******************** ''yeeeehhh'', Annie screamed as another slap hit her face. He removed his leather belt and for a moment she thought it was meant for her skin. Amidst a tragedy of painful thoughts, her heart gave a smile when the belt flew towards the far end of the tiled floor. He was not going to beat her but he was going to do it again. He was going to rape her again. This man who calls himself her husband. ******** One drenched evening, after a downpour earlier in the day, Annie was returning from the Local Government where she worked as a civil servant thanks to her sister who had brought her from the village and helped her secure the job. She now lived with her sister, Christie, and her husband. Her very tired face soon changed into one of confusion as she stared at the bags in front of the main entrance to 'their' house. They were her bags. Questions already forming in her mind were interrupted by the voice of her sister looking down from the balcony. ''Go and live with him oh! Go and live with that stupid fool who you have chosen to ignore our words for''. Then it became clear like the sky after the rains. She understood. She was being thrown out of 'their' house. It had not been easy living with her sister and her husband. Her sister's husband gave her hell so much that she even wondered maybe 'fire' and 'eternal damnation' were just metaphors in the bible for this! Maybe this was hell. This house. They had never liked Edward Francis at all. They never hid their feelings about him. He didn't have a job and was always moving from one little business to another. Annie knew Edward was intelligent and he was a graduate, but above all, she loved him. Now she had to choose between shelter and love. Her sister's house or Edward. Christie was always hard on Annie about the relationship and now she was putting her threats into action. Annie dropped to her knees and begged for several minutes after which she was back in the house. This was it! She chose what a normal person in her situation would have chosen, she thought. Tear drops raced down her cheeks as she picked up the last back and headed back inside. As she shut the door, she knew it had a metaphorical tingle to it. She had shut the door to her love. She had shut the door to her love. She had shut the door to her love. *************** ''You'd better stop crying!!!'' brought her back to reality. Now she is married to this beast, Thomas James, this wealthy fool who treats her like a slave, who demands whatever he wants and beats her when she could not or did not feel like giving it. Now Edward had got a job, a good job. Now she suffered amidst all the wealth she 'enjoyed'. All thanks to her sister, again. #*********************** .......TO BE CONTINUED(below) ***********************# *If you enjoyed this story and like the author's writing, support by voting for his other story ''Life Is Just Funny'' in the Etisalat Prize Competition!* http://etisalatprize.com/life-is-just-funny/ please, your votes matter alot and they will be very much appreciated. ****************** Eric Arthur /Nigeria Title: Life is Just Funny ****************** Tony winked at me as he got up to meet her. I just waved at her from where i sat and watched Tony walk up to her with a huge grin on his face. They exchanged small talk as they met and started walking towards me. As they got nearer, i noticed that they were speaking in their native dialect, which i hoped they would change as soon as they sat. While still standing, Tony continued talking and then looked at me, his body language suggesting that he was telling her about me. I just smiled and nodded as if I understood what they were saying. This is one of the many funny things people do. Just then i remembered Emeka, my friend back in Lagos, telling the story of how he broke his hand a few years ago. Everybody had laughed that day and even he was laughing. I then wondered that at the time he actually broke his hand, it wasn’t funny for him, but telling the story when he had healed was a different case entirely. No wonder comedians tell people about their poverty level before they started comedy and people laugh. Imagine somebody laughing at that same person at that time when he was actually suffering. America would have had to interfere in the kind of fight that would break out. ”David, meet Chidinma,” Tony finally said in English. ”Chidinma, this is David”. They both burst out laughing and I imagined what he must have told her about me in their native language. I just laughed with them. Afterall, what could I do? ***************** Please give this story your vote in the etisalatPrize fiction category!! I'll appreciate it alot. Bossforeva: You said i should help review urs. Well, all i can say is that ur Fiction is good, i think it tries to bring out one thing that's happens in the inner circle of life. Yes it's true, we find fun narrating our past mishaps and misfortunes to others and the reason for that is not definite. Hope that's what you are trying to communicate? Anyway i thinked you flawed in the sense that you made it so ambiguous for a Flash fiction thereby making the Literary appreciation not to cut accross all spheres of life.yes, thats part of what i tried to communicate... I actually tried to communicate two things... The 2nd being that if we find ourselves in any place, we actually try to act indifferent. David did not understand what Chidinma and Tony were saying, but he smiled like he actually did understand. Which brings a kind of mockery. They could actually be laughing at him in reality..lol. Anyway , thanks for the review. YOU CAN VOTE FOR MORE THAN ONE PERSON .... plsss vote here http://etisalatprize.com/life-is-just-funny/ |

Bossforeva: Well wateva ur fiction is good! U can even derail my thread further till you win the first prize i dnt really care afterall prizes are going to be awarded to the two runnerups. I know my fiction maybe too simple that even a day old can narrate. One thing stands sure of which i take solace in. That's this; my story just like the biblical parable "The Prodigal Son" has a very simple nature but with a defined moral story of which many short stories dn't have. When it comes to quality, i think i know how to hybridise the Figures of Speech to suit the need of the moment, i also know to customise fictions in my own way to get at a point. If you notice, people may think that i flawed by using "there" in that fiction instead of "their" not knowing that i used it intentionally to lay an emphasis.everybody has their different ways of passing their msgs. You chose to pass yours in your own way. What matters most is the appeal. Whether you win first place, second place or third...or whether you're not even in the top 3 should not matter that much. We all need to support ourselves and realize that its just a prize we're competing for. Make we support ourselves ooo... Thats the way forward. Btw ... Read my story and tell me what you think about it http://etisalatprize.com/life-is-just-funny/ |
ENIMONEY: Hahahaha!! Tanx jawe..this is why I hate all these voting shii..the best story might not always win.the person with the most votes does bt tanx for appreciating quality.abeg what do you think about my story? http://etisalatprize.com/life-is-just-funny/ |
