In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (And he of Egypt) the Chief Official, who was the treasurer of the king and the chief of his soldiers. His name was Potiphar (Qitfir) (who purchased him said unto his wife) Zelicha (Zulaykha): Receive him honourably. Perchance he may prove useful to us) in our farm (or we may adopt him as a son). This man bought Joseph for the price of 20 silver coins, a garment and a pair of sandals. (Thus We established Joseph) We gave him authority (in the land) of Egypt (that We might teach him the interpretation of events) the interpretation of dreams. (And Allah was predominant in his career) Allah is dominant in things destined; no one can repel His destined things, (but most of mankind) the people of Egypt (know not) nor believe; it is also said that this means: most do not know that Allah is dominant in the things that He destined. Q12 VERSE 21 Yusuf (as) is now clear of his jealous brothers. The merchants took him to Egypt and sold him to a minister of Egypt – the Aziz. How unerringly Allah’s plan works! To teach Yusuf (as) wisdom and power, he had to be tested and proved in righteousness, and advanced in Egypt, for the way to be prepared for Israel and his posterity to proclaim Allah’s truth to the world and to make possible the subsequent missions of Musa (as) and Mustafa Yusuf (as) had to be trained in seeing the realities behind events and visions. He was hated by his brothers and sold into slavery: they were sending him into the land of Egypt, where he was to rule men. His own visions of stars, sun and moon prostrating themselves before him, was no idle dream of a selfish soul, but the prefigurement of a power, which, used rightly, was to make his own honour an instrument of service to millions he had not seen, through men and women whose own power and dignity were sanctified through him. He was to understand the hidden meaning of what seemed futilities, blunderings, snare, evil plotting, love gone wrong, and power used tyrannically. He was to interpret truth to those whom it never would have reached otherwise. Prayer: Oh Allah! Guide me on the right path, the path of those who have received favour from you, not the path of those who have incurred your anger. Amin! In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (And there came a caravan) of travellers from Midian who were going to Egypt. They lost their way and went round and round until they passed by the land where the pit was. This land is called Dawthan, midway between Midian and Egypt, and there the caravan decided to have a break, (and they sent their water-drawer) each group of people sent their water-drawer. The pit in which Joseph was thrown was the lot of an Arab man from Midian called Malik Ibn Du'ar who was the nephew of the Prophet Shu'ayb, Allah give him peace. (He let down his pail (into the pit)) and Joseph got hold of it such that the water-drawer could not pull it back. When he looked down he saw a boy grabbing the pail of water and so he called his companions. (He said: Good luck!) “This is my good luck, O my companions!” His companions asked him: “what is it, O Malik?” He said: (Here is a youth) the most handsome of youths. They gathered and got Joseph out of the pit. (And they hid him as a treasure) they concealed from their people the fact that they found him in the pit, and instead informed them that the owners of the pit entrusted them to sell him in Egypt for them (and Allah was Aware of what they did) to Joseph, i.e. what the brothers of Joseph did to him; it is also said that this refers to the people of the caravan. Q12 VERSE 19 (And they sold him) the brothers of Malik Ibn Du'ar bought him (for a low price) by cheating in weight; it is also said that he was bought with false money; and it was also said that he was bought with unlawful money, (a number of silver coins) 20 silver coins; it is also said: 32 silver coins; (and they attached no value to him) they were reluctant to buy him because they did not need him; it is also said that the brothers of Joseph attached no importance to Joseph because they did not know his standing and stature with Allah,Exalted is He. It is also said that the people of the caravan attached no value to Joseph. Q12 VERSE 20 And so, the most precious of human lives in that age was sold into slavery. To different minds, the situation appeared different: (1) Yusuf (as) must have felt keenly the edge of his brothers’ treachery; (2) Yaqub (as) was lost in the sorrow of the loss of his beloved son; (3) The brothers were exulting in their plan of getting rid of the one whom they passionately hated; and (4) the merchants were gloating over their gains. Different strokes for different folks Neither the best of us nor the worst of us, knew where our destiny is leading us, how evil plots are defeated by our guardian – Allah, and goodness comes to its own in marvellous ways. We know only so much as our limited knowledge permits us. Prayer: Oh Allah! None has the right to be worshipped except you, Allah, the most great, much praise is for you. How perfect Allah is, Lord of the worlds. There is no might nor power except with you oh Allah. SOURCE: Arabel Publishing House, Tanwīr al-Miqbās min Tafsīr Ibn 'Abbās |
