EKEYA STAKEHOLDERS REAFFIRM SUPPORT FOR BASSEY PIUS BASSEY’S RE-ELECTION, DISMISS DISCLAIMER

Political leaders and stakeholders from Ekeya Ward in Okobo Local Government Area have jointly reaffirmed their support for the re-election of Hon. Bassey Pius Bassey, describing a recent purported disclaimer as misleading and without merit.

In a strongly worded statement released on Friday, the stakeholders dismissed a document purportedly circulated under the banner of “APC Stakeholders, Ekeya,” and signed by one Mr. Pius C. Bassey. They argued that the disclaimer misrepresented the outcome of a well-attended political engagement held in Ekeya Ward on April 7, 2026.

According to the group, their earlier endorsement of Hon. Bassey Pius Bassey, member representing Okobo State Constituency was deliberate, clear, and publicly expressed during the meeting, and remains unchanged. They emphasized that the position taken at the gathering reflected a collective and well-considered decision, not subject to reinterpretation by any individual or unauthorized group.

“The said disclaimer is not only misleading but an attempt to appropriate collective authority where none exists,” the statement read, adding that no consultation or consensus backed the claims made in the document.

The stakeholders further accused the author of the disclaimer of lacking the political mandate to speak on behalf of the people of Ekeya Ward, describing the move as a failed effort to distort a “clearly documented public engagement.”

Reiterating their stance, the leaders maintained that their support for Hon. Bassey’s second term is rooted in what they described as his visible performance and impact within the constituency. They also extended their endorsement to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, citing the need for continuity in governance and development.

They called on party faithful and constituents to disregard any contrary narratives and align with what they termed a forward-looking agenda for the area.

“Our support is firm, our position is consistent, and our resolve is unwavering,” the statement concluded.

The declaration was jointly signed by prominent figures in the ward, including Chief Efefiong Antigha, a former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly; Hon. 2015 and the Burden of Memory:

Between Hon. Robinson Uwak and Sir Victor Antai — Who Should Oro Call Messiah?

In 2015, history presented a defining moment for the Oro Nation, the third largest ethnic nationality in Akwa Ibom State, to produce a Governor. It was a moment many believed was both timely and justified. Yet, at that critical juncture, the greatest resistance did not only come from outside; it came, painfully, from within.

During the administration of Godswill Akpabio, who was then Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the machinery of succession was firmly in motion. The Governor rallied influential political figures across the state, including key actors from Oro Nation, to support Udom Emmanuel, an Ibibio son from Onna Local Government Area. The outcome is now history, Udom Emmanuel emerged Governor.

However, what remains a subject of deep reflection is the role played by some Oro political leaders in that process. Among them was Sir Victor Antai, then a two-term Chairman of Mbo Local Government Area and a known loyalist of the outgoing Governor. Rather than championing the Oro cause at a time when collective advocacy was most needed, he aligned with the prevailing power structure and actively mobilized support for a candidate outside the Oro extraction.

Notably, there was no public resistance, no visible dissent, and no attempt to challenge what many perceived as the political sidelining of Oro aspirations. Instead, the focus was on consolidating the will of the incumbent.

Amid this tide, one voice stood out, resolute, defiant, and unwavering.

Robinson Uwak, then a serving member of the House of Representatives for Oro Federal Constituency, chose a different path. He openly criticized the succession plan and boldly articulated the case for an Oro Governor. Through interviews on international platforms and consistent public advocacy, he amplified what many believed but were unwilling to say.

The consequences were immediate and severe.

He faced political isolation. Allegations and pressures mounted. State forces, both overt and subtle, turned against him. At a time when he was seeking re-election, he lost his party ticket under controversial circumstances. Undeterred, he defected to the APC, then a relatively weak opposition party in Akwa Ibom State.

That singular decision altered political dynamics.

His defection injected visibility, credibility, and grassroots momentum into the APC within the state. His message resonated deeply with many in Oro Nation, who saw in him a symbol of courage and conviction. Yet, despite the groundswell of support, he lost the election to the late Rt. Hon. Chief Nse Ekpenyong.

History, however, records more than victories; it records courage.

Today, a striking irony confronts the Oro people. The same Victor Antai, who stood with the establishment that denied Oro the opportunity in 2015, now occupies one of the most influential positions at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as Executive Director (Projects), a role widely regarded as pivotal to infrastructure development in the region.

Many interpret this appointment as both a reward and an opportunity, perhaps even a pathway for reconciliation between the Oro people and the political structure that once overlooked them. There is a growing belief that the Oro Nation is owed not just political recognition, but tangible development.

Yet, in the midst of this evolving narrative, a deeper moral question emerges, one that goes beyond politics and into the soul of a people.

Can a people move forward without first correcting the injustice of memory?

There is a growing call within Oro Nation, not whispered, but steadily rising, that Robinson Uwak must be honoured. Not necessarily for holding office, but for standing firm when it was costly to do so. For choosing principle over preservation. For carrying the burden of a collective aspiration when many had abandoned it.

To honour him is not to divide the present; it is to dignify the past.

At the same time, there is an equally compelling expectation, subtle, yet significant, that Sir Victor Antai must come to terms with history. Leadership is not only about present influence; it is also about moral responsibility. There are moments in the life of a people when silence, alignment, or inaction carry consequences that echo for generations.

And so, the call is not for condemnation, but for reflection, and where necessary, reconciliation.

For many, that reconciliation begins with a simple but powerful gesture: an acknowledgment that, in 2015, Oro’s collective interest was not fully defended. An apology, not as weakness, but as strength. Not as politics, but as statesmanship.

Because true leadership is not diminished by admitting the past, it is elevated by it.

This, then, is the crossroads before Oro.

To celebrate those who betrayed yesterday and deliver today, while refusing to forget those who sacrificed yesterday. To demand development, but also demand accountability of history. To build a future that does not erase its own heroes.

Perhaps the question is no longer who should be called “messiah.”

Perhaps the real task is greater:

To become a people who honour courage, demand responsibility, and never again allow their moment to be traded in silence.

Until that happens, 2015 will not merely be a memory.

It will remain a burden.

The nomination of Sir Victor Antai as Executive Director (Projects) at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has stirred political conversations across Akwa Ibom State, with many interpreting the move as a calculated effort by Senator Godswill Akpabio to reconcile lingering grievances within the Oro Nation.

