Science/TechnologyNigerian Engineer Invents Power-generating Device To End Blackout by mascot19(op): 12:13pm On Apr 02, 2017
- Obayagbona Emmanuel Imafidon revealed that he developed a power-generating device that can end blackout

- He said this has been certified by professors from the University of Nigeria

- The engineering graduate said he needed the support of the government to fully develop it

A Nigerian engineer, Obayagbona Emmanuel Imafidon, has revealed that he has invented a power-generating device that can solve the problem power outage in the country.

In an interview with Guardian, the graduate of Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu said he could generate power from thunder lightning and that he has been working on it since 2006.

He said: “I have been researching on generating constant power from thunder lightning. That is using a strike of thunder lightning to generate power that can serve Nigeria and Africa for five years and 30 days. That means that whenever thunder strike for once, we are sure of uninterrupted power for five years and thirty days.

“One may think it is not possible and if it is possible why the western world has not converted lightning to electricity, but what I have developed so far is a prototype. There are five chambers including the trapping zone which is made of lightning arrestor. There is the storage zone and the conversion zone, which convert static energy into current electricity and transmit the energy into transmission zone. The transmission zones will first of all step down the power from as high as five mega volts and there are five storage zones that have the capacity of storing over 25 mega volts of power.

“When it stores the 25 MV of power, the conversion zone takes one mega vote at a time, send signals to other sensory zones which shut down other sensory zones from discharging at the same time. Now the transmission zone of the power generating plant will step down the megavolt to whatever Nigerians need.

“For instance, Nigeria is generating 330,000 megavolts, but my device generate 5 million volts and then give Nigerians their 330 KV and still have about 4670, 000 megavolts left as reserve.

"Taking a look at the prototype, the first time I worked on it was March 10, 2006. I built this prototype with five zones- the power trapping zone, the annexing zone and in between the annexing zone, there is the sensory zone, conversion zone and transmission zone. In Nigeria, we are generating 330,000 volts. Now when thunder strikes, the trapping zone (which is made of trapping arrestor) will trap a maximum of 5 mega volts from 330mgv that comes from lightning.

"Lightning comes with 330 mega volts and the trapping arrestor here is capable of trapping five million megavolts, thereby allowing 330 megavolts to be wasted in the atmosphere for other lightning arrestors to trap and neutralise the energy to the ground through a process called earthling. If you look at most masts around, you will see something like a Y-metallic shape placed on top of a building, this is called lightning arrestor.

"The lightning arrestor is used to trap the power discharged from lightning and this comes with a lightning power of about 20 billion watts, while in Nigeria we are generating 2,600 megawatts of power. The voltage lightning comes along with 330 megavolts, while we are generating 330,000 megavolts. So you can see that there is a far cry between lightning energy and hydro electricity which the country relies on.

"The trapping zone will be built by the Russians, Germany or USA in order to capture a maximum of 5 mega volts and allow 330,000 megavolts to be wasted in the atmosphere for the trapping arrestor. Now, the five megavolts trapped by lightning will send the signal or energy to the annexing zone. You can see that we have so many trapping zones here and that is because you don’t know the direction lightning may come from. So, we can

During the 2015 presidential election the controversy emerged over the school leaving certificate of President Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the then opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

The then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had accused Buhari, a retired Major General, of not having a secondary school leaving certificate – the basic academic qualification for candidates competing to be president.

Finally, the military have found the certificate after the election.

Recently the 'Buhari certificate saga' took another turn when a witness in the corruption trial of Justice Adeniyi Ademola has alleged that the president gave the embattled judge N500,000 while his certificate controversy was pending before Mr Ademola.

NAIJ.com has collected five photos that prove that President Buhari is well-educated.

1. Buhari as a proper Katsina boy, attended the Katsina middle school (Daura & Maidua, 1948-1952) and later proceeded to the Katsina provincial secondary school (now Government college, Katsina) for his high education from 1956-1961.

From there, he went off to start his army education, like many boys of the north at that time.

2. To receive his military education Muhammadu went to Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot, United Kingdom (1962-1963). Generals Sani Abacha and Obasanjo also attended this academy. In Aldershot, Buhari was described as ‘an only pebble in the beach, a star in his calm and calculating disposition.’

3. In the year 1962, he joined the Nigerian Army and rose steadily through the ranks. He also attended Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) in 1962.

