EducationCourt Orders ASUU To Call Off Strike by Matrixliveng(op): 1:57pm On Sep 21, 2022
The National Industrial Court Of Nigeria (NICN) has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.

The government through its counsel, James Igwe prayed the court for an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

It would be recalled that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

Politics2023: Peter Obi “making Motion Without Movement” Can’t Get 25% Votes Across Nige by Matrixliveng(op): 6:17pm On Sep 20, 2022
The presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) Yabagi Sani has disclosed that his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, is making “a lot of motion without movement”, adding that the former Anambra State governor cannot win 25% of the votes in 24 states across the Federation in the 2023 presidential election.

Sani, who is also the ADP leader and chairman of the Inter-party Advisory Committee, the umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria, spoke on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm programme aired on Tuesday.

He dismissed Obi’s Labour Party as the Third Force that Nigerians desire to break away from the cyclical rotational governments of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All-Progressives Congress – the two parties that have held the reins at the centre since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. PDP was in government from 1999 to 2015 when the APC took over.

“It is not the Third Force that will bring us the change that we need but the fact that the makeup of these parties and what they represent today is a fiasco,” he said.

Sani also described as mere social media “euphoria” the growing support for Obi amongst youths.

“It is an expression of frustration by Nigerians against these two parties (APC and PDP) and this does not translate to victory for Peter Obi…Will Peter Obi be able to achieve 25% as required by the constitution across the board?

“When EndSARS happened, people were thinking that can translate it to become a political force that will effect a change but it fizzled.”

According to Section 34 of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of Elections, a presidential candidate can only be announced as the winner if he or she “has the majority of votes cast at the election; and has not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”

Asked whether Obi stands a chance to win the 2023 presidential poll, the ADP presidential candidate said, “I don’t think so if you situate it in our political structure, in our formula; what the constitution says you must have. Peter Obi cannot have it. Peter Obi can create the vibration, a lot of motion without movement; noisemaking but it can’t win an election.”

Pressing further, Sani said the only thing Peter Obi has going for him is because he is of Igbo extraction and there has been a clamour for a President from the South-East zone.

The ADP candidate questioned the integrity and the parameters of a poll by the Anap Foundation favouring Obi. “Social media is not equal to the polling unit. The euphoria is entertainment. Let’s have some entertainment,” he mocked.

Sani said his party is the main third force as it came third in the recent Osun State.... CONTINUE READING: https://matrixliveng.com/2023-peter-obi-making-motion-without-movement-cant-get-25-votes-across-nigeria-adp-presidential-candidate/
Foreign AffairsQueen Elizabeth II Goes Home In Blaze Of Glory by Matrixliveng(op): 6:59am On Sep 20, 2022
World Bid Adieu To Queen Elizabeth II, As New Era Begins
Reaction Trails How African Leaders Were Treated At Queens Funeral
The remains of Queen Elizabeth II were on Monday at a state funeral attended by world leaders lowered into the royal vault at St. George’s Chapel, in Windsor Castle, at the conclusion of her committal service.

The funeral lasted just under an hour, brought to an end by a bugler playing “The Last Post”, before two minutes of silence and the reworded national anthem, “God Save the King”.

The queen was buried alongside her father, King George VI, her mother Queen Elizabeth and sister Princess Margaret, reuniting in death the family who once called themselves “us four”

The coffin of her husband, Prince Philip, who died last year aged 99, was also transferred to lie alongside her.

The Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the British royal household, broke a rod known as the “wand of office” as the royal family and hundreds of mourners bid a final farewell to the late monarch.

Andrew Parker, who is the former head of Britain’s domestic secret service MI5, broke the white rod and placed it on the queen’s coffin. The ritual symbolizes the end of his service to the monarch.

Earlier David Conner, the Dean of Windsor, paid tribute to the queen, telling 800 mourners gathered at the chapel about the queen as “someone whose uncomplicated yet profound Christian faith bore so much fruit.”

He said: “In the midst of our rapidly changing and frequently troubled world, her calm and dignified presence has given us the confidence to face the future, as she did, with courage and with hope.”

In his funeral sermon, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby praised the CONTINUE READING: https://matrixliveng.com/queen-elizabeth-ii-goes-home-in-blaze-of-glory/
PoliticsSecurity Challenges: Peter Obi Failed In Anambra, He Can’t Fix Nigeria, says Oshi by Matrixliveng(op): 2:59am On Sep 19, 2022
Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, lacks the capacity to address the security challenges facing the country, Adams Oshiomhole, a two-term Edo State governor, has said.

The former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said this in Abuja on Sunday at the progressive young leaders summit organised by the party.

