Celebrities / MUST READ: 17 Kinds Of People You Will Meet At Shoprite by mayoviral(m): 10:24am On Jan 14, 2016
Shoprite is the largest supermarket in Africa. After one of my many visits, i decided to write about the kinds of people you'll see at the mart.

1. The One Who Buys the Most Useless Items: You know that product you pass and think, “Who on Earth would buy this?” Well, this person buys all of those things.

2. The Parent Who’s Buying Their College Kid a Bunch of Stuff While They’re Home: From junk food to hygiene products, this college student is doing the best they can to get everything they need for the next semester while they’re home so they can spend their money on booze.

3. The College Kid Who Is Running Errands for Parents: Maybe they made an agreement: sure, we’ll buy you all this stuff while you’re home, but you have to run all of our errands. Not a bad deal, but this kid is always stressed, and crossing out a handwritten list that they can barely read.

4. The One With the Butt Crack: Even when they don’t have to bend over, they do. And you can basically see their entire butt. You honestly feel like this person is following you.

5. The Acquaintance You Try to Hide From: You’re minding your own business and have shopping to get done, and that chatty acquaintance you know through a friend of a friend of a friend who will totally remember you is there. You spend your entire shopping trip trying to hide from them, because you don’t have time to chat with someone whose name you can’t remember right now.

6. The One Talking Loudly On Their Cell Phone: In a matter of seconds in aisle 10, you’ve learned everything you need to know about this customer and more. You’d tell them to shut up, but you already know that they’re in a dispute with the court for assaulting someone at Shoprite the last time they were here.

7. The Out of Control Kids: They want everything, and they’re not afraid to ask their parents for it. And they’re less afraid of having a tantrum when they’re told that they can’t have the toy or treats they want.

8. The One With the Coupons: Bless you if you get stuck in line behind this one. They argue every coupon, have to speak with three different managers, and end up leaving without buying anything because they couldn’t get all the discounts they wanted.

9. The Man Who Does’t Really Know How to Shop: There’s always that man, probably a dad, strolling around the store like he’s never been there before. He’s constantly looking for an employee, but he doesn’t even know what they look like because he’s never been to Shoprite until today.

10. The Teens Who Are Obviously Shoplifting:They wander around the store, whispering to each other, laughing. Meanwhile, the belly under their shirts get bigger and more oddly shaped the longer they’re there.

11. The One With the Stuffed Shopping Cart: This shopping cart is so full that you wonder why it hasn’t collapsed. Also, you try to stay as far away from this customer as possible, because you don’t really want to help them if anything does fall. You also wonder how much they’re gonna pay.

12. In a rush customer: Some people come for shopping in a hurry. They literally run from one counter to another, picking stuff and without any trolley. They look for the shortest queue at the time of billing.

13. Couple:You can easily find couples shopping in a store. They are like one is saying the particular product is in need but the partner says there is no need. They argue more than they do shopping.

14. Confused Shopper: Some people look so confused while shopping. Firstly, they pick some products, and then they keep them back, a few minutes later they again make up mind to buy those products.

15. Those that are there to take photos: They push the shopping trolley snapping pictures and at the end leave empty handed.

16. The babes/guys finder: This is the most common. The sole aim of these both sex is to find a date, spouse,or sex-mate. They'll seem to disappear after accomplishing their mission. Some will fake a call just to get out.

17: The Complaining Customer: These are the types of people you find arguing in every shop you find them and they are so rude, you hear them talk across the hall. It’s either they think the item is fake, it’s over priced, they are not being treated fairly etc. They always seems to be full of themselves and these are the people you hear them say, “Do you know who I am?”
What type of person do you always run into at Shoprite? Serve it to us in the comments!

Another Mayoviral piece.

Nairaland / General / Must Read: History Of Valentine’s Day by mayoviral(m): 12:08pm On Feb 14, 2015
Every February 14, across Nigeria and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the history of this centuries-old holiday, from ancient Roman rituals to the customs of Victorian England.

THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

ORIGINS OF VALENTINE’S DAY: A PAGAN FESTIVAL IN FEBRUARY

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

VALENTINE’S DAY: A DAY OF ROMANCE

Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”–at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.
Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. (The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.) Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.
TYPICAL VALENTINE’S DAY GREETINGS

In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.
Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

Nairaland / General / How Obasanjo Almost Killed Me In UNILAG - Pastor Tunde Bakare by mayoviral(m): 12:26am On Nov 19, 2014
Pastor Bakare who also accused Obasanjo of causing Nigeria's problems, made this statement on Monday at the anniversary of the International Day of Students in Abeokuta.
Delivering a speech titled “Good Governance: Sustainability of Democracy, the Role of Students in the Forthcoming General Election”, Bakare traced the history of student unionisn from the colonial days, saying the body was dealt a fatal blow in 1978.
“General Olusegun Obasanjo’s government ordered the brutal suppression of that protest. Live bullets were unleashed on protesting students.
“As we proceeded outside UNILAG’s main gate, I narrowly escaped death as Akintunde Ojo, the young man standing just beside me, was gunned down.
“Through that incident, Obasanjo carved his name on marble as a villain of democracy. “I did not mince words when opportunity presented itself in November of 1978 when I pointed to his face, ‘This government possesses power without compassion, might without morality and strength without sight’,” he said.
Leadership reports that, Bakare further stated that student unionism had been hijacked by never do wells, stressing that the height of this fall was the conferment of the title Defender of Democracy on Obasanjo in 2005 by student body.
“Nevertheless, student unionism in Nigeria today is in a sorry state. Not only has it fallen from its pinnacle of intellectual doggedness and ideological astuteness, it has lost its activist steam and has become a mere appendage of ruling political parties and a tool in the hands of corrupt politicians.
“The apotheosis of the perfidious degeneration of student unionism occurred in 2005 when NANS decorated General Obasanjo as a ‘Defender of Democracy’; yes the same Obasanjo who masterminded the brutal repression of unarmed students who were merely registering their displeasure over hike in fees,” he further pointed out.
Bakare also condemned the role played by student leaders in the botched third term bid of the former president.
“Worse still, when progressives rose up against Obasanjo’s third term agenda in 2005, NANS shamelessly campaigned for Obasanjo’s life presidency agenda.
“In essence, Obasanjo killed student unionism in Nigeria. As a military head of state, he killed NUNS by brutal repression and proscription.
“When Obasanjo returned as civilian president, he killed NANS and made it a shadow of itself, doing so this time by corrupting the body.
Upon the foundation of corruption of student unionism laid by Obasanjo, NANS has become weak and factionalised in subsequent administrations,” he averred.
He then called on the student body to embark on journey of rebirth to return to the good old days of student activism.
“You must rid yourselves of cultism and other self-destructive tendencies and take back student unionism from hoodlums and charlatans.
“You must restore student unionism to its glory days. After undergoing such rebirth, the student union must become a shining light to the dark polity,” he added.

Romance / 11 Things I Learned From 11 Years Of Marriage by mayoviral(m): 9:46pm On Nov 15, 2014
This is an interesting piece i found online. Read below....

My husband and I recently celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary. This is a bullsh*t anniversary. I mean, 10 is a big deal and 15 is kind of cool, but 11? Nobody cares! Hallmark doesn't even get excited. The suggested gift is steel. Steel, you guys. I guess I could get him pots and pans? Or buy him a quirky stainless steel Star Trek flask and fill it with good bourbon? Or maybe I should write him a list. After all, I've learned exactly 11 things in 11 years of marriage. Crazy how that works, huh? Are you amazed? I am amazed. Here we go:
1. Sync your iCal. Or whatever calendar thingy you use. Most of our fights are because I told him we were having drinks with Fred and Anna Thursday night, but he wasn't listening because he was watching the Kings game. Or he told me not to talk to him Tuesday night because the Kings game would be on, but I wasn't listening because I was buying shoes online. If you both know the schedule, you'll be way less likely to get your signals crossed.

2. Let your partner watch what they need to watch. If your husband or wife wants to watch three solid hours of bad food TV, geez, go in the other room while they watch weirdos decorate cakes or whatever. If they need to watch Scandal every week in silence, don't give them crap; let them get their Olivia Pope on. If you're tolerant of their obsessions, life will be a lot easier. Hey, whatever gets you through the day, right, gladiators? (I love you, Olivia Pope.)

3. Compromise with family obligations. If your significant other's parents require attendance at every Thanksgiving, Easter and Columbus Day, then you guys should spend Christmas or Hanukkah, 4th of July and Labor Day with your family. (Save Halloween and New Year's for friends, though. That's enough family time, guys. Who are you, the Sopranos?)

4. Ask how they are. OK, this one seems super obvious. But, when you get really familiar with someone, it's easy to forget the niceties. And the niceties are, you know, nice. My husband asks me how I am every morning and I love it. I always ask him back. Even if we're both just saying a generic "OK" or "fine," it still feels good that someone in the universe cares how you are that day.

