EducationBREAKING: WAEC Postpones School WASSCE Over Covid-19 by maxinvile(op): 6:11pm On Mar 20, 2020
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has postponed the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, 2020 indefinitely.

In a statement, WAEC Nigeria’s Head of National Office, Mr. Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan, said the examination scheduled to begin April 6, 2020 in member countries, was postponed as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement reads in part: “The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria, nay, the West African sub-region, has decided to put on hold the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination

(WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2020, earlier scheduled to commence on April 6, 2020.

“This is as a result of the impact of the novel and deadly Corona Virus pandemic (COVID-19) and the serious implications it has for the conduct of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2020, coupled with the anxieties it has generated among the populace.

“This decision is a demonstration of the organisation’s concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease.

Areghan said the timetable for the examination had been suspended and would be “reviewed once the health situation improves.”

LASPOTECH’S Best Graduating Student Gets Sanwo-Olu's Automatic Job Offer

…Governor: ‘Polytechnic Certificates Not Inferior To University Degrees’

…Lagos Poly Graduates 16,315 At 27th Convocation

With a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.93 on a scale of 4.0, Ms Nkechi Alexandra Kingsley - the overall best graduating student of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) - gets an automatic employment offer to work in the school. Thanks to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who also offered the valedictorian a cash grant to hone her entrepreneurial skill.

Ms Kingsley, who finished from the Department of Chemical Engineering, was the cynosure of all eyes when she stepped out to receive the prizes from the Governor at the 27th convocation of the polytechnic held on Thursday at the Ikorodu campus.

A total of 16,315 students in combined sets of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic sessions, who completed their programmes in the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND), were graduated by the school, with 598 graduands finishing with distinction.

Also, 5,332 graduands finished with Upper Credit; 8,268 with Lower Credit and 2,117 got Pass.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu, who is the school’s Moderator, charged the graduands to see their periods of learning in the polytechnic as more than just an effort to obtain certificates. The Governor said the graduates must deploy their knowledge and skills to advance development and prosperity wherever they find themselves.

Sanwo-Olu said the technical skills received by the graduates must never be seen as a second fiddle to university education, stressing that the polytechnic certificates had equal value and can serve as alternative to university degrees.

He said: “On the education landscape, polytechnics occupy a very important position. They are seen as the bastions of technological innovation and development. As Nigeria strives to join the league of industrialised nations, we must develop industrial capacity, which also means that we must be able to offer to the world goods and services that are of greater economic value.

“Our polytechnics must be properly positioned for these opportunities. Technical education must never be seen as playing second fiddle to university education; both must be seen as equally-placed alternatives for young people on the journey to a productive future. My administration will not allow the Lagos State Polytechnic to lag behind in any way.

“Our vision is to catalyse the development of this polytechnic and make it a world-class tertiary institution that will produce graduates who know and are confident of their place in the demanding world of the 21st century.”

As the graduands were leaving the school to pursue different career paths, Sanwo-Olu charged them to prepare for opportunities that could accelerate their professional elevation after school, stressing that opportunities often hide in the midst of challenges and difficulties.

“Self-development is critical. Stay hungry for knowledge and never rest on your oars. Many of the things people complain about contain opportunities for enterprising people to make a difference,” the Governor said.

Sanwo-Olu also advised the graduands to imbibe positive attitude and show dedication in any area they find themselves, pointing out that nobody would go far in endeavour without character and integrity, which he described as ingredients for a successful career.

He said: “I congratulate you on the successful completion of your learning. You have paid your dues and are now being rewarded with certificates that attest to what you have gained here in terms of knowledge and skills.

“In Lagos State, we will continue to invest heavily in the provision of affordable and quality education in all of our public schools. Let me remind you all that education is one of the cardinal planks of our vision, known as the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda.”

To strengthen the capacity of the school management in administration, Sanwo-Olu announced that his Government would build a befitting administrative block and a mini fire station in LASPOTECH.

The Governor added there would be a replica of Public Private Partnership (PPP)-driven accommodation programme in LASPOTECH as currently being done at Lagos State University (LASU).