4. The incumbent president is also an alumnus of the Indian Defence Services Staff College in Wellington from where he graduated in 1973. Former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo also attended this college.

5. President Buhari also studied in the US Army War College (1979-1980) where he was described as “US Army War College (1979-1980) where he was described as “a gentleman, a soft-spoken soldier, who preserved the ethics of the profession almost as a Quarter-Master-General.

AgricultureRice Farmers Promise To Increase Production, Reduce Price by mascot19(op): 2:17pm On Dec 05, 2016
Rice farmers in Nigeria have promised that the country will produce double its usual production in 2017

- They blamed saboteurs for the hike in the price of rice

- They also vowed to support the government's diversification plan

Rice farmers in Nigeria have revealed that the price of rice will go down in 2017 and promised to work with the federal government to help with the diversification project.

Mr Aminu Goronyo who is the national president of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) gave this assurance on Monday, December 5.

Goronyo revealed that the association had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with some farm input suppliers in the country to so that supply of cheap fertilisers and pesticides to boost production.

He explained that some saboteurs were behind the hike in the price of rice so as to make the government of President Muhammadu Buhari difficult.

He said: “We are going to assist the FG to produce more than enough rice for this country in 2017.

“It is part of the plan that we must bring down the price of rice in this country

“There are several efforts that we are making to see that in no distant time, this price of rice will come down for Nigerians to have access to affordable milled rice.”

Gonroya said the association was working on mapping and registering rice farmers across the country and that this would help provide lad to rice farmers.

The president of the association promised that by 2017, the production of rice will double the seven million tonnes produced this year.

He said: “We have more than 4.5 million hectares of FADAMA land for rice production and each hectare has the capacity with a very good practice and management to produce five tonnes per hectare minimum.

“So, in one production cycle, we can produce 10 million metric tonnes of paddy rice and our consumption rate in this country is between 6.5 and seven million metric tonnes per annum.

“So if we can produce 10 million metric tonnes in one production cycle and we have three production cycles in a year, it means that we can feed this country and even export this rice that we produce.”

Politics#dasukigate: Dasuki Paid N400m Into Olisa Metuh’s Account by mascot19(op): 1:37pm On Jan 05, 2016
Detectives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) probing the $2.1 billion arms contracts have traced at least N400m to the account of a company allegedly linked with Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) spokesman Olisa Metuh.

The company, Destra Investment Limited had N6. 67 million as at November 24, 2014, but by last December, had a balance of N1.4billion.

According to a report by The Nation, EFCC investigators discovered that Destra Investment Limited was used to fund the PDP’s activities, including its 2015 campaign.

Some of the deposits in the account were: N400million from the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) on November 24th, 2014; N253million ( December 2nd and 4th, 2014) from Ibrahim Kabiru whose identity was yet to be confirmed; N91million on 2nd December 2014 from Capital Field Investment; and N92million on 3rd December 2014 from Etonye Oyintoneife.

A source in the commission said: “We will invite Metuh any moment from now for clarifications on some of these transactions in this firm, which he allegedly owns.

“By December 2015, the owner of Destra had a turnover of over N1.4billion. There is no document to show that the company executed any job for ONSA. All companies engaged by ONSA appeared before the initial Special Investigative Panel raised by the Presidency.

“Other documents indicated that Metuh was allegedly on a monthly unexplained stipend of N4million cash from ONSA.

“Out of the funds in Destra account, N25million was paid to Abba Dabo, a former Senior Special Assistant Political to former Vice President Namadi Sambo on the 16th of December 2014.

“Also, about N21,776,000 was remitted on 4th December 2014 to an account allegedly belonging to a former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih; N31.5million to his media aide and N50 million to Metuh/Kanayo on the same transaction date.

“We have also established a link between Capital Field Investment and SEI Societe d’equipments Internanaux-Niamey-Niger BP 11737 which was hired by ONSA to purchase €3,654,121million security vehicles for the Republic of Niger in October 2013 and April 2014.”

Reacting last night, Metuh told our correspondent: “Since they are doing a one-sided prosecution without invitation to me, they should continue and get their conviction by the media. Anytime I get invitation, I will honour it.

“I don’t know whether they are investigating the company I have interest in or my office as the National Publicity Secretary of PDP. Whichever one, my hands are very clean in this matter. I am ready to honour their invitation.

“I have not done anything unlawful. Whatever I have done in pursuance of my office, I can defend it anywhere, any time.”
