Step 3 :- Design your Device(s)
We are talking about OEM here! How come we are designing our own device(s) ourselves? Great question!

To search for great OEM technical partner that can deliver, you need to have an idea of what you want.

The sole essence of this step is to help you develop an image of the smartphone you want in your mind, if possible make a sketch or a paper cut of it. So that while searching for OEM partner and looking over various devices and designs, you will know your preferred design and partner immediately you see them, without unnecessary confusion.

This place helps you to know more about smartphones, since you really need to know much to pick a good OEM partner.

Here, you need to also decide the preferred design by your target customers. You can do this by observing the shapes people go for, much. Personally, for me I have been an insider in smartphone business, so I know designs people love so much.

Its a pity that some smartphone vendors in Nigerian market has formed the habit of dumping anyhow designs on their customers. Fortunately, Nigerians doesn't have much options than to buy, but it limits volumes of sales if you can't listen to your customers.

Let me digress a bit. Recently, I took someone to the stand of a very popular Smartphone vendor in Nigerian market here. The guy, a green horn when it comes to smart devices, didn't pick any phone. When I asked him why, he replied "I don't like their designs". In my mind, I was like "waaoo! I thought am the only person that noticed this". So you must take note of designs majority of your customers desire.

Moreover, you must know about smartphones' features like bezels, screen to size ratio, form factor and effect they have on customers and phones. You must know about processors too, you must be familiar with screens, screen sizes, resolutions, pixels, pixels per inch(ppi), etc.

You must know about cameras, its aperture sizes, its pixels and their effects. You must know about RAMs, ROMs, internal memory, external memory, USB On the go (OTG), various audio enhancers and chips etc. You must know about colours and their effects on buyers.

Finally, you must know the FIVE ingredients that makes a great device.

Infact, you must know as much as possible. Don't expect me to teach you or else you wants to pay.

Then put all these together to form an idea of the kind of phone you wants, for its level, for your target market.

Below is the rendering of our first smartphone but financial challenges truncated it's production.

Good luck!

Next: - Step 4 - Estimate your cost.

Please I need the details of St. Patrick's logistics seems most people are quite comfortable with them. My Oga Ymodulus please I beg you, kindly add me on whatsapp- 08098156707....I need your help seriously. Thanks in anticipation.

ST. Patrick is the only express company I use. And they have NEVER DISAPPOINTED me.

They may not be the cheapest but they are very reliable, very friendly, very careful and prompt.

Just be humble, polite, courteous with them you'll be surprised.

Another thing, they are experienced old hands and I think they are Custom Licensed Agents because they never use third party no matter what. Once their Big Boss Mr Patrick him self told me they had meeting with custom.

Most of these cheap express cargo companies all over the place are not custom licensed agents that's why they always have problems now and then as they try to rely on big agents.

In fact, St Patrick gives big boy service. I love them.

Step 2 - Invent your brand(naming, logo and branding):- This step is very crucial for your success and this is where your marketing begins proper.

If you are a start up like me, it means people has not formed a subconscious tag, image, believes about your brand, in their heads. They don't associate it with anything yet. So nudge them to form a very positive, motivational captivating tag and associate it with encouragement and benefits.

Because the essence of a name is to capture people's attention and holds it. Another important need for a brand is to encapsulate the very uniqueness, aims, missions and objectives of the company and present it to the target customers in one move.

Hence, you need to be very careful in coining your name, designing your logo, selecting your colours and branding.

The most important question you must ask yourself is "WHAT WILL COME TO PEOPLE'S MIND ONCE THEY COME ACROSS THE NAME AND LOGO OF MY COMPANY?
Is it something very positive, encouraging, motivational and affirmative? What image will they subconsciously form in their mind concerning the company, products and brand? Is the name catchy and addictive?

