SportsWhen Fathers Dictate The Sidelines: The Troubling Reality Of Grassroot Football by Mazijaka(op): 3:08pm On Aug 30, 2025
Grassroot football is supposed to be the bedrock of the game, a place where young players learn discipline, respect, and the spirit of fair play. In Makurdi, however, the scenes on the touchlines often tell a very different story. Instead of allowing the game to flow naturally, on the contrary, those in charge of the game turn the pitch into a theatre of confusion.

One of the most recent and troubling scene yesterday in the ongoing BFA Chairman's Cup is that of a father (also a referee) openly instructing his daughter, who is serving as an assistant referee. In any proper football setting, such scenario would be unthinkable. The referee and her assistants are meant to represent neutrality, authority, and order. But yesterday, in the dusty field of Government College Makurdi, the boundaries collapsed.

It was more than just an amusing scene. It reflects the lack of structures, respect, and professionalism that has underpin grassroot football, especially in Makurdi. When a father dictates to his daughter (referee) the calls to make, it sends a dangerous message: that authority is negotiable, that rules bend to relationships, and that football here is not about fairness but about influence.

Makurdi’s grassroots football is full of talent and passion, sadly, the environment around them seems to poison those dreams. With no proper referee structure, no consistent enforcement of rules, and no accountability for interference from parents like we saw yesterday, the game becomes a mirror of wider societal disorder.

If grassroots football is the foundation of Nigeria’s footballing future, then what we see in Makurdi should worry us all. Fathers dictating to referees is not just a quirky story it is a symptom of a broken system. Until respect for the game and its structures is restored, the talent on display will always be undermined by the chaos off the pitch.

Because in the end, football is not only about goals and glory. It is also about respect for the players and for the game itself. And when a father stands on the sidelines, making calls for the daughter, it is respect and integrity that loses.

SportsKMK Foundation Academy CEO Kingsley Morrison Decries Neglect Of John Ekpeyong by Mazijaka(op): 12:06pm On Aug 21, 2025
KMK Foundation Academy CEO Kingsley Morrison decries neglect of John Ekpeyong by Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Sports into the appointment of Akwa United and Ibom Angels board members

As the CEO of KMK Foundation Academy, Kingsley Morrison is well-acquainted with the sports landscape in Akwa Ibom State. With a deep passion for nurturing young talents and a keen eye for potential, Morrison has been an active member in the development of sports in the state for years. Yet, recently, he has expressed his disappointment and concern over the neglect of a sports icon, John Ekpeyong, by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Sports in the appointment of board members for the state's top teams, Akwa United and Ibom Angels.

In a recent interview, Morrison spoke in a tone of voice that can only be described as firm and unwavering. He was unafraid to address the concerning issue at hand, shedding light on the lack of recognition given to one of the state's most accomplished sports figures. Morrison did not mince his words as he decried the mistreatment of Ekpeyong, who has been an integral part of the sports scene in Akwa Ibom State for over two decades.

John Ekpeyong, a former footballer and coach, has dedicated his life to promoting sports in the state. With a successful career as a player, Ekpeyong moved on to coach the state's football team and led them to numerous victories. He was also the first coach of Akwa United, the current premier team in the state. However, despite his impressive track record and dedication to the state's sports development, Ekpeyong has been overlooked in the recent appointments of board members for both Akwa United and Ibom Angels.

Morrison emphasized the need for the state to recognize and utilize Ekpeyong's expertise and vast experience in sports. As a man who has played a significant role in shaping the sports scene in Akwa Ibom State, Ekpeyong's knowledge and guidance are invaluable assets that should not be ignored. Morrison also raised concerns that the lack of recognition for Ekpeyong may have been influenced by personal agendas rather than merit and the greater good of the state's sports development.