5. Let them be right once in awhile. I know. You're always right. But consider how infuriating it would be to live with someone who is always right for more than a decade. Pretty "ugh," huh? So when your husband or wife has a point and you deep down KNOW they have a point, why not step back and tell them you get it? It only stings for a second, I promise. (Unless the fight is about Scandal, then stand your ground. I love you, Olivia Pope.)

6. Sometimes, you really do look gorgeous. It's a fact of life that your partner is going to give you compliments. Occasionally, you should consider taking them. Try saying "thanks" instead of ticking off the reasons that red wrap dress makes you look like either a gorilla or George Washington in drag. Also, realize that your spouse loves you and sees you in a different way: a way that's not watered down by years of self-deprecation and doubt. Maybe you really do look gorgeous. Suck it up, you gorgeous gorilla.

7. Compliment them daily. On the flip, make sure you tell your husband or wife what you appreciate about them. This has the effect of making you love them even more because you're reminding yourself of their awesome qualities. I regularly tell my husband that I appreciate him cleaning everything always (he's one of those neat people), but my favorite thing is to just jump on him and squeal, "You're being so cute right now!" If this isn't your style, a well-timed ass squeeze or an outburst of "Your arms are so hot" in the frozen pizza aisle of the supermarket are also quite affective.

8. If you're not in the mood, you can get in the mood. Seriously, try it. It works every time, I promise. I mean, unless you have the flu or something, then maybe take some Nyquil and get some sleep, you horn dog.

9. Put on your game face just for them. I feel like my husband gets the brunt of whatever challenge I'm facing. Because we live together and because I love him, I tend to let him see the big ugly more frequently than I'd like. But lately, I've been making an effort to give him the brave face I'd give my barista or my yoga teacher. And, you know what? It's working. I feel better about things in general and I'm quite certain he feels better about not being my dumping ground.

10. Spend time alone. This isn't revolutionary advice. I'm sure you have this pinned on a Pinterest board, only more eloquently stated and in a cuter font. But, it's common advice because it's true. My husband goes to Vegas once a year with his guy friends. I go to Texas and get stupid on margaritas with my sister. I do yoga; he golfs. I like to lock myself in a room with a good book; he likes to lock himself in front of the History Channel with a good cocktail. Whatever it is, don't spend every waking moment together, because you'll get sick of each other after a decade, no matter how fascinating you both are.

11. Be grateful for what you have. Take a moment and thank the universe that you have someone to hit happy hours with, to watch Supernatural with, to roam around bookstores on the weekend with. Allow yourself to thank your lucky stars that you have someone who makes you laugh and hugs you hard and does little dances when he grabs a beer from the fridge. Whether it's been 11 years or 11 months, it's pretty cool to connect with another human. Acknowledge this and everything gets better. (Except Scandal because it's already perfect. I love you, Olivia Pope.)

Romance / 3 Types Of Women You Should Never Date Or Marry If You Want To Live Long by mayoviral(m): 10:56pm On Nov 13, 2014
If you want to have a successful relationship or marriage, there are some kinds of girls you should not get involved with. When you realize that you are dating one of these women – it is better to leave to save your sanity, time and money.

1. She is a liar
This girl can be extremely charming and intelligent. At first you wouldn’t realize that she is lying. She can tell you tales which never happened just to impress you. And some time later she just starts lying to you for no reasons. If you catch her, she would try to convince you with another lie. And then confess to you that she lied. And because of your love, you keep forgiving her. But you should better not allow a chronic liar to ruin your life.

2. Money lover
She is a nightmare of all Nigerian men. She is addicted to buying whatever she wants and whatever she thinks looks good. These girls are rarely satisfied, and continue to look for new perfumes, jewelry or clothes. Her biggest aim is to have a huge wardrobe. Or to look like some Nollywood star. She can’t stop buying even if you are not earning enough for her. It is her habit. So she will date any man who can pay her. If you can’t, she will easily dump you for someone richer.

3. Lazy girl

There is nothing wrong with her health. But her favorite hobby is lying on her back and watching TV. She hates to do any chores. This girl hunts for a man who will become her ‘guarding angel’ and will ‘protect’ her. So she will let you to get very close to her, just to turn you into her slave. If she does not change with time – she is surely not your partner. It is better to leave her behind, because she will drain you.
So, dear guys, you should better watch out for girls of these types of girls. And you, ladies, avoid being the girl on this list if you want some trusting, caring and lasting relationships. Respect your man and be proud of him.