The success of Infinix over Tecno as brands, is more or less as a result of this. Immediately you call Tecno, people will remember low quality feature phones and call it "chinco phone". But the moment you call Infinix, people will immediately associate it with infinity - limitless, then they will think the name is "swag" and trendy. Then they desire to associate with it. Human beings are subconscious beings, that tends to act impulsely.
Hence give your company and smartphone's brand a catchy, trendy, swag name, which people associates to positivity and benefits.

Its very good if the name is not more than Six letters long, if it must be up to seven letters long, let it not be more than two syllable or at most three. Let the name not contain "r", people tends to be a bit afraid of "Rs", If it must contain "R", let it be silent or swallowed.

1) Apple (4) LG (7)Lenovo (10) Tecno (13) Gionee
2) Samsung (5) Nexus (8.)ZTE (11) Infinix (14) HTC
3) Huawei (6) Xiaomi (9) Alcatel (12) Nokia (15) Solo
Over 95% of smartphones in Nigerian market today carries the name above. Do you think its a mistake that these names doesn't contain 'r'? Do you think its also a mistake that none of the name above is more than seven letters long?

I believe human psychology were involved in coining these names above. Human beings these days tends to be in a hurry, so pronouncing long difficult words is slightly a turn off.

Infact at Melon Technologies, we prefer the name not to be more than FIVE letters and the name of a fruit or a vegetable. Since everyone loves fruits and vegetables and associates them to sweetness and benefits.

The success secret of Apple Computers and Xiaomi Inc lies a bit on their names and logo. Since everyone loves Apple and Rice. Xiaomi means RICE or millet.

Furthermore, if possible let the name be an English name, to avoid casting societal limitation to your brand. Also let the name have meaning, very positive meaning, this will help your target customers form a very positive image subconsciously about your brand as fast as possible.

But that does not mean that if your brand name is WHACK, out of place and meaningless, you won't sell and be successful. No! Success comes from GOD. Its just that I believe in doing things very well.

Then invent and design your logo to explain and illustrate the name and focus of your company.

Get the name and logo properly registered to protect your idea and brand.

WORDS OF CAUTION: BE ORIGINAL! BE YOURSELF! BE CREATIVE! BE INNOVATIVE! PRAY, THINK AND LET YOUR IMAGINATION ROAM WIDE.

Examples of my kind of brand names:-
1) Blossom (2) Lotus (3) Mango

Finally, decide from your heart to match your very positivities with a very positive business practice. This will drive your dream and pursuit far. Its counter productive to name a business "favour", only to offer low quality substandard fake devices.

Good luck!

Watch out for Step 3 - Design your devices.

Bonus: Examples of Target market identification

Before we proceed to Step 2, lets take a look at typical examples of how some people/companies identified their target market.

Fairphone:
Some years back, a man called Bas Van Abel of Netherlands, noticed the increasing number of human rights activists, people calling for ethical fairness and decided to make smartphones to satisfy them.
He asked people who wants to buy ethically fair phone to pay, even before the phone was produced. People paid and he went to China, searched and found a company(Shenzhen G.....), interested in making ethically fair phone. A phone with very minimal human rights abuse, in the production from start to finish. He targeted about 10,000 people but finally ended up selling 25,000 smartphones. He became successful. That was how Fairphone was born. Now Fairphone 2 is in the works.

So for Fairphone their target market was ETHICALLY FAIR PEOPLE.

Xiaomi:
A Chinese man called Lei Jun, while working as CEO of Kingsoft noticed that, then big phone companies like Nokia, Motorola etc doesn't take heed to customers preferences, demands and needs while designing and making phones. He decided that if he has to make phones, he would make phones according to customers/peoples preference.
From modding Android based ROMs, which are feature packed and people eccentric, he graduated to making high quality affordable smartphones and accessories according to customers demand and he/his company Xiaomi, became very successful, rich and popular amid a highly competitive Chinese smartphone market.

So for Xiaomi their target market is being FULLY CUSTOMER ORIENTED.