The appointment comes amid growing calls within Oro for accountability, recognition, and development. Many continue to honour figures like Robinson Uwak, former House of Representatives member for Oro Federal Constituency, who openly opposed the 2015 succession plan and advocated for an Oro governor, despite facing political isolation and personal cost.

While some view Antai’s appointment as an olive branch, others caution that reconciliation requires more than symbolic gestures. “An appointment is one thing; genuine acknowledgment of past oversights is another,” said a community leader from Oro. “Development must follow, and historical injustices must be addressed, not just papered over.”

The unfolding situation highlights broader questions about political strategy and ethnic representation in Akwa Ibom. Can high-profile appointments like Antai’s bridge past divides, or will they be seen merely as tokens in a complex political game? 2027: Victor Antai Fingered in Secret Campaign Against Akwa Ibom Governor

A grassroot socio-political organization, the Oro Mandate Preservation Group (OMPG) has accused the Executive Director (Projects) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Sir Victor Antai, of allegedly orchestrating a covert campaign against the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, warning that such actions could destabilize the political harmony currently enjoyed in the state.

In a statement issued on March 18, 2026, and jointly signed by the Secretary General of OMPG, Comfort Eddy Essang, and its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Edeke Edet, the group said it had “watched with keen interest the ongoing propaganda sponsored” by Antai over the sharing of political positions in Oron Federal Constituency, describing recent publications linked to the controversy as “spurious” and attributing them to “a non-existent group, Volunteer4Equity & Justice.”

According to OMPG, Antai “has been secretly waging a serious war against the Governor… thus jeopardising the current atmosphere of unity in the State.”

The group further alleged that Antai’s actions are capable of straining the relationship between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno, noting that his conduct threatens “the existing cordial relationship” between both leaders. It accused him of engaging in “divisive activities aimed at undermining the unity of the Party,” including the alleged sponsorship of media attacks against key political figures such as Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi and the member representing Oron Federal Constituency, Rep. Martins Esin.

OMPG also cited instances it described as acts of disrespect toward the governor, including a past incident in Eket where Antai allegedly denigrated him, as well as a 2024 Oron Union event where the governor’s representative was “brazenly dishonoured.” The group claimed that Antai’s conduct at the event, including his refusal to recognize the governor and his deputy, raised concerns about his loyalty and intentions.

At the center of the controversy is the ongoing debate over political representation and zoning within Oron Federal Constituency. The group dismissed claims of marginalization being advanced in some quarters as misleading, arguing that there has never been a formal zoning arrangement for the House of Representatives seat. It noted that the current representative, Martins Esin, has served only one term and questioned “the logic behind the current misleading agitation.”

The statement also accused Antai of inconsistency, pointing out that he previously supported a candidate from Urue Offong/Oruko Local Government Area in the 2023 elections despite now advancing arguments based on rotation. It further alleged that the agitation for equity is merely a cover for personal political ambition, asserting that “Sir Victor Antai is sponsoring the agitation for the position of Deputy Governor, using the House of Representatives position as a smokescreen.”

OMPG argued that contradictions within the agitation itself expose its true intent, particularly the suggestion that while the House of Representatives seat should remain in Oron Local Government Area, the Deputy Governorship should be ceded to another area. It maintained that such demands reveal that “someone who is eyeing the Deputy Governorship is behind the noise.”

Addressing the situation in Udung Uko Local Government Area, the group contended that the agitation lacks moral justification, alleging that dominant interests within the area have historically excluded minority communities from key political positions. It stated that since the creation of the local government in 1996, “the majority Udung Uko community has never ceded the House of Assembly position to any of the three minorities,” questioning the basis of the current calls for equity.

The group concluded by urging Antai to focus on his responsibilities at the NDDC and refrain from actions capable of destabilizing the political environment in Oron Federal Constituency and Akwa Ibom State at large. It warned that “every indirect attack on the Governor is capable of affecting the relationship between him and the Senate President,” calling for restraint in the interest of unity and political stability.

The Senator representing Akwa Ibom South in the National Assembly, Senator Ekong Sampson, has congratulated Chief Assam Assam SAN, on his emergence as the political leader of Eket Senatorial District.

In a congratulatory message to Chief Assam, Senator Sampson expressed confidence that the new political leader would deploy his vast experience and intellectual depth spanning diplomacy, law and nation-building to strengthen unity and advance the socio-political development of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District and the State at large.

The Lawmaker's message read in parts: "The diversity in our Senatorial District calls for leadership open to large-heartedness and a clear grasp of our peculiarity. Having related with you closely over the years, I trust that your deep intellect and outstanding background in diplomacy, law and nation-building will be deployed to managing our rich mix and potential."

The Onomkpoinam Mkpat Enin said that he looked forward to working with Chief Assam and other stakeholders in Akwa Ibom South to develop the Senatorial District, adding "In the affairs of Akwa Ibom South, we must share a meeting point for the good of our people."

At the same time, Senator Sampson also expressed appreciation to Rt Hon. Chief Nduese Essien - a respected elder statesman and Chairman of the Eket Senatorial District Elders Forum for "demonstrating courage, patriotism and integrity in leadership", noting that "these are values that Akwa Ibom South is respected for."

...Charges Beneficiaries on Prudent Investment of Business Grants

Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, has urged beneficiaries of the council’s empowerment programme to judiciously invest the funds disbursed to them to ensure their business growth and long-term sustainability.

The Chairman gave the charge while distributing cash grants totaling N6 million naira to 60 market women drawn from the eleven political wards, each receiving N100,000 to boost their trading capital. The disbursement marked the second phase of the scheme and took place during the Council’s Monthly Solemn Assembly at the Council Multipurpose Hall in Okopedi on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Engr. Henshaw explained that the initiative was carefully designed to promote economic sustainability at the grassroots, especially amid prevailing economic challenges. He noted that an earlier phase of the programme last year had benefited 40 women, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 100.

“We are committed to ensuring our local businesses thrive despite the current economic climate. I charge you to invest these funds wisely to grow your trades and secure your future. This is only the beginning, as more financial support programmes are being structured,” the Chairman stated.

The event, which also served as a spiritual gathering to usher in the new month, featured a sermon themed “I Am a Witness of God’s Goodness,” drawn from Acts 26:22. In his exhortation, Apostle (Dr.) OsuiniAbasi George encouraged participants to remain steadfast and hopeful, assuring them that divine intervention often comes at unexpected moments.