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (And they came with false blood on his shirt) they stained his shirt with the blood of a goat. (He said: Nay, but your minds have beguiled you into) they embellished to you to do (something) regarding the peril of Joseph and you did it. ((My course is) comely patience) I have only to be patient without showing any alarm. (And Allah it is whose help is to be sought) I seek the help of Allah (in that (predicament) which ye describe) to be patient for his death, as you say. But he did not believe them because in another occasion they said that Joseph was killed by thieves. Q12 VERSE 18 Yusuf (as) wore a garment of many colours, which was a special garment peculiar to him. If the brothers could produce it blood-stained before their father, they thought he would be convinced that Yusuf (as) had been killed by a wild beast. They slaughtered a sheep, according to Mujahid, As-Suddi and several other scholars, and stained Yusuf’s (as) shirt with its blood. They claimed that this was the shirt Yusuf (as) was wearing when the wolf devoured him, being stains with his blood. But, they forgot to tear the shirt, and this is why Allah’s Prophet Yaqub (as) did not believe them. Rather, he told them what he felt about what they said to him, thus refusing their false claim. Yaqub (as) saw that there had been some foul play, and he did not hesitate to say so. In effect, he said: “Ah me! The tale you tell may be good enough for you, who invented it! But what about me, your aged father? What is there left in life for me now, with my beloved son gone? And yet what can I do but hold my heart in patience and implore Allah’s assistance? I have faith, and I know that all that He does is for the best!” The righteous always see through the plots of the evil ones, but they always remain calm and focus on Allah. Yaqub (as) said, “I will firmly observe patience for this plot on which you agreed, until Allah relieves the distress with His aid and compassion.” Prayer: Oh Allah! The merciful, the beneficent, make today a successful day and tomorrow more successful than today, for your mercy is without limit. Amin. LET US PRAY Oh Allah! Knower of the unseen and the seen, creator of the heavens and the Earth, Lord of Sovereignty, we bear witness that none has the right to be worshiped except you. We take refuge in your from the evil of our soul and from the evil of the devil, and from committing wrong against our souls. Purify our intentions and count us among those who give freely for your sake. Oh Allah, I beg of Thee by saying that I bear witness, that verily Thou art Allah; Thou art unequaled and free from want – Who was neither born of anyone nor gave birth to anyone, nor is there anyone equal to Him; Thou art One, there being no partner with Thee; Thou art Most kind and Beneficent; the originator of the heavens and earth; O, You Majestic and Benevolent Lord, the everlasting, the sustainer, Most Merciful, My Lord is holy, unblemished, most high and most generous giver. Oh Allah, I seek refuge with your perfect words against the mischief of what was created, with the blessings of your name and what was created, with the blessings of your name ward off the harm of all things in the heavens and earth. Praise be to Allah; He is one and without any partner; for him is all rulership and praises and he hast power over everything. Oh Allah, by the power which thou wields over thy creation and Thy knowledge of unseen realities, keep me alive so long as it is in my best interest and grant me death when it is in my best interest; and I crave that I continue to fear Thee for you are ever present, and to speak with truth and sincerity both in moment of joy and anger, and I ask for the habit of thrift both in poverty and prosperity; and I ask for grace and happiness which do not die out; and I ask for my cheerfully submitting to Your decrees, grand happiness to my soul after death. Walaykum Salam Waramotullah Wabarakatu. My answer to your questions are based on my knowledge as God Almight knows best. The Quran is revealed in Arabic and sometimes it's difficult for one/two/three word to capture the meaning of an arabic word. Sometimes also, an Arabic word will mean more one, two, three, or more English words. farouk0403:By planets, you can take it to mean stars as that's the English translation by most scholars. You can also type "quran 12 verse 4" on google search. farouk0403:This is a new knowledge that you can enlighten us on. However, to me, people worshiping planets or naming planets with their gods name has nothing to do with Joseph's dream. I say this because his dream was interpreted as a revelation from Allah to mean.... Abdullah bin Abbas stated that the dream of Prophets are revelations from Allah. Scholars of Tafsir explained that in Yusuf’s (as) dream, the eleven stars represent his brothers, who were eleven, and the sun and the moon represent his father and mother. farouk0403:To be convinced or to believe is really left to you. In Islam, Faith involves: (1) Belief in Allah as the one and only God (2)Belief in angels, (3) Belief in the holy books, (3) Belief in the Prophets (5) Belief in the Day of Judgement; and (6) Belief in Predestination. Only you can convince yourself to believe in the contents of the Quran there are uncountable evidences to convince you As Salam Alaykum Wa rahmatullah Wa barakatuh |

