Brands Beware. All the past evils have come back to haunt you in the #BrandSpoof 2016 edition. Nigerian graphic artists and designers are fighting back for the consumers (or just being generally silly!) with the #BrandSpoof hashtag, powered by the naughty people behind Layrz magazine. This year, troll levels are breaking the richter scale and I almost fell from my table compiling what i think are my best spoofs! No Brands, local and international were spared by the brutal strokes strikes of these highly talent troubled artists. Enjoy more from the #BrandSpoof2016 on layrz_ng Instagram Timeline HERE - http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/08/28/no-brand-is-safe-in-layrz_ng-brand-spoof-challenge/

http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/07/29/nosa-igbinedion-releases-the-series-yemoja-the-rise-of-the-orisha/ An African Superhero series Yemoja ‘Rise of the Orisha’ is set to be released on the 31st of July 2016. Yemoja is an original six-part story of a shared fictional universe made up of a pantheon of African deities known as Orisha. The creator of the story, Nosa Igbinedion, stated why it was important for him to embark on this project. “Yemoja and the Orisha, in general, are followed by millions around the world so it was important for me to be authentic to this African culture. But also I think we have managed to create a really surreal and unique take on the superhero genre while building out the first African superhero cinematic universe. It hasn’t been done but that’s why it’s so exciting and so necessary”. Yemoja is a story about Amina who was a young doctor living her dream but her world crumbles before her eyes when a politician’s son dies under her supervision. Possessed by the water goddess, Amina must now find a way to prove her innocence before things get out of hand. Yemoja, ‘Rise of the Orisha’ features the fresh new talent of Symara Templeman in the lead role alongside Derek Oppong and Nigerian actress Yvonne Hays. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi2mgx31BSs

Choc City artiste Koker is definitely on the rise. His last two singles are major hits and his fanbase encompasses a broad local spectrum. A lot of them were present for his Afropolitan Vibes feature last weekend and did he nail it or what! With the help of the super excited audience who screamed “Kolewerk” on cue and the cool environs of freedom park, the performance was everything that was promoted. http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/07/19/in-case-you-missed-it-watch-choc-citys-koker-at-afropolitan-vibes-last-week/

On July 10, Eunice Elisha, a deaconess at the Divine Touch Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Old NEPA Road, Phase 4, Kubwa, was reportedly beheaded and stabbed in the stomach and leg by her killers. A statement by the police has however already debunked that claim. It was learnt that her killers left her in the pool of her blood and carefully put her “severed head on her Bible, with megaphone and cell phone beside her dead body” but the Commissioner of Police in a statement said her body was intact. Her dead body was discovered by the residents who alerted the police and evacuated her to the police station where her husband went to identify her. The husband of the deceased, Pastor Olawale Elisha while narrating the blow-by-blow account of the incident to journalists when the wife of Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo paid a condolence visit, said that his wife had gone out to preach in the neighbourhood at about 5 am only for him to hear the report of her murder. for more, click HERE - http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/07/12/on-the-death-of-eunice-elisha-and-the-banning-of-public-preaching-in-nigeria/

Divorce in the past took a lot of years, many got tired and just moved on with their separate lives. Others simply never remarried and life was GOOD. Regardless of how great a marriage is, it will end someday either by choice or by death. For those caught in an irreparable marriage and find it unbearable to wait till old age sets in and ‘death does them part’, Lagos state is the place to be, it is at the fore in providing Court connected mediation in Nigeria. You may wonder how easy it is for Public figures and celebrities to wrap up their marriages under 24months or less, wake up to the reality, it is shockingly easy these days, if you are legally married under the Marriage Act, all you need to do is follow these two steps and gracefully put an end your irreparable marriage. On the other hand, if you are not legally married all you need is a new apartment, a job if you haven’t gotten one and your whole new life awaits you. The successes of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Skype to mention a few has not come without its pros and cons. Many celebrities have enjoyed immense benefits from these platforms – sales, promotion, interaction and engagement directly with their fans. However, some of the bitter pills these platforms have left many celebrities to chew includes the criminal impersonation by internet fraudsters. The protective screen of anonymity on some platforms provide combined with ignorance on behalf of some ‘promoters’ has made it easy for wily individuals to interact personally with their would-be-victims before