In a related development, the First Lady of Okobo LGA, Mrs. Nelly Henshaw, organized a special birthday celebration for council staff born in January, February, and March. She performed the ceremonial cutting of the cake and presented curated gift packages to the celebrators, describing the gesture as part of efforts to foster unity, appreciation, and a sense of belonging within the council workforce.

Senator Ekong Sampson Urges Swift Take-Off of University of Maritime Studies, Oron During Senate Budget Defence

At the National Assembly yesterday, Distinguished Senator Ekong Sampson, Senator representing Akwa Ibom South, made a strong call for the immediate operationalisation of the University of Maritime Studies, Oron, pressing the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and relevant authorities to urgently transition the institution from legal status to full functionality. The demand came during the 2026 budget defence session between the Senate Committee on Marine and Blue Economy and the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Senator Ekong, speaking as a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, highlighted the prolonged delay in the take-off of the university despite its establishment by law. The former Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron was upgraded to the University of Maritime Studies following an Act of Parliament assented to by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021, but it has yet to function fully as a degree-awarding tertiary institution.

Describing the institution’s upgrade as a “landmark development,” Sampson said the delay has frustrated residents of Oro nation and Akwa Ibom South who are eager to see the university fulfil its mandate of training skilled professionals for Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy sectors. The senator noted rising pressure from constituents who view the delay as marginalisation and have held protests calling for the university’s operationalisation.

Sampson also reminded the committees of his long-standing advocacy for maritime education. He has previously mobilised community leaders to engage top Senate leadership, including Godswill Akpabio, to accelerate the implementation of the law establishing the university.

The senator framed the issue within broader efforts to expand federal tertiary education in the region, noting his sponsorship of bills for the establishment of other federal universities in Akwa Ibom South — including federal institutions in Ikot Abasi and Eket. Sampson reiterated that the maritime university’s take-off will create jobs, boost technical capacity and support Nigeria’s strategic ambitions in the blue economy.

Sampson’s intervention drew bipartisan backing from Abba Moro, Senate Minority Leader, who cautioned against potential legal and transparency challenges. Moro warned that continued presentation of the institution as the old academy in federal budgets, rather than as a university — could expose the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to legal infractions and weaken accountability in public spending.

For its part, the Ministry, via committee chairman Wasiu Eshilokun, assured lawmakers that the matter will be thoroughly examined and that legislative and administrative measures would be taken in compliance with the law.

Stakeholders outside the National Assembly have also weighed in. Leading civil society groups such as the Oro Youth Movement insist the University of Maritime Studies, Oron is “backed by law” and imperative for national maritime development.

However, not all voices align with the conversion strategy. A concerned son of Oro Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State has firmly dismissed claims that former NDDC Sole Administrator, Effiong Okon Akwa, is nursing an ambition to replace the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akon Eyakenyi, describing the allegation as speculative, unfounded, and the imagination of the author and his sponsors.

The clarification follows a publication authored by Utitofon Morgan Ukpong, publisher of Sitippe and Chancellor of the Coalition of Online Publishers (COOPA), which alleged that Pastor Akwa was engaging in secret political manoeuvres within Oro Federal Constituency and lobbying stakeholders to undermine the Deputy Governor.

Reacting to the report, Victor Paul Unoh, an APC member and concerned son of Oro Federal Constituency, said the claims lack credibility and are unsupported by verifiable evidence. He described the article as misleading and calculated to create unnecessary tension within the Oro political family and Akwa Ibom State at large.

According to Unoh, Pastor Akwa has never expressed any intention, either publicly or privately, to replace the Deputy Governor. He stressed that the relationship between Akwa and Eyakenyi is widely acknowledged as cordial, respectful, and mutually supportive.

“In local parlance, many in Oro describe them as ‘Akpanwa ma Okpe’, the first son and first daughter of the same parents,” Unoh stated. “This clearly reflects the harmony and unity that exist between them. It is therefore irresponsible to suggest any rivalry or political plotting.”

He further warned against the spread of narratives based on unnamed sources and insinuations, noting that such reports are capable of sowing discord where none exists.

Unoh emphasized that Oro Federal Constituency has consistently demonstrated political maturity, unity, and strategic engagement. He urged stakeholders and the general public to disregard the publication in its entirety and remain focused on supporting the administration of Governor Umo Eno and Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi in delivering the dividends of democracy.

Residents and farmers of Nsie Community in Atak Oro Development Area of Okobo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday staged a peaceful protest over the destruction of farmlands, streams, and economic crops caused by the ongoing Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project.

The demonstrators, however, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating what they described as a transformative national infrastructure project capable of boosting economic growth and regional connectivity. They noted that the highway is a bold step toward development but insisted that such progress must not come at the expense of host communities.

The protest, which focused on the Nsie axis of Sections 3A and 3B of the highway under construction by Hi Tech Construction Company, drew men, women, youths, and elders who demanded immediate compensation for the loss of cassava farms, palm plantations, streams, and other vital economic crops.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Compensate Nsie Farmers Now,” “Development Must Not Destroy Livelihoods,” and “Justice for Nsie,” the protesters reiterated that they are not against the project but are calling for fairness, transparency, and lawful compensation.

Addressing the press during the protest, Mr. Francis Okon Effiong, speaking for the Village Council, presented the community’s demands. These include immediate compensation for destroyed crops and farmlands, an independent assessment of losses with community and government participation, and the establishment of a committee to monitor the project’s impact.

He stressed that the protest remains peaceful and lawful, emphasizing that the community fully supports President Tinubu’s development agenda but expects adequate and timely compensation as provided by law.

Affirming this position, the Acting Village Head, Chief Asukwo Ben Ufuo, described the demonstration as a lawful appeal for justice. Community leaders called on law enforcement agencies to investigate the accused and cautioned Hi Tech Construction Company and other stakeholders against engaging with them, stressing that they were never nominated to represent the community and do not own property along the project alignment.

Village Council Chairman, Mr. Obedient Okon Bassey, emphasized the need for transparency and inclusion. “Nsie Community welcomes development and appreciates the President’s vision for national growth. However, we demand lawful recognition, fair compensation, and inclusion in project-related opportunities. These are our constitutional rights,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of the youths, the National Youth President of Nsie and International President of the Amalgamated Okobo Youth Leaders Forum, Ulap Unwana Okon Oyononowi, highlighted the economic strain caused by farmland destruction. He reaffirmed support for the highway project but stressed that many youths depend on farming for survival. “With our farms gone, life has become harder. We also seek inclusion in jobs and project-related activities,” he said.

