Nairaland / General / Obiano Opens Massive Bridge by mcmaurice20(m): 5:47am On Dec 23, 2015 |
Obiano Performs Partial Opening of
Aroma Flyover.
By James Eze
The governor of Anambra State, Chief
Willie Obiano has partially opened the iconic
Aroma Flyover in Awka the state capital to
commuters in order to ease up the heavy
traffic congestion usually expected in the
area during the Yuletide season.
Performing the partial opening on Monday,
governor Obiano announced that the bridge
was about 95 percent completed. He
explained that he was opening it to ease the
flow of traffic in the heart of Awka during
the Christmas period and that it would be
closed down after the season to ensure
a proper completion of work.
Governor Obiano also performed a partial
opening of the Amawbia Bridge in
the AwkaCapital Territory to facilitate the
flow of traffic.
The governor used the opportunity to
announce to Ndi Anambra that he had
engaged the services of a special police
helicopter to carry out aerial surveillance of
the entire state during the Yuletide season to
tighten the screws on security in the state.
The helicopter surveillance team which
hovered above the Aroma Bridge while the
governor performed the partial opening of
the bridge is expected to feed intelligence
gathered from the skies to the Special Police
Patrol Cars on the ground in order to ensure
a comprehensive coverage of the state.
“We want to give Ndi Anambra a crime-free
Christmas. With the Helicopter Squad in the
air and the Special Patrol Cars on the ground,
Anambra shall continue to maintain its
position as the safest state in Nigeria,”
Governor Obiano enthused.
It would be recalled that barely a fortnight
ago, Obiano had donated 25 Special
American-style Patrol Cars to the State
command of the Nigerian police to enable it
sustain the crackdown on criminals in the
state.
The Police was also equipped with Speed Guns
to track down over-speeding vehicles and
Alcohol Testing Devices to checkmate drunk
driving.

Nairaland / General / Vice President Yemi Osibanja Visits Anambra Petrol Tanker Scene by mcmaurice20(m): 7:03pm On Jun 03, 2015 |
Okoli Sunday from Awka The Federal Government has promised to assist the Anambra State Government in taking care of the victims of the Sunday petrol tanker accident at Asaba Park Upper Iweka that claimed the lives of seventy Nigerians. This was disclosed by the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osibanjo at Asaba Park Upper Iweka Onitsha when he visited Anambra state on the instruction of the President Muhammadu Buhri, whom he said was unavoidably out of the country to commeserate with the Governor and people of the state. Vice President, Prof. Yomi Osinbajo flanked by Gov. Willie Obiano addressing journalists at the scene of petroleum tanker accident, where 69 people were killed at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, Thursday.. “The Federal Government will look for areas of cooperation and necessary where it can assist the state to take care of the victims and other things that will footstall such future occurrences, it is a clearer way of identifying with the people” he said. The Vice President first visited Toronto Hospital Onitsha, where the Chief Medical Directo,r Prince Dr Emeka Eze took him round to see the victims who were admitted in the hospita,l before proceeding on foot with him, the Governor of the State Chief Willie Obiano, and Senator Chris Ngige to the scene of the incident. Prof. Osibanjo further stated that “the President would have loved to come by himself but for his visit to some neighbouring countries who are cooperating with Nigeria to fight the Boko Haram insurgents”. “I am here to commiserate with the Governor of the State Chief Willie Obiano and the people of Anambra State, it is not enough issuing a press statement consoling the state and families of the victims, but the President felt it is necessary that we visit the state to assess the level of the incident, this is a proper direction we should go, to tell the people that every Nigerian is important citizen of the country” he said. The Vice President said that the President is greatly disturbed on the very sad and tragic incident, he extends his condolence, “I have been taken round and I have seen the heroic effort of the hospital and doctors who have responded very quickly and very eagerly and of course the state emergency operation and also the quick response to incident by the authorities of the hospital. “We are happy that the state Government has taken the responsibility of footing the bills, it is also a direction every responsible should take, and the direction our country should go, where every Nigerian citizen matters no matter who he is and where he is, so long as you are a Nigerian citizen, you are important, and we will go to any extent to ensure that this is done at all times” he said. He said that their government “will ensure that when such a tragedy occurs we will try to be there and ensure how we can ameliorate the situation, so that is why I am here Governor of the state Chief Obiano told the Vice president due to the accident the state has banned tankers and other heavy duty vehicles in the day time and on Anambras roads, saying, that it will reduce such carnage. “We have in addition banned heavy duty trucks that carry iron rod and cement to destroy bthe state roads heavy, they will not be allowed to ply state roads, purely because the state roads are not done in the same quality that the Federal roads are done, and each time they ply the roads they cause us more trouble, and a lot of repair works, they have to transship to be able to get to their destinations. Dr Emeka Eze thanked the Federal and State Government and specifically thanked the Vice President for finding time to visit the state, and promised that his hospital will do its best to save lives at any point in time