According to him, as serving governor in Anambra, Obi was overwhelmed by the nefarious activities of a dreaded gang, known as the Bakassi Boys.

Bakassi Boys was a vigilante group that was later accused of extrajudicial killings in the South East.

Oshiomhole said: “For those of you who are social media warriors, there are issues here that you need to speak to. Go to Google and look at the first six months of governor Obaino’s administration in Anambra state.

Jobs/VacanciesAgain, Industrial Court Adjourns Case Between FG, ASUU To Monday by Matrixliveng(op): 4:56pm On Sep 16, 2022
The National Industrial Court has again adjourned the suit filed by the Federal Government challenging the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to Monday, September 19 for a hearing of the interlocutory application of the Federal Government.

At the resumed sitting on Friday, counsel to the Federal Government, James Igwe, asked the court to give the suit an accelerated hearing due to the urgency of the matter to enable the students to return to school.

Igwe told the court that since the matter was already in court, it would be proper for the strike to be called off pending the determination of the suit.

Counsel to ASUU, Femi Falana, argued that the matter was adjourned to Friday for further mention and not for a hearing. He said he has been served with the Federal Government’s Interlocutory injunction.

Falana added that ASUU is currently meeting with stakeholders to ensure that this lingering crisis is resolved. He appealed to the Federal Government to cooperate with them to resolve the issue.

Justice Polycarp Hamman subsequently adjourned the suit to Monday, September 19, 2022.

Politics2023: More Knocks Greet ANAP Poll Which Gave Obi Lead In Presidential Race by Matrixliveng(op): 4:40pm On Sep 16, 2022
Major political parties in the country have kicked against the NOI poll which gave the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi the lead in next year’s election.

The All-Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and New Nigeria’s People Party (NNPP) have in separate reactions to the poll, dismissed it, saying it does not reflect the realities on the ground.

During his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign Daniel Bwala, questioned the techniques deployed for the exercise, claiming Obi is basking in the euphoria of hallucination.

Bwala argued that a “normal poll that will attract credibility will be a poll that will clearly release the sample size and the margin of error as the report is being released because the sample size and the margin of error will help in identifying whether the polling was actually carried out correctly or not.

“Then, you can further ask for the sampling. Was it done through a phone call? If it was done through a phone call, then the people who did not have phones were probably not part of the polling.

“You also go to the extent of demographics and the place where the polling was carried out. I know they said it was a random sampling. But then, because of the result, I’m tempted to believe that this polling was carried out online because Peter Obi has a number of people who are very active for him online much more than the other candidates.

“I will tell you why: There was an algorithm search and data analytics that was carried out that came up with the finding that 57.5 percent of people who follow Peter Obi and engage with him on social media do not live in Nigeria. In fact, the majority of whom are bots on Twitter — they are not real human beings.”

He said: “If you take away 57.5 percent of people who are active for him, who probably live abroad and they don’t have voter cards and they are likely not to come to vote, what it means is that Peter Obi is basking in the euphoria of hallucination, and this polling is a true reflection.”

For the APC, the most recent Anap poll is not a reflection of the Nigerian reality as it accused the organisers of using “dubious” statistics to “package” Obi to voters.

The statement by the Director, Media, and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Council Bayo Onanuga accused the NOI of turning its “political bias in an election period to fraudulent statistics”.

“The NOI has chosen the preferred candidate and has decided to use fake, dubious statistics to package him to the Nigerian voters,” Onanuga said in the statement.

“We know, as a matter of fact, the owners of NOI and where their political interest lies and wish to advise NOI to stop polluting the political system with irresponsible, unscientific, and biased polling so that we don’t expose the puppeteers pulling its strings.”

Aside from the APC, the NNPP also claimed that it is not disturbed by the poll, saying several similar exercises from the same organisation have failed in their projections.

“We are not hurt in any way. Absolutely, we are not hurt. In fact, I was contemplating not coming to this programme because coming here means we have made the people who promoted the poll achieve what they want to achieve,” the spokesperson of the NNPP Abdulmumin Jibrin said on Politics Today. “All they want to do is to create a public conversation so that we continue to talk about it; creating the image as if Obi is very much ahead.”

Jibrin accused Obi and the Labour Party of dividing the country, saying the former governor will only get votes in the southeast where he hails from.

“The only place Obi will demystify structure is in the southeastern part of the country. That is where whether he has a structure or no structure, he will make an impression because their party and its candidate are divisive elements. All they do is to divide Nigerians,” he maintained.

However, the LP says the poll shows Nigerians are ready for a new order of governance.