Women’s Leader, Mrs. Rebecca Jerome Innueonwi, underscored the impact on families. While commending the Federal Government’s infrastructure drive, she stressed that compensation is urgent. “Our families depend on these farms for food and income. The Minister for Works, Engr. David Umahi, must ensure women and children affected by this project are not forgotten,” she appealed.

Security personnel were present throughout the protest, which remained calm and orderly. Leaders reiterated that the demonstration was peaceful and consistent with the Land Use Act and constitutional provisions guaranteeing compensation for land and crop losses arising from public projects.

During the protest, construction activities along the Nsie axis were temporarily halted as community members did not permit trucks and heavy-duty equipment to access the work site. Several project trucks were seen parked along the roadside, while workers suspended operations pending the resolution of tensions. Despite the disruption, protesters maintained discipline and ensured there was no violence or damage to property.

The Nsie Community’s key demands include immediate enumeration and payment of compensation, structured engagement with recognized community representatives, inclusion of indigenes in employment opportunities, and protection against fraudulent land claims.

Constituency structure further complicates the narrative. Rep. Esin represents Oron, Mbo, Okobo, Udung Uko, and Urueoffong Oruko Federal Constituency, a geographically expansive and socially diverse area. Coordinating projects and representation across five LGAs requires broader consultation, logistical spread, and political balancing.

Rep. Idem’s constituency, comprising Ukanafun and Oruk Anam LGAs, presents a different administrative scale. This is not a question of importance or impact, but of operational scope. Project distribution, stakeholder engagement, and development planning across two LGAs differ significantly from managing five. Comparing achievements without adjusting for this disparity creates a misleading picture.

Political commentators often rely on visible indicators such as the number of bills sponsored, motions raised, empowerment programs conducted, or projects executed. While these metrics are important, they do not exist in a vacuum. They are shaped by years in office, institutional access, constituency size, and committee influence. Removing these variables from the equation reduces analysis to a superficial scoreboard.

There is also a broader concern. When performance comparisons ignore tenure and structural realities, they subtly discourage first-term lawmakers who may be making meaningful progress within their timeline. Serious political analysis must rise above talking points. It must recognize that legislative performance is influenced by structural conditions, not just individual effort. Without this understanding, comparisons become tools of bias rather than instruments of insight.

For Oro Federal Constituency to attain the same vantage legislative position that longer-serving constituencies now enjoy, continuity becomes a strategic consideration. Legislative influence matures with time. Networks strengthen, access widens, and the ability to attract federal interventions improves with experience. Rather than dismissing the performance of a first-term lawmaker navigating one of the largest constituencies in the region, a more constructive path lies in allowing that experience to compound. Granting Rep. Martins Esin another term would position him to leverage his growing parliamentary relationships, committee experience, and institutional understanding to attract greater dividends of democracy to Oro Federal Constituency. Development momentum is built, not reset.

OKOBO CHAIRMAN'S WIFE FLAGS OFF MEASLES–RUBELLA VACCINATION CAMPAIGN, PRESENTS ESSENTIALS TO NURSING MOTHERS

The wife of the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Mrs. Nelly George Henshaw, has officially flagged off the Measles–Rubella (MR) Vaccination Campaign in the area, calling on parents, caregivers, and community leaders to ensure that all eligible children are presented for immunization.

Mrs. Henshaw, who performed the flag-off at the Primary Health Centre, Okopedi, on Wednesday, described the campaign as a critical public health intervention designed to protect children within 9 months to 14 years against measles and rubella, two highly contagious but preventable diseases that can lead to serious complications and even death if left unchecked.

As part of the event, the Chairman’s wife also presented special essential items to nursing mothers in attendance, a gesture aimed at supporting maternal and child health while encouraging greater participation in the vaccination exercise. The donation drew appreciation from beneficiaries and underscored her commitment to the wellbeing of mothers and children in the Local Government Area.

She noted that the exercise aims to achieve comprehensive coverage across all wards in Okobo LGA and assured residents that the council, under the leadership of her husband, Engr. George Henshaw, is fully committed to providing the necessary support for effective coordination, logistics, and community mobilization.

The Chairman’s wife appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, women groups, youth leaders, and other stakeholders to support vaccination teams by encouraging parents and caregivers to cooperate and by helping to dispel misinformation and myths surrounding vaccines.

Shedding more light on the importance of the vaccination, Dr. Grace Sampson, who represented the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Abuja, explained that measles remains one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths among children, while rubella infection in pregnant women can result in congenital defects. She emphasized that the MR vaccine is a proven tool in reducing child mortality and safeguarding future generations.

In her remarks, the Director of Primary Health Care, Okobo, Mrs. Margaret Mkpang, assured that health workers have been adequately trained and deployed to fixed posts and outreach centers to ensure that no child is left behind. She encouraged parents to take advantage of the exercise, noting that early vaccination is key to building strong immunity in children.

The Hidden Truth Behind “The People Have Spoken”: A Structural Critique of Nigeria’s Electoral Democracy

The assertion “the people have spoken” is a familiar post-election motif in Nigeria. It is presumed to signify the triumph of popular sovereignty, the foundational democratic principle that political authority originates from the collective will of citizens (Dahl, 1989). In normative democratic theory, elections are legitimate only when they genuinely reflect the free and informed choice of the electorate. Yet, in the substantive functioning of Nigeria’s democracy, this premise requires critical interrogation.

A central tension in contemporary Nigerian electoral politics lies between procedural democracy and substantive democratic choice. Joseph Schumpeter’s (1942) competitive elitist model, which frames democracy as a system where leaders acquire power through contestation among elites, helps illuminate this tension. Under such a model, democratic competition exists in form but not in effective civic control. That is, citizens may formally vote, but real decision-making power often resides with political elites and party hierarchies.

In Nigeria, the decisive stages of political competition frequently occur not at the general election, but within the internal nomination processes of political parties. These processes, shaped by elite negotiations, patronage networks, and power brokers, determine which individuals gain access to the ballot. Consequently, the general election becomes a ratification exercise rather than a contest of independent popular choice. This dynamic resonates with the elite theory of democracy, which posits that a small cohort of influential actors—here, party leaders and godfathers—exercises disproportionate control over political outcomes (Mosca, 1939; Pareto, 1916; Mills, 1956).

