Since the death of the 55th Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba ll, on July 13, 2025, the issue of who succeeds the elegant and classy Oba has become a big challenge to the kingmakers and chiefs that are connected to the selection process. Oba Adetona, who joined his ancestors at the ripe age of 91 years after reigning for 65 years, was of the Anikinaiya royal family, one of the ruling houses in the ancient city which is the capital of the Ijebu nation. His death has paved way for the Fusengbuwa ruling house to present a suitable candidate to fill the vacant position. By the Ijebu tradition, four ruling houses; Fusengbuwa, Fidipote, Gbelegbuwa and Anikinaiya, rotate the Awujale position among themselves. Oba Adetona succeeded Oba Daniel Adesanya of the Gbelegbuwa ruling house who had succeeded Oba Ogunnaike Fibiwoga of the Fidipote ruling house in 1933. Since Oba Adetona joined the saints about 115 days ago, all eyes have been on the Fusengbuwa ruling house whose last shot at the highly revered stool was during the four-year reign of Oba Adenuga Folagbade (1925-1929) In keeping with the tradition, members of the (Fusengbuwa) ruling house at home and abroad have been busy engaging in activities towards making the right decision. They have had series of meetings and thrown open, among members of the family, the expression of interest in the position. The family has made moves to settle its internal feuds in the interest of presenting a widely acceptable candidate at the end of the day. Three factions of the family have emerged with Otunba Lateef Owoyemi heading one, Chief Dokun Ajidagba leading the second and Chief Fassy Yusuf heading the third. All of them have, however, assured the public of a free, fair and credible selection process. In response to the assurance of a level playing ground, about 30 princes have made their intentions known. Among them are: Prince Taiwo Otun; Otunba Deji Oshibogun; Otunba Biodun Onanuga; Hon. Olaseeni Ottun; Otunba Fatai Arowolo; Prince Adewale Alausa; Prince Ademola Aderibigbe; Chief Kunle Hassan; Otunba Shakiru Bello and Prince Lateef Adeleye. A female aspirant, Dr. Oluwakemi Onanuga, has also thrown her hat into the ring, hinging her decision on the historical fact that two women, Oba Gbadegun and Oba Rubakoye have occupied the Awujale position before in 1644 and 1749 respectively The game is still on as no candidate has yet been picked. However, speculations are rife that money has started exchanging hands in a concerted effort by some moneybags to influence the process and tilt the game in favor of certain players. The ‘powerfuls’ are believed to have started queuing behind some of the princes, using their connections and governmental influence to curry favor for their preferred candidate. Many of the shakers of the society are said to have stormed Ijebu-Ode with loads of money (local and foreign currency) and various gifts for the kingmakers, family leaders and members of the selection committee set up by the Ogun State government. In the aftermath of this, some of the “afobajes” and family members have started living large courtesy of the freebies while some are now cruising around in their new luxury jeep gifts Observers see this as a dangerous dimension that may likely compromise the process and cast a shadow on its outcome in flagrant disregard to the tradition of free, fair, transparent and credible selection process of the Ijebu people. It is also against the wishes of Oba Adetona who had warned the chiefs not to ‘commercialize’ the selection of his successor. The Kabiyesi was said to have handed the chiefs and afobajes the warning during a meeting in the twilight of his reign where he cursed whoever places money or any other form of inducement over merit “in the selection of who succeeds me” It is hoped that transparency would be allowed so that whoever finally emerges will enjoy the respect and cooperation of the entire Ijebu nation where the Awujale is the paramount ruler. The weight and power of the office of Awujale of Ijebuland is so enormous that the occupier cannot afford to deal with resentment of the people over wrongful choices or force legitimacy on assumption of office. The case of shooting of Oba Daniel Adesanya by Yesufu Idumota on October 20, 1934 and the eventual amputation of the monarch’s right hand over wrong selection is still fresh in memory. As the custodian of the Ijebu cultural heritage and head of about 60 other Obas, the Awujale has to be highly respected and widely accepted across the nooks and crannies of the Ijebu nation. The successor to the charismatic Oba Adetona must be a mature, elegant and intelligent person who should be selected through a rigorous but fair process. Ijebu people cherish their Awujale and will not want any external influence to dictate any aspect of his ascendancy to the throne.