“It shows that Nigerians have come to terms with our reality that there has to be a change and a new order from the old because it is very obvious they are languishing in abject poverty,” the party’s spokesman Abayomi Arabambi said.

“There are no jobs for Nigerians. Schools are under lock and key due to executive rascality and malfeasance of the present administration.”

The NOI poll, commissioned by the Atedo N.A Peterside (ANAP Foundation) and released on Thursday, showed that the former Anambra governor is leading the race with 21 percent of the votes.

It described the presidential contest as a three-horse race and gave Obi an eight percent lead over the All-Progressives Congress (APC)’s candidate Bola Tinubu and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Atiku Abubakar who each got 13 percent of the votes to end up as joint second in the poll. The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Rabiu Kwankwaso was fourth with three percent of the votes.

The over seven months long industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may soon be over if statement credit to the President of the union, Emmanuel Osodeke is anything to go by.

Osodeke at a National Town Hall Meeting on tertiary education disclosed that ASUU is ready to suspend its ongoing strike if the Federal Government shows the willingness to accept its “minimum” demands.

The town hall meeting was tagged: ‘The Locked Gates of our Citadels – A National Emergency.

Speaking during the town hall meeting, the ASUU president said the suit will worsen the situation, adding that the union is ready to engage with the federal government.

“On all these issues, we have given the government a minimum that we can accept, but they have not responded on issues of revitalisation, earned allowance and on other issues that we have all discussed,” NAN quoted Osodeke as saying.

“We negotiated and agreed that they should sign. This is very simple and it will not take more than one day.

“On UTAS and IPPIS, we say ‘release the report of the test you did, let’s look at the one who came first, and take it as we agreed’.

“So, we have given them the minimum we want and we have to come down, and they can do it in one day if there is a will.

“If the government loves this country, these children, and their parents, then they should come to the table and let us resolve these issues in one day.

PoliticsCourt Orders INEC To Accept Akpabio As APC Senatorial Candidate by Matrixliveng(op): 1:39pm On Sep 15, 2022
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept Godswill Akpabio as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Akwa Ibom North/West senatorial district in 2023.

Recall that the electoral body had omitted the names of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs from its published lists, saying they did not participate in the primary elections.

Despite efforts by the ruling party to cede the tickets to Lawan and Akpabio, INEC, on July 9, insisted that Bashir Machina and Udom Ekpoudom remain the APC senatorial candidates for the districts.

However, Justice Emeka Nwite, in a judgment on Thursday, declared INEC’s position illegal.

According to the Judge, INEC had no reason to reject Akpabio since his name was sent to it by the APC as its candidate.

The spokesman for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign, Festus Keyamo, has challenged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi to name ten young people they groomed in politics.

Keyamo stated this during an interview with Naija News, stressing that Bola Tinubu has a good track record of youths’ inclusiveness in governance.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment said Tinubu’s appointment while he was Lagos Governor were mostly young people who have grown to become great men in political space today.

According to him, there is no controversy regarding Tinubu’s ability to identify with the talents of the youths and use them for critical positions.

He further advises the youths that there is no need to fear or join the ‘Japa’ syndrome because Asiwaju is concerned about the youth of the country.

PoliticsPDP Chieftain Reveals Why Ayu Should Not Resign by Matrixliveng(op): 6:04pm On Sep 12, 2022
Emmanuel Orker-Jev, the Senator representing Benue north-west, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be plunged into a “bigger crisis” if Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman, steps down.

The PDP senator spoke on Sunday when he featured on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television.

Ayu has been under pressure in the last few months, with demands for his resignation coming from different quarters, especially the camp of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state.

Amid the calls for his resignation, the national executive committee (NEC) of the party recently passed a confidence vote on him.

Commenting on the development, Orker-Jev said the calls for Ayu’s resignation should be “negotiated”.

“The biggest enemy of the PDP will be the PDP itself. Every day, I go to bed and wake up very unsatisfied with how things are going,” he said.

“Not to say that things will not be resolved, but it’s not going to be an easy thing. The resignation of the Board of Trustees chairman is one step to finding the solution to the problem.

“I am a lawyer and I have read the constitution of the party. If Ayu steps down today, what will happen? The deputy national chairman north will still take over if we are going by the constitution if we are not going by impunity. If the deputy chairman north steps down, then it will go to the deputy chairman south.

“Ayu will step down but it has to be negotiated in such a way that the party will not go into a deeper crisis. The best that can happen is that we call for a special national convention and even change the constitution of the party.”