The rector, Mr. Samuel Sogunro, praised the Governor for demonstrating “unflinching support” for the school in its journey to attain excellence.

Sogunro said the timely release of the school’s subvention and continuous investment in infrastructure by successive administrations in the State had increased its Webometrics ranking as the 5th Best Polytechnic in the country. He added that efforts were being made to move the polytechnic up in the ranking.

HealthPangolins Are Possible Coronavirus Hosts, Chinese Scientists Say by maxinvile(op): 7:24pm On Feb 09, 2020
Pangolins are possible hosts of coronavirus, a study led by South China Agricultural University has found.

Experts believe the outbreak originated at wild animal markets in Wuhan, China. After analyzing more than 1,000 samples, scientists found that the genome sequence of the virus in pangolins was 99% identical to that from infected people. That means pangolins are the most likely intermediate host of coronavirus, Liu Yahong, president of the university, said, according to state media.

Pangolins, which look like scaly anteaters, are considered a delicacy in China and other countries, and pangolin scales are used in traditional medicine.

CrimePeter Opogwu's Gruesome Murder By Soldiers : Igede Youths Plan Mother Of All by maxinvile(op): 12:54pm On Feb 03, 2020
OPOGWU'S GRUESOME MURDER BY SOLDIERS: IGEDE YOUTHS PLAN MOTHER OF ALL PROTESTS

*Threaten legal action
*Assemble over 50 human rights lawyers

By James Ibechi
…Going wherever the evidence leads

Igede National Youth Council (INYC) the apex umbrella body for all Igede youths in the country and in the Diaspora has planned what it described as a Mother of all Protests over the gruesome murder of Peter Opogwu by Nigerian military men.
The organization has however demanded the Army to first accept remorsefully full responsibility, tender apology to the family of the deceased and INYC whose member its soldiers murdered penultimate week for keeping silent five days after the barbaric incident.
In a statement issued in Makurdi on Monday and signed for the leadership of the organization by Comr. Andyson Iji Egbodo acclaimed winner of the recently conducted poll to elect National President of the group and other officials, it said it would match to “The Defender of Benue Valley” to hand him a protest letter to be delivered to President Mohammadu Buhari, the Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic.
Comrade Egbodo stated that if the Army through the office of the Chief of Army Staff fails to tender the public apology over the killing of Opogwu, INYC would be left with no option but to sue the Army, adding that there is no part of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 as amended to date that empowers any security agent to kill innocent citizens.
The fire brand youth leader says INYC has not only mobilized 50 lawyers but also already in touch with seven civil society and human rights organizations across the country over the murder of Opogwu.
According to an eyewitness account, the murder of Opogwu indigene of Obi LGA of Benue State occurred on Sunday evening at the Wolf Mess when the deceased's car refused to start and then he removed that of a generator around to start his car and returned it immediately.
It was gathered that soldiers of 7 Division of Nigerian Army attached to Wolf Officer Mess, GRA, Maiduguri, Borno State, then beat and killed Opowgu, after falsely accusing him of stealing the generator battery.
The soldiers brutalized and left him to die. The victim eventually died last Wednesday morning at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Three soldiers are said to have been arrested over the incident and police have confirmed the murder and investigation is said to be ongoing.

CultureThe Benin-owan, (edo State ) People Of Igede Clan( Ora Clan In Benue State) by maxinvile(op): 8:13pm On Nov 16, 2019
THE BENIN-OWAN, (Edo state ) PEOPLE OF IGEDE CLAN( Ora clan in Benue State)

One of the areas the old Edo empire lost out is the indiscriminate banishing of Edo people for little infractions. This harsh punishment was meted out even to persons who cooked and ate food during Oba’s mourning period,( you all know the old Owan story of the Oba versus Odihi and Aigbofelomon). These banished people later found Kingdoms and communities that flourished very well. This unproductive habit remain as a corrective tool even amongst the Edo people of Owan. We banished many prominent sons of Owan for flimsy excuses and these Owan people founded communities elsewhere that have become bigger and even more prosperous than their original homes. The Emai community banished Enwan people for skipping a communal task and that agegrade went to the northernmost part of Edo and settled with Akokoedo people. We shall discuss this later on but let us talk about another Owan people that are now flourishing in far away Benue State.

