OMAR BANGURA from Sierra Leone has this to tell Nigerians; "I don't think you guys know what you are playing with. You can call each other names and laugh about it now but when you end up inciting hate here as I read through your posts here and a real civil war start in your country you will regret what you are doing now. Your religious and political leaders are trying to divide you between religious lines and you are helping them do that rather than standing up and say we are all nigerians never mind our tribe, region or religion. That's the only stand that will save your blessed nation. The foreign powers pushing the government to take certain decisions will abandon you when you start killing each other and reject you from running to their countries so be careful. Our 11 years war in Sierra Leone was not even based on religious or tribal difference and see what we did to our country. The worst conflicts are those based on tribal and religious differences. See Central Africa, Bosnia. My heart bleeds when I read what you guys are saying because I know what this will lead to. You will be the losers all of you whether Christian, Muslim, ibo, yoruba or hausa. Stand as one and save your nation together because you have only one Nigeria that has the potential to lead Africa." PLEASE HELP SAVE NIGERIA |

There is need to investigate the death of Nambol Audu, a police officer More Nigerians have been committing suicide in the last few years than in previous times, so claimed a recent survey on what is now a serious global problem. With an average of one of such cases in every 40 seconds, suicide is topping the chart as the number one killer in the world. Unfortunately, several of our compatriots are catching up with the trend that is attributable mainly to depression among other causes. However, while suicide is becoming another major problem that we have to deal with, there is something odd and suspicious about the recent death of Nambol Audu, a deputy superintendent of police and chief armourer of the Kaduna Police Command. According to media reports, Audu was arrested recently along with one Zingkur Joseph of Trade Centre Jos and Samuel Adamu of Kuru Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State for allegedly stealing firearms which they attempted to sell to some criminals. The trio allegedly drove into the police armoury at night where they loaded the weapons into a private vehicle. But suspecting foul play, the security men on duty stopped the vehicle from leaving the premises. On interrogation, Audu reportedly could not give satisfactory account of his action and was immediately hauled into custody. The story turned ugly four days later when, while still in detention, Audu was reported to have shot himself in the chest. The State Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu, would later disclose that preliminary investigation revealed that Audu killed himself. While we do not dispute the CP’s claim, pertinent questions remain about why the chief armourer would choose to kill himself and the manner in which he reportedly did it. Even when we concede that there is a sense of burden strong enough for some people to take their own lives, especially considering the circumstances under which Audu was caught, the question that begs for answer is: how did the man who was in protective police custody get a gun? Also worrying is the manner of the self-inflicted death. He reportedly shot himself in the chest twice! The tragic incident has left an obvious room for conjectures as to what really happened because most people who commit suicide through gun shots do so straight to the head and not the chest. The questions being asked, therefore are: was Audu killed because he knew too much? Would the money, if the sales were successful, flow to some powerful people at the top? Or did Audu imagine a future that is bleak, shorn of meaning, as to have taken his own life? Indeed, the suspicion in police circles is that a pistol was smuggled into the cell with which the police officer allegedly shot and killed himself. If that was the case, what was the motive of whoever did the deceased such “favour”? For too long, many criminal activities have been compounded by quiet eliminations of some of the major actors while they are in custody. And given that our country is gradually being turned into a huge burial ground because of crimes - armed robbery, kidnapping and of course the bloody Boko Haram insurgency--deaths like that of Audu often easily slide off the front pages. That is the very reason we demand an inquiry into the death of the chief armourer. The first responsibility to do something urgent lies with the police. If the man deliberately killed himself or was murdered by people who have something to hide, the public deserves to know. We therefore suggest that Audu should not be buried with the preliminary findings as there is need to properly ascertain the cause of his death, which to many Nigerians, appears suspicious, if not convenient |

The Speaker, Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Kombowei Benson, has come under attacks by members of the Assembly over statement credited to the Speaker against President Goodluck Jonathan. The Bayelsa legislators were said to have been unhappy with the Speaker for making what they described as “degrading and inciting” comments against the President in an interview published in a local bnewspaper. The aggrieved lawmakers were said to have held meetings in Yenagoa where they condemned the Speaker’s tirade against Jonathan. Our correspondent learnt that the lawmakers were agitated that Benson’s statements suggested that President Jonathan was plotting to impose candidates on members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state during the party’s primaries. They reportedly dissociated themselves from the comments, saying, “the Speaker is on his own”. It was learnt that the angry lawmakers further expressed displeasure with the Speaker’s verbal tirade against the senator representing the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Mr. Emmanuel Paulker. One of the lawmakers, who attended the meeting, said the Speaker erred “by joining voices with persons who were bent on bringing down Mr. President.” The lawmaker, who did not want his name mentioned because of the sensitivity of the issue, said as a speaker of the House in Jonathan’s state, Benson was expected to galvanise support for the President. The lawmaker said, “We are not happy with the disposition of the speaker and we have resolved in our meetings that he should retract every statement he made against Mr. President. “President Jonathan has full support of all the constituencies in the state, including the constituency of the speaker. Jonathan was once a deputy governor and a governor in this state, so he has large following. “The evidence of this following was recently demonstrated in the state when his wife, Patience, visited Yenagoa.” He said the attack on the President by Benson was unwarranted since Jonathan had not endorsed any candidate in the state. When contacted, the Media Assistant to the Speaker, Mr. Piriye Kiyaramo, said he was not aware of such moves against his boss by the lawmakers. “I am not aware that some lawmakers are rising against my boss. The development is surprising,” he said. The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Iniobiyo Obiene, said the Speaker spoke for himself and not on behalf of the House. He said, “On that very issue, it was not the lawmakers, neither was it the House that made the statement. So, whatever statement that Mr. Speaker had made, he made the statement personally and not on behalf of the House. “Bayelsa State is not made up of only one constituency or one senatorial district. It cuts across the entire state. So, the statement he made was in respect of either his constituency or his senatorial district.” Our correspondent learnt however that the Speaker had been summoned to Abuja over the comment. He was said to have gone with Governor Seriake Dickson to beg the President. In a statement released by Kiyaramo after the Speaker’s return from Abuja, the Speaker was quoted as saying “Jonathan is a statesman and one of the best Presidents Nigeria has ever had.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/bayelsa-speaker-in-trouble-over-anti-jonathan-comment/ |
