As millions of Nigerians groan under the untold hardship created by the unending fuel scarcity, some individuals are thriving in adversity. Popularly referred to as ‘Black marketers’, they seem to emerge from the cracks of society everytime PMS becomes scarce, sporting various colored jerry cans and short hoses. You can spot them on almost every major road in every major city in Nigeria. Most of them made up of unemployed youth referred to as ‘Area Boys’, it’s not unusual to find a few women also hawking fuel along the road. These ‘street entrepreneurs’ are taking advantage of the situation, investing time and effort in the wee hours of the morning acquiring their product from colluding fuel attendants, and then selling it in daytime at double the price. A 5-liter keg of fuel which would normally cost N430 at pump price sells for N1000 or more on the black market. That’s over a 100% profit. There are even tales of large bunkers of fuel in parts of Surulere and Mushin were the fuel attendants guarantee a steady supply of fuel in exchange for a ‘percentage mark up’ on the returns. As the people of Lagos braced up for the Easter holidays, Eclipse live Africa hosted its citizens to the biggest beach party of the year “Gidi Fest 2016”. The nocturnal walk home through Lagos would take him up to two hours, after he had played all night at the West End Coliseum, a popular nightclub on Lagos Island. After trekking the 1,640-foot-long Carter Bridge across the lagoon back to the mainland, he would take a break for some window shopping at Bhojsons. This Indian-owned store used to be the place where well-to-do Lagosians bought their wedding gifts. Nowadays the shop windows that once showcased watches and jewelry are bricked shut, as Bhojsons sells motorbikes and tricycles in a showroom that vaguely smells of the dried crayfish sold at the adjacent Oyingbo market. From Bhojsons, the musician would stroll down the rail track all the way to his rented room in Mushin, some three miles north. It was the mid-1960s and the young man, Sunday Ishola Adeniyi Adegeye, still an unknown artist, could not afford the cab fare home. Today, 69 and long known as King Sunny Adé, he is a wealthy man and one of Nigeria’s most famous musicians. He became the worldwide icon of juju, the Yoruba praise music driven by the rhythm of the talking drum accompanied by Hawaiian-style guitar. After gaining local popularity during the ’70s oil boom, when the Lagos elite invited Sunny Adé and His African Beats to spice up their parties, he started touring internationally in the 1980s, having been called “The New Bob Marley” by his agents. He was nominated for a Grammy twice, but never broke through on the world stage. Among world-music lovers, however, his fame is substantial. Sunny Adé, who grew up in Osogbo in Osun State, went to Lagos in 1963 to be a musician, after lying to his mother that he had been accepted to a university there. The metropolis on the Atlantic became his home, and his career prospered. For The Rest, Click Here - http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/03/20/running-deep-the-roots-of-king-sunny-ade/

Lina Iris Viktor inspires amazement and wonder with her art! She seems to channel inspiration from the Egyptians of old, but with an incredibly modern twist that makes her art her own. Her signatures are intricate geometric shapes in electric blue, black, white and gold. And when she photographs with her art, it’s another thing altogether. She simply blends in, and adds a new dimension which you didn’t think was missing, but which ends up blowing you away. Originality oozes out of her creations. When we look at her art, we wonder if she thinks in shapes and lines of blue, black, white and gold. “Lina Viktor chooses to work in a strictly limited world – it is a mythical one of her creation existing within the zen-influenced, blurred lines of the real and the imagined. Governed by a purist color palette, her work considers the natural laws, hermetic philosophies, mathematic & scientific principles, and seeks to instill a divine order to all around her.” For The Rest Of Lina Victor's Art. This topic is not one I was thinking of writing about anytime soon, but listening in to a group of young women having a conversation around it, I decided to see if I can make sense out of what they were discussing. They were talking generally about domestic abuse, and one asked if the other two had hit a man before as she had never done it and would consider any woman doing that as one with a death wish. One of them replied she had actually slapped a guy she was dating back in school and when she was asked the reaction of the guy, she said the guy was shocked and he simply walked away probably because he knew the gravity of what he did and he knew he deserved even more than the slap he had just received. Well…! Truth is domestic violence or abuse against men is not what anyone wants to really discuss though it has been around for centuries but has been a largely hidden issue. It is a common knowledge that it isn’t just women who are victims of domestic abuse, there are abused men too and they live in our society. Domestic abuse against men takes many of same forms as it does against women; physical violence, intimidation, threats, sexual, emotional, psychological, verbal, property damage and social isolation are some forms of abuse men go through as well. And like some of their female counterparts, abused men often face many barriers to disclosing their abuse. In Nigeria, we have many support groups and services for abused women but I have not seen any of such for the men who are being abused, mainly because there is a perpetual bias against these men and little understanding of the issues the face. I have heard about women who poured acid on their men because they cheated, some cut off their man’s penis, and not too long ago, a picture of a burning Range Rover car surfaced on the social media, the story behind it was that the owner (a man) cheated/broke up with his babe and the babe set his car on fire. Last month, Freeze of Cool FM posted pictures of injuries he sustained from violent abuse from his ex-wife, but was there outrage? No, rather people were abusing him especially on blogs’ comment section. Some asked him to grow up; some called him a drama queen, some called him an outright liar, while some simply call him a weak man – most of these comments were from women. Whenever I date, I always try to look out for your level