Letv:
A Chinese man called Jia Yueting of Leshi Internet Information Technology (Letv), noticed that major smartphone makers like Apple, in the keenly competitive Chinese domestic market, under serves customers with a pinch of arrogance.
They make mid range phones and sells them as highly priced high end devices, way out of the reach of many people who needs them. And they doesn't care a hoot how people feel.
He decided to fill that gap and reverse the trend, to make high end smartphones and sell them as mid range ones, then makes mid range phones and sell them as entry level phones, way below his Bill of Materials(BOM). And Letv became an instant hit, over night, in a highly competitive market.

For Letv, their target market is "Value thirsty majority who are insulted by the seemingly arrogance of Apple and co"

Transsion:
The company that owns Tecno, Infinix, Itel, Carlcare and Iflux. Around 2010/2011, this company noticed that African smartphone market is under served and holds high potential, with high demands for cheap affordable smartphones. But big companies kept ignoring this market because of their shortsightedness and erroneous presumptions. Transsion came in with full force to serve African market and became an instant hit. This move pushed them to become one of the first ten biggest smartphones makers/shippers in China.

So for Transsion their target market is African market, "an under served market".

From here you can have an idea of how to identify your target market. Your target market goes a long way to decide how your phones will be made, how they will look like and what they must contain.

Bottom line: identifying your target market can be in two ways;
(1) looking at your seemingly competitive over saturated domestic market to identify a large group of people with a particular interests yet unserved.
(2) looking for an area that is scantily served or under served, and serve them with passion.

We at Melon Technologies have 3 target markets.

Have a great juicy and sweet day!

Stages in producing Your own android smartphones brand.

This can be broken down by me into;
1) Preparations.
Mental preparation and physical preparations, as we are discussing.

2) Establishment.
Provision of your space and accommodation. Like office, warehouse, showroom, service center etc.

3) Sourcing and Legalization.

This involves sourcing for technical partners, factory visits, signing contracts and agreements. Contacting 3rd party QC inspectors etc.
This is where the real work is. Here you have to make a lot of travels. Spend a lot of money in hotel bookings and with 3rd party law and inspection firms.

4) Production and marketing.
This involves payment. We will look at a lot of payment schemes like FOB, TT, WESTERN UNION, EXW, LC etc. Then 30% after 3rd party factory audit etc. QC inspection and reporting takes place here. Shipping, company branding, employees, salaries and different forms of marketing.

5) Profit! Profit! Profit!
As the money rolls in we don't need to get carried away. Ways to keep growing.

6) After Sales support.
Updates, servicing, repairs comes in here.

Note: Sorry, I may not finish all of them. Because I might get tired a long the way.

Stage 1: Mental Preparation.
After deciding to come out with your own brand, the next is to develop the right attitude and mind set, because its not all that easy. But it becomes easy with the right attitudes and mentality. Attitudes like; believe in oneself, passion for smartphones, self truth, probing studies, proper planning, persistent practice(hard work), cool headed patience and prayerfulness.

Its good to be service oriented not necessarily profit oriented(I know you need profit, but don't place it first). Place service, customer satisfaction and growth first, profits will come.

Then look inside your pocket and be convinced that you can afford N15 million(in Nigerian context), one way or the other.

Let me hint again; "its not all that easy". Be ready to encounter challenges and fight. Nothing good, innovative and ground breaking is, but people still do it. People who does it, doesn't have two heads, they are like you and me.

Really, you need a "can do spirit", you also need to make up your mind to persist until you breakthrough.

If you have successfully done your mental preparation, lets move on.

Stage 2: Physical Preparation.
Before you proceed to producing and marketing your own brand of smartphones proper, you need to sit down and do some preparations, or else you will fail woefully. Some companies rushed into it, just because they feel they can do it, to grab large profits, maybe because a particular company is making it, but they failed woefully.

Tecno did lots of preparations for 6 years from 2006 to 2012 before they came out with their first android smartphone (Tecno N3) and it became a great success. One of the preparation they did was to create a ....... . They researched, invested, prepared, worked hard. Infact, I don't believe that any company can jump in today and match Tecno. Any company that can match them needs to bend down now and work hard for at least next 10 years and look in the directions that Tecno is not looking.

