The remaining four siblings of the late Nabeeha Al-Kadriyah have successfully regained their freedom, as reported by Daily Trust. This family had experienced a tragic abduction incident earlier in January, where the sisters and their father were taken captive. The abductors had initially set a ransom deadline, and unfortunately, the failure of the family to meet this demand resulted in the tragic killing of Nabeeha. Following the gruesome incident, the bandits callously increased the ransom from N60 million to N100 million, adding further threats to the remaining sisters' lives. However, as of the latest update filed at 12:30 am on Sunday, the girls have been liberated and safely returned to their Abuja residence, the very location where they were initially abducted. Security operatives played a crucial role in escorting the sisters back home, where they were warmly received by their family members. The four victims, namely Najeeba, a 500-level Quantity Surveying student, her younger sister Nadherah, a 300-level Zoology student, both from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, and their twin sisters, Habeeba and Haneesa, are now free from the clutches of their captors. Sherifdeen, the girls' uncle, confirmed this positive development in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Sunday morning, stating, "The girls' release was secured late Saturday." Despite the payment of the N100 million ransom, the bandits had kept the sisters in captivity for several days, keeping the family in suspense until the liberating events unfolded on Saturday night. In a statement signed by Sherifdeen Al-Kadriyah, the family thanked the Nigerians for standing by them during the trying and traumatic period. Hear him:“Words cannot express the immense gratitude and relief we feel at this moment. It is a true testament to the power of faith and the unwavering support and prayers from every one of you. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Allah for His mercy and guidance throughout this difficult time. READ MORE: https://matrixngr.com/2024/01/21/five-abducted-abuja-sisters-regain-freedom/ |

Tuesday, after the attorneys for the respondents and appellants adopted their briefs of argument, the court presided over by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun deferred the decisions until a date to be announced to the parties. The apex court also reserved judgement in the appeal filed by Major General Aminu Bande, the PDP governorship candidate in Kebbi State, challenging the election of Nasir Idris of the APC as the governor of the state. Last year, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Sule the winner of the March 18 governorship election. Sule polled 347, 209 votes to defeat his closest opponent, PDP’s Ombugadu who got 283, 016 votes. Dissatisfied with the election outcome, the PDP candidate approached the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, challenging INEC’s declaration of Sule as the winner of the poll. He complained to the tribunal that his actual votes were unjustifiably reduced. At the same time, Abdullahi Sule of the APC was increased to aid Sule to victory, particularly in the forms EC8Bs of Gayam and Chiroma Wards of Lafia Local Government Area. About seven months later, Ombugadu got judgement in his favour on October 2 as the tribunal nullified Sule’s election and declared him as the winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in the state. Delivering the judgment virtually, the Chairman of the tribunal Justice Ezekiel Ajayi declared Ombugadu of the PDP as the lawfully elected governor of Nasarawa State. Sule, who was displeased with the tribunal ruling, appealed the verdict at the Court of Appeal in Abuja. Ruling on the appeal on November 23, the appellate court reversed the sack of Gov Sule by the State Election Petitions Tribunal. The three-member panel led by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam held that the Tribunal was legally bound to act on witness statements filed along with the petition or front-loaded within 21 days stipulated by law. The appellate court held that the tribunal led by Ezekiel Ajayi acted in grave error in using witness statements on oath not front-loaded as required by law to arrive at the unjust conclusion of nullifying the election of the governor. www.matrixngr.com |

THE New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has retained its hold as the ruling party in Kano State as the Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Yusuf, who contested under the NNPP was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenged his victory in court. A five-member panel of justices on Friday, January 12, unanimously held that the lower court misunderstood the import of the purported deduction of 165,616 ballot papers in favour of Governor Yusuf. The lead judgment by Justice Inyang Okoro also held that the issue of Governor Yusuf’s membership was a pre-election matter. He said the finding that by Section 177(c) of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 134(1) of the Electoral Act, Governor Yusuf was not sponsored by the NNPP, was not a finding of the electoral tribunal but a mere observation that his name was not contained in the membership list “This court has consistently maintained that the issue of nomination or sponsorship of a candidate for an election is completely an exclusive prerogative of the political party,” he held. On Monday, Pope Francis demanded that surrogacy be outlawed worldwide, calling the practice of a woman bearing another person's child "deplorable." The 87-year-old pope called it a "grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child" in a New Year's address to diplomats at the Vatican. READ ALSO: https://matrixngr.com/2024/01/01/pope-speaks-on-plateau-killings/ In a speech dominated by calls for an end to conflicts around the world, the head of the worldwide Catholic Church said: “The path to peace calls for respect for life.” This began “with the life of the unborn child in the mother’s womb, which cannot be suppressed or turned into an object of trafficking”, he said. “In this regard, I deem deplorable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs. Consequently, I express my hope for an effort by the international community to prohibit this practice universally.” In June 2022, the pope condemned surrogacy as an “inhuman” practice. “Altruistic” surrogacy, whereby a woman gives birth to a baby on behalf of another woman or couple but no money changes hands, excluding for expenses, is legal in countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, Brazil and Colombia. Commercial surrogacy is permitted in some US states. www.matrixngr.com |