This structural imbalance affects accountability mechanisms within the political system. Public officials, understanding that political survival depends more on intra-party endorsement than on grassroots credibility, tend to orient their incentives upward toward party hierarchies rather than outward toward constituents. This pattern sharpens the principal–agent problem: voters (principals) lack effective means to constrain or influence the behaviour of officeholders (agents) when nomination access outweighs electoral performance.

The persistence of “the people have spoken” as a legitimating phrase obscures this reality. It reinforces what Carothers (2002) describes as the façade of democracy: procedural forms that resemble democratic practice but do not yield substantive agency for citizens. Elections become legitimizing rituals—a trend also noted in studies of managed or semi-competitive democracies where electoral processes exist but with limited contestability (Levitsky & Way, 2010).

Moreover, this illusion of voter sovereignty carries social and political costs. When citizens internalise the belief that elections are determinative of political fate, they may engage in heightened partisanship, political hostility, and even violence. This pattern aligns with insights from democratic peace and conflict scholars, who note that electoral expectations unaligned with political realities can exacerbate social fractures (Schedler, 2006; Brancati, 2016). The frustration that emerges from participation without discernible power can fuel mistrust, cynicism, and social antagonism.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, a critical empirical and normative question arises: What must change for “the people have spoken” to reflect genuine popular will? The answer lies in structural reform. Internal party democracy must be strengthened through transparent and enforceable nomination processes. Electoral institutions must be independent and insulated from partisan interference. Civic education and engagement must extend beyond election cycles to include sustained awareness of democratic agency, including party-level participation.

In the absence of such reforms, elections will remain performative rather than substantive mechanisms of popular choice. Citizens will continue to bear the emotional and material costs of defending outcomes that were shaped outside their locus of control. In such a context, “the people have spoken” functions not as an empirical description of democratic agency, but as a rhetorical device that obscures the true distribution of political power.

Why Politicians Fear Party Leaders More Than You

In Nigeria, elections are not won at polling units; they are won at party headquarters. The most important vote is not cast on election day but behind closed doors where party tickets are handed out.

That is why many politicians fear party leaders more than they fear the electorate.

When a man openly thanks a powerful party leader for making him a two-term local government chairman, even when that leader is not from his community, it tells you where real power lies. When the same politician publicly praises the Senate President for nominating him as a deputy governorship candidate, it confirms a simple truth: political survival flows upward, not downward.

This is not an accusation; it is a revelation.

Accountability in Nigeria often moves toward party power brokers, not toward the people. That is why public anger is easily ignored. That is why broken promises rarely have consequences. Loyalty is owed to those who give tickets, not to those who cast ballots.

So when ordinary citizens say, “I will not vote him again next time,” a hard question must be asked: really, was it your vote that gave him the first victory? Or was it the party structure?

As 2027 approaches, Nigerians must purge their minds of dangerous political illusions. Do not kill yourself for politicians who already know how they emerged. Do not fight your neighbour, spill blood, or destroy relationships for leaders who fear party leaders more than they fear you.

Elections should not be wars between citizens while the real winners sit comfortably above the fray.

Until politicians fear voters more than party leaders, democracy will remain performance, not power.

The decisive intervention of the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. (Chief) George Henshaw, MNSE, has produced significant progress in the long-standing boundary dispute between Ube and Obufi communities, as the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Her Excellency, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, PhD, has dispatched a high-level technical delegation to inspect the disputed boundary.

The development follows Chairman Henshaw’s earlier promise to the people during a peace meeting held at the Council Secretariat Okopedi, where he assured Ube and Obufi stakeholders that he would immediately notify the State Boundary Committee and request state-led technical intervention. The Chairman fulfilled that promise by formally writing to the Office of the Deputy Governor shortly after the meeting.

Acting on his request, the Deputy Governor, who also chairs the Akwa Ibom State Boundary Committee, sent a delegation led by Elder Okokon Ufi, Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor on Boundary Matters, to carry out an on-site assessment of the disputed area.

Elder Ufi explained that the goal of the inspection is to conduct a comprehensive technical survey and produce a graphic boundary plan that will guide the peaceful and lasting resolution of the dispute. The team included a government surveyor and boundary officials who thoroughly inspected the land, accompanied by five representatives each from the Ube and Obufi communities.

The Executive Chairman of Okobo, represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Veronica Clement, expressed deep appreciation to the Deputy Governor for her swift response and unwavering commitment to peace across the state. She also commended Chairman Henshaw’s steady leadership, noting that his proactive approach has been crucial in de-escalating tensions and maintaining harmony in the area.

She urged both communities to embrace peace and support the ongoing process, emphasizing that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of mutual coexistence.

Officials accompanying the delegation from Okobo Council included the Supervisor for Youths Development, Sports and Internal Security, Mr. Nse Oluhu, and former Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Youth Council, Mr. Emmanuel Anso.

The Ube community was represented by His Highness Chief Asuquo Titus, alongside Etim Otoyo Inyang, the Village Council Chairman, as well as Henry Inyang Edet, Edem Okon Edet, and Ekpeyong Moses Okon.

On the part of Obufi community, the delegation comprised Chief Umoh Etim, who serves as the family head, together with Passover Asuquo Okon, Odiong Bassey Etim, Stephen Luke Ekpenyong, and Edet Asuquo.

The arrival of the State Boundary Committee marks a major leap forward in achieving a permanent solution, reaffirming Engr. Henshaw’s dedication to peace, unity, and inclusive governance in Okobo LGA.

Village Youth Presidents in Okobo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State will now receive monthly allowances following the approval of a novel and unprecedented initiative by the Executive Chairman, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw.

The Chairman made the announcement on Wednesday during a joint meeting with community development leaders and Village Youth Presidents under the aegis of the Amalgamated Okobo Youth Leaders Forum, held at the Pavilion Auditorium, Council Secretariat, Okopedi.

Describing the scheme as the first of its kind in the history of Okobo Local Government Area, Engr. Henshaw noted that never before had youths been officially placed on a monthly allowance by the Council. He explained that the purpose of the initiative was to profile all youth leaders, formally recognize them, and certify their leadership roles, thereby creating a stronger and more coordinated structure for grassroots governance.

The Chairman further insisted that all legitimate village youth presidents must submit a letter of attestation from their respective village councils, duly signed by the Village Head. According to him, this measure was necessary to ensure credibility, eliminate impersonation, and guarantee that only duly recognized leaders benefit from the allowance.