Business / Savannah Bank Which Way? by mcmaurice20(m): 7:16pm On May 26, 2015 |
The suffering of depositors of Savannah Bank is aptly reflected in the email received from one of our readers, Izuchukwu Emmanuel. “Please I was very optimistic to read your repor , when I saw the headline on your firm’s online page. Please I want to know if there is any hope that the bank will to re-open for business. My late dad had an account with the bank and my mum is suffering from financial burdens since the demise of my dad. Please keep me informed if there is any. Thanks.” Though brief, the email is loaded with meanings, and silent on many various ways the Savannah Bank saga is impacting families and businesses across the country. For example, how are we sure that the money trapped in the Bank did not in any way contribute to the death of this man’s father? How are we sure that the inability of the family of the deceased to access his money in Savannah Bank has not affected the education of his children? It won’t be surprising that one or more children of the deceased had dropped out of school because the family could not pay school fees. How are we also sure that the money trapped in Savannah Bank has not transferred a middle income family to the swelling ranks of the over 70 percent of Nigerians living below the poverty line? Savannah Bank was closed in February 2007, and many have forgotten that the bank was closed on a Friday night, few hours after millions of individuals and businesses deposited their cash takings for the week into their bank account. Many of these customers would have done so with the intention of accessing the money the following Monday to address one family or business need or the other. The manner in which the bank was closed, which is akin to a coup detart, aggravated the severe impact of the closure on the customers. There is no doubt, the closure and continued closure of Savannah Bank have contributed significantly to the problem of poverty and unemployment in the country. Hence it is a national shame. While the ability of the owners of Savannah Bank to raise the needed capital to reopen the bank, and the response of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the plight of the depositors of the bank would greatly determine how long the family of Izuchukwu Emmanuel and other depositors will continue to suffer, the attitude of the depositors themselves can play a critical role. If they adopt a ‘siddon-look’ attitude, they might suffer forever. But if they decide to take action to recover their money, their suffering may end in a matter of weeks or months. It is good that the depositors have formed a group, which last year, petitioned the President and Minister for Finance over their money trapped in the bank. Given the fact that there seems to be no concrete response to their petition, it is time for the depositors to take more action. The first step is to explore the option of dialogue with the management of the CBN. The depositors of Savannah Bank should send a delegation to the CBN Governor, to seek the position and plan of the apex bank on the continued closure of the bank and the entrapment of their money. The delegation should go with well articulated list of demand with deadline for the apex bank on the release of their money. If the apex bank and the owner of the bank fail to comply with this deadline, then the depositors should explore the option of legal action. To be continued next week. Politics / Gov Willie Obiano Swear In New Commissioners by mcmaurice20(m): 6:21am On May 19, 2015 |
By Vincent Ujumadu Awka—Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State yesterday swore in five new commissioners for the state. Those appointed are M. Okey Moka (Finance), Mrs. Gladys Ilobi (Special Duties), Mr. Afam Mbanefo (Agriculture), Mr. Frank Offor (Housing and Urban Development) and Dr. Uju Nwogu (Information, Culture and Tourism). The fate of the former commissioners occupying the portfolios assigned to the new commissioners remained uncertain as the governor was silent on them. Obiano’ Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony in Awka, the governor said they should see their appointments as a privilege. He told them: “Serving under this administration is an honour for yourselves and we look up to you to assist in moving the state forward. What you have just signed is your job specification with time frame for performance monitoring, which is usually every100 days. So you will only stay as part of the team if you are found worthy.” Administering the oath, the Director of Civil Litigation, Mr Emeka Ike, explained that the appointment was in accordance with the provision of Sections 190 and 194 of the Constitution of Nigeria. Responding on behalf of the commissioners, Nwogu expressed gratitude to the governor for finding them worthy to serve the state, promising that they would maintain the tempo of development. She pledged their dedication in ensuring the success of Governor Obiano’s four pillars of development in the areas of agriculture, oil and gas, trade and commerce and industrialization.

Nairaland / General / Gov Willie Obiano To Reshuffle Cabinet by mcmaurice20(m): 4:34pm On May 02, 2015 |
Rumour that Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, may reshuffle his cabinet after the 2015 general elections ended late Thursday evening as the Governor forwarded the name of the Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Chinwe Nwebiri, and five others as proposed new commissioners to the House of Assembly for confirmation. Others who were nominated by Obiano are Frank Ofor, Afam Mbanefo, Mark Okoye, Dr. Mary Nwogu and Mrs. Amaka Ilobi. Nwebiri was the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the April 11 Federal Legislative Houses of Assembly election to represent Ogbaru Federal Constituency, which he lost. At the moment, he represents Ogbaru state constituency II in the House of Assembly. The lawmakers while confirming four of the nominees, initially objected to the confirmation of Okoye on the ground that he was below 30 years of age which was contrary to the provisions of the 1999 constitution as amended. However, some members of the house who were favourably disposed to Okoye stood in his defence and insisted that he should be confirmed alongside others. |
