What is Ogboni? Let’s kick this off with Ogboni. It is often considered to be a secret society or even a cult, which emerged among the Yoruba people a long time ago. As it has always been a secret organisation. it is still unclear when exactly it was founded, but the earliest mentions date back to 1884. Ogboni performed judicial, political and religious functions. In their early days, they served as a link between the ancestors and the living; they worshipped the goddess Earth. Ogboni also used to be the highest court in Yorubaland. When they were most powerful, they had the ability to control the king and ‘remove’ him if necessary. When it comes to their different rituals, membership or structure of the organisation, most scientists are stumped. Ogboni lodge has always been shrouded in secrecy, and those who gave up its secrets often paid with their lives. Therefore, there is not much known about it. We do know, however, that both men and women were allowed to become members, but they could not tell anyone of their affiliation with Ogboni. It is also important to note that even though women were permitted to become members, the highest positions were occupied by older men. Even though Ogboni have existed for ages, with their peak of power being in the pre-colonial era, they are still relevant today. Now that we have figured this one out (as much as we could, given the circumstances), let’s move on to the slightly newer organisation. What is Reformed Ogboni Fraternity? Reformed Ogboni Fraternity, often referred to as ROF, can be considered an offspring of Ogboni. According to ROF’s Facebook page, it was founded in 1914, even though some sources claim it was 1918. Unlike their namesake, ROF do not consider themselves a secret or religious organisation, but they claim to be religious in character. They also are not affiliated to any political parties. The main objective of ROF is to create a network, which could promote its supporters economically and politically and support them in public functions. ROF also aims to uphold the law (both of the country and of God), promote chastity, charity and benevolence, and to provide help to people in distress regardless of their membership status, among other things. Both men and women can become members of ROF, as long as they love and revere God, abide the law and are honest. Men have to be at least 21 years of age, while women have to be at least 40, unless their husband is a member; then the age limit drops to 30. If a woman is married, she needs a permission from her husband to become a member. How are they different? Now, when it comes to the differences between the Ogboni Society and the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity in Nigeria, things get complicated due to the secretiveness of the older of the two. The most obvious difference between the two societies is the fact that the former was (and probably still is) a secret society, a cult, if you will, while the latter is nothing of the sort. ROF do not consider themselves to be a secret society, on the contrary, they seem to be quite transparent in most regards. However, as the Ogboni is very secretive, it is hard to compare it to ROF, as so little is known about it. From what we have been able to find, members of Ogboni could not dare to tell anyone about their membership, especially back in the day. It is said that those who have slipped up could expect a terrible death by poisoning. On the other hand, members of ROF are free to disclose their membership as they please; nobody is going to punish them about it. It is also interesting to note that children of ROF members do not automatically become members, whereas with Ogboni, if the child knew of their parent’s affiliation with the society, they often had no other choice but to become members as well. As for everything else, it seems like the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity took a big portion of their ideas and principles (as well as the name) from the original Ogboni and made them their own. Both groups are still active and relevant to this day, but, judging from the news, the younger organisation gets more coverage than its predecessor, even though it does not seem to have quite the same influence as the Ogboni once had. Both organisations interest people with their promises of success, power and financial rewards, even though neither of them outright state that. Taking into account all that we have said, it seems like the main differences between Ogboni and ROF are the age of the groups, their openness to the public and their relevance/position in the present day. We hope this might have helped you to figure out which one is which. |

If You Want Your Jeans To Last Longer Don't Wash Them, Do This Instead This really works apparently! @ Loic Djim James Gaughan · Apr 05, 2018 Jeans are absolutely amazing right? They're basically the go to thing to wear on your legs when you have to leave the house and can't get away with wearing pyjamas or sweatpants because that’s not ‘socially acceptable,’ whatever that means. The only real issue is that they fade over time in the wash. Now of course that’s not specific to jeans, it happens to your shirts too but you probably have way more shirts than pairs of jeans so they see the washing machine a lot more in their lifetime. Well apparently there’s a way around having your jeans looking faded that cleans them as well. And it involves your freezer. Yes your freezer. Not water, not soap or anything that you would normally associate with cleaning. That’s right, if you want your jeans to look good for a long time and be clean as well you should stick them in your freezer apparently. The cold in your freezer will kill any germs on your jeans without causing them to fade. Apparently the CEO of Levis Jeans, Chip Bergh, does this. And he isn’t the only one. Oh it’s no big thing... I don’t wash my jeans. Ever. Put them in the feezer instead. https:///EbhwZLRf0f — Adam Wylde (@AdamWylde) April 5, 2018 How often do you need to do this you ask? Apparently only a once a month! So instead of washing your jeans multiple times a month you could save a whole bunch of time doing your laundry if you just throw them in the freezer for about an hour once a month. So there you have it. You can save both your jeans - and your time - by skipping the washing machine and just moving the frozen peas aside to fit your jeans in the freezer. Source: CNN |