He also highlighted other major strides in youth development, including the successful amalgamation of all 66 village youth presidents into one umbrella body and their integration into the decision-making process of his government. According to him, these steps were taken to give young leaders proper direction, legitimacy, and active participation in governance.

He further listed the significant roles of village youth presidents, noting that they are expected to be peace ambassadors, lead sanitation exercises in their domains, safeguard government facilities, and mobilize their peers for development initiatives. He vowed to provide them with the necessary support and resources for optimum service delivery, stressing that his administration will always stand by them in the discharge of their responsibilities.

“You must help us to maintain peace and order. You must lead every sanitation exercise in your domain. Above all, your main duty is to protect government property in your communities,” he charged.

He further cautioned youth leaders against crime, cultism, and drug abuse, urging them instead to live as role models for the younger generation.

The announcement and subsequent exercise drew applause from stakeholders who delivered goodwill messages during the event. The President General of Okobo Development Union (ODU), Prince Edward Walter, and the President General of Atak-Oro Development Union (ADU), Elder (Chief) Effiong Asanwana, hailed the Chairman’s inclusive and people-centered leadership.

Chief Asanwana specifically called for continued support for the Chairman to enable him to keep delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Okobo LGA. He described Engr. Henshaw as “a visionary leader whose sincerity of purpose, courage, and passion for grassroots development are already transforming communities across the local government.”

The Vice President of the Amalgamated Okobo Youth Leaders Forum, Ulap Ekpenyong Ekpenyong, described the profiling and certification as historic, saying it would empower youth leaders to serve their communities more effectively.

Similarly, the Chairperson of Faithful Ladies for Umo Eno (Okobo Chapter), Mrs. Josephine Ukoh, commended the initiative as a practical demonstration of grassroots inclusion. She also used the opportunity to call on the people of Okobo to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that political participation begins with registration.

The Chapter Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Elder Douglas Ukott, described the monthly allowance scheme as “timely and unifying.” He also appealed to party members to revalidate their membership and urged intending members to use the window to register with the APC, while also encouraging the wider community to register for their PVCs.

On his part, the Director General of the George Henshaw Campaign Organization, Prince Isaac Anyin, lauded the move as proof that the Chairman is fulfilling his campaign promises and building trust with the people.

The meeting also brought together the Vice Chairman, Lady Veronica Clement; Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Essien Ntekim; Head of Service, Engr. Akpan Ekong; Secretary of Council, Pastor Etim Ibok; Councilors, Supervisors and Special Advisers, political advisers and the Divisional Police Officer; the Commandant of the Nigerian Army; the Director of DSS; and representatives of other security agencies, alongside community associations and women groups.

Following the meeting, the youth presidents proceeded to the office of the Honourable Supervisor for Youth Development, Sports and Internal Security, Mr. Nse Oluhu, who superintended over the profiling and clearance exercise. Those who presented all required documents, including the village council attestations, were successfully profiled and cleared for payment, as the Chairman had already announced the availability of their funds.

With the new and unprecedented monthly allowance scheme, profiling, and certification of youth leaders, the Chairman assured that his administration would continue to strengthen grassroots governance, promote peace and security, and deliver inclusive development that leaves no one behind.

As Akwa Ibom State prepares for its inaugural Sports Festival, Team Okobo has expressed readiness to compete for the coveted state trophy, scheduled from Monday, 8th to Saturday, 13th September 2025.

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, who also serves as Leader and Chief Technical Adviser of Team Okobo, visited the team’s Training Camp at St. Theresa Primary School, Okobo, on Monday. He was flanked by his beautiful wife, Mrs. Nelly Henshaw; the Vice Chairman, Hon. Veronica Clement, Leader of the Legislative Council Hon. Essien Ntekim; the Secretary of Council, Pastor Etim Ibok; the Head of Local Government Services, Barr Emem Nnsewo; present and former Supervisors, Special Advisers and other notable council officials.

Addressing the team, Chairman Henshaw reassured the athletes of the Council’s unwavering support. He urged them to remain disciplined, give their best, and demonstrate the unity and resilience that Okobo is known for. “Compete with honor and integrity,” he said, “and make your community proud through your efforts on the field.” He further emphasized that the Council would provide all necessary resources to enable the athletes to perform at their highest level and bring laurels back to Okobo.

Receiving the council boss at the training center, the Honourable Supervisor for Youth Development, Sports, and Internal Security, Mr. Nse Oluhu, who also serves as Chairman of the Festival Committee in Okobo LGA, praised the athletes for their dedication and assured them that all logistical support had been provided to ensure a successful outing at the festival.

Earlier, former lawmaker and immediate Transition Committee Secretary, Hon. Edu Atta, who is also a member of the Festival Committee, commended Chairman Henshaw for his exceptional leadership style. He noted that in over 15 years of active involvement in sporting activities in Okobo LGA, no serving council chairman had ever visited Team Okobo in their training camp, adding that Henshaw’s hands-on approach would significantly boost the athletes’ morale.

Adding a message of solidarity, former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chief Peter Linus Umoh, encouraged the athletes to uphold the dignity and reputation of Okobo LGA through their performance.

PEACE ADVOCACY GROUP DISOWNS A'IBOM STATE GOVERNMENT EMPOWERMENT CLAIMS

The Peace Advocacy Group (PAG), one of the most vocal socio-political organizations that threw its weight behind Governor Umo Eno during the 2023 elections, has spoken out strongly against claims that it benefitted from the governor’s empowerment initiatives.

In a recent government publication titled “How Support Group Members Have Benefited from Gov. Umo Eno’s Empowerment Initiatives in Two Years,” the group was listed among more than 1,500 organizations said to have accessed grants, SME equipment, and digital training. The report further claimed that the governor’s empowerment program had disbursed more than ₦2.4 billion to beneficiaries in just two years.

But PAG insists that this account is false. In a statement signed by its International Coordinator, Engr. Aniekan James Unah, the group categorically denied that any of its members had received empowerment or financial support under the initiative. According to the statement, if anyone was listed as a beneficiary under the group’s name, such inclusion was fraudulent and carried out without the consent of its leadership.

For PAG, the issue cuts deeper than just missed opportunities. The group expressed frustration that despite investing enormous energy, resources, and goodwill into Governor Eno’s election—including standing firmly by him during the highly publicized certificate saga—its members have been left unrewarded while its name is allegedly being misused. Many within the organization now feel overlooked and disillusioned, and the leadership fears that this growing discontent could fracture the unity of its base.

