Music/RadioGorrilaz Confirm New Album,recording To Start September by Mcwrath02(op): 8:06pm On Jul 19, 2015
Almost six months after animator Jamie Hewlett announced the return of Gorillaz by teasing some new artwork on Instagram, the very busy Damon Albarn has revealed he’ll start to record a new album in September. Speaking to Australian TV show ABC 7.30, Damon said: “I’m starting recording in September for a new Gorillaz record. I’ve just been really, really busy so I haven’t had a chance. I’d love to just get back in to that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week.”

Gorillaz last album came back in 2010 with The Fall. Watch the video for “Phoner To Arizona” below.

CultureHome Away From Home: 10 Photos Of Totally Nigerian Things Found UK by Mcwrath02(op): 10:28am On Jul 16, 2015
These photos were not taken in Mushin, Surulere or even the high-brow areas of Lekki or VI. They are pictures taken by a Nigerian student studying in the UK, photos that depict Nigerians living like they never even left home. And some instances with the double-decker bus with the Winner’s Chapel advert almost makes you wonder if you’re Ikorodu road!

A Nigerian birthday party is not complete anywhere in the World if it there is not jollof rice.

No, this is not Shitta Amala in Surulere. This is an actual Buka in the UK.

CelebritiesWhat Would Jesus Say To Kim Kardashian? (must Read) by Mcwrath02(op): 7:33am On Jul 15, 2015
Kim Kardashian has made $45 million simply by allowing cameras to follow her around on the set of her reality TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians. But that wasn’t enough money or fame for the 33-year-old socialite.

Last week, she tried to “break the Internet” by posing nude on the front of Papermagazine and then sending the images to her 25 million Twitter followers.

The Internet didn’t break, but I’m pretty sure it groaned—along with the millions of people around the world who didn’t want to see Kardashian’s derriere or hear the resulting discussion about why this woman is so desperate for attention.

This is not the first time a famous actress or model has taken her clothes off to pose for a magazine cover. But even secular critics viewed Kardashian’s stunt as shameless and self-serving. It wasn’t about art or political protest. It was just an expensive selfie designed to keep Kardashian’s brand alive and her income flowing in.

What’s really strange about this incident is that Kim Kardashian claims a form of Christian faith. Many months ago Kim and her now-husband, rap singer Kanye West, began visiting Trinity Church, an Assemblies of God congregation in Miami pastored by Rich Wilkerson Sr. The celebrity couple asked Wilkerson’s son, Rich Jr., who serves as associate pastor, to perform their lavish wedding ceremony in Italy.

The younger Wilkerson, who is 30, got a place in the media spotlight because of the wedding, and as a result, he and his wife, DawnCheré, have agreed to do a reality show on the Oxygen network. The program, to be called The Wilkersons, will take a lighthearted look at the young couple and their ministry to young adults.

Kardashian has told reporters she believes her typical fan is a 15- or 16-year-old girl who loves fashion. She even runs a store in Los Angeles that sells merchandise aimed at teenage girls. Yet Kardashian doesn’t see anything inconsistent with the idea of mentoring young teens while she’s posing nude on social media.

I’m tempted to lash out in self-righteous indignation at Kim’s behavior, but I’ve experienced God’s mercy for my own sins—and I know Jesus has a lot more patience than I do when people mess up. I’m glad Kardashian and her husband have reached out to Trinity Church, and I pray they will be exposed to the message of Christ there. I also pray that Rich Wilkerson and his wife will have the right words to say to Kim and Kanye.

What would Jesus say to Kim Kardashian? I think He’d say the same thing He says to all of us, regardless of how famous (or infamous) we are or how ridiculous we act in public. Jesus died for everybody—rich or poor, nude or clothed, self-absorbed or humble. The ground at the foot of His cross is level, and He offers the same free gift of salvation to those who are willing to accept His terms:

Repent. Jesus said: “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:5). He didn’t have a soft message. He called sinners to repentance because sin is what separates us from God. And He didn’t just say this to prostitutes and drunkards and reality TV stars; He required smug religious people to repent too.

Believe. Jesus’ love is amazing! He offers to wipe out all record of our sins and give us eternal life in heaven, no matter how awful we behaved—or how many vulgar photos there are to prove it. All we have to do is put our trust in Him, and He changes us on the inside. Jesus promised: “He who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment” (John 5:24).

Deny yourself. Jesus told His followers: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). You can never be a disciple of Jesus if you are focused on self. This is one reason Jesus said rich people have a harder time getting into His kingdom. The same can be said for people who are famous. Selfishness can keep you out of heaven because it makes you think you are God.