Samuel Ajose Foundation Donates Equipment To Boost Voter Registration Across Lagos The Samuel Ajose Foundation has donated essential equipment to all 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State, alongside a cash donation, to support continuous voters registration and drive party membership ahead of the 2027 elections. The donation which was done at Lagos Island East LCDA, over the weekend, saw laptops, fans, printers, generator sets, and internet WiFi handed over to the local government, which aims to facilitate voter registration ahead of the next electoral cycle. Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Foundation, Samuel Ajose, emphasised the importance of voter registration, noting that the strength of any political party lies in the number of people registered on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal. Ajose highlighted common challenges, such as long queues and informal fees, discouraging citizens from registering for a Permanent Voter Card (PVC). To address these obstacles, Ajose stated, "We decided to support registration efforts with laptops, fans, printers, internet facilities, and generators. Once the equipment reaches all 57 LGAs, it will encourage people to come out and register without difficulties." Ajose further pointed out that Lagos has over 22 million residents and expressed hope that INEC could successfully register 18 million people before the exercise closes. The Foundation has also pre-installed six months' worth of internet service and donated N200,000 to help each secretariat run the registration process efficiently. Ikeja APC Chairman and Chairman of the Conference of 57 APC LGA Chairmen, Mayegun Dally-Adeokun, welcomed the donation. "Today, we see a man who has supported 57 LGAs with materials crucial for the ongoing voters registration exercise," Dally-Adeokun said. "This gesture will encourage us to do more, especially in ensuring young people register to exercise their civic duty, and help those who are now eligible or have misplaced their voter cards." State Deputy Chairman, APC Lagos, Mayegun Moshood, described the donation as marvellous, saying, "I'm dumbfounded by this gesture; it's extraordinary for a single individual to make such a contribution. We've encouraged all local government chairmen to support the LGAs in accessing these kinds of equipment, and for someone to step forward, I doff my hat for him." Executive Chairman of Lagos Island East LCDA, Muyibi Folawiyo, praised the Foundation's support, calling the donated equipment critical for registration. Folawiyo explained, "We welcome these tools to aid registration and pledge our support for a seamless process. While we are party members, on the matter of PVC registration, we represent the community. This donation is for all Lagosians, regardless of party affiliation, and the equipment will be strategically placed to ensure access for everyone."

RENEWED HOPE HOUSING CITY, KARSANA: SUBSCRIBERS URGE SWIFT ACTION ON CERTIFICATES OF OCCUPANCY Dear Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike (Mr Projects), We want to commend the Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the landmark transformative projects going on all over Nigeria. It is clear as daylight that Nigeria is truly marching forward and we will get to the promised land very soon. The various infrastructure projects in roads, bridges, rail, port rehabilitation, Renewed Hope Housing City and Estate, and the overall infrastructure transformation of the Federal Capital Territory are significant and landmark contributions to the growth and development of a nation. The courageous and great vision of Mr. President supported strongly by the Minister of the FCT and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development are truly hope renewing activities in the life and destiny of our great nation. We want to sincerely thank you for the speed of the award of the four-lane road to the Renewed Hope City project in Karsana and the speed and quality of deployment going on. We now understand why they call you Mr. Projects. In a few months, the drainages and kerbs on the 10.4-kilometre road are nearing completion built with world-class engineering zeal and commitment. This has encouraged over 1000 Nigerians to immediately buy into this laudable project of Mr. President and Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Honourable Minister Sir, most of us that subscribe to the project are private sector workers and federal and state civil servants. The project was attractive due to the promise of Mr. President and the Federal Minister of Housing because we were promised 85% to 90% of the project value in single digit interest rate mortgages from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. We have almost all finished paying our equity contribution of 10% to 15% of the sales value and the developers issued us provisional letters of allocation awaiting final letters of allocation as soon as the Federal Mortgage Bank pays the developers the mortgage portion of 85% to 90%. This is where we need your intervention. The developers have consistently updated us on the progress on the site and we also visit the site frequently to ensure progress on our allocated units. The only delay to thousands of Nigerians reaping the benefits of this programme, which our President is so proud of, and you and the Minister of Housing have done so much to see come to fruition, is the lack of Certificate of Occupancy for each of the subscribers. Mortgage cannot be booked in our favour by most of our mortgage institutions without the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy for each of our subscribers. One of the most fundamental policies and decisions of your administration as the FCT Minister is your decision to bypass mass housing developers in the administration of Certificates of Occupancy for the subscribers and buyers of mass housing in Abuja. This one of its kind initiative in the Federal Capital Territory is an evidence of your plans and desires and that of Mr. President to ensure technology is deployed in the processing of Certificates of Occupancy for mass housing subscribers, alongside your desire to see that unnecessary bottlenecks are eliminated in the process. We congratulate Mr. President and yourself for this new initiative. Our request, sir, is that we need your Land Administration