Kingsley Morrison argues that it is essential to highlight the impact of this neglect on the state's sports scene. Akwa Ibom state has made tremendous progress in developing and promoting sports in recent years. However, the appointment of board members with questionable credentials and the overlooking of a sports legend like Ekpeyong may hinder this progress and damage the state's reputation in the sporting world. Morrison urges the state to rectify this mistake and give Ekpeyong the recognition, respect, and position he deserves.

Morrison's words serve as a wake-up call to the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Sports and other relevant authorities. It is time to put personal agendas aside and prioritize the development of sports in the state. John Ekpeyong's invaluable contribution to the sporting landscape of Akwa Ibom State cannot be ignored, and he deserves a seat at the table in the appointment of board members for Akwa United and Ibom Angels. It is time to show Ekpeyong the respect and recognition he has earned, and ensure that his expertise is utilized for the betterment of sports in the state.

PoliticsThe Coalition And Political Strategy 101 by Mazijaka(op): 6:50pm On Jul 02, 2025
1. The ADA bait. The ADC pivot. The Tinubu camp walked straight into a political trap. This isn’t confusion. This is calculated chaos. Let me explain the genius of the coalition’s first chess move.

2. First, understand this: In politics, as in war, the loudest moves are often the least important. The coalition floated ADA, the All Democratic Alliance as bait.
The goal? Trigger Tinubu’s camp into premature reaction. And it worked like magic.

3. Tinubu’s media machine fell for it.
They rushed to create counter narratives. Their surrogates mocked the ADA “coalition.” Insiders quickly rushed to INEC to create a rival ADA faction.

But the coalition had long chosen ADC.
ADC, not ADA, was always the plan.

4. This is straight out of Sun Tzu’s Art of War: “All warfare is based on deception.”
“Appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected.” They made noise in ADA, But struck in ADC.

5. “Play a sucker to catch a sucker. Seem dumber than your mark.”- 48 laws of power.

While APC folks like Bwala were mocking ADA calling it unserious, the coalition already locked down real talks with real structure under ADC.

They weren’t confused. They were two steps ahead.

6. Tinubu’s allies were so eager to “drag” them, they overplayed their hand. Even the presidency’s digital warriors ran PR thread mocking the “so-called ADA.”

Now they’re silent. Because the coalition checkmated them with ADC.

7. What we are seeing today is classic political misdirection. In chess, it’s called the poisoned pawn: You offer up a seemingly weak piece, your enemy takes the bait, and walks into a trap. ADA was the poisoned pawn. ADC was always checkmate.

8. This move also exposed one thing: FEAR. You don’t overreact to a joke.
You don’t mock a ghost unless you feel its presence. The way Tinubu was talking in Nassarawa the other day shows he and his acolytes know a real coalition could unseat them. And it has begun.

“Men judge more by the eye than by the hand.” “It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver.”- Machiavelli. ADA was the performance. ADC is the hand. The APC and Tinubu saw the curtain, but not the stagehand behind it.

10. So while they laughed at what they thought was the coalition’s move… The real machinery was being built behind closed doors. Now they must play catch-up. This isn’t just politics. This is political strategy 101. 😂

11. If you thought this was confusion, think again.

“When the fox wants to outwit the lion, it wears the mask of madness.”

ADA was that mask. ADC is the lion’s leap.

Just like one elder used to say “History has a new page, & some people just missed the first paragraph”.

SportsFIFA Club World Cup: Chelsea Waited Till Extra Time Second Half To Thrash Benfic by Mazijaka(op): 2:41am On Jun 29, 2025
Chelsea beat 10-man Benfica thanks to three late extra-time goals in an extraordinary Club World Cup last-16 match that lasted more than four hours and included a near two-hour delay for extreme weather.

Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the second half of extra time in Charlotte, North Carolina eventually saw Chelsea through to the quarter-finals.

The Premier League side had been heading for an uneventful victory, with Reece James’ brilliant near-post free-kick in the 64th minute looking like the winner.