I have compassion for Kim Kardashian because I know she’s addicted to fame. She grew up in the media spotlight (her dad was O.J. Simpson’s lawyer) and her mother pushed her to use publicity to make money. People who get too much attention end up feeding off of it—and it makes them desperate. So desperate that they would strip for the cameras to stay in the public eye.

Rather than judging Kardashian, I’m praying she will discover true faith and allow Jesus to clothe her with His salvation.

Culture7 Things You Must Try In Lagos by Mcwrath02(op): 7:56pm On Jul 08, 2015
From the traffic to the heat, Lagos can be a ball of stress. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Hidden in our city are some wonderful gems that you just have to indulge in. Here are seven things you absolutely must try if you find yourself in Lagos, a Lagos bucket list of sorts.

Wahalarita @ 355
Nobody really knows what goes in a wahalarita. We know it gets us drunk and makes us do things we regret. That much we’re sure of.

I suspect it’s a mishmash of a few common margarita flavours. If that’s the case, I find the name incredibly brilliant. “Wahala” is a pidgin English word meaning trouble that is used commonly by Nigerians, so a wahalarita is definitely ideal for when you really want to be up to no good.

Amala @ White House
I have this little theory: if you want delicious authentic food, go to the hole-in-the-wall spots. You want good Tex Mex in Texas, go to dodgier looking spots in San Antonio. If you want proper amala, go to White House. This is the quintessential Lagosian gastronomic experience. Have doubts? Ask any Lagosian on the street, White House amala is a state treasure.

Frozen Yoghurt @ Cafe Jade
The space is a little weird as you need to go through a hair salon to get to the cafe upstairs, that then overlooks the parking lot and they only have one flavour (original tart). However, all of that is excusable because original tart is the most important froyo flavour and theirs is absolutely delicious. It’s infinitely better than that place which shall not be named.

Suya @ Glover Court
Glover Court is a Lagos institution. Your cool uncles took you here. Then, your big brother did. Then, you grew up and started coming here on your own. Glover Court suya is synonymous with Lagos street food.

You leave Lagos for a little bit and you just don’t crave suya generally, you crave “Glover Court suya”. And oh if you’re looking out for this place, the new street sign says “Clover Court” and not “Glover”. Yeah, I don’t know either.

CelebritiesFive African Female Scientists You Should Know About by Mcwrath02(op): 1:54pm On Jul 06, 2015
Recently, Nobel Prize winner Tim Hunt sparked controversy when he claimed that women should not be in science, as they can prove distracting to male scientists in the workplace. In protest of this, thousands of female scientists took to Twitter to post pictures of themselves at work under the Twitter hashtag, #DistractinglySexy. In light of this (as well as Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim’s background as a biologist), here are five African female scientists that you should know about.

1: Rapelang Rabana, Technologist, South Africa
Upon graduating in Business Science with Honors in Computer Science from the University of Cape Town, Rapelang Rabana co-founded Yeigo Communications, South Africa’s first development company that offered free VoIP mobile services. Through its success, it soon partnered with Telfree, a Swiss Telecommunications Company and Rapelang created a mobile learning app, ReKindle Learning. It is no wonder, then, that she has been listed in several awards such as Forbes’ 30 Under 30: Africa’s Best Young Entrepreneurs and Oprah Magazine’s O Power List 2012.

2. Nagwa Abdel Meguid, Geneticist, Egypt

Dr. Nagwa is a notable geneticist who has identified several genetic mutations that cause common syndromes such as the fragile X syndrome and Autism. In 2002, she won the L’Oreal UNESCO Award for Women in Science for Africa and the Middle East. Since then, she has set up clinics for children with special needs, as well as dealing with early intervention. She is also a member of several groups such as the Gender Research in Africa into Information Communication Technologies for Empowerment (GRACE), as well as Autism-Open Access, to name a few.

3. Juliana Rotich, Technologist, Kenya

In 2007, during Kenya’s post-election violence, Juliana Rotich co-founded a software platform,Ushahidi.com, where citizens could report incidences of violence and have them mapped out via Google Maps; this is now a trend in social media activism. She is also the founder of iHub, an innovation hub for other like-minded technologists, and Mobisoko, a mobile app marketplace. As if all that wasn’t enough, Juliana is also a TED Senior Fellow, was named among The Guardian’s 100 Top Women, and serves on the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Information Communications Technology.