Who wrote the Qur'an? quora.com Apr 5, 2018 11:27 AM Ali Darudi Read a few books on early history of Islam 105w ago It depends on what exactly you mean by "author"ing, but.... First, a little bit about history of Quran: It has been claimed that Quran is the words of God whose verses been gradually (depending on the context going on in the society) recited to Prophet Mohammad via angels during prophecy years. Then, the prophet turned back to people and recited the verses as they were sent by God. Some people memorized them; some only parts of Quran and some all of it. Some people even wrote it down on pieces of paper. However, the prophet did not endorse any official complete written versions of Quran when he was alive (may be because having it memorized seemed enough for the time). After the prophet died (and some of the people who memorized Quran were killed in wars) and especially as the Islamic territory was getting much bigger, people felt the need to have full written versions of Quran. Then the first Islamic governor, caliph Abubakr, ordered to gather a full version of Quran. Several methods were used to verify that verses actually belong to Quran, such as: people could bring their written versions or two (well-known) Muslims could swear that. However, after a few years, the third caliph found some (pronunciation) differences and ordered to create a unique version of Quran (mostly similar to the one prepared by the first caliph), prepare lots copies, and destroy all other versions of Quran all over Islamic territories. Back to the question: in religion related questions, it is not easy to distinguish between historical and metaphysical perspectives. In this case, if one believes in Islam: God ahthored Quran, Mohammad recited to people, and then caliphs collected it as a book. If one does not believe in Islam: Mohammad authored Quran, and then caliphs collected it as a book. My main source was History of the Prophets and Kings which was written about 300 years after the death of Mohammad, which is one the earliest books on history of Islam. Muhammed Rafi Loves Design,Student of Islam 171w ago Quran didn't came in a day but in a span of 23 years. The Revelations Came to Prophet Muhammed (Pbuh),Whenever revelation came to Prophet Muhammed (Pbuh),The disciples made note of it. Muslims believe that the Quran is the Speech of God and not a book written by Muhammad (pbuh) himself. The information above provides evidence for the preservation of the Qur'an, but what suggests that it was actually the word of God? 1) Historical accounts document, and the Quran openly declares, that Muhammad (pbuh) was unlettered. You (O Muhammad) were not a reader of any Scripture before it, nor did you write (such a Scripture) with your right hand, for then those who follow falsehood might (have a right) to doubt it. [Quran, 29.48] 2) The Quran was revealed at a time when the Arabs excelled in oral poetry. Poetry competitions like todays rap competitions, were held in the marketplace. Muhammads (pbuh) recitation stunned its listeners for its beauty in Arabic. Many converted simply by listening to the deep acoustic rhythms, literary merit and wisdom of the Quranic verses. In contrast, the Arabic of 1400 years ago was restricted to words and expressions relevant to the simple life of desert men and it was impossible to express metaphysical ideas or scientific, religious and philosophical concepts. In fact the science of Arabic grammar was developed after the revelation of the Quran, using the Quran as a basis for devising its rules. It is difficult to find an explanation (other than revelation) that explains how a book existed that superseded, and also differed so greatly from any other Arabic literature. The challenge of the Quran to produce a chapter like its own has not been met to this day:- And if you are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad) then produce a Surah (chapter) of the like thereof, and call your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful. [Quran, 2:23] 3) The Quran is a highly comprehensive book containing Divine truths, metaphysics, religious beliefs and worship, prayer, law and morality. It is a book fully describing the other life, a book of psychology, sociology, epistemology, and history, and a book containing scientific facts and the principles of a utopian life. A testament to the Divine authenticity of the Quran is that such a comprehensive book, one that was revealed over a period of 23 years, does not have any contradictory points. Will they not then ponder on the Quran? If it had been from other than God they would have found therein much contradiction and incongruity. [Quran, 4.82] 4) Could Muhammad (pbuh) have been a liar or had motives for inventing the Quran? The early years of Muhammads (pbuh) mission were punctuated by persecutions and sorrow. His followers were brutally tortured, killed and forced to migrate. His clan was boycotted and he was stoned. His enemies even offered him wealth and kingship if he abandoned his call to the belief in One God. Instead, the Prophet (pbuh) lived a very austere life and never pursued any worldly gains like fame, power or wealth. Furthermore, the life of Muhammad (pbuh) was a practical embodiment of the Divine message and a study of his life (through the Hadith2) provides an appreciation of this fact. Even before he received the Prophethood, he was known in his society as Al-Ameen (The Trustworthy) and As-Sadiq (The Truthful). Both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars attest to his honesty and integrity 3 . 5) The Quran mentions things that were not known at the time. How can the existence of these verses be explained? The Quran has scientific descriptions only recently discovered by modern science and that could not have been known 1400 years ago. Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay); then we placed him (as a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed; then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of than clot We made a (foetus) lump; then We made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh;then We developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah,The Best to Create [Quran, 23:12-14). Professor Keith Moore, a prominent scientist of anatomy and embryology (University of Toronto, Canada) commented: It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Quran about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad (pbuh) from God, or 'Allah', because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Muhammad (pbuh) must have been a Messenger of Allah. The Quran describes the expansion of the universe: And it is we who have built the univrse with (Our creative) power; and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it. [Quran, 51:47]. It was not until 1925, when Edwin Hubble provided evidence of receding galaxies, that the expanding universe came to be accepted as a scientific fact. Professor Alfred Kroner, a world-famous geologist, explained: Thinking about many of these questions and thinking where Muhammad (pbuh) came from, he was after all a bedouin. I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years with very complicated and advanced technological methods that this is the case. The Quran describes geographical concepts that were proven after its revelation. For example, it was the common dogma 1400 years ago that the earth was flat, but the Quran described it as a sphere, compressed at each end (like an ostrich egg): And the earth moreover, He has made egg shaped4 [Quran 79:30]. In 1597, when Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world, the earth became known to be a sphere. What can explain the origin of the Quran? The life and character of the Prophet (pbuh) , the depth of the Quranic message, its appeal and relevance to both the spiritual and the mundane, all testify to the Divine origin of the Quran. These points compel us to admit our inability to provide an explanation that relies solely upon material causes. In a world starved of love and compassion, the Qurans universal message is the perfect antidote to the collective despair of the human condition. 1. pbuh stands for peace be upon him an invocation of respect 2. Hadith, the collection of recorded saying and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) 3. see 877-Why Islam brochure titled What they say about Muhammad (pbuh). 4. the Arabic word for egg here is dahaahaa, meaning ostrich egg. |
