There is a reason why societies have laws and law enforcement or even community leaders to prevent the society from devolving into chaos. If someone shots your family member and kills the persons and if you are in a position to report to the authority but instead you kill the person. I am sure you know that you are most likely going to be charged with manslaughter?

If someone hits you once and in a bid to retaliate you knock them out cold and they sustain serious injury, I am sure you know how the case is going to pan out in court?

Given that this happened in the village, for the victim to protect his/herself and not give room for technical error report to the community body and let them handle it. Now, the table has turn and the community law will be used against the supposedly victim and the attacker is now the victim.

As a student in the west, I observed a situation where a drunk attacked someone in defending himself the boy plummeted the attacker. When police and ambulance arrived the drunk was taken to the hospital whereas the "victim" was arrested for causing bodily harm and serious injury.

The reason they usually ask people to calm down, not because you are weak or stupid but not to make a mistake that will put you on the other side of the conversation.

Your analogies aren't bad and they're logical as well but that doesn't change the fact that people react differently.......and also if we are to bring in the Nigeria factor into one of your analogies then OP will most likely know that instead of getting justice by reporting to the community authorities he might end up being demonize and blamed due to the kind of sentiments the Nigerian culture use when it comes to judging between a child and an elder or someone old enough to be his father.....the child can hardly be right against the elder and even if the elder spew out lies he's more likely to be believed compared to the child.

The elder shouldn't have assaulted OP and from my view OP should've either just used words of insults/warning to the man firstly instead of his first reaction being a retaliation.....but above all no one should excuse the elder behavior for any reason.
