome God and I’m Not Afraid, featuring Ifunanya. I will begin the first leg of my media tour in Lagos. With the release of your album, will you be putting movie aside? They are all art and entertainment, they marry each other, and they complement each other. For me, going into gospel music is a passion that has been subdued for too long and it’s about time I came out and used the talent for the purpose it was given. None will give way to each other but I hope and pray to use both well. How do you intend to push yourself with gospel music, especially considering that you don’t have a strong stand against secular music? Gospel is gospel. I am not competing with anyone; all I pray for and would work towards is to create my own space. Whether secular or gospel, we all have a message to deliver; how you deliver yours is what matters. How long do you intend to pursue music as a career? I wish for this to last as long as my breath can take me, hence I am taking it easy because I plan to stay here long enough and be able to give out a quality message while doing the work of my Father in heaven. Having been off the movie scene for a while, how do you think people will react to the new you? I have always been with the people and amongst the people. And I wouldn’t say I’ve been off the screen because I still do movies. But you can say that you haven’t been seeing me quite often. Right now, I am back full time, because that is my first love What kept you busy while you were off the movie scene? It’s been work, work, and work. For me, there is never a dull moment. I’m one who always wants to engage myself positively. I do not have time to show off or stories. I just work. Tell us about working as a public servant to the people of your state I grew up with working for the public because entertainment is for the public. For me, it wasn’t anything exextraordinaryIt was discharging my duties in a different form to the public and taking orders, putting in my best as I would every other thing I venture into. Why haven’t you been functional in movies like in the past? I never left the scene in the first place. Like most of your colleagues are doing, do you harbour any plan to become producer too? I am a producer already and I have produced some movies and will keep producing more. I have my own entertainment company. Was being typecast o one of the reasons you took a break? I don’t understand this, because I got my break in the industry with my first major work. There have been several reports on you being married. Is there any truth to those reports? We need to ask the rumour mongers because I am as confused as you are. It’s all rumours from idle people. It’s all lies. For me, my private life is my personal affairs. So whatever decision I take tomorrow, it’s totally my responsibility. If it turns sour, I face it alone and if it turns sweet, I face it. It’s my life. I do what makes me happy. I’ve been married on the internet more than three times! They first got me married in 2008, then they got me married again in 2011 and then they got me married again in 2014/2015. I’m beginning to ask, why do they like to get me married? If I was already married in 2008 and in 2011, why again should I be getting married in 2015? That means they were all lies. It’s all rumours. Some people will report this stuff like they know you when they only see you on TV. But there were reports that you got married to your colleague’s hubby? Which colleague? Because the last time I checked I am not married to anybody’s husband. It is believed that you got your political appointment because of your personal relationship with the governor. And you left because of his wife. How true is this? The appointment is like employment. You are employed to work, not to sit and eat. You work to put food on your table and also acquire more knowledge. An appointment isn’t an achievement that one would sit back and beat his chest to say I have arrived. What could be so special with ‘come and work’ that people will make so much fuss about it? We should focus our energy on more productive things. My boss is my boss, nothing more and the wife is like a mother to me. What is your reaction when you come across these stories? I don’t pay attention to things that don’t add value to me, so I barely notice them. What then is holding you back from taking the marital vows? It will happen in due time, and when the time comes it won’t be a hidden affair; you will all be invited. When the right man comes calling and if I’m satisfied within my soul that this is the man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with. I’ve worked hard as a young lady that, right now, I don’t want just any man but a man that will be there for me. A lot is being said about me, and I know. What would you say you achieved while serving as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Imo State? I would say more knowledge and a better understanding of how government works in Nigeria. Popular actress and comedienne, Helen Paul, has said that criticisms of hijab use in videos wouldn’t affect her creativity. Paul told Sunday Scoop, “The criticism doesn’t affect my creativity; rather, it promotes it. As an actor, you’re taught never to be afraid to take up any role. You just step into it and do it. If you have no qualms about issues of