sweet-talking them into parting with hard earned money. The aim of this piece is to establish who a celebrity is, what it means to be an impersonator and consequently outlining the steps taken by fraudsters to achieve success in their impersonating ‘trade’ of public figures online. Hopefully, this information will help the reader become knowledgeable of such nefarious activities and employ a level of wariness whenever he/she comes in contact with such social media profiles. A celebrity is a person whose distinct role and contribution in his area of specialty has been noticed by the public, is unique and his action stands him out from the pool of crowd that engage in the same endeavor. A musician, a politician, an actress, a fashion icon etc. For this fact, brands, businesses and individuals are drawn to such individuals because of their fan following to partner on various marketing, media, PR or even speaking activities. This would require making contact with said ‘celebrity’. In Nigeria, most celebrities aren’t in the Yellow Pages or even listed in a booking agency, so this ‘contact process’ usually (if no one knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who knows Wizkid’s cousin’ss gateman) starts with a simple Google search, email and or maybe a phone call to a ‘number’ listed on their social media. This major loop-hole in the contact process is the space that our impersonator and would-be-victim usually are introduced to themselves. They say it’s better to stick with what you know but this doesn’t stop many people from trying their hands out on new things. Some of our actors, we agree are multi-talented and have over time and after making a name for themselves, delved into music to try to conquer that space too. This new venture did not quite work out well for most of them and they eventually gave up and went back to their first love, acting. Genevieve Nnaji https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z40NCeAarF8 She is definitely one of Nigeria’s leading actresses and has won several awards to that effect. She released a track a few years back ‘No more’ and even made a video for it. The song gained a lot of traction but for all the wrong reasons as people wondered why she decided to go into music when she has already ‘made it’ in acting by Nigerian standard. She hasn’t done anything in that light since then. Jim Iyke https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hLpQhAJgTg He is also one of Nigeria’s long time actors who has proven himself and garnered a wide fan base. He tried to break into the Nigerian music industry with a single ‘who am I’ featuring 2face Idibia and another single ‘Born To Do This’ in which he featured Mike Word and Puffy T. None of this seemed to make its mark in the music industry and he has since gone back to strictly acting. John Okafor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmcKiNU53Ug He is the well know Mr Ibu, best known for his comedy and humorous actions. He released his album and video a few years ago but we can’t say for sure if only his village people bought it or not. He ended up sticking with what he is good at, acting. Shan George https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXDJ3TttRMU She is an actress of note and has been acting for a very long time and has a large fan base. She dabbled into music and had a number of tracks and an album which couldn’t cope in the competitive music industry in Nigeria. She has also backed off music for acting which she is good at. When starting a new business a lot of things come into play, such as hard work, smart work, money, sometimes mentorship and it may seem like it adds little or nothing, words of inspiration from people that surround you go a long way in giving you that extra buzz to reach your goals. I never met Muhammad Ali but his influence on people near and far, including me, was immense. I never saw him fight live but stories and old videos make up what I know about boxing’s greatest. It was clear that a lot of his fights started way before he got in the ring with his opponent. Ali was a stickler for preparation and he realized something a lot of his opponents didn’t: That a boxing match wasn’t just a physical fight but a mental and psychological one and for that reason Ali made it a point to intimidate, confuse, confound his opponents way before he got in the ring with them. A lot of these lessons I have tried to apply in life and career and while some have worked, some haven’t but they all make really great lessons from The Greatest Boxer. Quitting Is For Losers http://farabaleweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/nigeria-working-people.jpg “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’” Starting a new business is nowhere near easy; it takes courage, resilience and consistency to build a brand that can stand the test of time. Many a times the thought of abandoning a project for a new one comes to mind. But if you remain focused and keep working hard you shall rip the fruits of your labour. Do Your Research And Homework http://farabaleweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/hustle1.jpg “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses—behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.” Before jumping into any business, a lot of research should go into it, do a background check about the business to know if it is what you can handle or not. It saves you from chaos when you eventually step into the ring to compete against others who are already running the business. Ten tips to live by from a self-proclaimed authority on moving around Lagos by bus. Trust me, I’ve been doing it for years. 