You need to prepare and work hard. Here you must ask yourself lots of questions, research and find answers to them truthfully, if the answers does not look good and favorable, please better QUIT.

Step 1- Identify your target market:- Are you interested in American market, European market, Chinese domestic market, Indian market, Asian market, African market etc? What are the uniqueness of the market? Can I explore and exploit these uniqueness? Who do you want to make phones for? Who are your potential customers? Which type of smartphone is generally preferred by this market? What are the existing competitions in this target market? How can I beat these competitions? What are the risks? What is the purchasing power of this market like? Can I be able to produce a unique smartphone for this market? How can I easily and cost effectively find companies to help me fulfill the need of this market? And so on.

Please you need to find truthful answers to these questions and more, before you move on. And the answers must look favourable before you move on. DONT DECEIVE YOURSELF AND DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.

Watch out for Step 2: Invent your BRAND(Naming and branding)!!!

Ways of producing Android smartphones

(1) Full(In-house) Manufacturing(FM)
Here a company makes their phones from start to finish, in house, without consulting any other company. All the components on their phones are manufactured by them and assembled by them. This is very capital intensive and it is for very big companies. Samsung does this.

2) Contract Manufacturing(CM/EMS)
Here a company designs its own smartphone, sources/procures parts and then goes into agreement with another company to finish the production and assembling. Foxconn contract manufactures for Apple Iphone, Huawei, Xiaomi. Inventec contract manufactures Redmi series for Xiaomi. Coolpad contract manufactures for Letv and Qiku. ZTE contract manufactures Yotaphone, a Russian dual screen phone. SIM contract manufactures for Smartisan etc.

3) Original Design Manufacturing(ODM)
Here a company finds a full manufactured phone, meets the company producing it, gives them directives on how to modify the phone and produce for them. Maybe, originally in design, the phone has dual core processor, 5mp back camera, but the company desire a quad core processor and 13mp back camera etc. They can tell the company to modify and produce the phone for them this way. This is called ODM. I recommend this for very rich start up companies.

4) Original Equipment Manufacturing(OEM)
This is the simplest, easiest, fastest, cost effective, profitable, start up very friendly manufacturing method. For this thread this is the type of manufacturing we are advocating. It is when a company sees a smartphone they like, from another producing company, they approach them to customize and print their logo on the smartphone, without any form of hardware modifications at all.
I recommend this type of manufacturing for any Nigerian start up. I suspect, Tecno did this with a Japanese company called Alps for phantom A, A+. Alps also produced the same phone for an Indian company Xolo.

We know many companies in China that can easily and cheaply do OEM for any Nigerian start up. The Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for OEM in China is 3000 pieces. But with special arrangement you can make 1000pieces.

Very soon we will have "Custom Manufacturing" added. Where anyone can go to stores, pick up components according to his/her own desired specs, go home and couple them together. Anytime he/she feels tired of a component, he/she can remove it and put in a better components. Thanks to Google "PROJECT ARA" modular manufacturing, where google hopes to make android smartphone manufacturing open source.

Till then, thank you all.

Types of Android smartphones

I won't go into details. I believe everyone knows about these. Its just to refresh our memory.

1) Low end/Budget/Entry level Android smartphones: these phones has small screens and basic features you need to enjoy a smartphone experience. Most android one phones fit in here. Tecno N3, M3, L3, H3 etc fit into this class.

2) Mid range smartphones: These ones has advanced features as compared to budget smartphones, but some of their features are also basic, some high end. Tecno phantom A, A+, Camon series etc fit in here.

3) High end smartphones: These phones are feature studded. Ranging from FHD screens to finger print scanner, to 2k screens, to full customized UI, metal frame, multi core processor, advanced camera, special audio chip/technology, fast charging/wireless charging, etc. Tecno phantom 5, Samsung Galaxy S4,S5,S6, Google Nexus, Huawei P series, Sony xperia Z, LG Optimus, Xiaomi Mi4, Letv le Max, ZTE Nubia, Apple Iphone etc fit into this range.