However, with just four minutes left, players were taken off the pitch due to thunderstorms in the area and, when the teams eventually returned after nearly two hours, Benfica scored with their first shot on target to take the game into extra time.

Angel di Maria, playing his final game for Benfica, converted from the penalty spot in the 94th minute after a Chelsea handball to make it 1-1.

Two yellow cards in the 96th minute and first minute of extra time saw youngster Gianluca Prestianni sent off, the latter for a late challenge on Levi Colwill.

And Chelsea made the man advantage pay eventually, as they set up a Friday quarter-final in Philadelphia against Brazil’s Palmeiras.

There was a crowd of only 25,929 in the 74,867-capacity Bank of America Stadium for the game, which saw Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile injured – he left the ground on crutches – and star midfielder Moises Caicedo pick up a second booking of the campaign to earn a one-match suspension.

What was the main talking point?
Thunderstorms are commonplace in the local Charlotte area and the threat of one kickstarts a ‘seek cover protocol’.

It is reset by a further 30 minutes every time another lightning strike occurs within an eight-mile radius.

This is, however, not something the majority of the football audience or the players involved in the match are used to – and Chelsea’s squad looked furious when they were dragged off.

Who stood out and who did not?
Aside from the weather experts, both full-backs James and Cucurella were outstanding at both ends of the pitch in a new system being rolled out by manager Enzo Maresca in the Club World Cup.

But the problem with the match was that there was a before and after the stoppage with a chaotic-looking Chelsea eleven and Benfica’s red card impacting the match with substitute Malo Gusto struggling.

The standout statistics
Two of James’ three goals in 2025 have been on direct free-kicks (also v Bournemouth in January), with those being Chelsea’s only two direct free-kick goals this calendar year.
Chelsea had not faced a shot on target in consecutive Club World Cup matches until Di Maria’s late penalty.
Benfica are winless in their past eight games against English opponents (three draws, five defeats) since a 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League in March 2014.

What’s next for these teams?
Chelsea next face Palmeiras in the quarter-final in Philadelphia on Friday (kick-off 20:00 BST) but Benfica now turn their focus to a Champions League play-off while the Portuguese season begins with the Supertaca – their domestic Super Cup – against Sporting on 31 July.

SportsAhead 25/26 Npfl Season: Kanu Hails Gov Otti Over Enyimba Stadium Upgrade, Vows by Mazijaka(op): 1:15pm On Jun 14, 2025
With just over two months to the proposed kickoff of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season on August 22, 2025, a wave of optimism is sweeping through the camp of Nigeria's most successful football club — Enyimba International FC — as club chairman Ambassador Kanu 'Papilo' Nwankwo has applauded Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his visionary commitment to revamping the iconic Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

The stadium, which has long been a fortress and symbol of pride for the People’s Elephant, is currently undergoing a significant facelift. In a chat with Enyimba Media, the legendary two-time African Footballer of the Year did not hold back his admiration for the state government’s intervention, describing the renovation work as “timely, strategic, and deeply appreciated by the entire Enyimba family.”

> “Yeah, we are delighted with the renovation work currently ongoing at the Enyimba Stadium by His Excellency,” Kanu said. “Our Governor has always shown his willingness to deliver the dividends of democracy across all sectors, including sports. What he is doing now gives us the morale and the infrastructure to push for greatness in the coming season.”

With the NPFL set to enforce strict licensing and club infrastructure standards, Kanu confidently assured stakeholders and fans that Enyimba would meet and exceed all the requirements set by the League Management.

> “I can assure you that the People’s Elephant will be ready with all the criteria prescribed by the NPFL ahead of the new season,” Kanu declared. “We are not just getting ready to comply, we’re building to compete and conquer.”

The former Arsenal and Ajax forward, now in his second season as Enyimba chairman, reaffirmed the club’s ambition to reclaim thee NPFL title and make a triumphant return to the CAF Champions League.