1. Never sit right next to the driver. Everything from sweat to musty face towels and loose change will touch you. Your head will be the bridge over which interactions between him and the conductor will take place. Your head will suffer. Sufferhead. 4. Window seat available? Take it The closer you are to fresh air, the better for your humanity. Besides, it’s a vantage point from which purchases can be made in slow-moving traffic. + Window seats are also ideal spots for your watch to be snatched off your wrist. Keep your hands inside the bus. 5. Sweaty People. People will wipe sweat off their bodies without any concern for those around them. Noses will be picked and boogers flicked indiscriminately. Fortify your mind and keep your mouth firmly shut. 7. Electronic Devices This one is a no-brainer: Don’t display your phone or tablet. That’s like putting up an electronic billboard calling thieves to crash your life’s party. Leave the first in your pocket and the second in your bag (not some case). Ignore calls or use a hands-free. + If you have to make or receive a phone call, don’t discuss personal details such as your itinerary. As far as I’m concerned, the writing was pretty clear on the wall for rapper Milli. I kind of knew he was going to get kicked off Choc City from the first time he was announced as a Choc City Signee. And the reason was simple. His style was just a bit way out there. Not ‘out there’ in a bad way, but just different enough to weird out the average Nigerian and Milli is learning the hard way that most Nigerian music fans don’t like ‘different’. They’re pretty cool with ‘Usual’. Fortunately/Unfortunately for Milli, he’s a very, very, very unusual kind of artiste. Throwing further light on the rather short, terse and politically correct press release by Choc City announcing the divorce from Milli, the rapper took to social media to put some context to what transpired behind closed doors in the days leading to his ignominious departure. In Milli’s version, the big bad boss is none other than MI, African Rapper Number 1, the king of Naija Hip Hop. A title whose crown has been under contention with the meteoric rise of Olamide, Reminisce and Phyno. According to Milli: “I created Unlooking in a really unique way. When I first wrote it, the verses were different, not Pidgin, but M.I asked me to rewrite the song, and had me change it from English into Pidgin, to be more “street”… so I did, even though I never enjoyed remaking the song. But I wanted to make him happy so I would get all the support I needed by the time Unlooking was coming out. Unfortunately, after so much time rewriting it, when I finally dropped the song, he didn’t support me and Unlooking wasn’t pushed.” Milli, then, after departing MI’s Choc City label decides to remix the original ‘Unlooking’ track, change the album art to include a broken crown with four distinct claw marks? A symbolic message maybe indicating he’s coming for the crown or just art for art’s sake? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z50Lfc_MFdk More from Mill’s social media comments: “He (MI) was telling people that Unlooking was just 60% of what it could have been, and that the only reason people liked it was because it was in Pidgin. There was no budget for promotion, so I had to hustle by myself, but I am just one person and I can’t win if my own people don’t believe in me…” “And all this while, M.I told me to be more like this or that artist, be more “street”, and people told me that he kept saying that my music wasn’t gonna fly in Naij… It’s like they had decided my sound wasn’t going to work before they even gave it a chance. It made me really, really sad…” For the rest of this story, click HERE - http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/06/09/milli-doesnt-have-the-naija-sound-and-thats-okay/ |

“Your social media profile is an extension of your personality… be it an illusion or reality…for me instagram has really helped promote my works so much that I get commissions and responses in real time. I might not get 10000 likes on that picture …but I bet you that I get 2 to 3 business proposals… imagine if I advertise…the possibilities are endless”….. Collyde Prime. (Instagram: @Collydeprime) I never knew Nigeria had so many illustrators (good ones at that) until i joined the social media platform, Instagram. However, on facebook some illustrators have been active there too, displaying their fine works, but how come some of us don’t see them? Why is it easier to spot their handiwork on Instagram? Instagram is Image-Centric Instagram is a social media platform that is driven by images, more images than text; as a matter of fact your text can’t go without an image. So users get to see these illustrated images without too many words. It also brings out the creativity in the illustrator, because you have to pass a concrete message in one picture. Even Facebook and Twitter encourage users to share images rather than just text. There are some cool illustrators out