Tinubu, Osoba, Adebayo accuse Fayose of false imprisonment`Ekiti governor's aide denies allegation` Back To Top Monday, April 5, 2004 AN envisaged blissful weekend in an Ekiti community has purportedly turned a nightmare for Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu and two of his former colleagues, Olusegun Osoba (Ogun) and Adeniyi Adebayo (Ekiti). It has also widened the political gulf between them and the current Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose. Tinubu yesterday accused Fayose and the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Mr. Adanaya Gaya, of detaining him and the former governors during a social visit to the state. Tinubu is the remaining governor on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) while Fayose belongs to the party at the federal level, the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The Lagos State Governor told reporters in Ado-Ekiti that Fayose and his Police Commissioner detained them in Iyin-Ekiti from Friday evening till Saturday morning when they went to Ekiti State for the burial of the mother of one of the commissioners in Lagos State, Mr. Bamidele Opeyemi. But Fayose's Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Idowu Adelusi, denied the allegation. He accused Tinubu and the other former governors of storming Ekiti with "lorry loads" of policemen and party thugs to influence the local government elections in the state that day. Tinubu told reporters that the "immature display of power" by Fayose, in collaboration with the state police boss, portended a great danger to the nation's democracy. According to the Lagos State governor, shortly after returning from the social engagement, he along with the two former governors retired to the country home of Adebayo. In a commando-fashion, Tinubu added, a contingent of regular and anti-riot policemen sealed off Adebayo's house and forced everybody inside to stay in-doors till the following morning. The Lagos State governor said that but for the restraint shown by the security men attached to him, the whole town would have been turned into a theatre of war "as the soldiers and the mobile policemen chanted war songs throughout the night." Tinubu noted that the "crude display of power" by Fayose was not only uncalled for but also reckless and an abuse of power. He said: "It is power gone crazy and power gone mad." The Lagos State governor said that on getting to Ekiti on Friday, he had proceeded to the church service for the burial, hoping that Fayose who had earlier been invited, would join them. Tinubu pointed out that he could not have gone to pay any courtesy call on Fayose in the first place because he was not on an official visit to the state. He noted that Fayose had never been attacked during his numerous visits to Lagos State. What the Ekiti governor did to him, Tinubu added, showed that Fayose was desperate in power and should be called to order by his party. Adebayo queried the rationale for the harassment of himself and his visitors, saying that as a former governor of the state, he deserved respect from Fayose. The former governor explained that while in office, he never harassed members of the opposition party, pointing out that those who thought that they enjoyed unlimited power should remember that they would one day be outside of it, whether they liked it or not. Osoba also described the attitude of Fayose and the Police Commissioner as a signpost of the end of democracy, maintaining that the PDP was already gradually destroying the nation's democracy. The former Ogun State governor said that evidence of decay on the political system was the last week's alleged manipulation of the electoral process by the PDP. He asked Nigerians to start saying bye-bye to democracy because wrong leaders are now in positions of authority in the country. "Where was this governor when I was the Editor of Daily Times Osoba queried, adding: "Maybe at best, he was in secondary school." On the allegation that they were in the state to campaign for the Alliance for Democracy (AD) for the rescheduled election held in the state last Saturday, Tinubu said there was nothing bad in it if actually they had come for electioneering campaign. He stressed that Fayose had shown by his action that he was not in control in the state and was jittery that he might lose power to the opposition parties. The Lagos State governor also queried the rationale for the arrest of one of his mobile policemen by the State Police Command, saying that by the action, the Police might soon lose respect from the people. The mobile policeman who was detailed to provide security at the ceremony for the Lagos State chairman of the AD, Chief Abiodun Ogunleye, was arrested allegedly on the orders of the state police boss at Iyin-Ekiti. Efforts by Adebayo to secure his release were said to` have been resisted by the police commissioner, who reportedly insisted that the policeman would be detained till the following day. Tinubu warned that the police might be a cog in the wheel of progress of the nation's democracy if they continued to dance to the whims and caprices of immature political leaders. The AD had at the weekend warned Fayose not to step out of the Government House in Ado-Ekiti during the elections on Saturday. But Fayose's spokeman said that the allegation was totally untrue. Adelusi said: "Since no state governor, except the Inspector General of Police has constitutional right to deploy policemen for any operation, where will governor Fayose get the power to use Police to detain or harass another fellow Nigerian, especially a governor of another state " Adelusi added: "The truth is that it was governor Tinubu and some leaders of the AD who stormed Ekiti State with 20 buses loaded with policemen and party thugs on the eve of the last local government polls."` http://www.ekiti.com/ekitinews/apr2004.php#story50 |