Some companies are in the habit of producing High end smartphones and markets them as mid range or mid range and markets them as entry level smartphones.

This is to gain market easily amid low profit. I like this strategy though.

10) "My power bank has lasted 1 million years"! Nonsense!!!

I always hear people boast of how long their power banks has lasted. Power banks are just more than how long they have lasted. I always ask myself "Is it 1 million years of soft charging or 1 million years of destructive charging"? Is it 1 million years of nurturing your devices or killing your devices?
Quality good power banks generally lasts longer than most low quality cheap, deceptive amperage rubbish.
But the most important issue is "how well" not "how far". I prefer now to use original Xiaomi power bank for 6 months than to use any inferior low quality pb for 1 year. My eyes have opened!

11) Know quality good power bank.
You can know quality good smart power bank when you just see it. The ways to know a quality intelligent power bank when you just see it is by;
(i) looking at the cable it came with, how flexible or tough or rigid or well build is the cable? If the cable is too soft, tiny and flexible. Run!
(ii) Does it support pass through charging? Most quality power banks I know supports this feature. Infact am yet to see a quality power bank without this feature. Pass through charging is while the power bank is recharging if you plug your device it can charge it as well.
(iii) Does it support automatic charging? Most quality power banks I have seen or know supports this feature except Romoss.
(iv) Does it charge itself? Run! Connect the micro USB to its port and plug the USB to its own port and check whether it charges itself. Smart quality power bank doesn't charge itself.

12) Power banks I recommend.
(I) Sony Cycle Energy( very expensive, 10000mah goes as high as $58)
(ii) Xiaomi (mi) smart power banks(best in pricing and quality).
(iii) Huawei Honor power banks
(iv) Asus Zen power
(v) Letv super power banks
(v) Romoss power banks

Technology Market / Re: Power Banks(PBs): What You Must Know. by MelonTech: 1:39pm On Dec 12, 2015
6) Power banks are designed, built and best used in cycles.
Every high quality good power bank brand I know (I know a lot) always measure the life cycle of their power banks in cycles. The best power bank I have ever seen "Sony Cycle Energy" power bank is built to go 1800 cycles and more.
Please use your power banks in cycles. The chips inside are designed to count this. Don't confuse them. A cycle is one full discharge and full recharge.
Whenever power bank manufacturing companies talks about cycles, look closely to find out which cycle are they talking about. Because there are two types of cycles, which are;
(i) the charging and discharging cycle of the power bank,
(ii) the charging and discharging cycle
it can give to devices you plug to it.

The latter is always bigger than the former. Let them not confuse you.
What all this long turanci means is that to obtain the best from your PBs and make the internal batteries last longer, charge it when its totally depleted and switches off. When it remains a light or two please kindly resist the temptation to plug it in no matter what. You are doing it a great dis-service

7) Power banks are made for support not your primary charging source.
Just like in wearing one trouser all the time, you tend to wear it out. If you use your power bank all the time you wear it out easily and the cycles counts faster.
Moreover, power source from the grid can not be compared to any other power source in terms of friendliness to your devices (I don't know why and I have never researched).
Am guilty of this one. I use my PB all the time, maybe because my smartphone's battery is whack or I live in an area where the DISCO gives more darkness than light and charge exorbitantly for the darkness.

8,) Power bank ports are designed for stable steady use.
Avoid shaky plugging and shaky unplugging. Shaky plugging and unplugging , can misalign the tiny metal strips inside the micro USB port and makes your cables loose or even damage the ports.
Most complaints I get about phones and power banks are about loose ports. To avoid this charge your phones on a stable steady supports like on table tops not in your bags, purses, pockets nor hands. Because as you move you tends to shake and shift the cables in the ports, which also shakes the micro USB internals, and one of the tiny metal strips inside can easily shift or misalign hence rendering the port and power bank useless.
Plug and unplug your cables with steady hands and straight steady pushes and pull, so as to prevent damage to the tiny micro USB port and plug. USB type C, is designed to address this port challenge once and for all. Very soon it will become very common. Even though I wish Apple's lightening connector had been adopted as standard instead of USB type C.