Governor Umo Eno’s empowerment drive, launched shortly after his inauguration, was envisioned as a means of rewarding political loyalty and addressing grassroots needs. Grants were designed to support small businesses, equipment was distributed to aid startups, and digital training programs were created to prepare young people for modern job markets. The government boasts that over ₦2.4 billion has already been invested to strengthen these groups. Yet questions have long lingered over the fairness of the scheme, with critics arguing that some groups closer to the corridors of power are favored at the expense of others. PAG’s denial now adds fresh urgency to these concerns.

To restore transparency, the Peace Advocacy Group is demanding that the government publish the full names of all beneficiaries. Such disclosure, it believes, will either confirm that PAG members were truly excluded or expose impostors who may have hijacked its identity to benefit from the program.

The group also raised alarm about the recent registration exercise for support groups conducted by the Governor’s Senior Special Adviser on Support Groups, Pastor Samuel Edet. PAG’s International Coordinator reportedly attempted to register but was denied access because the portal flagged the group as “already registered.” For PAG, this is not a coincidence but a troubling sign that its identity may have been hijacked for selfish gain.

Consequently, PAG has called on Governor Eno to order a full investigation into who registered its name during the verification exercise and who nominated supposed beneficiaries under its banner in the empowerment report. Until then, the group has urged its members and the general public to disregard its inclusion among the beneficiaries.

The situation underscores a broader tension within the governor’s support base. Thousands of groups staked their reputations and resources on the success of Eno’s campaign, each hoping that loyalty would translate into recognition and empowerment. When some are excluded or misrepresented, the sense of betrayal cuts deep. For PAG, the fight is not just about money—it is about fairness, legitimacy, and protecting its reputation from misuse.

How the government responds could shape the governor’s relationship with his grassroots allies in the months ahead. A transparent release of beneficiaries and a credible investigation may calm tempers and restore faith. But continued silence or neglect could feed mistrust, eroding the very political structures that helped bring the administration to power.

BEYOND POLITICS: HOW GEORGE HENSHAW IS GIVING GOVERNANCE A HUMAN FACE IN OKOBO

When Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw assumed office as Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government in October 2024, expectations were tempered with doubt. Years of promises that never translated into reality had left many in Okobo skeptical of local governance. Yet, less than a year into his tenure, his administration is gradually reshaping that narrative. Guided by empathy and vision, Henshaw is showing that leadership can indeed put people at the center of development.

One of the defining qualities of his leadership has been his approach to infrastructure. Rather than chasing projects that merely stand as monuments, his administration has chosen to focus on initiatives that directly affect everyday life. The completion of the Pastor Umo Eno Legislative Block — a fourteen-office complex — now provides a permanent and dignified home for grassroots lawmaking. The grading of twenty-four rural roads has transformed mobility across communities, easing the struggles of farmers, traders, and schoolchildren who once trudged along near-impassable paths. In addition, land has been acquired and cleared for future projects including a mini stadium, a computer-based testing centre, and an ultra-modern market at Utime Ukuko, all signaling a forward-looking vision that goes beyond subsistence.

Water, a most basic necessity, has taken center stage in Henshaw’s administration. For decades, many communities such as Ebighi Anwa and Utine Nduong depended on unsafe streams for drinking water, exposing themselves to preventable illnesses. Today, thanks to newly commissioned solar-powered boreholes, thousands now enjoy safe and reliable access to water. In Edem Enian Obot Inwang and the 50 Housing Unit Estate, residents describe the projects as life-changing. Communities such as Akapobo, Ebighi Anwa Ikpi, Mbokpu Akpabasi, and Udung Affiang are already benefitting, while plans are in motion to extend similar projects to eleven more communities — among them Udung Umo, Udung Amkpe, Oyoku Asang, Mbokpu Oduobo, Otieke Udung Eto, Osu Offi, Atabong, Ekpene Ukim, Etieke Nduong, and the council headquarters at Okopedi. The ultimate vision is clear: no Okobo family should ever again be forced to fetch water from unsafe streams.

Electricity, long a source of hardship in rural areas, is another area where intervention is underway. Rehabilitation efforts are planned for at least fifteen communities, including Udung Affiang, Udung Umo, Ebighi Anwa Oro, Utine Nduong, Itak Ekim, Otieke Offi, Eyede, Afaha Osu, and Ubak. In Amammong Okobo, the administration is working on realignment of electric poles to improve distribution and bring stability to a system many had abandoned hope in. The vision here is equally straightforward: light should no longer be a luxury for the people of Okobo.

Health has not been left out. Beyond physical structures, Henshaw’s administration has introduced a maternal health and multiple birth support programme designed to reduce the financial burden on women and families. Immunization campaigns are ongoing to safeguard children against preventable diseases, while foundation work has begun on a new primary health centre in Odobo. Importantly, the administration has institutionalized a regular monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which not only improves hygiene across communities but also strengthens the culture of collective responsibility for public health. These efforts, paired with awareness campaigns against gender-based violence, reflect a governance style that values both physical well-being and social dignity.

In agriculture, cassava farms have been established in Amammong and Udung Affiang, serving both as training grounds and as food supply bases. Plans are underway to distribute improved planting materials, promising stronger yields and greater food security. These initiatives not only tackle hunger but also offer opportunities for economic empowerment, especially for women and youth whose livelihoods depend on farming.

Education has equally received attention. Through an electronic bursary and grant scheme, undergraduates, postgraduates, and even PhD students from Okobo are benefitting from direct support. Law students, often burdened by heavy fees, are being given financial relief to continue their rigorous training. At the primary and secondary school levels, five thousand customized exercise books have been distributed to ease the financial strain on parents and encourage learning. The proposed computer-based testing centre further points to a future in which Okobo’s young people are prepared to thrive in a technology-driven world.

On the human capital and welfare front, the administration has appointed over 150 political aides to bring government closer to the grassroots while creating opportunities for young people to actively participate in governance. To enhance security across rural communities, professional hunters have been engaged to support conventional security agencies in tackling threats and safeguarding lives and property. Significantly, the Chairman has also sustained the regular payment of monthly stipends to aides and improved overall staff welfare, restoring dignity and motivation to the local government workforce.

Through these interventions, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw is not reinventing government but demonstrating that leadership is most effective when it listens, feels, and responds to the needs of the people. His style reflects a governance less about ceremonies and titles, and more about substance and humanity.