Romance / Things You Should Never Do During Your Girlfriend's Period by mayoviral(m): 12:25am On Nov 12, 2014
http://www.viralsplash.net/2014/10/15-things-you-should-never-ever-do.html

We all know that sometimes (maybe all the time), women get a little bit crazy near their periods.
In any case, the fact still remains that women may not act like themselves while on their periods. The real problem is navigating your relationship during this special time of the month, when your lovely girlfriend turns into, dare I say, a monster.
So, here are a couple of tips on things NOT to do around the time of (and definitely not during) your girlfriend’s period.

1. SAY THINGS LIKE, “ARE YOU PMSING?”

2. SAY YOU DON’T WANT PIZZA

3. TEASE HER

4. NOT LET HER CONTROL THE TELEVISION

5. DEBATE THINGS

6. PASS JUDGMENT

7. ASK HER TO DO ANYTHING

8. RUN OUT OF PAINKILLERS

11. GET CAUGHT NOT LISTENING TO HER

12. FORCE HER TO SOCIALIZE

13. SMOTHER HER

14. DO NOTHING

15. SKIMP ON AFFECTION

With that, I conclude what you should not do while your girlfriend is PMSing or, perhaps, already on her period. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Career / MUST READ: A 27-year-old Millionaire Reveals How He Built His Wealth by mayoviral(m): 2:11am On Nov 11, 2014
Anton Ivanov isn’t your average millionaire.
For starters, he’s barely 27 years old, he doesn’t work in Silicon Valley and he isn’t heir to a family fortune. He doesn’t live in a tiny house or get his food from a compost garden in his backyard, either.
Ivanov, who shares wealth-building tips on his blog, Financessful.com, made his million the old-fashioned way: He read books. He saved early and often. And he started planning his rise to millionaire status before most kids his age had their driver’s license.
“I’m a testament that if you want something bad enough and you keep working towards it ... you will get to where you want to go,” he says. "It was my habits and my principles that made me rich."
Here’s how he did it.

Starting young
A decade ago, Ivanov was like any other teenager in the U.S.. He went to high school, earned decent grades, and held down a minimum-wage job at Subway. His parents, who had moved his family from their native Russia in 2002, both worked full time — his mother as an attorney, his father as an accountant. They lived a moderately middle-class life in the suburbs of San Diego.
But Ivanov realized early on that there was something different about his new neighbors — they all seemed a lot wealthier than his family. His parents were heavy spenders and harbored a deep mistrust of financial services. He couldn’t quite blame them — they had moved to the U.S. just a few years after living through one of the worst depressions in Russian history. But at the same time, he felt like he was missing something.
“In high school, there was pretty much no financial education and my parents wouldn’t talk to me about money,” he says. “Everything I learned about money I had to learn myself.”
He devoured books on wealth building. An early favorite was “Think and Grow Rich,” the 1937 classic by Napoleon Hill, which details strategies that can be used to overcome psychological barriers to wealth.
“That book was extremely influential,” Ivanov says. “It wasn’t a ‘how to get rich’ book but it gave me a vision and a mental system that I could use to achieve pretty much anything I wanted.”
At age 16, he had one goal in mind: become a millionaire.

College or career?

Anton opened a savings account at a local bank and socked away 100% of his Subway wages over the course of three years. By the time he graduated high school, he had saved about $10,000. He might have used the cash to cover part of his college tuition, but he knew it wouldn’t be enough to cover all of his expenses. He didn’t relish the thought of taking on tens of thousands of dollars in student loans to make up the difference, either.
"My family wasn't really prepared to pay for my college tuition, so I knew I would have to rely on at least some student loans to get me through, which I was very much against,” he says.
He had other ideas for kickstarting his career. While his friends signed up for college classes, Ivanov celebrated his 18th birthday by opening his first Roth IRA. After spending some time working (mostly administrative jobs near home), he decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy at age 20. He earned about $55,000 a year as an electronics technician and took distance learning classes to earn a Bachelor’s degree in information technology and programming. Uncle Sam picked up the tab for his tuition and fees.
“When I compared [going to college] to joining the military, the latter seemed like a smarter idea because I would be earning income right away instead of waiting until I graduated,” he says. “And I could receive an education pretty much completely free, which I did.”