Then at the height of her fame as an actress, Genny, as she’s popularly called, sought to leverage on her star status and branch into music. Unfortunately, the music venture was a colossal failure, at least in Nigeria.

Art, Graphics & VideoAde Adekola’s “icons Of A Metropolis” [art] by Mcwrath02(op): 9:03am On Jul 01, 2015
“Icons of a Metropolis” offers a non-judgmental look at 20 character archetypes – they are the ICONS. They are a creative force, a self-organizing and self-referential manifestation of the zenith of urban survival. The ICONs add colour, help to reflect our consciences, test our moral compasses and above all offer signals to the fragile points of the rapidly expanding ecosystem of a megacity. In their guise as evolutionary change agents they can be considered as the city planner’s guide or muse and as such are living mentors on the design requirements for mega cities.

One can ask if these icons fulfill a need created by vacuous institutions or whether they are just a manifestation of the rapid growth dynamic of the Metropolis. Either way the vacuum exists; the conditions for creative destruction are met and our ICONs thrive.

These characters are a creative force to be celebrated, for they transform life, fulfill needs, grease the wheels that turn mega city living into a unique blend of stage play (with all its genres) and self-purposed choreographed dance. It is this stage play and dance that the artworks presented here aim to heighten.

Music/RadioAll You Need To Know About On Air Personality Kemi Smallz by Mcwrath02(op): 11:05pm On Jun 30, 2015
Kemi Smallz, whose real name is Oluwakemi Itari Owatemi, is an On Air Personality at City FM Lagos. The ‘radio rat’, as she’s fondly called because of her small frame (5ft, to be precise!), is a graduate from University of Lagos, with a degree in English Literature. The 24-year-old has Yoruba, Bayelsa and Ibo roots, but she grew up in Lagos. Kemi’s vibrancy, fun spirit and her most infectious smile made her perfect for the entertainment industry, and able to stand out from the crowd!
Not only is this multimedia personality on the City’s airwaves, she auditioned for the MTV Base VJ Search in Nigeria, and was actually a finalist, but was not crowned the winner of the competition to become one of the faces of the well-known brand. That didn’t stop her though! She went on to seek further opportunities in the Nigerian radio, TV and online media industry.

PhonesPhones And Tablets Made In Osun State, Nigeria [photos] by Mcwrath02(op): 8:54pm On Jun 26, 2015
From a recent release from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as at February this year, there are 142.5million active mobile telephone lines in Nigeria. Every year, not less than 10 million lines are added to existing ones in an ever expanding national teledensity. This means that if a mobile phone has an average lifespan of three years, in the next three years, there will be a demand for 142.5 million phones, in addition to the new lines that would have been activated then. While it is practically impossible, in a capitalist world, for one manufacturer to corner this humongous market, we have the comparative advantage to capture a sizeable portion of it. No country in Europe, except Russia, has a market this big. This was our vision when we went into talks with RLG and we are happy today that the effort is bearing fruits.

Music/RadioAmerican Based Nigerian Rapper Tunde Olaniran Drops 'namesake' [music] by Mcwrath02(op): 2:21pm On Jun 26, 2015
For More Music Like This, visit http://farabale.co/2015/06/26/tunde-olaniran-namesake-music/ and http://farabale.co/
Tunde Olaniran’s 2014 EP Yung Archetype came to me out of nowhere, and it was a refreshing jolt of unpredictability, throwing together sounds from all over the musical canon and offering incisive, often funny takes on race, masculinity, the internet, and just about any other topic it could cram into its five tracks. Olaniran also impressed me when I saw him live a few months later, where he put on an elaborate budget pop star show complete with dancers and costume changes—far beyond the production values of most shows to grace the modest venue where it was held. With his ambitious, far-ranging vision and knack for visual flair—he has mentioned in interviews that he used to be known for keeping a fog machine in his trunk—Olaniran is someone who I have been checking for ever since.

And now he’s putting out an album! It’s called Transgressor, and I’m excited to announce it’s out August 7 on Quite Scientific. Today, he’s sharing the first song, “Namesake,” which takes a similar charged, jarring synth palette to Kanye West’s Yeezus and pairs it with Olaniran’s typically quippy sing-song. His lyrics tackle personal growth with lines about being black in London (Olaniran is of Nigerian descent, and he grew up in London, Germany, and Flint, Michigan), as well as punchlines such as “like Pakistan I seceded.” It also showcases the raw power of Olaniran’s voice, which is both majesterial and totally, relatably human on the hook of “If I can be me / then you can be yourself.” How dope is that message, my friends?