EFCC Moves In, To Begin Investigation Of Edu, Accomplices How Company Founded By Interior Minister Got N438m As Consultancy fee From Edu Outrage Continues As CSOs Call For Her Accomplices To Be Fished Out, Interior Minister On The Line In what will go down as one of the shortest stint as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, embattled Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu was suspended by President Bola Tinubu from his 48-man cabinet on Monday as the outrage surrounding a messy N585m disbursement scandal reverberates. READ ALSO: https://matrixngr.com/2024/01/07/edu-serap-asks-tinubu-to-probe-botched-payment-of-n585m-grant-to-private-account/ The Matrix reports that in a statement on Monday afternoon, presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, said his principal ordered the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, “to conduct a thorough investigation into all aspects of the financial transactions” involving the ministry and “one or more agencies thereunder”. Edu had stirred controversy when she approved that the sum of N585,198,500.00 be disbursed into a personal account. In a letter allegedly signed by the humanitarian minister, she instructed the Accountant General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer the sum to the account of one Oniyelu Bridget as grants for vulnerable groups in four states. READ ALSO: https://matrixngr.com/2024/01/06/nsipa-defends-betta-edu/ Madein confirmed that although her office received a request from the humanitarian ministry to make certain payments, her office did not act on it. This development stirred outrage from Civil Society Organisations like Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), and Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) to name a few. On Sunday, the Federal Government acknowledged the outrage and said the President had ordered a thorough probe of Edu’s ministry. On Monday, the President caved in to pressure and suspended Edu not without directing the EFCC Chairman “to conduct a thorough investigation into all aspects of the financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as one or more agencies thereunder”. The President also directed the suspended minister to hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry and “fully cooperate with the investigating authorities as they conduct their investigation”. READ ALSO: https://matrixngr.com/2024/01/06/tinubus-minister-betta-edu-admits-transfering-n585m-into-private-account/ “Furthermore, the President has tasked a panel that is headed by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance to, among other functions, conduct a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes with a view to conclusively reforming the relevant institutions and programmes in a determined bid to eliminate all institutional frailties for the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households and win back lost public confidence in the initiative.” In a case of when it rains, it pours, the scandal surrounding the Betta-Edu led ministry continues to unravel with another Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, currently in the line of fire after reports emerged that a company founded by him and his wife had gotten N438 million as "consultancy fees" from tEdu. But Olubunmi has denied being a signatory to the firm while clarifying that he resigned from the firm in 2019 and he is no longer a signatory to the said firm. READ ALSO: https://matrixngr.com/2023/12/20/fg-announces-50-reduction-in-public-transport-fare/ “I am not a signatory to the company,” he said on Monday during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. “As I’ve always said, I came into public office with a commitment to base my service on sincerity of purpose and openness. I believe that Nigerians don’t deserve to be kept in the dark in terms of public office operations.” He added: “And actually, I was shocked because the company in question was a company where I was a director. About five years ago, I had resigned from my directorship”. While admitting to founding the company alongside his wife, the minister said his resignation from the firm was owing to his political ambition. “I and my wife founded the company 15 years ago. Well, in 2019, when I got to the House of Representatives, when I won election precisely, I made a change,” he said. “I had resigned as director of the company to hold office.” The minister said he is only a shareholder of the company which is not in violation of the law. “Of course, and to the best of my knowledge, the public service rule does not prohibit public officers from being shareholders,” Olubunmi said. Meanwhile, CISLAC has asked the Federal Government and anti-graft agencies to fish out the alleged accomplices of Edu and her predecessor. READ ALSO: https://matrixngr.com/2023/11/05/fg-to-subsidise-adire-production-to-boost-local-economy-betta-edu/ “The fraud allegedly perpetrated by both the previous minister, Sadiya, and the current one, definitely, they worked with some people, where are those people? If we want to get to the root of this, we must get them investigated,” said CISLAC Executive Director Auwal Rafsanjani on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. Rafsanjani had said it was pathetic that a ministry that should be sympathetic to the citizens was caught in the web of alleged funds diversions. He had called on the President to carry out sweeping reforms within ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), stressing that diversions of funds weren’t restricted to the humanitarian ministry. www.matrixngr.com