there some may not necessarily have a large number of following, but have claimed to have secured a number of paid commissions off Instagram, from people who have interest in their style of art. “As an illustrator, Instagram has been very helpful, especially since I get instant feedback on my posts when I make them. It’s even helped me secure a number of paid commissions from people who have interest on my particular art style. Things can only get better”….. Martin “Ufo” Avwenagha. You’ve seen all the jokes about African Parents but have you seen shot, cut and directed by one of Hollywoods best? Probably not. Way back in 2012, Damilare Sonoiki released a documentary entitled “The West” about the culture of Southwest Alief, Texas (which now has over 200,000 views on youtube). He graduated from Harvard University and became a writer on ABC’s hit show ‘Black-Ish’. Now, he has created this hilarious comedy ‘African Booty Scratcher’. African Booty Scratcher is a story about a Nigerian immigrant family in America trying to balance giving their son a better life and at the same time ensuring he maintains traditional values. Is this too much for the child to handle? This trailer is proof that African parents can be a handful, both home and abroad. In what looks like a lackluster response to the #ShareYourHoeStory trend that nearly broke the internet last week or maybe it was just the response of the internet to the #TeamTiwa and #TeamTeeBillz saga that rocked Naija cyberspace, a new #tag surfaced a few days ago with Nigerian men sharing reasons why they should ‘sack’ their girlfriends. With the first tweet by Twitter influencer @TweetOracle, Many men quickly hopped unto the #tag but to be honest it wasn’t as nearly as disruptive and informative as the #HoeStory trend, or as catastrophic as the Tiwa and TeeBillz drama. Laolu Senbanjo is a trained lawyer, singer and a visual artist who has put his creativity to good use by drawing from the inspiration of his traditional heritage. His body work which he titled ‘Sacred Art Of The Ori’ is an incredible piece of art which speaks nothing less than the roots of his Yoruba culture, the origin of a practice derived from a spiritual Yoruba ritual. “In my language, Yoruba ‘Ori’ literally means your essence, your soul, your destiny,” Nigerians went crazy over that on social media because not only did his hard work and creativity get him signed onto Nike, he was also the artist behind the body art in Beyonce’s music video ‘Lemonade’. His work has literally taken African art beyond its borders. And we are mighty proud of our artist and our culture. When we talk about the most expensive cultures to marry from in Nigeria, it refers to spending well over five hundred thousand naira to about three million or more to tick yes to all that is listed on the ‘traditional marriage list’ usually drawn by the community or kinsmen of the bride. One thing about these cultures (the most expensive cultures to marry from in Nigeria) is that the parents of the bride can hardly influence the list to favor their son –in-law to be. These are the 10 most expensive cultures to marry from in Nigeria; 1 – The Mbaise People of Imo State The Mbaise people are found in Imo state part of Nigeria and they occupy three local government areas in Imo State (Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise and Ezinihitte Mbaise). The major cities of Mbaise people are Ezi na ihite, Ahiara. Agbaaja, Oke Uvuru. The Mbaise people are known for their quest for higher education, hence the large numbers of graduates and professionals amongst them. The Mbaise culture is amongst the most expensive cultures to marry from in Nigeria because of the numerous components that make up their traditional marriage list. As a matter of fact, the more educated the bride is, the more expensive the marriage list becomes. 2 – The Ngwa People of Abia State The Ngwa people are found in Abia state of Nigeria and they constitute the largest and most populous sub – ethnicity or clan in the whole of the south – eastern part of Nigeria. Anyone man who seeks to marry an Ngwa lady must be ready to fulfill all that is listed in the traditional marriage list. The culture of the Ngwa people is said to be amongst the most expensive cultures to marry from in Nigeria because of the many things the groom is expected to do for the bride’s family and for the entire community where the bride hails from. 3 – The Nkpa People of Abia State The Nkpa people of Abia state are found in Bende local government of Abia state. Marrying an Nkpa lady is truly expensive especially if you are not from Nkpa. The list for the traditional marriage rite is designed in such a way that it is cheaper for and Nkpa man that is getting married to an Nkpa lady; but if a man who is not from Nkpa is seeking for the hands of an Nkpa lady, he must be ready to organize a marriage ceremony that accommodates the entire community, and also must buy gifts not only for the parents of the bride, but also for all the kinsmen (Umu nna) and their daughters (Umu Ada). The truth is that by the time the groom is done fulfilling the list, he would have spent well over seven hundred thousand naira. 4 – The Mbano People of Imo State Mbano is a community that is located in the Southeastern part of Nigeria and they are part of the Igbo people of Nigeria.