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (And they came weeping to their father in the evening) after midday. [12:16] (Saying: O our father! We went racing one with another) and hunting, (and left Joseph by our things) to guard them, (and the wolf devoured him) as you said, (and thou believest not our sayings even when we speak the Truth). [12:17] Allah narrates to us the deceit that Yusuf’s (as) brothers resorted to, after they threw him to the bottom of the well. They went back to their father, during the darkness of the night, crying and showing sorrow and grief for losing Yusuf (as) They tried to lessen the impact of the grave news they were delivering. They said, “we know that you will not believe this news, even if you consider us truthful. So what about when you suspect that we are not truthful, especially since you feared that the wolf might devour Yusuf (as) and that is what happened?” therefore, they said, “you have reason not to believe us because of the strange coincidence and the amazing occurrence that happened to us.” The plotters were ready with their false tale for their father, but in order to make it appear plausible, they came sometime after sundown. This is symbolic. Evil thrives in darkness. Evil thrives in dark souls. They had to wait till nightfall before bringing their sorry story. The night is therefore not a time to sleep too deeply. It is a time to always pray against the evil machinations of the evil ones. Although the stress of daily living is great, and one tends to be exhausted that once one hits the bed, it’s goodnight until Fajr. We all need to struggle to wake up and pray at night. It’s for our own good. Prayer: Oh Allah! Keep us alive as Muslims and cause us to die as Muslims. Grant us knowledge of your deen and make us Your obedient servants. Teach us our rites of worship and make us depart this world in a state of submission. SOURCE: Arabel Publishing House, Tanwīr al-Miqbās min Tafsīr Ibn 'Abbās |

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (Then, when they led him off) after Jacob gave them permission to take him, (and were of one mind that they should place him in the depth of the pit) and they were unanimous about throwing him into the depth of the pit, (We inspired in him) We sent to him Gabriel to inform him; it is also said this means: We directly inspired him: (Thou wilt tell them) you will inform them, O Joseph, (of this deed of theirs) of this act of theirs (when they know (thee) not) when they do not realise that it is you, Joseph, until you inform them of your identity; it is also said that this means: they know not our inspiration to you. Q12 VS 15 Yusuf’s (as) brothers took him from his father. It was reported that Yaqub (as) kissed him and supplicated to Allah for him when he sent him with his brothers. But their brothers eaten by those twin deadly disease called hatred and jealousy conspired to harm and kill Yusuf (as). They threw him down to the bottom of a well, hoping he would drown to the bottom of a well, hoping he would drown, or some people will discover him, and take him away into a far land away from them, for they hated the very sight of him. However, Allah almighty was with Yusuf (as) in all his difficulties, sorrows and sufferings, as He is with all His servants who put their trust in Him. The poor lad was betrayed by his brothers, and left, perhaps to die or to be sold into slavery. But, his heart was undaunted, and his faith in his creator never wavered. Allah gave him an inkling of things that were to be – that his own rectitude and beauty of soul would land him on his feet because Allah sends His mercy and relief during times of distress to his steadfast servants who persevere with patience, people whose souls are not corrupted nor given to the devil during times of distress. These people believe firmly and strongly that because they have firm faith in Allah, there is light at the end of the tunnel. They know it’s always darkest before dawn. They thus suffer calmly, knowing it’s only a temporary phase, and that God will bring good out of every bad situation. Prayer: Oh Allah! Give my soul piety and my conscience purity. You are the Master of my soul and the Guardian of my conscience. SOURCE: Arabel Publishing House, Tanwīr al-Miqbās min Tafsīr Ibn 'Abbās |
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (He said) their father (Yaqub) said: (Lo! in truth it saddens me that ye should take him with you) such that I do not see him, (and I fear lest the wolf devour him) because he saw in his dream a wolf attacking Joseph (while ye are heedless of him) while you are busy with playing; it is also said that this means: while you are busy with your chores. Q. 12 VS 13 Allah narrates to us that his prophet Yaqub (as) said to his children in response to their request that he send Yusuf (as) with them to the desert to tend their cattle. He said that it was hard on him that he be separated from Yusuf (as) for the duration of their trip, until they came back. This demonstrates the deep love that Yaqub (as) had for his son, because he saw in Yusuf (as) great goodness and exalted qualities with