The Matrix has gathered that Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation resigned his membership of the party based on ideological differences. You will recall that our flagbearer, Mr Peter Obi, myself and others left the PDP abruptly and had to look for a Special Purpose Vehicle in which to contest the 2023 Presidential Elections,” he wrote. This makes it exceedingly difficult for me to continue to stay in the Labour Party which is ideologically rooted in the left of the center. “I have been a rightist and a Liberal Democrat all my entire life. It is therefore this ideological conflict that makes me seek an exit so that I may continue my political activities with liberalism, sincerity and freedom. “I wish to thank you in particular and other members of the leadership of the party for the cordiality and respect accorded to me as the Director General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation.” It would be recalled that Okupe, in 2023, announced his withdrawal from the campaign of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. The presidential candidate of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally reacted to the incessant verbal attack he has suffered in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election coming up on February 25, 2023. Tinubu who spoke during an interview with BBC Africa shortly after his Chatham House outing disclosed that he is attracting the most attacks and arrows in the run-off to the 2023 polls because he is the frontrunner. He also described himself as the only qualified candidate for the country’s top seat in 2023. Tinubu said none of the top contenders has the track record of competing with him in the forthcoming polls. He said: “Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are not competent. They are not as competent as any other person out there. They've no track record, none of them is qualified except me.” He expressed optimism that next year’s polls will be free and fair. Tinubu said: “Things are going very well. I'm very, very confident that this election will be free and fair. I'm the frontrunner and that's why I'm getting many arrows. “My top priorities are security, and economic recovery to get accelerated development to get Nigerians employed and get inflation down. You know, monetary policy needs to be changed. Subsidy needs to be decided upon and then removed. “Insecurity in Nigeria is actually reduced and I will defend him (Buhari) for that. Then, 17 local and about 4 states where we had flags of foreign jihadists in Nigeria. That's no more, that's long gone. “To start chaos is easy, to bring normalcy and redecorate is more difficult. Here we are, Buhari has degraded but not completely eliminated ISWAP. We need mass recruitment of individuals in a volunteer army to really clean up. “I'm different. I am Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I have governed Lagos. I built a modern state that could be a country on its own. I've led an administration that's so prudent from N600 million internally generated revenue to N5 billion a month. “That's a record, nobody else can brag about that. I've treated and tamed the Atlantic Ocean surge in Nigeria that would have perished so many people in Lagos. The infrastructural renewal of Lagos is excellent. I have continuity in Lagos. Buhari has done his best, he's my leader in the party.’’ Speaking on his source of wealth, he said: “I have an example of Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world, he started from stock buying and brokerages. I inherited great real estate. I turned the values around. I'm not denying my wealth. “I was the most investigated, the most accused Governor in opposition up to, you know, for eight years, and up till 2007, and since I've left the office. I'm still there, I've not taken any government appointments. No government contracts. “I'm not getting any share of the revenue from Lagos. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund IMF have investigated the record in Lagos.” Source : https://matrixliveng.com/2023-tinubu-reveals-why-he-is-under-attack/ |
The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC) has arrested and detained popular Nigerian R&B singer Oladapo Oyebanji, better known by his stage name, D’banj. According to an exclusive report by Premium Times, the musician was arrested and detained on Tuesday after ICPC operatives closed in on him, forcing him to surrender himself at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, sources familiar with the matter said. D’banj, insiders said, had dodged numerous summonses for weeks, claiming to be overseas for scheduled concerts each time he was invited to appear for interrogation over fraud allegations. The pop star, a wealthy Nigerian celebrity, is accused of fraudulently diverting hundreds of naira earmarked by the Nigerian government for the N-Power project, an empowerment programme set up by the Nigerian government in 2016 to address youth unemployment and increase social development. Investigators allege that D’banj colluded with some compromised government officials to introduce ghost beneficiaries into the payroll of the scheme. The stipend paid to those beneficiaries is then paid to accounts allegedly linked to the pop star. After the musician failed to show up for interrogation despite multiple invitations, the ICPC moved to arrest him anywhere in Nigeria and abroad, forcing him to show up at the commission’s office on Tuesday. On arrival, D’banj was subjected to a prolonged interrogation session after which he was detained. His plea for administrative bail was rejected by officials who said the musician could not be trusted to attend his trial if released on bail. Our sources said the ICPC might approach the court on Wednesday for an extended remand order to enable the agency complete its investigation before charging the musician to court. The spokesperson for the ICPC, Azuka Ogugua, could not be reached to comment on this story. She is said to be attending a programme abroad. Being in detention, the musician too could not be reached for comment Source: https://matrixliveng.com/icpc-arrests-detains-nigerian-pop-star-dbanj-over-fraud/ |