PoliticsNational Assembly Moves To Bar Same Faith Tickets For Presidency by Matrixliveng(op): 12:58pm On Sep 05, 2022
The National Assembly is proposing an amendment to Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022 to prevent political parties from nominating candidates of the same religion as presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

This was made known by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi during a media briefing on Sunday in Abuja, noting that the proposed amendment seeks to promote unity and religious harmony in the country.

He showed a draft copy of the proposed legislation titled: ‘A Bill for an Act to amend the Electoral Act 2022 and for other matters connected thereto, 2022’ to journalists during the briefing.

Adeyemi, who is the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District and sponsor of the bill, explained that Section 84 of the Electoral Act would be amended by inserting a new subsection that “No political party shall nominate candidates of the same religion as Presidential candidate and Vice-Presidential candidate after this dispensation.

“The controversy which the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the APC has generated in the polity necessitated the move. To prevent future occurrences, a new sub-section is being proposed to Section 84 of the Electoral Act.

“Section 84 of the Principal Act will be amended by inserting a new subsection 3 which will state thus “No political party shall nominate candidates of the same religion as Presidential candidate and Vice Presidential candidate after the 2023 election.

“When this is accommodated, it will serve as a guide against any oversight such as this in the future as further occurrences will be deemed as a silent policy which is capable of bringing down the fabrics of the nation,” he said.

“Wide range consultations on the need for the amendment have been made with the leadership of the Senate and other colleagues.

“Though apprehensions raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) over same faith Presidential ticket are genuine, the broad-mindedness and pedigree of those in the race for Presidency, for now, would allay all fears being raised.

“Those in the race should be assessed based on their pedigrees and not their religious faith or even political party.

“Nigerians should look at the individual candidates contesting for the presidency in 2023 and not the political parties they belong to or religion they practice,” he said.

BusinessSee Nigeria’s Worst-performing Sectors In Q2 2022- NBS by Matrixliveng(op): 4:05am On Aug 30, 2022
A few days ago, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the Second Quarters Gross Domestic Products (GDP) result and against all odds, the Nigerian economy grew by 3.54 percent in the second quarter of 2022.

Growth in the three-month period marked the seventh consecutive quarterly expansion. It was driven by a 4.8% improvement in the non-oil sector, which makes up most of the economy, compared with a 6.1% increase from a year earlier.

The oil sector shrunk by 12% as oil production declined to 1.43 million barrels per day in the second quarter, compared with 1.49 million barrels in the previous three-month period, Adeniran said. Nigeria has been unable to meet its OPEC+ quota this year, partly because of crude theft.

PoliticsArmy Dismisses Two Soldiers Over Murder Of Yobe Cleric by Matrixliveng(op): 2:05am On Aug 28, 2022
The Nigerian army has dismissed two soldiers allegedly involved in the killing of Goni Aisami, an Islamic cleric in Yobe.
John Gabriel and Adamu Gideon, both lance corporals, were the two soldiers dismissed.

Ibrahim Osabo, the acting commander officer in charge of army’s 241 Reece battalion in Nguru, told journalists that a joint board of inquiry set up in collaboration with the police found the soldiers guilty.

The two soldiers, he said, were dismissed on a two-count charge of failure to perform duties and conduct prejudice to service discipline.

He also said the dismissed soldiers will be handed over to the police in Damaturu for prosecution.

Aisami was allegedly killed by Gabriel after the former offered him a ride.

The police had earlier paraded the two soldiers and three other persons over the alleged murder.

CrimeUS Court Confirms Hushpuppi’s Sentencing Date by Matrixliveng(op): 7:10pm On Aug 26, 2022
The United States Attorney’s Office for Central District of California, Los Angeles, says the September 21, 2022 sentence date for alleged international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, aka, Hushpuppi, remains unchanged.

The court’s Director of Media Relations, Thom Mrozek, made this known on Friday in response to an email inquiry by Channels Television.

Since Hushpuppi’s conviction last year for alleged $1.1m fraud, the court has moved his sentence date at least three times. Hushpuppi was initially scheduled for sentencing on February 14 but it was moved to July 11 before it was postponed for September 21 this year.

Asked exactly when 39-year-old Hushpuppi would be sentenced by the court, Mrozek said the suspect had long pleaded guilty last year and would be sentenced later this year. “Mr Abbas is currently scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge in Los Angeles on September 21,” he said.

Hushpuppi had entered a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to charges including money laundering, and wire fraud, amongst others brought against him by the court. According to court documents, he risks “20 years’ imprisonment; a 3-year period of supervised release; a fine of $500,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offence”.

He was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 alongside 12 others and extradited to the US for prosecution.