regards to conduct and physical attractiveness associated with the rank of prophethood. Yaqub (as) did not know the precise plot, but he had strong misgivings. But how could he put off these brothers if they were driven to open hostility, they would be certain to cause even him harm – they were that desperate, and evil too. He must deal with them wisely and cautiously. He came up with different excuses, but the brothers had ready answers for their father, as evil people usually do. They can never be caught tongue tied. Ever so convincing, shaytan will put the "right" answer in their mouths. They said they would be eleven in the party, the ten strong and grown up men would have to perish before any wolf could touch the young lad Yusuf (as)! so they prevailed, as verbal arguments are apt to prevail, when events are weaving their web on quite another plan, which has nothing to do with verbal arguments. Prayer: Oh Allah! Let your guidance be my watchword, and not let the work of my hand stand against me on the day of account. (Amin) SOURCE: Arabel Publishing House, Tanwīr al-Miqbās min Tafsīr Ibn 'Abbās |
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (When they said) i.e. when the brothers of Joseph said to one another: (Verily Joseph and his brother) Benjamin (are dearer to our father) are more preferred by our father (than we are, many though we be) though we are ten in number. (Lo! our father is in plain aberration) our father is in manifest error regarding the love of Joseph and his preference over us. [Q12 V8] Then they said to one another: (Kill Joseph or cast him to some (other) land) in a pit, (so that your father's favour may be all for you) so that your father may turn entirely to you, (and (that) ye may afterward) after killing him (be righteous folk) repentant for killing him; it is also said that this means: your relationship with your father will improve. [Q12 V9] The ten brothers envied and hated their innocent younger brothers, Yusuf (as) and Binyamin. Yaqub (as) had the wisdom to see that his young and innocent sons needed protection because he perceived Yusuf’s (as) spiritual greatness. There seems to be some irony here, consistent with the cynical nature of these callous, worldly-wise brothers. The goodness of Yusuf (as) was a reproach to their own wickedness. Goodness was to them nothing but a name. Perhaps it only suggest hypocrisy to them because they are incapable of being good. So they plotted to get rid of Yusuf (as). In their mean hearts, they thought that would bring back their father’s love whole to them. But they valued that love only for what material good they could get out of it. They agreed to a particularly vicious crime that involved cutting the relation of the womb, undutiful treatment of parents and harshness towards the young and helpless. They say in irony, “let us first get rid of Yusuf (as). It will be time enough then to pretend to be “good” like him, or to repent of our crime after we have had all its benefits in material things!” This is very typical of wicked people. It is like someone on “substance-high”, who is oblivious of anything and would do crazy things. And after the effect of the drugs had worn off, he would ask himself, “what have I done?” The deed would however have been donw. Prayer: Oh Allah! The creator of the heavens and the earth, make us submissive to you: and make of our descendants a nation that will submit to You. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (He said) Jacob confided to Joseph, saying: (O my dear son!) if you see any other dream in the future (Tell not) do not inform (thy brethren of your vision, lest they plot a plot against thee) that may lead to your peril. (Lo! Satan is for man) for the children of Adam (an open foe) with manifest enmity, and he drives them to resentful envy. Q12 VERSE 5 Yaqub (Jacob) advised his son Yusuf (Joseph) not to relate his vision to his brothers. The vision indicated that his brothers would be subjugated to Yusuf’s (as) authority to such an extent that they would prostrate before him. Yaqub (as) feared that If Yusuf (as) narrated his vision to any of his brothers, they would envy him and conspire evil plots against him. Yusuf (as) was a mere lad of seventeen, but he was true, frank and righteous; and his father loved him dearly, while his half-brothers were jealous of him and hated him but, his destiny as pre-figured in the vision. Young Yusuf (as) was innocent, and did ot even know of his brothers’ hatred; but his father knew and warned him. In our innocence, we discuss our dreams and aspirations with “close” family members and friends, without knowing what they conceal in their hearts. Some people are dream killers, if you discuss your dream or plans with them, they inadvertently kill such for you. They don’t encourage you to actualize your dream simply because of jealousy and envy. They wonder “why couldn’t they have thought of the idea themselves?” and they find ways to kill the dream before it’s born. They pretend to be genuinely concerned, but their advice will be unworkable ones. Talk to only one being – your best friend – God Almighty. He will guide you and strengthen you to actualize your dream. Prayer: Oh Allah! Lord of the Universe, purify our source of wealth and make us not dependent on ungodly sources of income. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (When Joseph said unto his father: O my father! Lo! I saw in a dream) that I dreamt during the day (eleven planets) they came down from their orbits and prostrated themselves before me, a prostration of greeting these are his brothers who were eleven in number-(and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves unto me) he says: and I saw the sun and the moon coming down from their orbits and prostrated themselves before me, a prostration of greeting-these are his parents: Rachel and Jacob. Q12 VS 4 Allah says, “Mention to your people, O Mohammed, among the stories that you narrate to them, the story of Yusuf.” Yusuf (as) was one of the chosen ones of Allah. His father was Yaqub (as), son of Ishaq (as), the younger son of Ibraham (as) from where the Jews took their lineage; the elder son being Ismail (as), from whom the Arabs took their lineage. Ibrahim (as) may therefore be called, the father of the line of Semitic prophesy. Yaqub (as) had four wives. From three of them, he had ten sons. In his old age, he had from Rahil (Rachael), a very beautiful woman, two sons, Yusuf (as) and Binyamin. Abdullah bin Abbas stated that the dream of Prophets are revelations from Allah. Scholars of Tafsir explained that in Yusuf’s (as) dream, the eleven stars represent his brothers, who were eleven, and the sun and the moon represent his father and mother. Yusuf’s (as) vision became a reality fourty years later or as some say, eighty years. Allah knows best. Dreams are powerful, and if Yusuf (as) was to be the elect, he must understand and interpret signs and events aright. The imagination of the pure sees truths, which those not so endowed cannot understand. The dreams of the righteous prefigure great events, while the dreams of the futile are mere idle futilities. Even things that happen to us are often like dreams. PRAYER: Oh Allah! I beg of Thee accelerated prosperity, noble patience, ample sustenance and safety from all trials, and I beg of Thee perfect and lasting peace that I may be grateful for it. Beautiful Story of Yusuf (01) In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful (We narrate unto thee (Muhammad)) We clarify to you (the best of narratives) the best story of the news of Joseph and his brothers (in that We have inspired in you) with which We inspired through Gabriel (this Qur'an) in this Qur'an, (though aforetime) before Gabriel brought down the Qur'an to you (thou wast of the heedless) in relation to the event of Joseph and his brothers. Q12 VS 3 This is the beautiful story of Yusuf (as). This is the story of beautiful Yusuf (as). It is the story of the youngest but one of the twelve sons of the patriarch Yaqub (as). The story is called the most beautiful of stories for many reasons: (1) it is the most detailed of any in the Qur’an; (2) it is full of human vicissitudes, and has therefore deservedly appealed to men and women of all classes; (3) it paints in vivid colours, with their spiritual implications, the most varied aspects of life – the patriarch’s old age and the confidence between him and his little best-beloved son, the elder brothers’ jealousy of their younger brother, their plot and their father’s grief, the sale of the father’s darling into slavery for a miserable little price, carnal love contrasted with purity and chastity, false charges, prison, the interpretation of dreams, low life and high life, innocence raised to honour, the sweet “revenge” of forgiveness and benevolence, high matters of state and administration, humility in exaltation, filial love, and the beauty of piety and truth. This truly is the most beautiful of stories. The eloquence consists of so many meanings for those who can understand and wish to learn wisdom. Not only is Yusuf’s (as) story “beautiful” in that sense; Yusuf (as) himself was renowned for manly beauty: the women of Egypt called him a noble angel, and the beauty of his exterior form was a symbol of the beauty of his soul. PRAYER: Oh Allah! Inspire me with good conduct and save me from the evil of my selfishness. Oh Allah! Guide me to the doing of good deeds and abstain from bad deeds and give me the spirit to show mercy to the needy. |
As Salam Alaykum Wa rahmatullah Wa barakatuh This article is a Tafsir on Surah Yusuf (as). A beautiful story is that of Yusuf (as), the beloved son of Yaqub (as) His future greatness was prefigured in a vision, but his brothers were filled with envy and hate. The story of Yusuf (as) is a classic example of sibling rivalry gone too far, similar to the beginning of time when Kabil killed his brother Habil because of jealousy. Here, Yusuf’s (as) brothers schemed to kill him, but eventually sold him into slavery. There aer several lessons to be learnt from the story of Yusuf (as), but an important one if for parents to make it a key prayer point that Allah, Al Wadud – the loving, should put love of each other into the hearts of their children. Shytan is an open enemy, and there is nothing he won’t do to sow seeds of hatred in the hearts of man. Pray therefore, from a very young age that Allah should make your children friends unto each other. May his love continue to encompass us AMIN.