Over email, Olaniran explained, “‘Namesake’ is an emotional journey for me, and the energy of the track doesn’t travel in a straight line. It explodes, then simmers, then crackles, then gets white hot. It’s a reflection of how [I’m] choosing to exist in this world.”

Check out the cover art for Transgressor below (and pre-order here), along with a few upcoming live dates. August 7 is soon! Get excited. If Olaniran’s existing output is any indication,Transgressor is going to be wild and crazy and awesome. Check out the art, along with “Namesake,” below:

TV/MoviesGame Of Thrones’ Deadly Differences: The Show Vs. The Books by Mcwrath02(op): 8:30pm On Jun 24, 2015
HBO’s version of Game of Thrones has not hesitated to eliminate characters who are still breathing in the books.

All men must die. Any good Game of Thrones fan knows that. But lately more and more men—and women—seem to be dying sooner than George R. R. Martin might have originally intended.

HBO’s Game of Thrones series had already diverged from the books upon which they were based in important ways. But lately it seems that, especially with the publication date of the sixth book in the saga still unknown and the series needing to move past what’s already been written, the differences are getting deadlier. (Spoilers below.)

Most of the deaths that differ between books and show relate to minor characters. The most wrenching, of course, was Shireen Baratheon’s burning at the stake—in the books she’s still safe and sound at Castle Black. And in the season five finale, Myrcella Lannister is poisoned by the Red Viper’s paramour. In the books a rogue blade slices Myrcella’s ear off but the rest of her is intact and alive. And there is one significant change in the show concering a major character: Catelyn Stark, stabbed to death during the Red Wedding, remains dead in the show. In the books, however, she’s brought back to life, reaping vengeance as Lady Stoneheart.

Below, a list of some of the key differences.

CelebritiesTupac Reigns Supreme On Social Media Long After His Death by Mcwrath02(op): 8:14pm On Jun 24, 2015
http://farabale.co/2015/06/23/tupac-reigns-supreme-on-social-media-long-after-his-death/
“Life After Death” was the Grammy-nominated album that put Biggie on the map, but it’s Tupac Shakur who has the the most active social media life long after his own untimely death.

Tuesday would have been Tupac’s 44th birthday and even 20 years after his death, the rapper inspires more discussion among fans than his hip hop rivals. Up to 30 million Facebook users interact with Tupac’s fan page every month. That’s the same number as Dr. Dre’s official Facebook page and up to three times the amount of engaged fans on the Notorious B.I.G.’s Facebook page. Even in Iran, where Facebook is officially banned, Tupac’s unofficial Iranian fan page has over 6,000 likes. Tupac’s page actually ranks as the second most popular Facebook page among Biggie’s fans, second only to the Notorious B.I.G. himself. However, the reverse is not true. Most Tupac fans don’t share the same respect for Biggie.

Tupac’s Facebook fan base is also much more diverse than Biggie’s, with thousands of fans in Mexico City, Paris and São Paulo. Iranian hip hop blog “Gangsta Life” ranked two Tupac albums in their top 10 albums: “All Eyez On Me” came in second and “Greatest Hits” came in fourth place, both of which beat Biggie’s only listing, “Life After Death,” which ranked sixth on the blog.

Both deceased rappers had birthdays in the last 30 days. The hashtag #tupac was tweeted over 48,646 times during Pac’s birthday month, compared to 37,680 tweets that used Biggie’s most popular hashtag, #notoriousbig. The hashtag for Tupac’s surviving rival, Dr. Dre, was mentioned in less than 3,000 tweets in the same time period.

FashionTrend: Dashiki Fever by Mcwrath02(op): 10:50am On Jun 18, 2015
We offered you last year an article on print dashiki and the fact that it trend.
This year 2015, it seems that this is still the case. Wherever African prints have the coast, this print is appreciated and declined in several ways.

The best known names attributed to this form: Dashiki, Angelina, Addis Ababa. Myriam Makeba. A very recent appellation in DRC: Ya Mado. This appellation is in reference to Congolese musician Fabrigas and its title Ya Mado, where the clip features the musician and his dancers in a tunic with this form.
It was for the anecdote.

Since the print dashiki is still fashionable, it seemed interesting to propose new outfits offered by designers / brands and new looks.