department to create a special desk for the subscribers of the Renewed Hope City in Karsana to enable the fast tracking of our certificates of occupancy so that our mortgages can be disbursed and we can take possession of our houses. The rates and fees specified by your administration to be paid officially to your nominated account are transparent and fair enough, though we would have liked a bit of discount on the rates. However, the transparent and fair rates you adopted that are applicable to everyone has inspired us to make the payments to the FCT account as soon as we get the assessment. This will generate transparently evaluated revenue for the FCT and more importantly support our President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development to fulfil the promises to Nigerians of providing houses supported with mortgages from the Federal Mortgage Bank. In fact, this is the first time in the history of Nigeria that mortgages will be processed in thousands for contributors to the National Housing Fund of the Federal Mortgage Bank. But without the Certificates of Occupancy, all these laudable efforts of Mr. President, the Minister of Housing, and definitely the Minister of the FCT will, GOD forbid it, not be realised as quickly and as efficiently as you like to operate. Kindly intervene on our behalf, sir. We will inform the developers to liaise again with the Lands Department following your expected intervention. Thank you Mr President, Thank you Mr. Housing, and Thank you Mr. Projects. Signed: ASSOCIATION OF SUBSCRIBERS TO RENEWED HOPE HOUSING CITY. A PPP collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Juicyway, a Nigerian cross-border payments startup that helps businesses get FX for international transactions, has raised $3 million in pre-seed funding. The company will use the funding to expand its marketing and business development teams, improve its technology, and scale its business in Nigeria, the US, the UK, and Canada. P1 Ventures led the round with participation from Ventures Platform, Future Africa, Magic Fund, Microtraction, and angel investors Andrew Alli, Gbenga Oyebode, and Tunde Folawiyo. Founded in 2021 by Ife Johnson and Justin Ziegler, Juicyway is a marketplace that allows businesses and individuals to convert local currency to dollars and vice versa. Juicyway serves both suppliers—businesses that are bringing foreign currency (like USD or CAD)—and buyers—businesses that need to buy the foreign currencies from them and make outbound transfers. It makes money from transaction fees and spreads from transactions on its platform. “Businesses come to us for two reasons; the first type of business wants to take local currency, convert it to US dollars, and make international payments via [our] banking partners [demand side]. The second type of businesses want to leverage the accounts we provide to bring money into the continent and convert it into local currency to make disbursements [supply side],” said Ife Johnson, Juicyway co-founder and CEO. The company’s raise comes at a time when access to FX remains a challenge for Nigerian businesses dealing with frequent heavy international transactions. Juicyway is one of the many Nigerian upstarts pitching to solve the country’s cross-border payments problem. Juicyway allows businesses to make cross-border payments using stablecoins—like Tether and USDC—positioning it as a hybrid decentralised finance (DeFi) and traditional finance (TradFi) payments startup. When a business onboards on Juicyway, they can choose to open a US Dollar (USD), Canadian Dollar (CAD), or a stablecoin wallet. When Customer A comes in and deposits naira to get dollars, and Customer B brings in dollars, they get matched on the platform and exchange liquidity without knowing it. This way, Juicyway is not a counterparty for the transactions. Businesses can set the prices and order limits they want to sell their foreign currencies. Other businesses that need FX can buy the foreign currencies if they match the asking price. This market-influenced pricing system can allow businesses to get good FX deals. “We saw a problem where every single time businesses needed to convert local currency to foreign currency, there just wasn’t a supply for that [foreign] currency that was near-instant, cheap enough, or compliant enough to solve their needs,” Johnson shared on the problem Juicyway is solving. Juicyway has been operating in stealth mode since November 2021 when it first processed its first $9 payment. Since then, it claims to have processed $1.3 billion in total payment volume (TPV)—a metric that Juicyway considers as its North Star—for over 4,000 customers. The startup operates in four markets: Nigeria, the UK, the US, and Canada. Juicyway holds licences in all these markets: an International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO) licence in Nigeria, a Money Services Business (MSB) licence in Canada, and an Authorised Payment Institution (API) licence in the UK. It operates through partner banks in the US, where it has also received a phase 1 payments approval in Washington DC. The company recently expanded its services to individuals, with Johnson saying they needed “critical mass” to test and expand their platform. Individuals needing to make international payments or receive forex supply can also onboard on Juicyway. The startup plans to grow its customer base in the coming months by increasing its marketing efforts. “This is a platform that can handle one or two million people across the UK, Canada, and Nigeria—all existing in one platform—and make money move between one another either directly or indirectly,” said Johnson. Johnson explained that the company operates in a niche market that benefits both remittance companies and market makers. For example, remittance companies like RemitChoice use the platform to sell liquidity and make disbursements, while businesses like IHS Towers use it for outbound payments. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Ife, Justin and Idris as they tackle one of the most critical challenges in finance. At P1 Ventures, we seek audacious and exceptional founders like them—visionaries who aim to redefine industries and empower emerging markets,” said Hisham Halbouny, co-founder and managing partner at P1 Ventures. The company will be looking to raise again in the next 18–24 months.

