The UK’s Minister of State for Policing, Fire and Crime Prevention, Dame Diana Johnson, was a victim of theft when her purse was stolen during a policing conference, the BBC reports on Thursday.

The minister was said to be speaking at the Police Superintendents’ Association conference on Tuesday about the growing problems of antisocial behaviour, theft and shoplifting when her purse was stolen.

The Mirror UK reports that the theft occurred at the Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, where the conference was held.

The Home Office has confirmed that the minister was a victim of theft, and Warwickshire Police have launched an investigation into the incident, according to The Mirror.

A 56-year-old man from Coventry has also been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on bail in connection to the incident, Warwickshire Police said.

A spokesman from Warwickshire Police stated, “We’re investigating a report of the theft of a purse at a hotel on the B4115 in Kenilworth. The theft occurred some time between 11.00-13.15 on Tuesday.

“Enquiries are ongoing. A 56-year-old man from Coventry has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.”

The Home Office has stated that no security risks were identified in connection with the theft.

The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association has expressed concern that 80 per cent of the animals in the Borno zoo have been affected by flooding.

In a statement on Thursday, the President of the NVMA, Dr Moses Arokoyo, warned that if the animals are not properly cared for, there could be an outbreak of zoonotic diseases.

He urged all levels of government to prioritise the safety of animals, both in zoos and in the wild, impacted by the recent flooding in Borno State.

“According to reports, the heavy rains have not only displaced thousands of residents but have also impacted local wildlife and zoo animals in ways that demand urgent attention. The NVMA is mobilising its expertise and resources to support both human and animal victims of this natural disaster.

“The flood in Borno has caused devastation across communities, displacing families and causing widespread damage to properties and livelihoods.

“Among those affected are animals, particularly those in local zoos and wildlife safety zones, where their living conditions have been severely compromised. Reports indicate that 80% of the animals in the zoo have been victims of the flood, and many are now in distress, facing the risk of disease, injury, and malnutrition due to the flooding of their habitats,” the statement noted.

Dr Arokoyo emphasised that veterinarians have a dual responsibility, especially in this emergency, under the One-Health approach.

“Given the situation, our veterinarians in Borno State have been tasked with collaborating with local caretakers to provide all necessary assistance and expertise to ensure the safekeeping of our animals and protect the human populace.

“We aim to ensure that animals are promptly rescued from residential areas, receive emergency medical attention, and are given temporary shelter.

“We are ready to work alongside state and federal governments, as well as non-governmental organisations, to provide relief efforts. While our focus is on animal welfare, we are equally committed to supporting human healthcare initiatives, recognising that the health of our communities is closely linked to the health of animals in our environment.

“This disaster underscores the need for greater preparedness and preventive measures. We advocate for stronger disaster management policies that include clear protocols for animal welfare. Veterinarians have a key role in shaping these policies and ensuring that animals are not neglected during crises.”

He also highlighted the critical need, especially in light of global climate change, for each state to establish a rapid response team that includes veterinarians to manage such unexpected events and ensure the overall safety of Nigerian lives.

“The NVMA remains committed to alleviating the suffering caused by this tragedy and ensuring that humans and animals receive the care they desperately need.

“We stand in solidarity with the people and animals of Borno State,” the statement concluded.

Embattled US President Joe Biden sought out safe ground Sunday, courting Black voters at a church as he hit the campaign trail to salvage his reelection bid and silence growing calls to quit.

"We're all imperfect beings," the 81-year-old told a welcoming congregation in Philadelphia, where he received a jolt of rejuvenation from worshippers who chanted "four more years."

Biden has dug in despite an uprising among some Democratic lawmakers, analysts and voters concerned he lacks the mental acuity and physical fitness to serve a second term -- worries brought to the fore by a disastrous debate performance last month against Republican challenger Donald Trump.

But the president has unequivocally declared he is fit to serve, the only one who can defeat Trump, is staying in the race.

On Sunday, he embarked on a two-stop swing in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, before he hosts the NATO leaders' summit in Washington later this week.

So far, five Democratic lawmakers have called on Biden to drop out, with the drumbeat of dissent slowly rising.

Two high-profile congressional Democrats on Sunday stopped short of calling for Biden to step aside, but warned he still needed to win over worried voters.

"There's only one reason" the race between Trump and Biden "is close, and that's the president's age," Representative Adam Schiff told NBC's "Meet the Press."

As some speculate about Biden handing off the campaign to Vice President Kamala Harris, Schiff said he thought she "could win overwhelmingly."

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy meanwhile said "the president needs to do more," including unscripted events, to reassure voters.

"This week is going to be absolutely critical," Murphy told CNN's "State of the Union."

Biden himself largely avoided discussing the crisis at hand when he gave a seven-minute address at Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ, speaking to a constituency he has embraced throughout his half-century political career.

"It's good to be home," he said to cheers, before joking briefly about his age.

"I know I look like I'm only 40 years old but I've been around a little bit," he said.

Biden's campaign stops come as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries scheduled a virtual meeting of senior Democratic representatives Sunday to discuss the best way forward, and Democratic Senator Mark Warner is reportedly working to convene a similar forum in the Senate.

With Washington ruminating, First Lady Jill Biden is scheduled to campaign for her husband Monday in Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, while the president preps for the NATO summit beginning Tuesday.