The ‘lazy’ investor
After Ivanov maxed out his Roth IRA (the annual contribution limit is $5,500), he opened up a small brokerage account with TradeKing. Years of careful research convinced him stock-picking wasn’t for him. His investing strategy was simple: focus on low-cost stock mutual funds that covered a variety of major asset classes and let the market do its job.
“It’s what I would call a lazy portfolio,” he says. After doing research, Ivanov decided to invest in seven asset classes: domestic, large-, mid-, and small-cap funds, emerging market funds, commodity funds, with a small chunk in bonds. Then he let it ride. He rebalances his portfolio once a year, if at all.
A couple of years into his stint with the Navy, Ivanov faced his first true test as an amateur investor. By saving 60% of his Navy income and taking on freelance jobs on the side, he had been investing somewhere between $40,000 to $45,000 per year when the financial crisis hit in 2008.
He says he lost “a good amount,” but when the market sank he didn’t sell like many other investors did. “I powered through and when the market hit bottom, that’s when I tried to save and invest even more. To me, it was a no brainer,” he says.

Getting into the real estate game
Heavily influenced by books like “The Millionaire Real Estate Investor” and “The Millionaire Next Door,” Ivanov knew he wanted to start investing in real estate. His timing couldn’t have been better. The bust had essentially turned the housing market into the world’s biggest bargain bin.
In 2009, Ivanov put down $80,000 on a $400,000 condominium in San Diego, which he rents out for a $36,000 a year (he nets about $12,000 a year after making his mortgage payments). Today he estimates the property’s value is well over $600,000.
Since then, Ivanov has added another property to his nascent housing empire. He purchased a $430,000 duplex earlier this year. He collects $21,000 a year in rent ($12,000 net after his mortgage is covered) renting out one of the apartments, while he and his fiancee live in the other.
“I believe in taking smart risks,” he says. “If you see an opportunity and you think it’s a good opportunity, you should take it and understand that you may be wrong and understand what the repercussions may be.”
He hopes to own at least 10 properties by the time he hits his 40s, but he’s in no rush. Once his housing expenses are taken care of, he puts all of his income — from his rental properties, his job and his freelance work — first into his retirement account, emergency savings account, and then into his taxable brokerage account. Once those goals are met, he contributes to a separate high-yield savings account, which he sets aside for future real estate purchases.

Keeping it simple
Committing to saving 60% of his income was no small feat for Ivanov. The average American manages to save only than 5% of their income per year.
He swears by one basic savings strategy: automate everything and never rely on credit.
“The day my salary gets deposited, I don’t even see that money,” he says. “It’s in and out of my account, which keeps me honest and keeps me on track.”
The emergency fund he’s been carefully maintaining since his days at Subway has come in handy as well. When both his parents unexpectedly passed away a few years ago, he was able to rely on that money to cover his airfare and funeral expenses.
Fortunately, military life was the perfect environment for a single person looking to save. The bulk of his fixed expenses — housing, food, transportation, insurance — were covered. He set up automatic transfers for his savings and investment accounts and followed a strict schedule. First, he maxed out his annual Roth IRA contribution. Then he contributed the maximum to his annual Thrift Savings Plan (the federal employee version of the 401(k)). He split the remaining balance between his brokerage account and the savings fund he keeps for future real estate investments.
While he studied, he earned extra cash through one-off web design and programming gigs he got through freelance job websites like elance.com and odesk.com. He estimates these side jobs added another $15,000 to $20,000 to his annual income.
“Definitely being in the military helped a lot, but I also had a mature outlook on life,” he says. “Buying expensive things isn’t really fun for me. I realized those things don’t really make me happy.”

Reaching the $1 million mark
Ivanov left the Navy in 2013, but even after he moved back to San Diego, he kept up his frugal lifestyle. Eager to add to his investments, he made increasing his income a top priority and landed a full-time job working as a software developer and test engineer. Combined with the freelance work he continues in his free time, he earns just shy of $100,000 a year (not including income form his rental properties) and still saves at least half of his net income.
Every expense — from his gym membership to his pending wedding in 2016 — is planned for and saved for well in advance. His detailed planning regimen is, he says, the key to his success so far.
“Usually, at the beginning of the year I look at my life for the next two to five years and I plan it out,” he says. “I write out any expense I’ll have that I won’t be able to cover using my paycheck and figure out how much I need to save each month to meet those goals by my deadline.”
Ivanov crossed the $1 million net worth mark just two months shy of his 27th birthday in June this year. He was thrilled to finally reach this milestone — but not surprised.
“If you have a really strong desire in your head, you can power through any obstacle you may face,” he says. “I truly believed that when I was 16 and I believe it now.