of aggression; I have always believed an overly aggressive person will someday become an abusive person. Of course you don’t have to believe in what I believe in, but when you are too aggressive even to other people, we can’t even go far. I remember one ex of mine I dated when I was 20. I just rented my first apartment – a very small room somewhere in Agege and was feeling like a big boy. One day we had an argument over some neighbor (a girl) she claimed I was talking to and she wasn’t comfortable with; the argument became serious, then she became wild, turning the apartment upside down, tore my calendar into shreds, yanked my clothes off the hangar, tore the nylon containing foodstuff, threw the kerosene stove outside and was still looking for other things to destroy but there was none, because I didn’t have any electronic gadget- not even a transistor radio. I allowed her to cool off and after about two weeks, I broke up with her. I am not a crazy person and I would rather let crazy people date one another. Acclaimed newcomer Fiston Mwanza Mujila has dazzled the literary world with his debut novel, a riotous look at the underbelly of life rarely featured in sub-saharan African literature. Set in a bar in an unnamed Congolese mining town, Tram 83 follows poet Lucien and his escapades with a cast of writers, drunkards, drug dealers and dreamers. Published in English by Jacaranda Press and translated by Roland Glasser, Mujila’s novel has been described by the Rumpus as a tale that “delights in absurdities” and extracts “epic poetry from violence, despair and distraction”. Speaking to Africa is a Country, Mujila said: “I wanted Tram to be able to represent a form of exploitation and neocolonialism that happens throughout Africa, not just in the Congo.” Tram83 – extract IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE STONE, AND THE STONE PROMPTED OWNERSHIP, AND OWNERSHIP A RUSH, AND THE RUSH BROUGHT AN INFLUX OF MEN OF DIVERSE APPEARANCE WHO BUILT RAILROADS THROUGH THE ROCK, FORGED A LIFE OF PALM WINE, AND DEVISED A SYSTEM, A MIXTURE OF MINING AND TRADING. Northern Station. Friday. Around seven or nine in the evening. “Patience, friend, you know full well our trains have lost all sense of time.” The Northern Station was going to the dogs. It was essentially an unfinished metal structure, gutted by artillery, train tracks, and locomotives that called to mind the railroad built by Stanley, cassava fields, cut-rate hotels, greasy spoons, bordellos, Pentecostal churches, bakeries, and noise engineered by men of all generations and nationalities combined. It was the only place on earth you could hang yourself, defecate, blaspheme, fall into infatuation, and thieve It was the only place on earth you could hang yourself, defecate, blaspheme, fall into infatuation, and thieve without regard to prying eyes. Indeed, an air of connivance hung ever about the place. Jackals don’t eat jackals. They pounce on the turkeys and partridges, and devour them. According to the fickle but ever-recurring legend, the seeds of all resistance movements, all wars of liberation, sprouted at the station, between two locomotives. And as if that weren’t enough, the same legend claims that the building of the railroad resulted in numerous deaths attributed to tropical diseases, technical blunders, the poor working conditions imposed by the colonial authorities – in short, all the usual clichés. Northern Station. Friday. Around seven or nine. He’d been there nearly three hours, jostling with the passers-by as he waited for the train to arrive. Lucien had been at pains to insist on the sense of time, and on these trains that broke all records of derailment, delay, and overcrowding. Requiem had better things to do than wait for this individual who, with the passing of the years, had lost all importance in his eyes. Ever since he’d turned his back on Marxism, Requiem called everyone who deprived him of his freedom of thought and action armchair communists and slum ideologues. He had merchandise to deliver, his life depended on it. But the train carrying that son of a bitch Lucien was dragging its wheels. Recently actress Viola Davis made history at this year’s Emmy Awards, and during her moving acceptance speech she shed light on how women of color are not offered the same opportunities as others within the world of Hollywood. Backpacking this notion, two photographers, Senegalese Omar Victor Diop and French-American Antoine Tempé, have also decided to voice their opinion on the diversity issue within entertainment by recasting iconic onscreen characters with the faces of black models. According to Huffpost Black Voices, back in 2013 the duo teamed up for their project [re-]Mixing Hollywood with the aim of using classic American and European films to create more dynamic images of African people. The collaborative effort created a series made of 20 images captured throughout Senegal and the Ivory Coast. “Cinema is probably the form of art that is the most universal, as it transcends all barriers, be they geographic, cultural, or racial,” Diop and Tempé shared in their artist manifesto. From Breakfast At Tiffany’s to The Matrix, check out a few of the reimagined images below. For The Rest Of The Pictures, Click HERE: http://farabale.co/2015/09/30/a-photographer-reimagines-iconic-movies-with-black-characters/

It’s always anxiety inducing when someone reboots one of the classics. And with Jungle Book, anyone who tackles it is not only trying to give a fresh take on the 1967 Disney animated feature, they’re also charged with doing justice to the Rudyard Kipling book as well. This is something I have noticed with Lagos events and the their guests. When it is black tie or say pseudo-corporate, say maybe a fashion show or maybe a thing by a comedian most Lagos citizens are like Spartans called to war, dressed to the nines, ready to slay the red carpet and sometimes even the photographer. But when it is a concert by the biggest rapper on the street? Well, the regular I-Must-Make-Bellanaija-frontpage event-goers in are thrown. What do you wear? Do I go easy, casual, or dress it down? How far down do i dress? Or should I just do full postal and go j-lo-grammy-red-carpet-crazy? The result of this confusion is usually hilarious and forms the butt of today’s post: the fashion fail of the #OLIC red carpet which is actually unfair because there really wasn’t a red carpet. Apologies to anyone if this rubs them the wrong way. It’s all simple fun.