Ideally, democracy is meant to be a government of the people by the people for the people, but it has been twisted to be a contrary experience in Lagos State. For so long, the politics of Lagos State has always supported and benefitted only the privileged politicians, the elites, the hanger-ons, the henchmen of politicians, the ruthless enforcers, the transport unions officials, the market women officials and others at the expense of the people. By and large, the popular political system called ‘state capture’ is the predominant behind-the-scene hand of treachery that controls the levers of economic and political power in Lagos State, while marginalising the less privileged and leaving the general average hardworking Lagosians to scramble for crumbs of survival. Thus, our state has been captured for the private benefits of less than 1 percent of the citizens of the state while 99 percent suffer from the huge infrastructure failure and large scale corruption of the APC government. Today, as a result of the lopsided, exclusive, corrupt character of government in Lagos State, many questions are begging for answers. How many Lagosians have access to good healthcare services, potable water and affordable housing? How many low-cost houses were built by the APC government in the last 20 years for Lagosians? Perhaps the government built at best 30,000 units for over 20 million struggling tax-paying citizens of the state! Still, how many of our people are gainfully and productively employed? How many new jobs were created directly and indirectly by the state government in the last 20 years? Quite insignificant! As the grim realities of misrule grind on Lagosians year after year, many are still living in the squalid and poverty-ridden areas of Ajegunle, Okokomaiko, Badagry, Ikorodu, Epe, Alimosho, Lagos Island, Lekki, Bariga, Shomolu, Ketu, Ojo and so on. The sadder reality is that most of the people living in such slum conditions have no hope in the next 50 years of being pulled out of poverty as they continue to suffer acute lack of electricity, potable water, decent accommodation, health and education facilities, gainful jobs and more, due their total oppression by the political elites. So, right-thinking stakeholders are now asking: where are the so-called acclaimed massive developmental projects being trumpeted by the APC government to deceive voters for a second term when life still is short, hard and brutish in the state for most residents? Curiously, in this same ‘centre of excellence’, consultants to the state government collect over 50 billion naira annually in various commissions for taxes and other levies collected on behalf of the state. Multiple taxation that kills businesses is the order of the day, with all kangaroo kinds of consultants such as in inland revenue, tenement rates, land use charge, advert isement, telecom infrastructure, power infrastructure approvals, building permits, fund raising, markets, abattoir and transport unions all oppressing and fleecing Lagosians of their hard earned income. But where is all the money going into? Where is accountability for our commonwealth? Isn’t it time Lagosians woke up and demand concrete answers as the next elections approach fast? The Labour Party governorship team of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV) and his Deputy is firmly of the view that in every four years of an APC government, over N100 billion is frittered away in special fees payable to consultants and other politically backed rent seekers. When this is coupled with an over bloated and corrupt contracting process, inflated figures by various ministries, plus the state capture by the political leader, his agents and government officials of the land assets of the state, it can be boldly affirmed that over two trillion Naira has been wasted and diverted to some people’s pockets in the last twenty years of the APC government. That is the same massive amount of money that would have helped provide educational scholarships, world-class healthcare, affordable houses, potable water and the creation of millions of jobs for the most disadvantaged, marginalized people of the state. However, all hope is not lost. That is why GRV’s message is that Lagosians must take their fate in their hands and seize their chance in 2023! We have been taken for a ride for too long. If elected, the GRV government will declare within its first few days of office a total war on poverty. Our focus will be to create a good life and living for the lowest income earning Lagosians and others. We will improve access to quality education, quality healthcare, clean water, affordable housing and so on. We will set up and finance skill acquisition centers for ICT in high-demand jobs and training for at least 2 million people in all the local government areas in the state, in disciplines such as fintech, programming, cybersecurity, gaming technology, data analytics, online marketing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc. Also, we will deal with the miserable traffic situation by building efficient road and water transportation networks all over the state. In all, we will definitely block all leakages, rent seeking, corrupt diversion of our commonwealth, terminate all evil consulting agreements of the APC collaborators and recover our commonwealth for the entire benefits of Lagosians. We will fight the evil extortion of our traders, drivers, market women etc. Major focus of GRV administration will be on catering to a better life for artisans, lower cadre civil servants, lower cadre private sector workers, domestic workers, drivers, market women, underprivileged youths and senior citizens, unemployed folks, and all those living in the ghettos of Lagos, to give everyone a sense of belong and a good standard of living. A new beginning beckons to Lagosians. GRV is ready and prepared to take Lagosians to the next level. Join us! Sponsored Post

