Back then a lot of people were applying for DV Lottery...American immigration lottery. I personally knew three familes that used that route to leave Nigeria during that time,..in 1995-6. And I knew people who even japaed back then without using that route.

Also, back then Nigerians were crossing the desert to go to Europe. Remember Salamatu. Died in transit to Europe in 1997.

Life was hard then.

In 1996, I recall being among a group of young people who heard an older Nigerian talk of the good old days when bread was 50 kobo. Fifty kobo for a whole ass loaf of bread. Yep, and how people used to buy car for N5000 straight self...in the 1970's. By 1994, a new car, same brand , cost 400000 naira.