morality about certain roles for example, you shouldn’t be concerned about criticism. Criticism should rather encourage you to do better. And when you do things that get noticed by the world, it means that God has given you a voice and some sphere of influence and that’s a good thing.” Commenting on the criticisms that trailed the skit, Helen added, “I have been doing skits about religions (particularly Christianity and Islam which are the two leading religions in Nigeria) and other things that border on our lives as well as our differences and diversities. Doing these skits is a way of identifying with such groups of people. I have friends who are Christians and those that are Muslims. I have also handled events for both groups. I relate well with both sides. As a thespian, it’s easy for me to bring my experiences into acting and when I do that, it’s a way of identifying with the particular group to which the skit relates. So, it’s not in any way done to castigate of any people or practice. You will notice that in the skits, there is no castigation of any sort. It’s all for fun or excitement. It’s the same way you will see me using materials on the church (and the various denominations).” Speaking on the activities of her film academy, the actress said, “The Helen Paul Theater and Film Academy has trained several young men and women in various aspects of entertainment. Rapper Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, popularly known as Vector, has said the death of his father last year changed many things about him. Recall that in 2014, the rapper had a feud with his former record company, YSG Entertainment, which ended in court. For a year, he was not able to do music. In an encounter with Sunday Scoop, Vector admitted that he mismanaged information during his feud with the record company and he paid for it. He said, “To be honest with you, the only reason I was taken to court was because I was popular or becoming popular. I must have mismanaged information on my part as well. World's Heavyweight Champion, Anthony Joshua has been honoured with an OBE title in the Queen's Birthday Honours. In 2013, Joshua was rewarded with an MBE after winning an Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 Games. In a statement by British Olympic Association chief executive Bill Sweeney, he hailed the recognition given to Yarnold Mike Hay and Anthony Joshua. Entertainment lawyer, Akinyemi Ayinoluwa, on Friday condemned the seven-day ultimatum given to rapper Folarin Falana, aka Falz, by Muslims Rights Concern, to withdraw This is Nigeria video from circulation. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that MURIC in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, had ordered Falz to withdraw the video from circulation within seven days from yesterday (Thursday). According to Akintola, the video ridicules the Islamic religion because some girls were seen in the footage wearing hijab and dancing Shaku shaku. Falz’s latest track, This is Nigeria is an adaptation of the US performer Childish Gambino’s This is America, which has generated more than four million views on YouTube in just two weeks. Ayinoluwa said, “A careful and non-passionate scrutiny of Falz’s work reveals an impactful attempt at social commentary. “In the video, Nigeria’s many challenges were depicted in about three minutes. “It touched on the relevant and relatable ills citizens endure on a daily basis. “Amongst issues highlighted were issues of SARS (Police Brutality), Drug Abuse (Codeine), and corruption, the kidnap of the Chibok girls, Fulani herdsmen killings and fake pastors. “High school fees paid for university education at some of the Christian universities and others. “Are these issues not serially reported in the newspapers? “he said. The lawyer said that Akintola had refused to interpret Falz’s work of art objectively and his failure to understand satire or parody was blatant. “MURIC has not been able to censor Falz who has exercised his rights to freedom of expression. “This expression has not been targeted at any religion or singled out any tribe for hate. Instead, it has beamed its light on issues that need attention,’’ he said. Ayinoluwa said that if Akintola felt so strongly about Falz, he should channel his complaints to the right authorities or approach the court of law. NAN reports that Folarin Falana, a.k.a. Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, performer, and songwrite who came into limelight after he released his song titled “High Class. Falz later released his present studio collection titled “Wazup Guy” which included “Ello Bae”. Ello Bae won him a selection in the “Best Street Hop Artiste of The Year 2015” classification at the Headies Awards. However, the management of Falz in its reaction wrote on his twitter handle, @falzthebahdguy: “we have nothing to say. “We are not withdrawing the video neither are we commenting on their claims. “ If they (MURIC) have any grievances they can head to court and we will meet them there,” it said. In the song produced by Mr Lekki, Eedris accused Obasanjo of corruption and killing the people of Odi. Obasanjo and Eedris first had their face off in 2004 when the rapper released a song titled ‘Nigeria Jaga Jaga’. Eedris has however vowed to release Nigeria Jaga Jaga (Part 2) in the coming weeks.