Jokes EtcThe 5 Most Abused Words & Phrases In Nigerian Pop Culture by Mcwrath02(op): 9:59pm On Jun 07, 2015
for more awesome stuff, visit http://farabale.co/2015/06/07/the-5-most-abused-words-phrases-in-nigerian-pop-culture/

You know how the artist from that fairly known song is suddenly addressed with adjectives befitting; George Cloney, Beyonce or in our case Genevieve Nnaji and 2face Idibia? It is often absolutely cringe worthy. It just gets me thinking: Really? Why? ( even though every part of me wants to type WTF? )

In no particular order, these are the most over used and misappropriated words and phrases in our pop culture today;

Star – These days, it feels like all you need to be a star is: one or two red carpet appearances, a blogger friend to blow your trumpet and urhmm….. A struggling effort in music, acting, television and / or radio.

A- List – Don’t you just always wonder what makes an A-lister in Nigeria? Because it’s like every other person is one, hence the seeming difficulty in seeing through the blurred lines. Like, shouldn’t: talent, experience, appeal and (yes, style) count?

Super Star – I can honestly only think of two or three actors/musicians who can really pass for ‘super stars’ . But as usual, every body is one.

Brand Ambassador – Can we take it a step further and start calling them ‘spokespersons’ ? Because I am at my wit’s end with the now over used ‘Brand Ambassador’ .

Star Studded – Before I knew better, I’d hurriedly open any web link that says ‘…..Was A Star Studded Party’ just so to see the stars. Until, of course , my excitement always got dashed and shortened by who made up the ‘Star Studded Party’ .

CultureA History Of Naked Protests By African Women [photos] by Mcwrath02(op): 3:24pm On May 27, 2015
The African perception of nudity pre-colonisation is understood to have been more liberal than today’s Western view. Post colonisation however, majority of countries went through a 180 degree shift and now sit on the extreme right of the religious view.
Western and Eastern colonialists in Africa saw the undressed black woman as a symptom of the backwardness of the African culture and labeled her naked body as grotesque. Through clothing, imperial forces sought to edify black women, and confirm their own superiority by branding these women in their own clothing and removing substantiation of their primitive tradition. To this day, tabloid Western media reports of Africa will often picture a topless African woman with drooping breasts accompanied by her naked starving child to reiterate the ‘backwardness’ present in African culture.
In 2001, scientists working on a site in Kenya with a view to expanding the Tana River reserve there were met with over 300 naked women who protested their action. The report outlines how female public nudity is considered an ‘ill-omen’ in Kenyan communities. However it is important to note that this applies only in context, when the gesture is made only for the effect of the onlookers.

In standing up against settling colonial authority and their own indigenous men who were reveling in the euphoria of their new found power, African women embraced the goddess ideology of the woman and the giver and taker of life. In action, this developed into defense mechanisms such as flashing and deliberate public nudity, which would send out a bad omen to the aggressor.

TV/MoviesThis Short Film About ‘smartphone Dependence’ Will Make You Rethink Owning A Sma by Mcwrath02(op): 10:33am On May 18, 2015
A woman is so engrossed in her phone that she sits on her cat, crushing it. She rattles a chair, sending a cake flying into the face of the man behind her — who is, of course, too busy texting to notice. A doctor gives a patient an injection, but misses his butt, stabbing him in the head instead.

Fortunately, all of the above comes from an animation, not real life.

Min Alxe, a student at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, created “Life Smartphone,” a darkly funny commentary on our culture’s smartphone dependence. It shows different characters moving through the world and dying gruesome deaths while not paying attention to what’s around them.

Art, Graphics & VideoA Photographer’s Rare 20th Century Look At Africa by Mcwrath02(op): 8:06pm On May 09, 2015
Forty years after the death of Life magazine photojournalist Eliot Elisofon, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art is celebrating the legacy of the photographer who offered an extensive look at post–World War II Africa over several decades.

“If you look at the history of how Africa was represented in photography in the 20th century, you’d would be hard pressed to find someone who was more prolific in shooting photographs of Africa and had more of an impact than Elisofon,” said Amy Staples, the curator of ‘Africa ReViewed: The Photographic Legacy of Eliot Elisofon‘.

Elisofon went on 11 trips to the continent, including a tour as a war photographer in which he accompanied Gen. George Patton through North Africa and a four-month trip from Cape Town, South Africa, to Cairo in 1947 that culminated in a Life cover story. Elisofon’s images are significant for the way they helped change American perceptions of Africa in the 20th century, which had for the most part been informed by inaccurate literary and film representations. “He was looking for authenticity and despised these films like Tarzan and safari films. He really felt they were a disservice,” Staples said. “He wanted to illuminate what he considered to be the richness and the dignity and the beauty of African culture and society.”