9) Power banks are still fragile devices.
Be very careful with them as with an egg. Even though you can use power banks like Sony Cycle Energy to stone someone and nothing will happen to it. Avoid rough handling it.
I have noticed that an average Nigerian is very careless and rough. We have very few gentle beings on this side of the world. Your PBs are made of fragile tiny electronic components, no matter how strongly built they are. Rough handling can break a circuit board, can peel a soldering, can break off a spot welding, can bend or break a port etc.
So be very careful with your PBs. In fact approach and handle them the way you approach and handle eggs. In China its common to get soft rubber protective cases for power banks.
It is a pity that all over the place, big boys and girls are now sampling shattered screens smart devices, that's evidence of prevalent roughness. LOLs! Naija oh Naija!
Technology Market / Re: Power Banks(PBs): What You Must Know. by MelonTech: 1:37pm On Dec 12, 2015
3) "I pass my neighbour" generator kills power banks.
Most pbs in Nigerian market today especially the low quality, cheap, over blown amperage ones, doesn't have IC protection, and they don't have other necessary circuit protections, hence they are at the mercy of power surges or any other power problem. Any sudden power surge or plunge damages them and any device that may be plugged to them, assuming they have "pass through charging", which is very unlikely. "I pass my neighbour" generators doesn't have in built AVR, hence they are very notorious with power surges and plunges. So I strongly discourage charging your devices with "I pass my neighbor" generator except you have a low wattage AVR (stabilizer) plugged in through which you do your chargings. You can get 300W or 500W stabilizers in any electronics market across Nigeria.

4) Before you buy any power bank , RESEARCH, REVIEW, RESEARCH, about it.
Type the name of any power bank you wants to buy on google.com and see whether people are using it at all, check what people who are using it are saying, look for its "Teardown" review and check the components and what they do, find out its conversion rate, check the prices, find out how to distinguish the original from the fake.
Because every good power bank I know out there has the fake already circulating, except the very new ones like Huawei Honor power banks and Letv super power banks. Xiaomi the best power bank all over the world (in pricing and quality) is shamelessly and commonly faked. The fakes is all over the whole place, cheaper, but we know it when we see it, even afar off. I have been selling original Xiaomi pbs for 1 year now (this month makes it so) that I know the fakes even while asleep.
If possible go to Youtube and watch some review videos of the power bank. The best website for power banks reviews and teardown reviews is www.goughlui.com/powerbanks. But its a pity that an average Nigerian hates to read.

5) Multiple cable plugs is not the best for you.
Apart from too much cable clusters, you suffer heavy cable losses as current flow in the wires, both in use and unplugged.
Moreover, you can confuse the intelligence of smart power banks( ie power banks that listens to your device, makes a decision on the type of power to feed it, processes this power and feeds it, and keep monitoring the device while its feeding it this power. If there is any misbehavior, it shuts down). A smart power bank with only one output port can get confused and start misbehaving if you plug multiple cables into this port and connects two devices. Since the chips may not be programmed to read two devices at a time from that port. This can cause heavy problems to your power banks and devices. Most times you might notice unusual heating, which may damage the power bank or your device.
On the other hand, if any of the cables happens to short circuit or bridge inside, since most of the multiple cables in use now are of inferior quality, it can kill your power bank as the circuit gets bridged. Especially, if your power bank doesn't have adequate protections.
Its a pity Nigerians always like easy ways or lazy ways of doing things without considering the long term consequences.
The company that placed only one cable in the package, is not stupid, please!!
Technology Market / Power Banks(PBs): What You Must Know. by MelonTech: 1:32pm On Dec 12, 2015
Power Banks(PBs): What you must know.