As Nigerians brace up for the Governorship and State House of Assembly phase of the 2023 general elections due for Saturday March 11, Lagosians have another date to keep with history. People-driven history will be made, so they must beware of the symbolic Ides of March which is cloaked in the campaign of falsehood and divisive ethnic politicking by individuals whose fabled political structure was crushed in the last presidential election in Lagos. The desperados are jittery about another defeat and whipping up primitive sentiments against Labour Party's Governorship Candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), calling him names in order to turn indigenous people against him. In reality, what they are afraid of is the solid pedigree of this original Lagosian, his ability to deliver and vintage ethnic hybrid position to play the politics of inclusiveness that accommodate everyone, no matter ethnic, religious or economic status. Who is this Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and why are they so keen to disparage him with unfounded fallacies? Gbadebo (‘The one who brings the crown’) is a Lagos original with true blood flowing in his veins. He is a proud descendant of the prestigious Rhodes-Vivour family, whose pedigree as foremost legal luminaries and judges, with distinguished contributions to the state's development, date back to the 1800s - about 400 years in history. Indeed, Gbadebo is the great grandson of eminent Justice Steven Bankole Rhodes, a founding father of the executive and judiciary, who served on the Executive Council with eminent Nigerians like Adeyemo Alakija. They and similarly minded nationalists built Lagos, a credit some people have been trying to steal. Also, Gbadebo's uncle is the Supreme Court Judge, Justice Bode Rhodes Vivour. In terms of direct parentage, GRV’s own father is Barrister Olawale Rhodes-Vivour, a distinguished lawyer and detribalized son, who embodies the Lagos spirit of accommodation by marrying a wonderful Igbo woman, Nkechi, who is Gbadebo’s mother today. Interestingly, GRV’s diverse names as Gbadebo (‘The one who brings the crown’), Chinedu (‘God is leading’) and Patrick (‘of noble origin’) all point to a man destined for greatness and leadership. So, with such a rich and highly accommodating pedigree, politicians are afraid that GRV's candidacy makes it easy for both members of the Igbo and Yoruba tribes to support, trust and see him as one of their own. Before and after the last presidential election, Gbadebo’s rising profile as an authentic unifying face of Lagos made powers that be to descend to sponsoring social media influencers to promote a fake campaign of an Igbo takeover agenda. They even lied about GRV saying Lagos is no man’s land. The truth is that the opponents do not want a true and accommodating indigene to be governor. Greed for power and resources makes the enemies of Lagos go any length to retain power. However, a GRV, aside from a rich pedigree, will bring a breath of fresh air and restore the original glory of the state with inclusive and progressive development policies. He has pledged to use 10% of Lagos IGR to empower 1 million poor Lagosians with interest-free loans. GRV has plans to rehabilitate the ‘Agberos’, area boys and thugs, and reintegrate them back into society as responsible citizens. He will fix the bad roads in all parts: from Ikotun, Ijegun, Satellite town, Lagos-Badagry Expressway and Ikorodu to Sagamu Expressway, irrespective of the predominant tribe living there in order to boost international trade. GRV will provide affordable housing and stop the racket that goes on with government built homes. A LP government will make life better for the civil servants, the middle class, will improve wages and salaries for government workers, as well as fight for the poor and the economically disadvantaged. Today, Lagos has over 1 trillion naira debt portfolio and contractual obligations of over 500 billion naira. GRV’s plan is built around quality and affordable education in public schools, quality and very affordable health services. He will also ensure provision of drinkable water to as many homes as possible and will fight for the poor and underprivileged by introducing transparency into procurement and contracting process and a level playing field to enable the participation of all qualified persons. GRV supported and coordinated the campaign of Peter Obi as the most competent presidential candidate. With incontrovertible evidence, GRV supports Mr. Obi’s legal bid to contest the presidential election results in Lagos because Obi won the state overwhelmingly. Opponents actually see GRV, a true Lagosian, as their biggest threat to that selfish anti-secession plan. GRV resolutely refused to sell out and step down from the governorship race in spite of the enticements wrapped as so-called mouth-watering pecuniary offers. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour stands on principles of fairness, integrity, equity, justice and inclusiveness to enthrone a new government that will benefit everyone in Lagos, no matter where they come from.