Okobo is now beginning to see what governance with a human face looks like: clean water running through taps, electricity lighting homes, roads connecting farms and markets, healthcare reaching mothers and children, opportunities opening for students, jobs created for the youth, security strengthened in communities, and dignity restored to long-neglected people.

Beyond politics, George Henshaw is proving that even at the local government level, leadership can touch lives, restore hope, and change destinies.

OKOBO LOCAL GOVERNMENT TAKES GIANT LEAP TOWARDS ACHIEVING UNITED NATION SDGs

The Okobo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, one of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria, has made significant strides in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). Under the leadership of Executive Chairman Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, the local government has commissioned three solar-powered boreholes in strategic locations, bringing relief to communities that previously lacked access to clean water.

The Nigeria Constitution, specifically the Fourth Schedule, Part II, Section 7 (Functions of a Local Government Council), empowers local government councils to construct and maintain basic infrastructure, including water supply. The relevant section states that a local government council shall participate in the provision of economic and social infrastructure, including "the provision and maintenance of water supply" (Fourth Schedule, Part II, Section 7 (b)). The Okobo Local Government Council Chairman has taken bold steps to address the water needs of his constituents, providing a sustainable solution to a long-standing problem.

Prior to the commissioning of these boreholes, residents of the 50 Units Low cost Housing Estate, Using Enian and Ebighi Anwa Oro communities had to contend with fetching water from distant streams, some of which were polluted, posing significant health risks. The streams, often used for washing clothes and bathing, were breeding grounds for waterborne diseases. Residents, particularly women and children, spent hours trekking long distances to fetch water, affecting their productivity and overall well-being.

The commissioning of the solar-powered boreholes by the Engr George Henshaw's administration is just one of several initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for Okobo residents. Other ongoing projects include the construction of a Computer-Based Center located in Nung Atai, which will enhance digital literacy especially for students and youths writing JAMB and will provide opportunities for skills development. The Mini Stadium, currently proposed for constructionwith site clearing ongoing, will serve as a hub for sports development and community recreation.

Also, the proposed Atak-Oro Market to be located at Utime Ukuko will provide a modern marketplace for traders, boosting economic activity and revenue generation in the area. Additionally, the Skills Acquisition Development program for Okobo Youths at DakKada Skills Acquisition Center (DASAC) will equip young people with vocational skills, empowering them to become self-reliant and contribute to the local economy.

These initiatives demonstrate the Okobo Local Government's commitment to achieving the SDGs and ensuring a brighter future for its communities. By providing access to clean water, promoting digital literacy, and investing in infrastructure and youth development, the local government is upholding its constitutional mandate and safeguarding the health, well-being, and prosperity of its citizens.

The people of Okobo have expressed their joy and appreciation for these life-changing projects, and it is evident that this administration is committed to delivering more. OKOBO LEADERS JOINS PROGRESSIVE FLIGHT, AS APC RECEIVES GOV UMO ENO IN GRAND CEREMONY

The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, popularly known as the Nest of Champions, in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, played host to a historic event earlier today, June 21, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) welcomed Governor Umo Eno and other prominent stakeholders from Akwa Ibom State into the party.

In attendance to witness this unique event were President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR (ably represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON), the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Umar Ganduje, The President of the Senate, Sen (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio, GCON, The Leader and members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, distinguished members of the National Assembly, and prominent party chieftains.

The event was a grand success, with the Okobo community and other stakeholders coming out in large numbers to show their support for the APC. Political heavyweights, including the Executive Chairman of Okobo LGA, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, Hon. Bassey Pius Bassey, Hon. Ubuo Effiong Ubuo, PhD, and former Speaker Rt. Hon. Barrister Peter Linus Umoh, were in attendance.

Other notable attendees included former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Engr. Asukwo Odiong, immediate past Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey, and members of the George Henshaw Support Group (GSG). The event was a testament to the unity and progress of Okobo LGA and Akwa Ibom State.

The stakeholders, who were all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before their recent defection, expressed their excitement and gratitude to the APC for welcoming them. They cited the APC's commitment to progress and development as the reason for their decision to join the party.

"We are thrilled to be part of the APC family," said Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw. "We believe in the party's ideology and vision for Nigeria, and we are confident that together, we can achieve great things."

Hon. Bassey Pius Bassey added, "We are not defectors, we are home-comers. We have come home to the party that truly cares about the people."

The APC has welcomed Governor Umo Eno and his team with open arms, and the party is expected to benefit from the influx of new members. The event was hailed as a major milestone in the history of Okobo LGA and Akwa Ibom State.

Okobo LGA's State-of-the-Art Legislative Complex ready for Commissioning

Here are visuals of the newly constructed Pastor Umo Eno Legislative complex in Okobo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

The impressive structure, built from scratch by the present Local Government Administration, led by Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw boasts modern facilities, including a well-furnished chamber, offices, committee rooms, exquisite toilets and a reception hall, designed to promote transparency, accountability, and collaboration among councilors.

The Pastor Umo Eno Legislative complex is a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing governance and development in Okobo Local Government Area.

The Legislative complex is expected to be commissioned by His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State on May 21, 2025, marking a new era of governance in Okobo.

OKOBO COUNCIL CHAIRMAN RECEIVES NEWLY ELECTED ACYLF EXCO

...assures them of council's support and collaboration

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, received in audience the newly elected executive members of Atak-Oro Community Youth Leaders Forum (ACYLF) on Monday, April 28, 2025.

The meeting, facilitated by Supervisor for Youth Development Sports and Internal Security, Mr. Nse Oluhu, and Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria Okobo Chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Anso, aimed to formally present the new executives to the Chairman.

The Electoral Committee Chairman, Ulap Eminue Sunday Eminue, took the opportunity to notify the council of their upcoming inauguration and coronation of the new President, Ulap Unwana Okon Oyononwi, and his executive members.

During the meeting which was also witnessed by the Vice Chairman of Okobo, Hon. Veronica Clement and other top council officials, Chairman Henshaw congratulated the newly elected executives and assured them of the council's support and collaboration. He emphasized the importance of youth empowerment and community development, urging the executives to work together to achieve their goals.

The Chairman also encouraged the youth leaders to prioritize projects that would benefit the community and promote unity among the youth. He assured them that the council would provide necessary assistance to ensure the success of their initiatives.