Having been in the active sales of power banks, I see people everyday make wrong choices in purchasing one, only driven by low price. Nigerians loves cheap things a lot. But as they say "Awufu dey purge belle"

Really, making a wrong choice in power bank has heavy consequences. That's why I have to take time out of my busy schedules, to put this piece together.

May the truth set you free and juicily sweetens your lives this season.

Even though Nigerians hate to read. Happy reading;

1) Power banks can kill your devices or even YOU:
Yes!!! Let me put it more accurately, cheap, low quality, poorly built deceptive amperage pb can kill your device or you. Am a living witness to this. After months of using cheap, fake, inferior pbs (even when I sell 100% high quality power banks), due to circumstances, my smartphone's battery is now seriously misbehaving, seriously whack! I had to force myself to pickup a quality power bank from my stock but then, the damage is done. The battery needs to be replaced.
Any pb that is not carefully built can cause a lot of damage to your devices. It can even leak sparks that can cause fire that might eventually consume you and your precious possessions.
A typical good power bank should be built with power management chips (micro-controllers / micro-processors), that needs to listen to your device and feed it "juice" according to its needs. I call this soft charging. It should also have some circuit protections, against overcharge, over discharge, over voltage, over current, short circuit, drop, hit etc. The internal circuit should be thoroughly insulated to avoid leaking power, which may cause sparks. The batteries needs to be sourced from quality battery manufacturers like Sanyo, panasonic, sony, Samsung, LG, ATL, Fujitsu, etc.
Unfortunately, many cheap, poorly built deceptive amperage PBs in Nigerian market today lacks these, and comes with unbranded Chinese batteries. And because of it, we have more power banks damaging batteries and devices than charging and helping our lives.
No wonder people always complain that power banks kills phone's batteries.

2) You can never get 100% capacity from any power bank.
Yes!! At least for now. Even high quality, original PBs, its very difficult, in fact impossible to get 100% capacity from them. Am not talking about those high amperage, cheap, deceptive power banks, that carries 50000mAH while they are actually 5000mAH. Those ones are no go area, for me o. High quality big brands are spending billions in R & D to solve this challenge, but as today the highest you can get from any power bank, I know, after full charge is 93%. Because of;
(i) Cable losses
(ii) Over discharge protection
(iii) Conversion rate.

Cable losses: For power to flow through any cable, it needs to overcome the resistance to the flow of current by the wires in the cable, power is lost as heat in overcoming this. And it must always be done in any cable. This power loss is called cable losses and wastes a part of your PBs capacity. This is one of the reasons why quality power banks from big brands doesn't come with multiple cables adapter/plugs.

Over discharge protection: To retain reversibility, in order to protect lithium based batteries from damage, it is normal industrial practice to built in an over discharge protection that shuts off the power bank once power remains around 5% in the lithium batteries. If power goes below 5% in lithium based batteries they can never recharge themselves anymore. This remaining 5% can never be released by the power bank to charge your device, so its lost. At this level the power bank's internal circuitry sees the batteries as depleted and switches it off.

Conversion rate: Lithium based batteries has the voltage of 3.7V by nature, but due to how its built you can get 3.6V or 3.75V. Now a power bank has to convert this voltage ,ie 3.7V to 5V which is USB standard, which your device also requires. How efficient a power bank is in converting this is called conversion rate. And there are losses in this conversion process.

Now most cheap, poorly built, low quality power banks in Nigerian market today doesn't have more than 70% conversion rate.

The capacity of power banks are labelled, on the capacity of the batteries inside measured at 3.7V, which can never be the same at 5V. A power bank which is actually 10400mah at 3.7V, maybe around 9432mah at 5V. This is due to conversion rate.

If you buy a 10,000mah quality power bank that's suppose to charge a 2500mah smartphone 4 times and it charges 3.5times, that power bank is great.
