Nigeria’s headline inflation has moved up to 31.70 percent in February up from 29.90% in January 2024, latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday has shown.

According to the NBS Consumer Price Index and Inflation Report for February, the hike represents a 1.80 percent increase from what was recorded in January.

“In February 2024, the headline inflation rate increased to 31.70% relative to the January 2024 headline inflation rate which was 29.90%,” the report read partly.

“Looking at the movement, the February 2024 headline inflation rate showed an increase of 1.80% points when compared to the January 2024 headline inflation rate.”

The data showed that on a year-on-year basis, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate was 9.79 percent points higher compared to the rate recorded in February 2023, which was 21.91%.

“This shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in the month of February 2024 when compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., February 2023),” the NBS said.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s food inflation rate in February was 37.92% on a year-on-year basis. This was 13.57% points higher compared to the rate recorded in February 2023 (24.35%), it said.

“The rise in food inflation on a year-on-year basis was caused by increases in prices of bread and cereals, potatoes, yam and other tubers, fish, oil and fat, meat, fruit, coffee, tea, and cocoa,” the report read.

Friday’s figures come amid a push by authorities to combat the rising cost of living in Nigeria. The removal of subsidy on petroleum and the floating of the naira were major triggers of the hike.

There have been protests in several parts of the country owing to that but the government is assuring Nigerians of tackling the challenges.

Despite the rising inflation rates, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Yemi Cardoso had earlier expressed optimism of a drop.

“Inflationary pressures are expected to decline in 2024 due to the CBN’s inflationary targeting policy aiming to rein in inflation to 21.4 per cent, aided by improved agricultural productivity and easy global supply chain pressures,” he told members of the House of Representatives in February.

“The Nigerian foreign exchange market is currently facing increased demand pressures causing a continuous decrease in the value of naira.”

In an effort to identify the most promising tech startups worldwide, the UK's Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is now accepting submissions from African tech businesses to compete in its Unicorn Kingdom: Pathfinder Awards (UKPA).

UKPA will be the greatest worldwide awards program for digital startups ever established by the UK Department for Business and Trade, building on the success of the UK's digital Rocketship Awards.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Office of the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos stated that applications are welcome from startup businesses hoping to expand internationally in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), connected and automated mobility (CAM), cyber security, and digital trade solutions.

The statement also quoted His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Africa John Humphrey, saying:

The Senate has suspended Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP – Bauchi Central) over his claim that the National Assembly padded the 2024 budget with a whooping sum of N3tn.

He was suspended at the plenary session held on Tuesday, March 12 at the Red Chamber.

A member of the Appropriation Committee in the Senate, Jimoh Ibrahim, first moved the motion for Ningi’s suspension for 12 months over allegations of criminal misinformation and breach of peace in the National Assembly and the country by extension.

However, other lawmakers like Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong moved for the amendment of the motion by Ibrahim. Ekpenyong, who is from Cross River South Senatorial District, prayed for the reduction of the suspension.

Indications have emerged that the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele moved billions of dollars from the country’s foreign reserves without the knowledge of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, dropped this bombshell in a recent interview.

He pointed out that the former president did not authorize the bulk of the expenditures from the foreign reserves, amounting to billions of dollars.

The spokesperson for the president mentioned that the majority of the apex bank’s operations are directly managed by the CBN governor, who also holds the position of chairman on the bank’s board of directors.

The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Ms. Hafsat Bakari as the Director, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

The confirmation took place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 after the consideration of the report of the Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes by Senator Emmanuel, Udende Memga (Benue North East).

The Matrix had earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu had approved the appointment of Ms. Bakari to serve as the Director/Chief Executive Officer of the NFIU last week, pending her confirmation by the Senate.

According to a statement by Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, Ms. Bakari is a lawyer and financial intelligence expert with years of experience in anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing, and counter-proliferation financing (AML/CFT/CPF).

He said before she was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the NFIU, she served as Deputy Director at the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit and was at different times the Head of the General Services Unit; Head of the Strategy and Reorientation Unit, and Head of the Board Secretariat of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“The President anticipates that Ms Bakare will bring her wealth of experience and expertise to full discharge in this critical role, especially given his administration’s war against illicit financial flows and other sharp practices currently prevalent in segments of the nation’s foreign exchange markets,” he said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has made a firm decision to close the growing exchange rate difference in an effort to address the enduring inefficiencies in the retail sector of Nigeria's foreign currency market.

Dr. Hassan Mahmud, the Director of Trade & Exchange Department, released a fresh circular on behalf of the CBN announcing the allocation of $20,000 to all qualified Bureau De Change (BDC) operators nationwide.

This project is a component of larger attempts to relieve pressures fueling the parallel market and establish a market-driven exchange rate for the Naira. This allocation will be sold at a rate of N1,301/$, reflecting the lower band rate of executed spot transactions at the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) as of the previous trading day, dated February 27, 2024. This strategy is anticipated to inject much-needed liquidity into the market and stabilise the Naira’s value.

Also, the circular outlines specific guidelines for the BDC operators, stipulating that all BDCs are permitted to sell foreign exchange to end-users at a margin not exceeding one percent (1%) above their purchase rate from the CBN. This measure is intended to prevent excessive mark-ups and protect consumers from price exploitation.



The circular reads: “The CBN has approved the sale of foreign exchange to eligible Bureau De Change (BDCs) to meet the demand for invisible transactions. The sum of $20,000 is to be sold to each BDC at the rate of N1,301/$- (representing the lower band rate of executed spot transactions at NAFEM for the previous trading day, as at today, 27th February 2024).

“All BDCs are allowed to sell to end-users at a margin NOT MORE THAN one percent (1%) above the purchase rate from CBN.

Eligible BDCs are mandated to deposit their Naira payments into designated CBN Foreign Currency Deposit Naira Accounts. They must also provide confirmation of payment along with other necessary documentation to facilitate disbursement at the appropriate CBN branches located in Abuja, Awka, Lagos, and Kano.