> “We are working closely with all arms of the club — from technical to medical, from administration to supporters. Our goal is clear: win the league and return to the continent where we belong. The passion is there, the planning is on course, and the vision is bold.”

As the NPFL countdown begins, expectations are sky-high in Aba. With infrastructural revival underway, a chairman with global pedigree at the helm, and the unflinching backing of a reform-driven governor, Enyimba FC are not just preparing to compete — they are gearing up to dominate.

Sports“imc’s Reconciliation Approach Lacks Genuineness” – Abayomi Ogunjimi by Mazijaka(op): 2:46pm On Jun 12, 2025
President of the Authentic Nigeria Football & Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC), Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi (Bonfrere), has expressed concern over the recent reconciliation efforts led by the Interim Management Committee (IMC), describing them as lacking transparency and genuine stakeholder engagement.

Speaking from London, where he is currently leading ANFASSC members in support of the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup, Ogunjimi acknowledged the efforts of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to unify Supporters Clubs. However, he questioned the approach and execution of the reconciliation meeting held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

He recalled that six Supporters Clubs signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the NFF office on February 13, with a key provision being collective participation in major decisions. Ogunjimi expressed concern that the recent stakeholders' meeting featured sponsorship branding from companies such as Wakanow, Cards, and Kalabash, yet the signatories were not informed or involved in any discussions regarding those partnerships. He stated that this raised questions about transparency and inclusiveness.

Ogunjimi also noted that several key figures who were part of the MOU were not present at the meeting, including himself, which, in his view, undermines the credibility of the process. He questioned how reconciliation could be considered meaningful without the involvement of primary stakeholders and emphasized that unity must be built on mutual respect and honest collaboration.

Addressing legal and governance issues, Ogunjimi reaffirmed that the Supporters Clubs are registered organizations under Nigerian law, specifically the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), and are not subject to unilateral directives.

He cited a recent meeting with the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who reaffirmed that status and the independence of these groups.

Ogunjimi concluded by aligning with the NSC’s position that all Supporters Clubs can work together during national team matches by singing unified songs and coordinating support in the stadium, without requiring the dissolution or merger of existing groups.

He stressed that unity should not come at the cost of existing structures and that any reconciliation must be built on trust, inclusivity, and respect for established organizations.

Chikeluo Iloenyosi who is in London with the Super Eagles says the unity in the team under Eric Chelle is wonderful and the manager is doing everything possible to carry every player along.

SportsAbramovich’s Fortune Drops By £650 Million Due To Tension Between Russia&ukraine by Mazijaka(op): 7:07pm On Feb 15, 2022
CHELSEA owner Roman Abramovich's fortune has dropped by about £650million in just one day due to mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The multi-billionaire Russian tycoon, 55, has seen the value of his 28.6 per cent stake in steel group Evraz, fall sharply.

Investors fear sanctions will be imposed on Russian companies.

Shares in Evraz, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, were down 129½p, or 29 per cent, at 315¼p.

Danni Hewson, a financial analyst at investment platform AJ Bell, said: “The new trading week has begun on a bad note across Europe and Asia.

“Investors fear the alarm clock is about to sound on a physical battle between Russia and Ukraine.”

The Russian oligarch bought Chelsea in 2003 and his £1.6billion stake in Evraz in 2006.

According to This Is Money, Abramovich is estimated to be worth £10billion and he owns the world's second largest yacht, the 533ft Eclipse.

Polymetal, a Russian gold miner also saw its value slashed.

Stocks in the London-listed company fell 11 per cent to to £11.15 over the same period.

It came as Foreign Office Secretary Liz Truss threatened a raft of sanctions on Russian billionaires living in London.

The Foreign Secretary has an international package of penalties ready to go within days should Kremlin troops cross into Ukraine.

It means hundreds of wealthy Russians face being locked out of Britain.

She said: “It will be a cost to Russia if they invade Ukraine, in terms of the cost of a long-running war, but also the sanctions.”