Ohia is regarded as the most senior clan of Ora clan and today it is the smallest. One of the reasons it is not as big today has a story of how it’s most prosperous citizen and his quarter were evicted from Ohia by Ora community over chieftaincy squabbles. The story is that,Shortly after the Ora community is fully established,a great Ohia man made a serious case for himself and Ohia people to be the Ruling house of the entire Oras and rejected rotational arrangement because Ohia is senior. That man’s name is Agba. The entire Ora community ( minus Ohia) led by Evbiobe rejected this proposal and to finally stifle future claims like this from Ohia people, they banished their leader,Agba. Agba journeyed far to Benue state through Nsukka in Enugu state. Here he founded the 3rd largest ethnic group in Benue state today known as Igede. This historical event in Igede history is commonly recounted in song and drama, for instance the record and drama piece “Ego ny’Igede”.

Igede has 14 major clans of its own. Some are; Ada,Anchim,Oye,kpaỌ,Owo,Ibilla,Ainu,Itoọ , Uwokwu,Idelle,Itakpa and Oju respectively.Oral tradition on Igede culture reveals rich cultural heritage. Cultural norms such as Igede Gerontocracy system like we have in Owan, oath taking, and punishment for breaking of bonds of competent relationship werepracticed with absolute sense of faith and devotion. In addition, they have pristine culture ofregarding kinship, social organization, religions and worldview, land tenure system, marriage, child naming, circumcision, divorce, widowhood and levirate marriage, crafts, traditional herbalpractices, taboos, totems, rites of passage among others. The advent of Christianity coupled withglobalisation marked the beginning of dramatic changes in the people’ identities and the symbolsof those identities with resultant alien practices and lifestyles.

The Igede are predominantly farmers cultivating maize, cassava, groundnut and yams. Igede is home of the popular Igede-Agba festival, a colourful annual celebration that marks the yam harvest season in September. Much importance is attached to yam amongst the Igede people and other Biafran cultures not only because it is the first crop to be harvested, but also the most important and palatable crop. The crop can be eaten in different forms – roasted, boiled, pounded, floured, fried, etc. The New Yam Festival is therefore a celebration depicting the prominence of yam in the social-cultural life of the Igede people and all Agba Descendants such as the Obudu and Bekwara people. The emphasis being placed on yam by the Agba sons is not out of place as research has shown that yam has a lot of health and economic benefits. Yam, according to scholars, provides 200 calories of energy per capita daily. The demand for yam is higher than the supply of the crop because it occupies a very prestigious social and religious status in the country and so can be regarded as the “KING OF ALL CROPS”

Besides, the Igede Agba Festival serves as the most important day to a typical Igede man and Agba Descendants as it is the only celebration that creates a sense of nationalism in the descendants of Agba. It is the best platform through which families show love, sense of belonging, unity, communalism and harmonious living. No traditional ceremony among the Agba sons and daughters occupies a more prominent position than the Igede Agba – it is not intended at appeasing any deity (such as “Apang”), but meant to celebrate hard work, dignity of labour and magnanimity as well as elicit resilient spirit which spur farmers to putting in more effort in the next planting season.

Today in Benue state, the Igede people have two local councils,Oju and Obi local government areas of Nigeria, where 2006 population figures stand at an estimated 267,198 people. It is a land of beautiful women and hardworking men. The title of their traditional ruler is ‘ Agutu’. If these our brothers are still with us,nobody will be calling Owan minority in Edo state. It is not too late to develop closer ties with this Owan community in Benue. They know we are their brothers. I have a friend and colleague,Barrister Abari by name. He was the first to broach the fact to me that I am his brother from Edo. You see, they know. Anyways,I will marry an Igede girl very soon as my 2nd wife...( laughs)