They would be severe, she said, and target oligarchs and firms across Russia.

SportsHow Embarrassing Riches Masked True Achievement Of Chelsea's 'special' Success by Mazijaka(op): 4:38pm On Feb 15, 2022
Chelsea won the Club World Cup on Sunday (AEDT) and with it became the latest club to 'complete football', albeit over an incredibly short time. Money is often pointed to as the sole reason for it, but scratch a little deeper and it's been a level playing field for a long time.

It may have flown under your radar amongst all of the Premier League fixtures over the weekend, but Chelsea won the Club World Cup on Sunday morning (AEDT) with an extra-time penalty through Kai Havertz to beat Palmeiras.

With the might and riches of the European leagues, it’s not ever a surprise that the Champions League winners becomes the eventual winners but for Chelsea, this victory carried extra significance.

They didn’t win it back in 2012, when they were reigning European champions, losing 1-0 to Brazilian side Corinthians in the final – the only time in the last 14 years that the Champions League winner didn’t win.

The world's best football for only $14.99 a month. Sign up here.

But once captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who incidentally had also won every major tournament other than that one until then, got his hands on the trophy it meant Chelsea became part of an elite group of clubs to have won everything.

But it’s extra special when you consider how quickly the Blues managed to achieve their impressive haul of silverware, from first winning the Premier League in 2005 to the Club World Cup 17 years later.

However, it’s no coincidence that this period of success began once Roman Abramovich had begun injecting his riches into the club and this has been used as a stick to beat Chelsea with, as just a quick look on social media on Sunday morning (AEDT) will tell you what fans thought of their achievement.

But former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes that the Blues’ success isn’t tainted and that they’ve been playing on a level field with everyone else over that period, although that often isn’t noted because they’ve been so much more successful.

“There’s many teams that have come into wealth,” he said on Optus Sport’s Gegenpod podcast.

“Yes, Chelsea have an owner with lots of money and who transformed the club overnight, but if you look at history there are plenty of clubs who have done similar but have flown under the radar.

“Whether you look at Manchester United and the way they’ve evolved – is it because they’ve got American owners that it’s a bit different? They were a PLC so maybe because it wasn’t an individual that people see it differently? Even Liverpool, look how much Klopp has spent on rebuilding that side. Manchester City goes without saying.

“I’m not denying that Chelsea have spent lots of money, it’s a valid argument. I get why people are upset by it but there have also been many, many clubs who have tried it and been unsuccessful. Man City, for all the money they’ve invested, they haven’t won the Champions League. For all the money invested, it still takes something special.

“What Chelsea did in a very short period of time is remarkable. It doesn’t matter how much money they threw at things. Those sorts of things can take forever – just look at PSG and how much money they’ve thrown and still not won the Champions League. So I understand the criticism but you still have to get it right on and off the football pitch for it to be successful.”

And despite the image that Chelsea are a club that just spends, a quick look at their net spend over the last few seasons will tell you that they are balancing the books better than most at their level and that the days of cash injections from Roman Abramovich are over now the club is self-sustaining.

He added: “What’s impressive about how Chelsea do it, even if you look at last summer, they sold five or six players to generate enough money to buy the likes of Lukaku. I think the net spend was only a couple of million.

“So they’re balancing the books really well. That wasn’t the state at the beginning but once they got to a certain level it was about balancing the books and I don’t have an issue with it.

“[Abramovich] is one of the best and most successful and Chelsea really does try and run like a business in balancing the books rather than just having those injections of cash, which they can’t do anymore.

“It happened at the beginning and now they don’t do it, they can’t afford to do it. If they get caught then they have to suffer the consequences like everyone else but they’re certainly not taking that route.

“The interesting thing is the method of how they’ve been successful, the ruthlessness of it with sacking managers, but it’s been a successful model. From my understanding it wasn’t the intention initially, but they’ve been successful doing it and they’ve followed that path.”
